THE TRUE DANGERS OF ATHEISM

I. ATHEISM DENIES THAT GOD EXISTS.

A. That is a foolish stand to take.

1. Ps 14:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done
abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

B. God has witnesses.

1. Isa 43:10-12 Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye
may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither
shall there be after me. I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour. I have declared, and
have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my
witnesses, saith the LORD, that I am God.

C. The universe attests the existence of God.

1. Isa 45:8-13
8 Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, and let
them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together; I the LORD have created it.
9 Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the
clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?
10 Woe unto him that saith unto his father, What begettest thou? or to the woman, What hast thou brought forth?
11 Thus saith the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons,
and concerning the work of my hands command ye me.
12 I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all
their host have I commanded.
13 I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways: he shall build my city, and he shall let go
my captives, not for price nor reward, saith the LORD of hosts.

D. If there is no God, then we do not have His revelation.

1. 2 Tim 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof,
for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly
furnished unto all good works.

E. If there is no God, then there is no Christ, His Son.

1. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth
in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

F. If there is no God and no Son, then there is no hope of salvation.

1. Ps 3:8 Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.

2. Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given
among men, whereby we must be saved.

II. ATHEISM DENIES THE ETERNAL SOUL.

A. If there is no eternal soul, then there are no eternal repercussions.

1. Gal 6:7-8 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of
the Spirit reap life everlasting.
 2. John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall
not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

III. ATHEISM DENIES THE EXISTENCE OF HEAVEN AND HELL.

A. Atheists want to believe that there will be no reward in heaven.

1. 1 Peter 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his
abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the
dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for
you,

B. Atheists want to believe that there will be no punishment in hell.

1. Matt 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into
everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

2. Rev 20:14-15 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And
whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

IV. IF GOD DOES NOT EXIST, THEN OUR CODE OF LAW HAS NO BASIS.
A. Thomas Jefferson
1. “No nation has ever yet existed or been governed without religion. Nor can be. The Christian
religion is the best religion that has ever been given to man and I as Chief Magistrate of this nation am
bound to give it the sanction of my example.”
B. Sir William Blackstone
1. “Upon these two foundations, the law of nature and the law of biblical revelation, depend all human
laws; that is to say, no human law should be suffered to contradict these.”

V. ATHEISM POSITS MAN AS AN ANIMAL.

A. If man is just another animal, there is nothing ethically wrong with the strong killing the weak.
1. Adolf Hitler: “I freed Germany from the stupid and degrading fallacies of conscience and morality
… we will train young people before whom the world will tremble. I want young people capable of
violence – imperious, relentless, and cruel.”
2. At what remains of the Auschwitz concentration camp in south Poland there is a room that contains
14,000 pounds of human hair, taken from women after their bodies were removed from the gas
chambers. The hair was used to make sacks for the transportation of commodities. Often the bodies
were skinned to provide gloves and lampshades for the Nazis.
B. If man is just another animal, then the future should be left to a better “super-race.”
1. Adolf Hitler: “If nature does not wish that weaker individuals should mate with the stronger, she
wishes even less that a superior race (like the Germanic race) should inter-mingle with an inferior (like
the Jewish race). Why? Because, in such a case her efforts, throughout hundreds and thousands of
years, to establish an evolutionary higher stage of being, may thus be rendered futile.”
C. If man is an animal, what need is there for marriage, an institution ordained by God?
1. Matt 19:4-5 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the
beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother,
and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

2. Sigmund Freud: “ … marriage [is] … nothing more than a substitute for sexual independence…”
VI. WHAT BROUGHT THE WORLD TO SUCH A SORRY PASS?
A. Charles Darwin
1. 1859: Publication of On the Origin of Species by Natural Selection

B. Karl Marx (co-author with Friedrich Engels of The Communist Manifesto)

1. 1867: Publication of Das Kapital, vol 1
a. Karl Marx asked Darwin for permission to dedicate his Das Kapital to Darwin, an “honor” that
Darwin declined. Marx’s rationale was that he viewed the Darwinian hypothesis as the
scientific foundation to prop up his economic infrastructure, upon which he could construct his
man-made utopian superstructure.
2. Correspondence between Marx and Fredrich Engels shows how elated Marx was concerning the
“Theory of Evolution.”

C. Freidrich Nietzsche
1. German philosopher who despised religion. He developed a false trust in Darwin’s ideas.
a. “I call Christianity the one great curse, the one enormous and innermost perversion, the one great
instinct of revenge, for which no means are too venomous, too underhanded, too
underground, and too petty.” Frau Förster Nietzsche, The Life of Nietzsche, vol II (NY: Sturgis
and Walton Co., 1921),656.
2. Son of a Lutheran preacher and grandson of two other Lutheran preachers.
3. “Nietzsche was the most imaginative and articulate modern spokesman for atheism.”
4. Influenced 19th and 20th century thought.
5. Conjectured that the 20th century would become the bloodiest 100 years in history and that a
“universal madness” would break out.
6. Spent the last 11 years of his life insane. (No God = no hope)
D. Sigmund Freud (“father of modern psychiatry”)
1. Influenced by Darwin, Marx, Engels, and Nietzsche.
E. Carl Jung
1. 1912: The Theory of Psychoanalysis
2. Also influenced by Darwinian thinking and Nietzsche.

F. Joseph Stalin (Marxist leader of the USSR, 1924-1953)

1. Karl Marx’s teaching provided the foundational strength Stalin needed, providing ideological
support for his unbridled hatred of religious people, ultimately leading to Stalin’s mass murders of
millions of people.
2. 4-50 million killed or starved.

G. Adolf Hitler
1. Nietzsche’s dogma so influenced Adolph Hitler that it provided the framework of thought upon
which he based his demagoguery that propelled the slaughter of “weaker races.” Having
accomplished that goal, Hitler then was intent on carving out an appropriate station for
the Aryan “super-race.”
2. 11-16 million killed by Nazi genocides of Jews and other peoples.

H. World War II
1. An estimated (low) total death toll of 40 million, military and civilian.

I. Mao tse Tung, aka Mao Zedong, an avowed atheist.

1. 27-72 million killed in political oppression and “Great Leap Forward” famine, tolerated and
unrelieved by the government.

73-178 million estimated dead, not counting all the other wars, conflicts, political oppressions, ethnic
cleansings, purges, and mass murders of the 20th century – attributable directly or indirectly to the denial
of God.

CONCLUSION

Rom 1:18-25
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold
the truth in unrighteousness;
19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

Isa 45:21-23
21 Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time?
who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a
Saviour; there is none beside me.
22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
23 I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto
me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.

What are we to do?

Recognize evil for what it really is.
Be aware of where our problems originate.
Arm ourselves for war.
Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
