A bar of 25 mm diameter is subjected to a pull of 40 kN. The measured extension on a gauge length of 200 mm is 0.085 mm and the change in diameter is 0.003 mm. Calculated the Poissons ratio and the values of the three moduli. Obtain the relation between shear force, bending moment and rate of loading at a section of a beam. Draw the shearing force and bending moment diagrams for the beam shown in figure. Max Marks: 70

A simply supported beam of span 6 m has a cross section 160 mm x 300 mm. If the permissible stress is 9 MPa, find the maximum concentrated load that can be applied at 2 m from left end. A rolled steel joist of I section has top and bottom flanges 180 mm x 25 mm and web of size 300 mm x 15 mm. It is used as a simply supported beam over a span 5 m to carry an uniformly distributed load of 75 kN/m over its entire span. Draw bending stress across a section at 1 m from the support. A beam of Tsection is formed by nailing together two boards having the dimensions shown in figure. If the total shear force V acting on the cross section is 1800 N and if each nail may carry 800 N in shear, what is the maximum allowable nail spacings?

Determine the maximum deflection and its location in the beam shown in figure. The beam has a cross section 40 mm wide x 100 mm deep. Take E = 2 x 105 N/mm2.

A beam AB simply supported at the ends is 4 m long. It carries a uniformly distributed load of intensity 20 kN/m over a length of 2 m starting at a distance of 3 m from the left end support. Calculate the deflection at the centre. If E = 210 GPa, I = 9600 cm4. In order to determine the principal stresses at a point on a pressure vessel, the following longitudinal strain reading were measured: in the x-direction, x = 500 x 10-6; in the ydirection, y =100 x 10-6 and in the direction 45 with the x-axis, z = -200 x 10-6. Find at the point the magnitude of: The shearing strain. The principal strains and The principal stresses. Given E = 210 GPa and Poissons ratio = 0.3.

Take E = 200 GPa and Poissons ratio = 0.3. A beam of span L m simply supported at the ends, is loaded with uniformly varying load of intensity 0 kN/m at one end to W kN/m at the other end. Draw SFD & BMD indicating principal values. Draw SFD and BMD for the beam shown in figure. Max Marks: 70

A beam simply supported at the ends, carries a concentrated load of 2000 N at 1.5 m from the left support. The cross section of the beam is rectangle 40 mm wide, 120 mm high and the length of the beam is 4 m. Compute the maximum stress due to bending. A cantilever beam of length 2 m carries a point load of 2 kN at the free end. The cross section of the beam is circle of diameter 75 mm. Compute the maximum stress due to bending. Figure shows the crosssection of the beam that is made from malleable iron, ASTM A220, grade 80002. The beam is subjected to a maximum shear force of 25 kN, compute the resulting design factor (factor of safety) for the beam based on ultimate strength of the iron. Properties of malleable iron: Ultimate shear strength, s = 517 MPa.

A beam of uniform rectangular section 200 mm wide and 300 mm deep is simply supported at this supported at its ends. It carries a uniformly distributed load of 9 kN/m run over the entire span of 5 m. If the value of E for the beam material is 1 x 104 N/mm2, find: (i) the slope at the supports and (ii) maximum deflection. A horizontal beam ABC, 6 meters long, is freely supported at A and B, 4 meters apart, the overhang BC being 2 meters .The loading consists of an anti-clockwise couple of 140 kN-m applied at B and of a uniformly distributed load of 30 kN/m over BC. If for the section is 5132x104 mm4 and E = 2 x 105 N/mm2 obtain the position and amount of maximum deflection in the portion AB. The state of strain at a point is defined by x = 20 x 10-3, y = 10 x 10-3, = 20 x 10-3. Determine graphically the normal and shearing strains on a plane inclined at 60 with x strain. Also determine the principal strains and principal planes. A steel shaft is subjected to an end thrust producing stress of 90 MPa and the maximum shearing stress on the surface arising from torsion is 60 MPa. The yield point of the material in simple tension was found to be 300 MPa. Calculate the factor safety of the shaft according to the following theories. (i) Maximum shear stress theory. (ii) Maximum distortion energy theory.

Determine: Youngs modulus, yield point, ultimate stress, percentage elongation, percentage reduction in area & safe stress if factor of safety = 2. Draw SFD and BMD for the beam shown in figure. The inverted T-beam has cross-sectional dimensions as follows: flange width b = 220 mm, thickness of flange 25 mm and web height h1 = 275 mm and web thickness t = 15 mm. Determine the maximum shear stress in the web if V = 68 kN. A beam of 3 m span is loaded as shown in figure. Calculate the deflection at P and Q and slope at A. Take the value of EI = 840 kNm2.

A beam 6 meters span, freely supported at the ends, currieries a load of 8 tones uniformly spread over 1.5 m from the center towards the right hand support. Calculate the position and amount of maximum deflection. I = 15650 x 104 mm4; E = 2 x 105 N/mm2. A horizontal cantilever ACB, 8 meters long, is built-in at A and freely supported at C, It carries a uniformly distributed load of 60 kN/m over the whole length. Find the position of the support so that the reactions at A and C are equal. In the sketch shown in fig. PQ and RS are two planes inclined to one another at 60. On the plane PQ there is a compressive stress of 40N/mm2 and a shearing of 20 N/mm2, while of RS there is a tensile stress of 10 N/mm2 and a shearing stress. Determine the value of this shearing stress, the principal stresses and positions of the principal planes.

A solid circular shaft is subjected to a bending moment of 50 kN-m and a torque of 20 kNm. Design the diameter of the shaft according to: (i) The Maximum principal stress theory. (ii) The Maximum shear stress theory. (iii) The maximum distortion theory. Take = 0.3 stress at elastic limit = 300 N/mm2, factor of safety = 2.5.

Determine the diameter of the remaining length so that its elongation under an axial load of 100 kN does not exceed 1 mm. Take E = 2 105 N/mm2. Draw SFD and BMD for the beam shown in figure. Find the position of point of contraflexure(s). Max Marks: 70

Find the moment of resistance of the rolled steel beam section ISWB 150 about the two axes. The allowable stress in the material is 165 N/mm2.

Show that for a beam of rectangular section, the maximum shear stress is times of average shear stress. A timber beam of rectangular section 100 x 150 mm is simply supported at the ends and carries a point load of 20 kN at the center of the beam. The length of the beam is 6 m. Sketch the shear stress distribution for a cross section subjected to maximum shear force. Also find the maximum shear stress. A beam 6 m long, simply supported at this its ends, is carrying a point load of 50 kN at its center. The moment of inertia of the beam (i.e. ) is given as equal to 78 x 106 mm4. A horizontal beam AB is freely supported at A and B 9 m apart and carriers a uniformly distributed of 20 kN-m run (including its own weight). A clockwise moment of 180 kN-m is applied to the beam at a point C, 4 m from the left hand support A. Calculate the reaction at A and B, and sketch the being moment diagram for the beam, starting principal values. Calculate the slope and deflection of beam at C if EI = 15 x 104 kN-m2 At a certain point in a strained material, the resultant intensity of stress across a plane is 84.84 N/mm2, tensile, inclined at 45 to its normal. The normal components of the intensity of stress across the plane at right angles is 40 N/mm2, tensile. Find the position of principal planes and principal stresses across them. Find also the value of the maximum shear at the point. Determine the diameter of a bolt which is subjected to an axial pull of 12 kN together with a transverse shear force of 6 kN, when the elastic limit in tension is 300 N/mm2, factor safety = 3 and Poissons ratio = 0.3 using; (i) Maximum principal stress theory. (ii) Maximum principle strain theory. (iii) Maximum shear stress theory. (iv) Maximum strain energy theory. (v) Maximum shear strain energy strain theory.
