He abides by the pledges given by the [RRL in his behalf to the public and the Goverament Two The Amateur is Loyal ... He owes his amateur radio to the ‘American Radio Relay League, and he offers it his unswerv- ing loyalty. THREE The Amateur is Progressive . . . He keeps his station abreast of science, It is built well and efficiently. His operating prac- tice is clean and regular. FOUR The Amateur is Friendly . .. Slow and patient sending when requested, friendly advice and counsel to the beginner, kindly assistance and cooperation for the broadcast listener; these are marks of the amateur spirit FIVE The Amateur is Balanced . .. Radio is his hobby. He never allows it to interfere with any of the duties he owes to his home, his job, his school, or his community. SIX The Amateur ig Patriotic ... His knowledge and his station are always ready for the service of his country and his com- ‘munity. Pave M, Spear Understanding Amateur Radio BY GEORGE GnANMER Published by ‘The American Radio Relay League Newington, Connecticut Copyiht 1971 by ‘THE AMERICAN RADIO RELAY LEAGUE, INC ern Copii wc FOREWORD Understanding Amateur Radio originally was written to fill a gap between beginners’ books and publications featuring the latest amateur technology. Quoting from the Foreword to the frst edition: ‘The bepinner in amateur radio faces such an accumulation of {echnology that he isn't to be blamed for feling helpless before it ‘The ARIEL family of publications alms to supply the amateur with Uupto-date technical and operating information, but the quar rows rapidly with the ar, There is therefore a definite need ‘book that selects those subjects which establish the groundwork f ail phases of amateur radio, and which teats them in freer and more leisurely style than is posible in, for example, The Radio Amateurs Handbook... The things that are omitted in this volume are the more-advanced phases: concepts and techniques that itis best to approach only after the fundamentals are well in hand, Here the accent is on helping you to an understanding of the busic ideas on circuits and equipment ate bul. ‘This edition, while maintaining the same objective, reflects the changes that have occurred in the several years that have elapsed since the book first appeared. ‘To use the text to best advantage the really “raw” beginner ~ one starting out with no knowledge of radio or electronics — should first become acquainted with the contents of the latest edition of How to Become a Radio Amateur, also published by the American Radio Relay League. The present volume assumes that the reader has obtained, or is ready {9 obtain, his Novice License and is preparing to 20 ahead with his studies for the General Class ‘Traditionally, the amateur builds at least part of his station, thereby acquiring practical knowledge along with useful equipment. To help him in this, constructional projects are included in several chapters of the book. For the most part these have been selected from the wealth of such material that has appeared in QST, the monthly journal of ARRL. The advantage of using previously published designs lies in the fact that they have been field tested by having been reproduced by other builders; thus hidden “bugs,” if any, have been discovered and eliminated. A list of the original OST articles is given in the Appendix. ‘The final chapter, on operating practices, was contributed by Richard L. Baldwin, WIRU. If you've just received your license and. have a station ready to go, read Chapter 16 first! Then look over Chapter 1. After that you're on your own, Good luck!
