Type of Work: Indy Product: Word Doc/Embedded Class Time: 1 Period Class/1 HW EOC: Embed/Snip (Lesson 6) Due: 3 Periods
Concept: Below are some of the most recent developments related to reproductive health in our society. Your job will be to provide an analysis of these developments. As we discussed in the beginning of the unit sex ed is a values driven topic. These issues are inherently controversial themselves because although there are facts that may help you understand them; ultimately you see these facts through the prism of your own perception (values, morals, upbringing, etc.)! The sources listed are just a starting point, remember that any information may be biased and it is your job as an educated consumer to carefully analyze information for validity, reliability, and bias. Goal: Provide an analysis of the recent developments in reproductive health demonstrating an understanding of content specific information necessary to understand each issue (ie. What strains are protected against in the HPV vaccine, approved locations for the Safe Haven law). Complete each level (not just 1) working from top/down based on level attempted. ----------------Extra Credit Offered for Each Question-------------------

Topic 1: The HPV Vaccine Debate

Information Necessary to Understand Topic

Potential Sources

Overview of the HPV Vaccine: 3 shots over the course of 6 months to protect against HPV infection.

What it Does Protect Against: 1.Cervical Cancer 2. Genital Warts 3.

What it Doesnt Protect (Think!): 1. STIs 2. Not all Cervical Cancers 3. Diseases that you already contracted, it doesnt protect against them % of Genital Wart Protection: 90% Is there a shot for boys? What is it called?

My Level of Agreement: Highlight or Underline One (I think this is.) Really Really Bad For Good for Society Society Potential Advantages Potential Disadvantages 1. Less cervical cancer 1. STIs + -

How Many Shots:

2. Promotes promiscuity. 3. If youre sexually active you may have other STIs. -

3 Shots over the course of 6 months.

Does this promote promiscuity or should we take advantage of something that could potentially help us?

Yes and its called Gardasil and shots can begin as early as 9. And Cost: $130 per dose. $390 for entire series. at age 11-12 routine shots of 3.

Sorta promotes promiscuity, because they have received the vaccination, and what will stop them from engaging in sex again now with better protection. Others may view this as a lesson and say, okay, Im gonna take it a lot more easier, maybe find someone else or settle down awhile

and have more modest sex. It falls in both categories of yes and no.

Level 5/Extra Credit/Going Beyond: Define Herd Immunity and explain how it applies to the debate. Herd Immunity is providing immunity and protection for people who havent fully developed or received proper vaccination. Its related to this project by trying to control the spread of HPV from engaging in sexual a ctivities and spreading it to their partners. And so having proper vaccination can help prevent the spread of HPV from both males and females alike.

Plan B Website 1 2

Basic Overview: 40-60 dollar cost. Morning or after pill its called and requires a prescriptions. Taken after unprotected sex.

Intended Use (Why people use it): Emergency Contraceptives, used only after unprotected sex.

How close to failed / no contraceptives: (Time Frame?) 120 Hours

My Level of Agreement: Highlight or Underline One (I think this is.) Really Really Bad For Good for Society Society Potential Advantages Potential Disadvantages 1. Protection from pregnancy. 1. Does not terminate existing + pregnancy. 2. Cheap and inexpensive 2. May require prescriptions + -

Do You Need a Prescription?: Yes and no depending on age.

Cost: 40-60$ a shot

3. Alternative solution +

3. -

Mechanism of action-how it works: A contraceptive used to prevent unintended pregnancies. Unlike One-Step pills it requires 72 hours to terminate pregnancy.

Does this promote people not taking accountability for their choices or provide an alternative to someone not wanting to get pregnant? It could promote the user to

have more sex, knowing chances of pregnancy has been greatly reduced. It would be beneficial to a person who may have been raped and didnt want to have the baby. If they had no say, or forced then no it doesnt hold them accountable.

Level 5: How is this similar/different than the abortion pill (RU-486)? Difference RU-486 allows a woman under 7 weeks pregnant to abort pregnancy. Effective and painless
than to surgical alternatives. One-Step does not abort but helps prevent pregnancy from happening after having unprotected sex.

Time Frame: Time frame varies depending on the state or location as it can vary from 3 to 45 days.

Approved Locations? All states in the United States and designation zones vary from hospitals only, to hospitals, fire stations, and police stations.

1. Better care for childs. + 2. Chance at life. + 3. +

1. 2. 3. -

What happens to parental rights? Child is put up for adoption and parental rights What is Illinois Law exactly? Abandoned infants are given into protective custody, un harmed, and then given to adequate guardians for the child. Can hand into Hospitals, Fire Stations, Police Stations unharmed. Private and Legal.

Does this promote people not taking accountability for their choices or provide an alternative to someone not able to provide for a child? Yes and No, it would be for a parent who is unwilling to care for the child who has resources but wants no responsibility. If the person who has the child but cant provide enough for it and adoption is their only chance at a better life, then yes.

Level 5: How do state laws vary on this? Time Frames vary between from person to person from 3 to 60 days. States say that there are specific designated buildings to drop off
the babies, unharmed. California requires up to 3 Days to drop off a new born at any specialized hospitals. In Illinois, you are given up to 30 days to drop your baby off at a fire station, police station, or hospital. And the rule varies for each state.
