BAE Systems will be laying off as many as 259 workers starting in September due to
declining orders from the government. The announcement comes less than a year
after BAE announced it was laying off 230 workers in October. Kelly Golden, national
spokeswoman, said that the job cuts are across the board and are the result of a
reduction in government orders for the M88 recovery vehicle and the M113 armored
personnel carrier.

Cobham Avionics Aurora is laying off 113 workers as its parent company consolidates
operations in Arizona. Artex Aircraft Supply Inc., which does business as Cobham
Avionics Aurora, announced last week that it will close its Portland-area facility
sometime between Jan. 1 and March 31, 2010. Artex is a subsidiary of Cobham Plc.,
a United Kingdom-based aerospace and defense systems company. The facility,
along with one in Bothell, Wash., will merge into another Cobham-owned avionics
facility in Prescott. Combined, the move involves 150 layoffs.

Defense contractor BAE said 314 employees in Minnesota would be laid off due to a
canceled contract for a non-line-of-sight cannon. "These layoffs come as a result of
the partial termination notice and stop-work orders the company received for its
Future Combat Systems manned ground vehicle program contracts," company

Hickey Freeman Co., under new ownership, began laying off more than 100 workers
on Thursday, according to a union official. Employees began receiving letters

United, the union that represents workers at the high-end men's apparel

Daimler Trucks North America plans to phase out its Detroit Diesel parts distribution
center in northeast Ohio over the next 12 months and eliminate 190 jobs. The
company told employees about the move on Monday in Canton. Daimler Trucks, part
of German auto maker Daimler AG, blames the closing on the economic downturn
and calls the decision part of an ongoing repositioning.

Lear Corp., the Michigan-based automotive parts manufacturer, plans to close its El
Paso distribution warehouse and lay off 155 employees. Lear notified the Texas
Workforce Commission last week that it plans to complete the layoffs by October at
the warehouse at Loma Verde Drive on the far East Side. General Motors and Ford
are among Lear's largest customers. Both companies have closed factories and laid
off thousands of workers. Positions being lost include an accountant, senior quality
engineer, human resources administrator, information technology positions,

Industrial firm Tomkins today said it planned to cut a further 1,600 jobs this year as
it slid into the red for the first half of 2009. The fresh cull comes after a slump in
demand for cars and heavy equipment which has already seen 3,900 employees go
across the firm.

Cummins Filtration has announced plans to move 400 jobs at its Lake Mills plant to a
factory in Mexico. The division of diesel engine manufacturer Cummins Inc.
announced Tuesday its oil and fuel filter assembly operations in Lake Mills will be
moved to San Luis Potosi, Mexico, beginning in November. Officials say 400 workers
at the plant in Winnebago County will lose their jobs between November 2009 and
March 2010. Other operations at the Iowa plant, and about 110 people that run
those operations, will remain.

The auto parts maker announced that it is eliminating 145 salaried positions at its
complex in Buena Vista Township. The company said it has reduced its salaried work
force there by 341 positions since Jan. 1. The 145 employees affected this week
were placed on temporary layoff until their positions are reduced, which will occur
Sept. 1. Delphi filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2005. Delphi expects to
exit bankruptcy by Sept. 30.

Auto parts manufacturer Metaldyne will shut its chassis factory in Whitsett, costing
144 jobs. The Michigan-based company, which filed for bankruptcy in May, sold a
number of facilities to MD Investors Corp. this month, but the new owners did not
need the factory at Rock Creek Center and so it will be closed, said Marge Sorge, a
Metaldyne spokesperson. The timeline for the plant's closure will be based on
customer demand as its capacity it shifted to other facilities, she added.

Hexion Specialty Chemicals has expanded its cost-cutting measures, saying it plans
to eliminate about 1,300 jobs at locations around the world as it tries to restore
profitability after another quarter of losses. At the Columbus headquarters, the head
count will remain about 280, said spokesman Peter Loscocco. Some local jobs have
been cut, but local hiring has offset those cuts.

As part of the Army's progress toward closure of the Newport Chemical Depot, this
week depot officials announced the impending layoff of approximately 180
employees. The workers affected by this reduction, which will be effective in
September, are employed by Parsons Corporation, the Army contractor that built,
operated and now is dismantling the facility where more than 1,200 tons of chemical
agent VX was destroyed.

The Rochester Board of Education is laying off more than 100 teachers but spared
dozens of other school jobs that had been targeted for cuts. The board voted 5-1 to
layoff 130 teachers, from elementary school to art, physical education and special
education. Some 40 music teachers, school psychologists and social workers had
their jobs spared by board members who voted against cutting those positions.

The University of Cincinnati will eliminate 120 jobs on its main campus this year as
part of a $23 million budget cut. About half of positions already are vacant but about
63 employees will be laid off, UC officials said this week. There are fewer than a
dozen cuts of faculty positions, with the rest administrative and support jobs, said
Jim Plummer, vice president for finance.

University spokeswoman Janine Sikes said Monday the jobs are being eliminated as

the College of Journalism and Communications is eliminating 17 positions, including
14 at its broadcast stations. Faculty members are receiving a one-year notice and

General Electric Co. plans to cease manufacturing light bulbs at its Oakville, Ont.,
plant. The plant currently employs about 160 people in manufacturing, who produce
incandescent, fluorescent and halogen light bulbs. Their jobs will be phased out
through August 2010, with the manufacturing functions shifting to other GE owned
as well as outsourced factories. A separate warehouse and distribution centre in
Oakville will continue to operate. The company blamed the move on waning demand
for traditional incandescent bulbs, which are losing market share to more energy-
efficient light sources, such as compact-fluorescent fixtures.

Exterran Holdings Inc. will lay off 274 employees, or 3 percent of its work force, from
four of its facilities - two of which the company plans to close. In a letter to the TWC,
the Houston natural gas compression company wrote that its Exterran Energy
Solutions LP unit would close its Schulenburg and Columbus, Texas, manufacturing
facilities and, as a result, lay off 73 employees. In Houston, the company will lay off
79 employees from its Brittmore facility and 122 employees from its North Houston
Rosslyn facility.

American International Group's consumer finance unit announced the elimination of
900 jobs today as it also, not coincidentally, reported its sixth consecutive quarterly
loss. American General Finance widened its loss to $227.2 million from a loss of
$31.8 million last year, while its revenue tanked 32% to $491.4 million. The
company said it is closed 145 branches and cut 900 jobs in the first half of the year,
as it pared down its business in preparation to be sold.

A construction slump in Portland has resulted in a 50 percent cut in the staff of the
city's Bureau of Development Services. The Oregonian reports that the agency plans
to shed about 150 of its 300 employees by Oct. 1, more layoffs and at a faster pace
than expected. The bureau reviews plans, issues permits and inspects construction
on everything from new skyscrapers to new bathrooms in private houses. Its funding
comes from fees paid by developers and homeowners.

The Illinois Department of Corrections is laying off more than 400 employees
because of budget cuts. The layoffs are at the East Moline, Lincoln, Logan, Decatur,

eliminated effective Aug. 28 because of anticipated budget cuts. Of the 10 agencies

rehabilitation hospitals. The layoffs will take place Oct. 1. Eighty-nine of the job
losses are in South Florida. That comprises 29 in Pompano Beach, 20 in Sunrise, 20

by the economic downturn. U of I medical affairs vice president Jean Robillard told

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas announced Wednesday that it will lay off 57
workers at its Richardson headquarters. The staff reductions will take place from Oct.
2 through the end of the year and are part of a plan to adjust staff levels and trim
administrative costs, the company said in a statement. Statewide, 181 positions will
be cut. The move is partly the result of a decision made by the parent company,
Health Care Service Corp., known as HSC, which operates Blue Cross Blue Shield
plans in Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, Jarvis said. HSC will eliminate
650 positions, or about 4% of its work force across the four states, over the next six
months due to moderated growth through 2010, she said.

Kaiser Permanente disclosed plans to eliminate 1,200 jobs in Northern California,
citing uncertainties over the economy, federal health care legislation and shrinking
reimbursements for Medicare. The jobs will be eliminated in the Bay Area, the
Sacramento region, and the Central Valley area south to Fresno, Kaiser spokesman
Jim Caroompas said. All 1,200 of the positions are unionized. Jobs were eliminated at

determines how to repair and restore the hospital following devastating storms and

Chipmaker Analog Devices Inc. of Norwood will shut down its Cambridge
manufacturing facility next month, at a cost of 120 jobs. Spokeswoman Maria
Tagliaferro said the job cuts were the result of a previously announced plan to
consolidate production at Analog's Wilmington plant. Analog Devices is a major
producer of specialized chips that convert sound or vibration into digital data and
that are found in a variety of motion-sensitive devices, such as automobile airbags
and the handheld controller for the popular Nintendo Wii videogame console. The
micro-electrical-mechanical sensors, or MEMS chips, use the motions of tiny silicon
"fingers" to detect sounds or movements. In automobile airbag systems, the chips
detect the shock of a collision and deploy the bag. Analog Devices has also
developed a MEMS chip for use as a microphone in low-cost electronic devices such
as cellphones.

Samsung Austin Semiconductor said Friday that it plans to close its older chip factory
in Austin and invest $500 million to convert it into an expansion of its more
advanced, 2-year-old plant. The company expects to cut 500 jobs - nearly one-third
of its local work force - with the closing of Fab 1 by late October. It expects to fill

announced that it will cut 195 jobs at its three North Dakota sites due to slow sales.
Bobcat laid off about 250 workers earlier this year and idled plants for part of June
and July. Bobcat was started as Melroe Manufacturing more than 60 years ago by
two brothers who ran a machine shop and wanted to help turkey farmers clean their
barns. It is now owned by Doosan Infracore International, a subsidiary of South
Korea-based Doosan Infracore. The company has a network of more than 3,500
dealers worldwide and 20 manufacturing plants in the U.S., Europe and China.

A decision announced Thursday to close one of Cedar Rapids' oldest manufacturing
operations stunned community and union leaders. Terex Cedarapids, which makes

manufacturing at its northeast Cedar Rapids facility in mid-2010. The company's
engineering, sales and service functions, which employ about 50, will remain in

Despite an in-progress, multimillion-dollar service upgrade in the Farmington area,
Comcast plans to close its Farmington call service center, laying off six local
employees to consolidate services to a larger call facility in Denver, the company
confirmed this week. The closure is one of three Comcast service centers to be shut
down state-wide. Facilities in Albuquerque and Las Cruces also will close, requiring
call center jobs to be consolidated. But Comcast says the closure of New Mexico call
centers, laying off 178 employees statewide, is not a result of struggling business.
Rather, the consolidation will better serve New Mexico customers with improved call
center customer service, Comcast regional spokesman Chris Dunkeson said.

advertising and 50 fewer positions in news, reducing the newsroom staff (which

the Brandon Square store. Other closures are in Lee County's Bonita Springs and

ADC Telecommunications Inc. said it will cut more jobs than expected in its latest
restructuring, including 55 jobs in Minnesota. The Eden Prairie-based maker of
telecom industry equipment now plans to cut its workforce by 350 to 400 people
worldwide, an expansion from the 100 to 130 figure previously announced in June.
The new total represents about 4 percent of ADC's total workforce. The earlier job
cuts announcement affected Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Now ADC is
expanding the cuts elsewhere, including 55 jobs in Minnesota.
