125th Birth Year Celebrations of Nobel Laureate Sir. C. V. Raman National Workshop on Challenges in Realization of Solar and Biomass Resources (CRSBR 2014) March 7 - 8, 2014

Organized by

CO2 Research and Green Technologies Centre, Energy Division, School of Mechanical& Building Sciences VIT University, Vellore - 632 014, Tamil Nadu, India & Energy and Environment Research Council, Federation of Science Clubs of Tamil Nadu, Chennai.

OBJECTIVE OF THE SEMINAR

An Awareness Program on Nobel Laureate Sir. C. V. Raman 125th Birthday was celebrated at VIT on 7th November 2013 for the benefit of school students, teachers and science club members.

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1984, as Vellore Engineering College, the institute was accorded a deemed university status in recognition of its academic excellence by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India in June, 2001. Growing with period, VIT University has made a mark in the field of higher education by imparting quality education in a cross cultural ambience with extensive application oriented research. The campus has a cosmopolitan atmosphere with students from all corners of the globe. Global standards set at VIT inspire us in pursuing towards excellence in the field of education and research. VIT is the first educational institution of India to get ISO 9002 Certificate by the DNV of The Netherlands. It is again the first Institute in India to get accreditation from IEE (UK). Further it has also been accredited by NBA (AICTE) and NAAC (UGC). VIT has signed MoUs with Institutions within India and from countries like Australia Canada France Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, UK and USA in various disciplines. VIT ranks 8th among the Engineering institutes of the country and 1st among private institutes in number of research publications. The School of Mechanical and building Sciences (SMBS) of VIT offers M.S. (by Research) and Ph.D. programmes apart from their regular B.Tech and M.Tech programmes in various disciplines. CO2 RESEARCH AND GREEN TECHNOLOGIES CENTRE CO2 R & GTC, a unique advanced research laboratory, was instituted by VIT University as an independent research establishment of School of Mechanical and Building Sciences (SMBS) in February, 2010 to carry out research and development activities for Carbon Capturing and Utilization (CCU) to develop sustainable and green energy technologies. Projects oriented towards this aim are being underway in CO2R & GTC and these projects are on energy, water conservation, waste management and heat recovery. Solar panels for power output of 8.25 kW Solar PV Power modules of CO2 R & GTC also give power to meet the energy needs of GTC and some facilities of VIT. A separate biomass power plant is also operated by CO2 Res & GTC. ABOUT FEDERATION OF SCIENCE CLUBS Radio Science Clubs of All India Radio Chennai renamed as Science Clubs join to found Federation of science clubs of Tamil Nadu (FSCT) in 1987 at Kalpakkam Initially, Activities of FSCT were oriented towards school science clubs and village/town science clubs. College Science Clubs are being federated now following workshops on advanced topics like electron microscopy and nuclear energy organized by FSCT with leading organizations like IGCAR, Kalpakkam IITM, Chennai and CECRI, Karaikudi.Popularization of Science Award in 1999 andAnna Award for Awareness of Environmental Education in 2000 received from Government of Tamil Nadu are among the achievements of FSCT. Energy and Environment Research Council (EERC) instituted by FSCT in 2005 focuses on solar energy and renewable energy resources as it plays vital role in rural development.

Average per capita consumption of energy (APCCE) of India as on today is very small 0.695 kWh/day. Mini power plants ensuring power from solar and agro biomass products can increase the APCCE value considerably. Developments in establishing solar thermal power plants have become popular in India. Developments in solar PV technologies are gaining equal importance. Production of import substitute fuels is the need of the hour to increase APCCE value indirectly. Challenges arising from urbanization clearly indicate the importance of biomass for electrification of rural regions. Agro-based Biomass Production (ABP) further acts as integration factor for both fuel and energy.Agro-based Biomass Production (ABP) further acts as integration factor for both fuel and energy. This workshop aims to present the advances and challenges in Solar energy utilisation and Bio-energy technologies. Awareness of technological developments on biofuel among students of engineering, science and technology is essential. Topics for the seminar have been chosen to create awareness among teachers, young engineering and science students and researchers and establish contact with entrepreneurs and industrialists.
