accused Barack Obama of compil-
ing “the most liberal voting record in
the United States Senate” on Friday

ANAHUAC — A man standing at
the gate says Friday night’s game is
free of charge because people in this
town already have paid too much.
Even if it’s only for a few hours,
the trip to Kyle White Stadium to
watch Anahuac’s game against
Hardin-Jefferson allowed the peo-
ple in this small community to get
away from the scars Hurricane Ike
has left.
It was two weeks ago today when
some of these people lost their
homes and now some of them are
forced to live with family. In some
cases, there are still people who have
not come home and for the first
hour of the game, it was noticeable.

Guillory arrived early when plen-
ty of good seats were available on
the home side.
There were a few patches of peo-
ple wearing Anahuac’s gold and
black, but the bleachers mainly
remained empty.
It was a rare site for her husband,
Lindy, who has spent his whole life
in Anahuac.
But football is more than just
something Lindy Guillory does to
kill time on a Friday night.

Ike devastates local oyster
industry with some experts
expecting 2-year rebound

BEAUMONT — Just days
before the Southeast Texas oyster
season starts, local experts are
saying it could take the industry
up to two years to rebound from
Hurricane Ike’s crippling effects.
“It don’t look good. The storm
wiped my oyster house out,” said
W.S. Childress, 70, a Smith Point
oysterman. “It’s going to be hard
for me over the next six months.”
Childress, who has spent 30
years in the industry, said while
his oyster processing facility is
being built he can continue to
catch oysters and sell them to
another dealer.
Selling oysters, however, only
accounts for half of his business.
And even that could be a prob-
lem as the price of oysters could
drive some customers out of the
market.

Broussard is concerned, the show

After hearing that the South
Texas State Fair was canceled,
the agriculture teacher at
Hamshire-Fannett High School
phoned his fellow agriculture
teachers and asked if they were
interested in getting a livestock
show together.
“A lot of these kids have been
raising these animals since Feb-
ruary,” Broussard said. “They
have a financial commitment,
and the whole family is commit-
ted. We want to at least give them
a chance to exhibit.”
