Insulation Procedure

1.0 Scope 1.1 This procedure covers the installation of insulation on piping, vessels, and equipment operating in hot service or cold service. Tag and nameplate being as per data sheet. ,.2 )tems quantity and si3e of the material shall be as per #.!. and dra"ings. ,., *ll materials supplied shall be ne" and undamaged. ,.( *ll insulation material shall be properly stored and protected from moisture in accordance "ith C!4T5*CT!5S procedure #$!C%+6/-%#5% '4%001 7&aterial, 2andling $elivery *nd Storage #rocedure8 for material9s loading, unloading, storage and distribution. ,.+ Use of materials other than those specified requires !:4'59S approval. ,.1 )nsulation materials containing asbestos or polyurethane shall not be used. (.2 )nsulation supervisor shall receive a copy of the pipe test acceptance to confirm that all the testing such as hydrostatic, <%ray , etc. have been completed and released on all piping and equipment involved (., *ll surfaces to be insulated shall be cleaned and primed, and remained dry before insulation to be applied. (.1 )nsulation support installation shall be finished as required before insulation (./ &a.e sure that )nsulation "ill not cover the face of gauge glasses, equipment name or data plates or tags, nor be applied so as to interfere "ith dynamic parts of instruments or equipment. +.0 #iping )nsulation +.1 )nsulation Construction shall be performed after all the insulation preparation have been finished and released. +.2 0actory fabricated sectional pipe insulation shall be applied in staggered ?oint construction and secured "ith "ire loops or bands on 22+ mm centers. !n multiple layer construction, all ?oints shall be lapped one%half of each section bet"een layers. 'ach layer shall be secured separately. *ll ?oints shall be securely butted and all crac.s, ?oints, etc. shall be filled "ith insulating sealant as appropriate. +., &astic sealer shall be used around pipe supports "here the insulation is punctured by the support. +.( 2eat traced lines shall be insulated to completely cover both line and tracing. +.+ :here insulation is required on the outside of piping, vessels or equipment that e>tends through an e>terior building "all or roof, the insulation shall not stop at the e>terior of the building but shall be e>tended for ,00 mm inside the building. +.1 *ny crac.s or openings that occur in the insulation or "eather%proofing are to be filled in "ith

additional insulation or "eather%proofing to provide a smooth sealed surface +./ *t all flanges, unions, and pipe terminations, the pipe insulation shall be bevelled at a (+@angle to facilitate remove of flange bolts and union collars "ithout damage to the main pipe insulation and metal ?ac.eting. * scre"ed and sealed metal cover shall be installed. +.6 *ll openings in metal ?ac.eting for nipples, pipe supports, etc. are to be neatly cut to provide a tight fit and shall be thoroughly sealed and "eather%proofed to prevent moisture from penetrating under the ?ac.et. !penings shall be fitted "ith a metal collar or suitable flashing embedded in sealant and scre"ed firmly on place. +.A )nsulation shall be covered "ith metal ?ac.eting lapped a minimum of +0 mm on all seams and secured "ith scre"s and bands, locating one band at each lap ?oint and spaced a ma>imum of (+0 mm on centre. Eac.eting shall be installed so as to shed "ater and protect against "ind and blo"ing rain. 1.0 )nsulation on 0ittings, 0langes and Balves 1.1 0ittings shall be insulated "ith standard factory formed insulation and secured "ith "ire loops or bands, minimum t"o per section. *ll ?oints shall be filled "ith insulating sealant as appropriate. )nsulation shall be covered "ith pre%formed metal ?ac.eting. 1.2 )nsulation and ?ac.eting on valves, flanges and unions shall be installed so as to be removable "ithout damage to the main pipe insulation. 1., Unless the piping is heatFelectrical traced, valves, flanges and unions shall not normally be insulated unless specified by !:4'5. *ll other fittings are to be insulated. /.0 )nsulation !n Bessels and 'quipment &a.e sure that all the insulation preparation have been finished and released. /.1 Bessels )nsulation /.1.1 Bessels shells shall be insulated "ith factory fabricated insulation curved or grooved to fit the vessel shell contour. )f additional layers are required, insulation shall be installed "ith staggered ?oints. /.1.2 'ach layer shall be secured "ith bandsG machine stretched, and fastened on ,00 mm centres. /.1., )nsulation shall be clad "ith metal ?ac.eting lapped a minimum /+ mm on all seams. Eac.eting shall be installed so as to shed "ater and protect against "ind and blo"ing rain. /.1.( *ll openings in metal ?ac.eting for man%"ays no33les, nipples, pipe supports, etc. are to be neatly cut to provide a tight fit and shall be thoroughly sealed and "eather%proofed to prevent moisture from penetrating under the ?ac.et. !penings shall be fitted "ith a metal collar or suitable flashing embedded in sealant and firmly scre"ed place. /.1.+ Eac.eting shall be secured "ith metal scre"s on 1+0 mm centres on longitudinal seams and "ith bands, located at lap and spaced on a ma>imum of (+0 mm on centre. /.1.1 Bessel heads shall be insulated in the same manner as the shell. )nsulation shall be covered "ith metal ?ac.eting in a pie shaped or segmented arrangement. /.1./ Corrugated ?ac.eting on vertical vessels shall be installed using the CSD clip method and lapped a minimum of t"o 728 corrugations on vertical seams. /.1.6 * band shall be placed ad?acent to heads of hori3ontal vessels and at the top sheet on vertical vessels to secure flashing bet"een head and shell ?ac.ets. /.1.A :here insulation is required on the outside of piping, vessels or equipment that e>tends through an e>terior building "all or roof, the insulation shall not stop at the e>terior of the building but shall be e>tended for ,00 mm inside the building. /.1.10 )nsulation and ?ac.eting on e>changer flanges and heads shall be installed so as to be removable "ithout damage to the main shell insulation. /.2 'quipment /.2.1 0or equipment of irregular shape, insulation shall be of the same type and thic.ness as specified for vessels. )nsulation and metal ?ac.eting shall be installed so as to be removable. /.2.2 )nsulation cement, "here required shall be applied in layers 20 to 2+ mm thic.. 'very layer shall be reinforced "ith steel mesh. The outer surface of the insulation cement shall be finished "ith a smooth layer of finish cement. 6.0 The $etailed )nsulation System

The detailed insulation system for hot service, cold service and personal protection and detailed material status shall conform to the &5 H &anual that shall be revie"ed and approved by !:4'5. A.0 Iuality 5ecord *nd )nspection 5eport A.1 *ll quality records and report shall be accepted by C!4T5*CT!5. IC engineer and the !:4'5Js representative. A.2 *ll quality inspection records shall be coincident "ith the insulation construction. The recorded information shall be real and reliable. 10.0 5evision 4ote This procedure shall be revised if it is found to be inadequate for purposed "or. upon completion of engineeringFne" construction practice F ne" site information or as requested by !:4'5.
