Absorbing Filter Media

By Dave Hill, Business Development Manager, Technical Absorbents

High bulk FilSAF nonwoven filter media are designed to provide excellent particulate and water removal performance.
As a result, they reduce oil mutagenicity and the risk of contaminant damage to parts, and machinery thus extending the
working life of the oil. (Photo: iStockphoto.com/4x-image)

he presence of water in oil and

fuels is an industry wide concern, which gives rise to a wide
range of associated machinery damage
and poor fuel/oil functionality. There
are different methods of water extraction from fuels and oils, including
gravity separation, centrifuge, polymer
absorption, vacuum dehydration, airstripping dehydration and heating. All
have their advantages and disadvantages. However, absorption is by far the
simplest and most cost-effective solution. Here, Super Absorbents Fibre
manufacturer, Technical Absorbents
(TAL), provides an insight into its
technology and how it is employed
within this growing sector.
Water can exist in oil/fuel in three
different forms: dissolved, emulsified
and free. The latter two are potentially hazardous in respect of impact
and must be avoided. Super absorbents have been used for its removal for some time, and can absorb
free and emulsified water from a wide
range of fuels, oils and gases.
UK-based Technical Absorbents
provides extremely high levels of in-

novation and product development

expertise to the filtration media markets with its Super Absorbent Fibre
(SAF TM ) technology. TAL is part
of Bluestar Fibres Company Limited,
a subsidiary company of China National BlueStar (Group) Company
Limited, which is wholly owned by
ChemChina.
The basic functionality of SAF is
its ability to absorb up to 200 times
its own weight in water, and 60 times
its own weight in saline, at an extremely fast absorption rate. Being
fiber-based, SAF can be precisely tailored into a diverse range of filter
media fabric formats that offer the
potential for enhanced design and
performance. Such media are designed to offer high levels of in use
integrity with no shedding, to give no
contamination of the oil/fuel itself.
FilSAF TM (the specific product
brand of SAF for the filtration market) is aimed specifically at this market. It is the key component for a
wide range of enhanced nonwoven
filter media fabrics that are designed
for the removal of water and particu16 August 2012 www.filtnews.com

lates from aviation fuel, automotive

diesel and a wide range of oils. Such
fabrics help reduce problems associated with water contamination in
such situations.
Its versatility gives rise to cost savings over traditional cellulosic-based
absorption media, while offering full
compliance potential to stringent international filtration standards particularly in the aviation fuel and
hydraulic oil markets.
APPLICATIONS
A significant reason for the majority of oil and fuel system failures is
the presence of high water levels in
dissolved, dispersed and free water.
FilSAF-based filter media fabrics can
remove both dispersed and free water
to very low ppm levels at industry
leading rates. This leads to reduced
fuel and oil degradation and provides
the required filter quality for efficient
machine operation.
MONITOR CARTRIDGES
Monitor cartridges are based on
either outside-to-inside, or inside-to-

outside fuel flow, and offer excellent

filtration rate capabilities. FilSAFbased monitor cartridges incorporate
a multi-layer nonwoven composite
with a revolutionary FilSAF-containing nonwoven structure.
This has an MSEP Rating of
(ASTM D3948) >90 and is compliant to IP 1583 specifications. The cartridges have been designed to reduce
particulates to < 0.3mg/litre of solids
in effluent and reduce free and dispersed water to <5 ppm in effluent.
The system flow is halted when the
media is hit with a localized slug of
water and a gel block is formed. Presence of water/solids in the incoming
fuel gives rise to an increase in pressure differential, or a decrease in the
flow rate, as the cartridges reach their
maximum capacity for solids, water
or a combination of both.
FILTER CARTRIDGES, SPIN ON MEDIA

based on pleated particulate layers

composited with multi-layer FilSAFbased fabric, and have been designed
to remove free and emulsified water to
less than 2 ppm. They have high water
absorbing capacity capabilities, and effectively filter silt and other particulates with no media migration or
linting. In addition, the FilSAF com-

ponent offers an antimicrobial function and does not affect oil additives. A
differential pressure increase indicates
when the cartridges need replacing.

water removal performance. As a result, they reduce oil mutagenicity

and the risk of contaminant damage
to parts, and machinery thus extending the working life of the oil.
They are combined with other synthetic filter elements within the main
housing unit and can be used in both
static and portable systems. Suitable
for use with a wide range of oil types,
including waste oils, e.g., cooking
oil, they can remove dispersed and

free water to <150ppm in minutes.

Such filter systems can be by-pass or
full flow based.
Advantages of FilSAF-based filtration media fabrics:
Suitability for the removal of water
from a range of fuel and oils
High and rapid water removal
performance
Optimized filter media design
Optimum control over pressure

loading within filter media

Improved filtration efficiency
Longer filter life
Compliance with international
standards
Delivery of clean, dry fuels
and oils

has been extensively tested to establish its
safety for use status in application areas requiring a high degree of toxicity and regulatory approval. Studies have included
allergenicity, irritation, dermal, genetic, reproductive, and ingestion research.
Technical Absorbents manufactures its
own patented polymer system to produce
SAF an aqueous solution which is extruded into a hot air stream in order to dry
and cure the polymer, resulting in the formation of SAF filaments. These are then
cooled, and precision cut into a range of staple lengths before being dried, cross-linked,
conditioned and baled for despatch.
The manufacturing process is extremely
versatile, allowing for precise tailoring and

control of all required fibre parameters. Inhouse quality control systems ensure fibre
is produced to exacting specifications.
SAF can be converted into numerous fabric and yarn structures using the following
web-forming processes:
Air-laid
Dry-laying carded
Staple fibre manufacture
Wet-laid
SAF can be blended with a full range of
synthetic and natural fibres to meet customers end requirements. Following the
web-forming process, SAF webs can be
bonded to allow for the formation of an exFN
tremely diverse fabric portfolio.

Removing Water from Petroleum

with Super Absorbent Polymers
By Erin L. Johnson, Gelok International
or years, society has
been taught the benefits of water to support life and to sustain
processes. However, for any
number of industries that depend on the consumption
and use of hydrocarbon fluids, water is an ever-present
nemesis. But why is controlling water such an essential
consideration? According to a
Machinery Lubrication news
article by Martin Williamson,
the evil effects of water are
many.

Water can:
Cause contamination of
the oils base stock, encouraging
oxidation, viscosity increase
and foaming
Affect the additive package through
water washing and hydrolysis,
leading to acids and additive
depletion
Encourage rust and corrosion
Cause increased wear as a result of
aeration, changes in viscosity
resulting in film strength failure,
hydrogen blistering and
embrittlement, and vaporous
cavitation
Generate other contaminants in the
oil such as waxes, suspensions,
carbon and oxide insolubles and
even micro-organisms
Mr. Williamson suggests that systemic water contamination control is
available utilizing one or several of the
following five separation techniques
shown in Table 1.
Consequently, a series of innovative

adjacent markets and manufactures have

taken action to create products that mitigate the presence of water in hydrocarbon fluids. Gelok International
Corporation is one such player. Since the
mid 1980s, the company has been a premier manufacturer of thin, low-dusting,
super absorbent laminates and composites suitable for the polymer absorption
technique specified in the table above.
Their custom designs contain super absorbent polymers, which have been impregnated between layers of cellulosic
substrate resulting in an absorbent, roll

benefits of using Gelok laminates include:
Extraordinarily thin profile
Customizable substrate selections
Customizable SAP loading values
Wide absorbency performance
range (100-1500 g/sq ft)
Light weight input resulting in a
compact end product
Provide excellent wicking direct
to core
Consistent finished product profile

Low start-up costs

The photo series above depicts the time lapse response of the Gelok laminate to water exposure. Unexposed Gelok laminate is
an ultra-thin sheet of cellulosic material. However, as soon as it is exposed to an aqueous fluid (or a hydrocarbon fluid containing free or emulsified water), the SAP within the laminate sheet reacts and a gel is formed. Free and emulsified water stay
locked in the gel layer and the hydrocarbon fluid can proceed through the system.
Functionally, the Gelok media is
capable of absorbing both free and
emulsified water as the contaminated
hydrocarbon fluid passes through the
filtration element. This is accom-

plished via the super absorbent polymer component of the Gelok laminate
media.
Superabsorbent
polymers are commonly made from
the polymerization of acrylic acid

blended with sodium hydroxide in

the presence of an initiator to form a
poly-acrylic acid sodium salt (sometimes referred to as sodium polyacrylate). These polymers (resembling

Absorbents | Adsorbents
table salt) can absorb and retain extremely large amounts of a liquid relative to their own mass. Additionally,
a SAPs ability to absorb water is a
factor of the ionic concentration of
the aqueous solution. In deionized
and distilled water, a SAP may absorb
500 times its weight (from 3060
times its own volume), but when put
into a 0.9% saline solution, the absorbency drops to maybe 50 times its
weight. It is SAPs ability to absorb
aqueous solutions through hydrogen
bonding with water molecules that
make them so attractive for water removal applications. This SAP affinity
for water results in the water molecules becoming trapped as they
contact the polymer and the SAP particle expands. The isolated water remains held in the Gelok laminate
media layer and the decontaminated
hydrocarbon fluid proceeds unaffected through the system.

Gelok media is best suited as a

cost-effective means of dealing with
small systems that require polishing
to remove or monitor moisture. It
has the advantage of controlling two
of the three forms of water contamination common to hydrocarbon fluids
while
also
offering
an
opportunity to trap solid forms of
contamination. Hydraulic system
mobile machines or monitoring systems that only seek to identify and
shut down in the presence of increased water are two applications
that often employ this media type.
Selection of an absorbent laminate
product ultimately depends on the
targeted requirements of the intended application. It is important to
bear in mind that super absorbent filters can remove only a limited volume of water before causing the filter
to go into pressure-drop induced bypass. Therefore, media identification

22 August 2012 www.filtnews.com

to match the application is essential

to successful filter design. The following table outlines just a portion of
the considerations that Gelok must
review with all customers when identifying the correct super absorbent
polymer and substrate combinations
for any given application.
Application Considerations:
Intended use setting
Fluid type
Filter type
Fluid flow
Salinity level of the water
Desired response
Polymer Considerations:
Speed of SAP response to water
Total loading of SAP (range
from 10 gsm to 300 gsm)
Absorbency under load (AUL)
which shows how the SAP
responds under pressure

Substrate Considerations:
Thickness of the layers
Strength of the materials
Ability to control downstream
migration
Effect on hydrocarbon fluid
product as the cellulosic layer
can absorb very minimal
amounts of hydrocarbon fluids
Information gathered per these considerations can then be compiled and
assessed by a Gelok technical representative to determine the Gelok offering
or offerings capable of delivering the
desired water removing response.
Gelok can overcome most water removal challenges by optimizing the
media via SAP type, SAP load, and substrate selection. Gelok has found that
performance will vary profoundly depending on the unique combination of
these three factors.
Gelok is able to produce custom
sheet or roll sample goods that can be
used to test a final filter design at very

low cost and minimal volumes. And

once a media type reaches full approval, Gelok International becomes a
full service absorbent media provider
leveraging the following benefits to filtration element manufacturers:

Other testing as required

As new challenges emerge in this
market space, Gelok intends to play a
pivotal role in innovating new and creative water removing solutions. The
company will continue to press their
raw material vendor base and internal
R&D resources for new initiatives
within the super absorbent polymer
and substrate offerings. This will help
Gelok to develop pertinent and effective absorbent media that delivers high
quality and exceptional performance to
the marketplace. Can water be your
friend? Yes, with Gelok technology innovating the way, water can be restored
to its ever prominent and beneficial
place in our lives and not in your hydrocarbon fluid products.

Determination of Cartridge Filter

Performance Via Rigorous Outside
ISO-Challenge Testing
By Dr. Ernest Mayer, E. Mayer Filtration Consulting, LLC
ilter cartridge manufacturers report various ISO test data in
their literature per the ASTM
F795 test procedure. However, many
manufacturers arbitrarily change the
test parameters to suit their individual
needs so comparison data becomes difficult. As a result, the end user has trouble in assessing the performance of
cartridges from different vendors, and
usually relies on costly full-scale testing in their plants. This paper discusses
a rational approach using approved
outside testing labs under controlled
conditions. Tests with four typical cartridges will be highlighted along with
data collected from an in-house challenge test and PMI Capillary Flow
Porometry (CFP) testing.
Capillary Flow Porometry (CFP)
has been demonstrated to be a useful
tool in assessing filter media efficiency
(Refs. 1, 2). In addition, CFP results
have been extensively compared to unambiguous NIST glass bead challenge
testing (Refs. 3-7), and some interesting correlations were developed, (i.e.,
the B.Pt. divided by the SAE 1.65 tortuosity factor is related to about the
98% efficiency for a variety of flat-sheet
media. Refs. 1, 2, and 5, and Figure 1).
Furthermore, additional work by
PMI, the leading CFP instrument manufacturer (Refs. 8, 9) has extended the
earlier flat-sheet work to actual fullscale 10 (or 20) x 2 D. liquid filter cartridges. As a result, a rather
extensive comparison of many vendors
cartridges was published (Ref. 1),
which showed that vendors micron
ratings are highly variable; and that the

Figure I
24 August 2012 www.filtnews.com

user was still left with expensive inplant testing.

In the ensuing years since the 2004
paper in Ref. 1, PMI has significantly
upgraded their High-Flow CFP for cartridges (Refs. 8, 9), and it seemed appropriate to revisit this technology and
determine how it compares to the wellpracticed ISO Test Dust Challenge Testing (per the old ASTM F795-88 &
F316 procedures) utilizing approved
outside labs (IBR Ref. 10 and IFTS
Ref. 11). Additionally, some selected
tests were conducted at Dow with their
more realistic industrial-type testing
(Refs. 12, 13). Further discussion of the
approved European IFTS test procedures can be found in Refs. 14-16.
Before the work is presented, it would
be instructive to summarize the basic
findings of the cartridge tests in Ref. 1
(and subsequent work not shown
here), namely:
Low-cost depth cartridges micron
ratings are overly optimistic and
cartridge-to-cartridge variation
is significant.
Medium-cost depth cartridges

micron ratings are far more realistic;

and the CFP B.Pt./1.65 ratings
compare well with the manufacturers
ratings.
High-cost depth cartridges micron
ratings compare very well at the low
micron values, but diverge
somewhat at the higher > 20m
ratings, but overall the
manufacturers ratings are
quite good.
High-efficiency pleated cartridge
micron ratings also compare very
well, as expected, since more
uniform than the molded or spun
depth ones.
Thus, this paper will attempt to
compare actual ISOCTD Challenge
testing with both CFP and selected
NIST glass bead data in a rigorous and
extensive fashion.
TEST RESULTS
Updated Depth Cartridge Porometry
Comparisons
As discussed above, there were some
discrepancies in the cartridge data (Ref.

www.filtnews.com August 2012 25

1) such that additional testing was

done and Table I details the updated results, and shows:
Low-cost spun cartridges are rated
verly optimistic by most vendors;
and rarely do they report greater
than 90% efficiency.
Medium-cost cartridges are
somewhat better (vendor B), but
their ratings seem to be more
conservative than found here.
Absolute-rated vendor B cartridges
are quite good and reasonably rated.
Generally, high cost cartridges
(vendors A, C, D, & E) are fairly
accurately rated; and if anything are
conservative in their ratings. Only
the very fine 0.5m and very coarse
cartridges seem to deviate.
A high-cost wound cartridge
(vendor F) compares well, but their
nominal ratings are very conservative
and their 1 and 5m ones were
basically the same. This is generally
the case for many of the wound-type
depth cartridges.
A high-cost pleated cartridge

Testing | Filter Performance

(vendor G) added for comparison
has quite realistic ratings.
Thus, these additional cartridge tests
since 2004 basically corroborated the
earlier conclusions except that the repeat tests assured greater accuracy here
since at least three cartridges from the
same lot were tested (and averages only
listed in Table I). In addition, the lowcost cartridges were found to be quite
variable; and in some instances, the
vendors ratings appeared to be reversed, (i.e., a higher micron rated cartridge was found to be tighter and
sometimes the same as a lower micron
one). Hence, as stated above, vendors
micron ratings need to be taken with a
grain-of-salt and the user needs to be
careful in evaluating cartridges from
different vendors. This is why large
users usually do their own unbiased
tests (e.g., Refs. 12, 13).

Table 1

Table 2

ACTUAL F316 BUBBLE POINTS WITH IPA

Since all the depth cartridge evaluations done above were done with a PMI
High-Flow Porometer and their preferred
Galwick wetting fluid, it was decided
to verify these results by evaluating one
vendors medium-to-high cost series via
the standard ASTM F316 Bubble Point
test with IPA as the wetting fluid (and of
course, only the B.Pts. were tested and not
the steady-stream of bubble point, which
is extremely subjective). Table II illustrates the results for the 0.5 to 40m range
of cartridges (single tests only except that
two 3m ones were tested at both 1 and
10 lengths). Basically, Table II demonstrates excellent agreement for the 1m
through 20m cartridges with the 0.5m
collapsing during the test (due to inadequate internal support) and the 40m one
exhibiting a higher rating due to greater
non-uniformity as well as possible wetting
liquid drainage before the test started.
More testing of these 40m and coarser
cartridges will be required along with
multiple > 40m cartridges within a particular vendors offerings.
ACTUAL ISOCTD CHALLENGE TESTING
Table III details an extensive series of

ISOCTD tests with four ~20m cartridges

from three vendors (plus an extra 10m
one from vendor B for comparison).
These four cartridges were selected because they were an offering to two of our
plants (at 1 gpm/10 flux) with high
usage. Both IFTS and IBR were used along
with the vendors tests (if available); and
in one case (vendor B), an actual cartridge
from our test lot was returned for their
evaluation after the low DHC was discovered. Basically, Table III shows:

5-40

Vendor As 20m spun cartridge

rated at 45m by the CFP (B.Pt./1.65)
value compares reasonably well to 40m
values obtained by the vendor, IFTS, and
IBR (except for two spurious results by
IFTS at 40 ppm dust loading). Note also
that the earlier 2005 CFP results showed
much higher 70m (Galwick) and
72m (IPA) values than the 45m in
2010 (e.g., this same discrepancy was
found for vendor B cartridges in 2005 vs.
2010).
Vendor As DHCs agree very well between testers, except that the 4 gpm/10
results are much lower (~85g) than the 1
gpm/10 results (~194g), as expected.
Also, the Dow 69g DHC at 1 gpm/10 flux
is quite low for some unexplained reason.
Even though IFTS and IBR used different dust challenge and particle counter
range protocols, the results for vendor As
particle efficiencies are quite comparable,
especially considering that a different cartridge was used in each test.
Vendor Bs 25m cartridges show
very low 18g DHC by both the vendor
and by IFTS, but very good comparison
to the 22m (B.Pt./1.65) value. The low
18g DHC was originally suspect such that
a new cartridge (from this same test lot)
was returned to B for their testing, and
they also obtained 18g (vs. 35g as reported in their literature). As a result, the
vendor suspected that this lot was mislabeled since their 10m cartridges have a
reported 55g DHC; and their 10m ones
tested here showed an equivalent 10m
rating by both their ISOCTD and by the
10m (B.Pt/1.65) value with new 2010
cartridges. Note again that the 40m
value in 2005 was much higher than
22m value in 2010 for Bs 25m rated
cartridge. As a consequence of these poor
results, vendor Bs cartridge wasnt tested

Table 3

Testing | Filter Performance

by IBR and was eliminated from consideration (i.e., these results indicated the
value of rigorous up-front testing before
expensive plant testing is done).
Vendor Cs first offering (a pleated
version to replace A) shows much higher
~210g DHC at the high 4 gpm/10 flux
than As ~85g; and its 71m (B.Pt./1.65)
value agrees well with IBRs result, which
is much higher than the suspect IFTS albeit their dust loading was much lower
(i.e., 5 vs. 40ppm).
Vendor Cs 1 gpm/10 flux results
are all quite comparable except for IFTSs
40 ppm/20-80m range results. The IBR
20-80m range results are the most reasonable since a good comparison to the
71m (B.Pt./1.65) value for four identical cartridges (i.e., they incidentally only
exhibited a 3m standard deviation,
which suggests that these first offering
cartridges are fairly uniform). The low
148g DHC apparently cannot be explained by cartridge variation unless an
outlier occurred since the high 288g IBR
DHC value compares very well to the
259g Dow result. Also note that the flatsheet (B.Pt./1.65) value, which was corroborated by the NIST Glass Bead
challenge test, (Ref. 7) is much higher
than the 71m cartridge test apparently
due to pleating with drainage layers to
form the final cartridge form.
Vendor Cs second pleated offering
again shows much higher ~220g DHC at
the high 4 gpm/10 flux than As 85g; and
its 69m avg. (B.Pt./1.65) value agrees
well with the IBR results, which are much
higher than the suspect IFTS result albeit
their dust loading was much lower again
(i.e., 5 vs. 40ppm) and their DHC was
much lower at only 161g. However, with
this cartridge offering the 11m standard
deviation was much higher with a 59 to
78m range, (compared to 3 and a 80
to 87m range). Thus, some of the discrepancies observed here can be accounted for by cartridge-to-cartridge
variation.
Vendor Cs 1 gpm/10 results are
more comparable, but one IBR 20-80m
range result is most reasonable since a
good comparison to the 69m average
(B.Pt./1.65) value and even better to the

low 59m low value. Note again that the

flat-sheet 79m (B.Pt./1.65) value (which
was corroborated by the 78m NIST
Glass Bead Challenge test) is higher than
69m final cartridge value except that in
this case, one cartridge exhibited 78m
due to the inherent wide variability of
these vendor Cs second offering. Note
also that one low IBR 152g DHC again results, but its higher 268g value compares
well to the 299g Dow DHC result.
Thus, these extensive ISOCTD challenge tests with four cartridges demonstrated reasonable comparison between
IBR and IFTS considering cartridge variability; good agreement between IBR &
IFTS initial efficiencies with the HighFlow CFP (B.Pt./1.65) values; reasonable
DHC comparisons except for a few low
outliers, which could be due to cartridge
variability (but in some cases due to dust
loading and particle counter range); that
vendor test data isnt very reliable since
different test conditions are generally
used; and that in many cases, cartridges
are mislabeled or adjacent micron rated
ones are essentially equivalent.
SUMMARY
The extensive cartridge evaluations
with eight vendor offerings demonstrated the value of the PMI High-Flow
Capillary Flow Porometer and the
(B.Pt./1.65) correlation parameter; its
value compared to the old ASTM F316
Bubble Point test; the wide variation in
manufacturers stated micron ratings,
which need to be taken with a grain of
salt; the validity of rigorous ISOCTD
challenge testing by IBR and IFTS,
which in general showed good comparisons between the two test labs (except
for DHC, which could be due to cartridge-to-cartridge variability); reasonable initial efficiency comparisons to the
CFP (B.Pt./1.65) values; and that flux,
ISOCTD loading, particle-counter range
all have an effect on the results, and rigorous up-front specification of all the
test parameters is required. Future work
should include CFP B.Pt. testing of
multiple cartridges from a single offering followed by ISOCTD challenge testing of these same cartridges.

GAED Determines Needed Adsorption

Energies in Activated Carbon Applications

good question for every
manufacturer and user of
physical adsorbents is what
sized adsorption spaces are used in
specific real-world applications? This
article covers the answer to this important question for a drinking water
plant using granular activated carbon
(GAC) to polish Lake Ontario water.
All activated carbons are not the same;
one size does not fit all applications.
They have different ranges of adsorption spaces. Smaller nanometer sized
and shaped adsorption spaces hold adsorbate molecules stronger than larger

adsorption spaces. Most purchasers

buy activated carbons (AC) because it
provides physical adsorption of unwanted molecules from water or air
streams passing through various forms
of AC. AC media comes in powder,
granular, pellet, block, fabric, composites and chemical impregnations of
these forms. Gravimetric Adsorption

STRATEGY FOR ANSWERING QUESTIONS

GAED strategy is to use a standardized set of test parameters on field samples
and
known
commercial
benchmark AC samples. GAED measurements along with ASTM and other
needed laboratory methods satisfy the
lab part. Professional knowledge about
different AC products and applications
coupled with lab, results in a useful
flexible problem solving strategy.
CHARACTERISTIC CURVES AND USES
It is important to clean the test sample before the GAED test is performed.
When comparing a group of samples
one should provide dry samples to the
GAED laboratory. Some field samples in
the testing group may have more moisture and volatile matter. The GAED provides these values as a measure of
cleanliness. It is important to know the
cleanliness of purchased AC. Do not
pay for excess water on the carbon.
After samples are thermally cleaned
they are challenged with 1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane (TFE) gas at 240C. This
gas was chosen because it is difficult to
be adsorbed by AC (at 240C only the
highest adsorption energy sites are able
to capture TFE from the mobile gas
stream), its low cost, available worldwide, non-toxic, and friendly to the environment. After the high adsorption
energy pore volume is determined at
240C the temperature program lowers

when it is run thru the standard GAED
test parameters. At the lowest temperature the temperature program is reversed, cold to hot, to obtain the
desorption Characteristic Curve. AC
does not demonstrate any hysterias, i.e.
the adsorption and desorption curves
are the same. Other physical adsorbents
do show hysterias.
From the graphical Characteristic
Curves in Figure 1 polynomial equations
are derived, see Table 5. These equations

allow user to plug in desired minimum

adsorption energy needed to capture a
target molecule, and calculate its corresponding available pore volume for that
sample run material.
Using the Polanyi heterogeneous adsorption model concepts allows the
Characteristic Curves to be transformed
into isotherms, see Figure 4. These three
example isotherms cover a weakly, moderately and very well adsorbed molecule
from water, i.e., Methyl-tertiarybutylether or MTBE, Benzene and Phenol, respectively. An important feature of this
transformation from Characteristic Curve
to isotherm is that users can get
isotherms at any temperature they want.
Determining classical empirical ASTM
isotherms have limitations for the temperature and also cost many orders more
than quickly GAED derived isotherms.
UNUSED AND USED GAC CASE STUDY
Figure 1 contains the AVolume based
Carbon Characteristic Curves-Cumulative. Note that PACS sample identifications are: AA-686 is unused GAC, AA-687
is its used version, AA-688 is a different
unused starting GAC, and AA-689 is its
corresponding used counter-part material.
These curves provide on the Y-axis adsorption space volumes, classically called
pore volumes as a function of Adsorption
Energies on the X-axis in cal/cc. Providing characteristic curves in volume presentation eliminates the problem with the
wide range of adsorbates and AC densities. When presented on an optional mass

32 August 2012 www.filtnews.com

bases, presentations are grams adsorbed

per 100 g carbon on the Y-axis. In a drinking water plant and many other applications volume presentations are better than
mass because the end user has a finite adsorber volume to fill with GAC or other
forms of this media.
The last of five samples presented in
Figure 1, and shown on Table I, is a
benchmark coal based liquid phase
standard GAC. The standard functions
as a quality control and assurance
check to validate the GAED instrument
is completely operational. The GAED
instrument was within its statistical
control limits during sample analysis.
This instrument has been used continuously the last 15 years with no malfunctions. This has created a large
database of GAED runs on a wide variety of sorbents. It literally runs itself.
Interpretation of the raw data and report writing consumes most of the lab
time for GAED analysis.
Figure 1 graphical presentations are
summarized in Table 1 as numerical
tabular values. Table 4 uses these data

values from Table 1 to let us know what

adsorption spaces were filled with adsorbates in these two starting unused
AC drinking water adsorbers. Both
used GAC filters are near their time to
be replaced with fresh unused AC. AC
does not last forever. AC is also expensive and should not be replaced prematurely. When the water going in and out
of the GAC adsorber is the same, GAC
is exhausted, and no longer removing
adsorbates. In a drinking water plants
used AC is still removing particulate
matter and reducing product water turbidity during the automated backwashing cycles. Users can do
suspended solids test on backwash
samples to prove this benefit.

ASTM UNUSED AND USED TESTS

American Society for Testing Materials Committee D or ASTM provides
industry consensus standardized test
methods used in the purchasing process.
These standardized test methods are
hallmarks of the activated carbon industry and need to be run regularly to
control AC manufacturing and field
processes and provide specification data
for purchasing. GAED also needs to be
added as a spec before purchase.
As can be seen in Table 2 that the
dry apparent densities (AD) of the used
GAC samples are higher than its unused starting specimen. These AD observations have two sources: the
unused adsorption spaces are filled

Testing | GAED
Table 3. ASTM Particle Sizing Analysis and Data

with raw water adsorbates and the GAC

particle shapes have been made to be
more efficient in packing. Unused GAC
was free flowing and used GAC was
water logged and agglomerated when
received at the laboratory. GAC dry AD
is water removed by drying at 150C for
three hours. Percent oven moisture is
the difference between received and dry
apparent densities divided by received
AD times 100. This calculation assumes
weight loss is due to water loss only
and GAC particles do not change shape
due to 150C heating. There is an alternate ASTM definitive water test called
Dean-Stark, which provides an absolute

water percent on GAC.

The ASTM iodine numbers in Table
2 reveal that the unused values are significantly higher than the used samples, the ash values after burning off the
carbon are lower in the used GAC compared to starting GAC, and the hardness and abrasion test numbers are
better for the higher density used GAC
samples. These results indicate that the
contact adsorber process units eliminated some of the softer GAC particles
or parts to increase hardness numbers
and removed water leachable minerals,
resulting in lower used ash values and
increased hardness.
34 August 2012 www.filtnews.com

Table 3 contains the screen sizing

calculated results and raw data. Both
used and unused GAC samples were
suitable for gravity water flow AC adsorbers, which is important for water
plants. PACS Laboratories has developed and made available a software
program to make these calculations
from the raw sieving data and it is compliant with the ASTM test method.
CONCLUSION
The two initial unused GAC samples
that were applied to the two GAC contact adsorbers were different. They were
different in all tests performed total
pore volume, pore volume used in the
application, apparent densities, iodine
numbers, BET surface area, particle size
distribution and hardness number. The
next time GAC is purchased material
used as represented by AA-686 is superior over AA-688. The superior material
has the pore sizes and adsorption energies volumes best suited to remove organics from the influent water supply.
The most important benefit of GAED
most of the time is to quickly obtain
isotherms. Isotherms provide the critical needed information to decide if
users have an AC application and what
AC is best for end-users specific applications and when the used carbon
needs to be changed-out with fresh AC.
Since the iodine number is a singlepoint on its isotherm, it cannot provide
the full characterization provided by
GAED. Iodine number is the milligrams
of iodine adsorbed by one gram of AC,
when aqueous iodine is at saturated
concentration. GAED provides full
isotherms ranging over seven orders of
adsorbate concentrations. Since many
AC applications, like drinking water,
have low adsorbate(s) concentrations,
well below saturation, GAED is superior to iodine numbers in giving you
critical useful decisional information.
GAED and Iodine Numbers for carbon selection and change out decisions
are often used. The GAED results in
this case study indicate that the influent water contains mid-sized mole-

cules, because most of the high adsorption energy 25-29 cal/cc sites have not
been filled in the two used carbons, AA687 and AA-689 compared to their respective starting unused carbons
AA-686 and AA-688. The cumulative
unused and used GAC total pore volumes, cc of pore volume per 100 cc carbon, at specific corresponding
adsorption energies is tabulated in
Table 4. As you see, the larger adsorption spaces, which have less relative adsorption energy compared to smaller
adsorption spaces are selectively filled
in this application. Since an adsorption
space needs to be about one and a half
times bigger than the adsorbable molecule this data tells us the adsorbents usable range in pore size distribution.
Also, GAED provides Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller or BET surface area determinations. The used GAC samples
had smaller remaining surface areas;
AA-687 had 515 squared meters per
gram and AA-689 had 545, whereas the
unused AA-686 had 733 squared meters per gram and AA-688 had 630.
These BET values are in reasonable
agreement with the corresponding
ASTM iodine numbers. Iodine and BET
measurements were designed by the
method developers to correlate.
PACS laboratory has available methods to de-sorb the AC-adsorbates to determine their identity and quantitate
each compound on AC. This non-routine method is based on competitive desorption to prepare samples for gas
chromatography-mass
spectrometry
(GC-MS) analysis of the GAC desorbed
material for its organics. GC-MS is the
definitive analytical tool to identify what
organics are in the aqueous- or vaporphase influent captured by AC. Acid extracts of used GAC and unused GAC can

be used to identify the metals on GAC.

FUTURE GAED EXPANSION NEEDED
Many in the activated carbon industry are not yet informed about the advantages of GAED testing. To reach its
full potential use in solving problems,
more need to be informed and apply
GAED to improve their AC applications
and expand the industry into available
needed new opportunities.
PACS Activated Carbon Services
collaboration with Ajax Water Authority has resulted in significant data collection for GAED and ASTM tests.
These results provide the template for future testing programs. PACS values any
occasion to collect additional data at different drinking water plants and other activated carbon users applications.

Quantachrome Instruments Signs Collaborative

Agreement with South American Institutes
uantachrome Instruments of
Boynton Beach, Florida, the
University of San Luis and
CONICET, both in Argentina, have
signed a tri-lateral agreement to formalize
collaboration and cooperation between
all parties to further the development of
porous materials synthesis and characterization both within Argentina and
throughout Latin America.
An agreement for scientific and technical collaboration between Quantachrome Instruments, the National
Institute of Applied Physics (INFAP, University of San Luis, Argentina) and the
National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET, Buenos Aires,
Argentina) was signed by Dr. Marta

Rovira, president of CONICET, Dr. Jos

Luis Riccardo, president and Technical
Representative of the University of San
Luis, and Quantachromes President, Mr.
Scott Lowell.
Dr. Karim Sapag (Technical Representative of INFAP and CONICET) and Dr.
Matthias Thommes (Technical Representative, Quantachrome) were also present
at the signing, which took place at Quantachrome Instruments headquarters earlier this summer as the Sixth
International Workshop Characterization
of Porous Materials From Angstroms to
Millimeters was being held at nearby
Delray Beach, Florida.
The tri-lateral agreements main objective is to regulate the level of assis-

tance and cooperation between the involved parties to benefit the development and continued support of joint
projects in the fields of synthesis and
characterization of porous solids, and
their use in applications such as adsorption, separation and storage of gases,
water and industrial effluent filtration,
catalysis, etc. These are all areas of interest for all the involved groups.
Quantachrome Instruments, INFAP
(the research center depending on both
UNSL and CONICET) and UNSL will
now move forward with a cross-collaboration effort, consisting of research and
assistance efforts plus support for investigation centers and industry in Argentina
and other South American countries,
which would benefit the institutions.
This will have the added advantage of
helping the growth of the INFAPs laboratory facilities and personnel, which will
in turn help bring more opportunities to
strengthen research efforts and relationships with other institutions, academic
and research groups, as well as industry
worldwide by offering technical assistance where needed.
The organizations joint efforts will
also be used to plan and organize workshops, symposiums, and conferences in
the field of characterization of porous
solids and their applications. Also, they
will be able to collaborate with the development of new theoretical models, as
well as software models, to be used along
with the Quantachrome line of instruments in order to expand the activities
carried out in research centers across Argentina as well as their sphere of influence. Quantachrome will provide
technical support, instrument operational training, and data interpretation
support for INFAPs personnel. Once
training has been completed, both Quantachromes experts and INFAP personnel
will provide technical and after-sales
support to instrument users in Argentina
and other Latin American countries.
