Financial Reviews
by Breanna Fulper
Time to Check the Progress toward your Financial Goals Now that another year is ending, its a good time to take stock of where you are on your journey toward financial security and set financial resolutions for a New Year. Of course, you could find many different measuring sticks to assess your progress, but you can certainly gain considerable information just by asking yourself some basic questions. Here are a few questions to consider: How close am I to each of myfinancial goals? Your comprehensive financial plan should include a reasonably good estimate of how much money you will eventually need for the respective goal. For example, sustaining the retirement lifestyle youve envisioned. At least once a year, you should evaluate how much closer youve gotten to your goals than the year before. Am I making sufficient progress toward my goals? When assessing your progress, try to determine if your portfolio is properly allocated between stocks, stock-based vehicles, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit and other investments. If youre overweighted in a particular asset class, such as cash, you may be impeding your ability to move toward your goals. Am I adhering to my investment strategy? To stick with your investment strategy, you need to invest at regular intervals and meet regularly with your financial professional to review your progress and make adjustments such as rebalancing your portfolio when necessary. Of course, even with regular progress reviews and portfolio rebalancing, it can be challenging, psychologically and emotionally, to stick with a strategy. What aspects of my life have changed in the past year? Your plan should be based entirely on your individual needs and circumstances so if these have changed during the past year, you may also have to adjust the way you invest. Consider any and all changes in your life marriage, new children, divorce, remarriage, new job, new home, etc. and then try to determine what impact these changes might have on your long-term financial strategy and if you need to adjust that strategy in response. About 45% of Americans usually make New Years resolutions, but only 8% of us actually keep our resolutions. When we make financial resolutions, they could significantly help us in pursuit of our important long-term goals if achieved its clearly worthwhile to make every effort to follow through. So, what sorts of financial resolutions might you consider? Here are a few possibilities: Boost your contributions to your retirement plans. Each year, try to put in a little more to your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plans. These tax-advantaged accounts are good options for your retirement savings strategy. Reduce your debts. Its not always easy to reduce your debts, but make it a goal to finish 2014 with a smaller debt load than you had going into the New Year. The lower your monthly debt payments, the more money youll have to invest for retirement, college for your children (or grandchildren) and other important objectives. Build your emergency fund. Work on building an emergency fund containing six to 12 months worth of living expenses, with the money held in a liquid account that offers a high degree of preservation of principal. Without such a fund, you might be forced to dip into your long-term investments to pay for emergencies, such as a new furnace, a major car repair, and so on. Plan for your protection needs. If you dont already have the proper amounts of life and disability insurance in place, put it on your To Do list for 2014. Also, if you havent taken steps to protect yourself from the considerable costs of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay, consult with your financial professional, who can suggest the appropriate protection or investment vehicles. You may never need such care, but thats a chance you may not want to take and the longer you wait, the more expensive your protection options may become. Dont overreact to market volatility. Too many people head to the investment sidelines during market downturns. But if youre not invested, then you miss any potential market gains and the biggest gains are often realized at the early stages of the rally. Focus on the long term. You can probably check your investment balance online, which means you can do it every day, or even several times a day but should you? If youre following a strategy thats appropriate for your needs, goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, youre already doing what you should be doing in the long run. So theres no need to stress yourself over the short-term movements that show up in your investment statements. By asking, and answering, the questions above at the end of each year, you should always have a good sense of where you are in pursuit of your long-term goals and what you need to do to bring the realization of those goals closer to reality. In the New Year, do whatever you can to turn these financial resolutions into realities. Your efforts could pay off well beyond 2014! Consider me your local financial resource; a true farm girl at heart who understands family and business dynamics and the important financial decisions that need to be made. A lengthy and involved New York State Consolidated Funding Application was submitted in early August, and the Courthouse anxiously awaited word on the awards. This specific grant requires a full match, and the Courthouse is pleased to announce that a generous donor has already stepped forward to provide the necessary match. A grant from the same program awarded to the Courthouse in 2006, was used to restore the front porch and construct an ADA approved handicap entrance on the southern side of the building. The current award will be used for ongoing restoration of key architectural features. These critical improvements will restore the Courthouse to its original beauty as it continues to serve Washington County, NYand Bennington County, VT as a vital community center offering enrichment opportunities to people of all ages. EASTON NEIGHBORS TO OBSERVE HIATUS- The Easton Neighbors will not be meeting for the months of January and February 2014. Our next meeting will occur March 3, 2014.

They have awesome hickory products which include two different hickory syrups, hickory salts, hickory elixir, tea, gift baskets, etc. There is no other company in New York that produces these types of products and only a handful in the US. They are a small family owned business and they get all products locally. A truly wonderful company to do business with and I highly recommend trying the syrup. They say its a new flavor and I have to agree with them! States Kristina

Bamboo is good with other cats, dogs, and younger children so would fit into any home nicely. He is litter box trained, likes his scratching post, and is very friendly. If you think that you could give Bamboo a forever home please stop by and visit him. Maggie originally came to Second Chance after being found as a stray. Maggie is a very friendly girl, but does take time to warm up to new people. Maggie would be best in a quieter home, possibly with mellower dogs and older children. If you think you could give Maggie a forever home please stop by and visit her. Kira came to Second Chance because her previous home was a bit too active for her. Kira is overall friendly but does take a bit of time to warm up, and is very shy at first. Given some time Kira likes to be held, but would do best in a quieter home with older children. If you think you could give Kira the perfect home please stop by and visit him.

AWARD GIVEN- Sheriff Jack Mahar is proud to receive the Certificate of Appreciation from New York State Marine Corps Commandant Timothy M. Forbes for outstanding support of the United States Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots. The Rensselaer Public Safety Building was one of the official dropoff locations for Toys for Tots 2013. Chief Bly donated his 2014 raise of $430.00 and the officers union matched that $430.00(total $860.00). Two Powerful Questions You Should Answer: Legacy by Design. "For the youth, do you want to be your dad's 50-year-old hired man? For the parents, do you want your children to work with youor for you?" This might not be the first time you've read these questions, but they cut to the heart of why a lack of planning can be so destructive for the family. Lucas Lentsch, the secretary of agriculture for South Dakota, posed these questions in an article titled "Make Succession Planning a Priority." He goes on to plead, "If succession planning has been on the 'to-do list' for some timemake it a priority. Don't wait any longer." To add a bit of urgency, now is the best time to plan. For most, the harvest is done and planting is in the distant future. Families are together, so visiting about this important topic will be of interest. Thanks to Farm Journal and Pioneer, you have plenty of good information, relevant tools and other resources to engage in the process. If you don't know where to start, begin with a family meeting. If you don't know what to do next, define some common goals. If you don't know who can help, interview professional providers who specialize in succession planning. If you don't know if the plan you completed prior is good enough, This weeks ag report is sponsored ask for a second opinion. Nessle Brothers Meats, Inc If you don't know if a plan is by: necessary, ask your neighbor who 2945 County Route 74 is preparing the next generation, Greenwich, NY 12834 because your family will be competing with his in the future. 518-692-9366
