Assignment #1
DUE: 5PM, September 11, 2013
Assignments are due on the date indicated by 5:00 pm in the course dropbox. Absolutely no late
assignments will be graded. A mark of zero will be recorded in this case. Include a signed cover page
with your work, or it will not be graded.
To obtain maximum marks your answer should be in a form that another student could understand without
undue eort: a poorly expressed solution is not sucient even if the result is correct. Proofread your
assignment before you submit it. Use complete sentences and show your work.
The problems at the end of the chapters in Brown and Churchill are excellent training. If you want to
master the material, I recommend that you attempt a minimum of 3 questions from each chapter.
1. Express
5+8i
72i
in the form x + ij where x and j are real. Show your work, and make sure know
how to do this computation quickly, without the aid of any computer algebra system.
2. Use the polar coordinate description of a complex number to show that multiplying by i is
equivalent to a 90
o
rotation of the plane in a clock wise direction.
3. For each of the following sets, determine where they lie in the Argand plane, and draw a corre-
sponding diagram:
(a) {z : |z| < 2}
(b) {z : |z 1| = 5}
(c) = {z : z = cos i + i sin i, 0 i }
(d) {:z : z , : {1, 2, 3, 4}}
(e) {z
2
: z }
4. Suppose z = c + |i, and recall z = c |i is its complex conjuage. Prove the following:
(a) z + z = 2c
(b) z = z if and only if z R
(c) (z
1
+ z
2
) = z
1
+ z
2
and (z
1
z
2
) = z
1
z
2
5. Suppose that z C is a solution to a real polynomial equation. This means that x = z is a solution
to c
0
+ c
1
x + + c
:
x
:
= 0 where c
i
R, i = 0:. Prove that it follows that x = z is also a
solution to the same equation.
HINT: You may assume the results of Question 4, but you must prove any other assertion or
generalization that you use. In order to get full marks, your answer must be organized, and be
written using proper English sentences. That is, you are graded partly on your understanding of
the idea of the proof, and partly on your ability to clearly communicate mathematical ideas.
