Lady Ramblers fall to Pine River

Lady Ramblers returned to action for
the first time in the
new year and saw a
second half surge by
the visiting Bucks
down their hopes of a
victory as Pine River
picked up the non-conference battle with a
51-42 win on January
4.
The two teams took
a little bit to get untracked early on before they took turns
trading baskets en
route to a 13-10 first
quarter lead by the
Bucks.
Boyne then responded with a 10-6
advantage in the second period, including
eight points in the
quarter by Rainy McCune, to hold a 20-19
lead at intermission.
Following the break,
the Lady Ramblers
struggled to put the
ball in the hoop as

Pine River surged to a
34-26 lead before the
two teams played
evenly over the final
eight minutes of regulation.
McCune led the
Ramblers, 2-4 overall,
with 20 points, while
fellow senior Taylor
Baker chipped in with
six.
Pine River got 20
and 12 points respectfully from Kassy Nelson and Michelle
Kelsey.
Boyne captured the
JV contest to remain
unbeaten on the season and improve to 6-0
as Hannah Hoth led
the way with 10
points. The Ramblers
also got six points
apiece from Makayla
Baker and Sarah
Longcore.

Record season continues for the Rayders
Ramblers battle back from a

two game deficit to repeat as
District Champs

CHARLEVOIX And the season
continues.
The Charlevoix baseball team just
keeps on rolling.
With their 27th victory of this magical season, the Rayders kept their
school record season alive and captured their first district title since
1988.
In front of the home crowd and on
their own turf, the Rayders earned a
12-6 victory over rival East Jordan in
the Division III district championship
contest on June 1.
East Jordan got on the board first in
the opening inning as Dustin Hejka
drew a leadoff walk and came around
to score for a 1-0 leadCharlevoix came
roaring back as they put up a four
spot in the bottom half of the inning,
then added two more in the second
and another four in the third to take a
10-1 lead.
I think after all of the excitement
of the first game, our fans were happy
that we kind of took the mystery out
of it against East Jordan, jumping
right out with four runs in the first
and leading 10-1 after three, Rayder
coach Allen Telgenhof said. I was really happy that we were able to get all
of our guys the experience of playing
in a district championship game. The
whole team has really worked hard
and they deserved the win and they
all deserved to play.
Noah Certa led Charlevoix at the
plate with two hits, including a double
and an RBI, Will Telgenhof singled
twice with two RBIs. Austin Putman
tripled, while JJ Bottomley and Shane
Sutherland added one hit apiece.
Sutherland picked up the win on the
mound, tossing six innings, allowing
12 hits and fanned nine. Nate Moon
sent the Red Devils down in order
with a perfect 1-2-3, seventh inning.
For the Red Devils, Zach Shepard
finished with three hits and a pair of
RBIs, Tim Schut doubledand singled
while driving in two runs, Matt Bolser
drove in two with a pair of hits, Oscar
Scheierchipped in with two hits and
an RBI, while Colin Petrie, Tucker Alward and Noah Raymond all singled.
Shepard, Raymond, Bolser, and
Petrie all pitched in the loss.

CHARLEVOIX Its never over until

its over.
And like the saying goes, so went the
Boyne City volleyball team. The Lady
Ramblers found themselves down two sets
to none to a tough Charlevoix Lady Rayder
team, and in a setting much like that of
the 2012 district final, it was a Dj vu
all over again for Boyne City.
But, as they did one year ago, the Ramblers battled back to take the final three
sets of the match and claim their second
consecutive district crown, 21-25, 18-25, 2514, 25-19, 15-6 at Charlevoix High School on
November 7.
With the win, Boyne improved to 47-12
on the season.
It was a very intense match as
Charlevoix came out strong, Boyne City
veteran coach Casie Parker said. We went
down two games similar to last year and
then came back. I was still pretty nervous,
we came out strong in the third game and
started hitting our spots on the serve and
moving better defensively.
The first two games belonged to the
Lady Rayders.
We came out and played our system
and most aspects of the game felt positive
with our play, Rayder coach Audra Randall said. Before the fifth set started I
tried to refocus with the girls that we did
win the first two games and we were even
at 2-2 in sets. With such intensity and energy of the gymnasium itself, which takes
on an element in itself, the girls had a
tough time refocusing and realizing this
was a clean slate and it was (district title)
still within their grasp.
The Ramblers switched up their strategy against the Rayders this time around
after falling to Charlevoix in the Lake
Michigan Conference volleyball tournament, less than two weeks ago.
Coming into the game, I made a big
change in our lineup tonight to try and
shut down Maddy Boss, Coach Parker
noted. I moved my setter (Heather
Nichols) away from Kylie Hicks, who she
has played next to for four years so that I
could put my six foot right side hitter (Ali
Johnson) against Boss for blocking. Ali
did a great blocking tonight. She had eight
blocks on the right side.
In the end, it all seemed to work out for
the Ramblers.
Boyne was led on the night by Hicks
with 21 kills, 21 digs, and 11 blocks, while
Nichols added 18 digs and 36 assists.
Paige Hornbeck chipped in with 25 digs,
Erin Baker added 30 digs and Johnson also
added eight kills.
Nichols was perfect from the serve line.
For the Rayders, Boss finished with 28

kills, eight digs and one block, Jennaca
Holecheck added13 kills, 24 digs, two
blocks and six assists and Olivia Storm
had 18 assists and six digs.
Gloria Greene also had 15 assists, five
digs and was 100 percent serving.
Also for Charlevoix, Kelsey Pischner
and Emily Zabawa each finished with five
kills, while Yogi Hang added 12 digs and
one ace. Zabawa and Kylie Scholten each
had three blocks, while Alexis Tribfelner
had six digs.
I applaud the Boyne City girls and their
play, Randall said. They are a tough

team and proved themselves this evening.
Its always such a battle with these two
teams and I enjoy the anticipation and energy thats created by this match-up, I just
wish we were on the winning side this
evening for my seniors and the team. We
have great talent and a lot of it young, but
I felt we were peaking at the right time to
take this match. I know each girl put forth
their best effort tonight and I am proud as
a coach to have coached them this season

Ramblers capture first ever District softball title

Great pitching, timely
hitting key Boyne victories

CHARLEVOIX Sometimes the wait is
worth it.
For Boyne City, that wait is now over as the
Ramblers captured their first ever district
softball championship as they defeated an upstart Harbor Springs team 4-3 in the final on
June 1.
The Ramblers burst out of the gates on fire
as they took an early 3-0 first inning lead as
Katelyn Banner reached on an error, moved
to third on a couple of wild pitches, and following a walk to Brook Fouchia, catcher Hannah Hoth sent a deep fly ball to left for a
sacrifice fly, scoring Banner.
Fouchia would later come around to score
following a single by Paige Hornbeck and a
fielders choice by Rainy McCune. McCune
would cross the plate two batters later as both
Jordan Weiss and Emma Shumaker singled,
giving Boyne a three run ead.
Harbor cut into the Rambler lead, scoring a
solo run in the fourth, only to see BC get that
back inthe fifth as Hoth singled and moved to
third on a pair of passed balls and scored on
a Hornbeck single.
Harbor then responded with another run in
the sixth and was threatening in the seventh
with runners on second and third, when
Rambler freshman catcher Hoth tossed a bullet to third, picking off a Ram baserunner.
Harbor would score their final run on a
couple of errors before Boyne City freshman
pitcher Emma Shumaker closed the door on
any hope the Rams had of stealing a victory.

to play ball and came away with two
wins, veteran Rambler coach Sandy
Clausen said. We hit well as a team, the
defense was solid and we worked together to finish. Proud to be a Rambler!
For the Ramblers at the plate, Hoth,

Hornbeck, Jordan Weiss each finished
with two hits, while Rainy McCune, Shumaker, Celena Brzezinski and Jessica
Selissen each added one.
Shumaker picked up her second win of
the afternoon in the circle, going the distance, scattering four hits, walking four
and fanning five.

Escape, and F-Series continuing as the countrys best-selling
truck and vehicle for another
straight year. Ford Motor Company 2013 U.S. sales totaled
2,493,918 vehicles. For December, total sales are 218,058 vehicles up 2 percent with retail
up 3 percent.
Ford brand U.S. retail sales
are up 14 percent for the year.
Overall, the Ford brand closes
out 2013 with 2,412,224 vehicles
sold. Ford produced doubledigit annual retail gains across
its lineup cars up 12, utilities
up 13 percent, and trucks are
up 17 percent with higher average transaction prices. Retail
sales gains for the Ford brand
are strongest in the West,
where sales are up 21 percent,
and the Southeast, with sales
up 17 percent for the year.

December was a strong
close to an even better year for
Ford Motor Company, said
John Felice, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and
Service. We saw strong
growth across the entire Ford
lineup and made significant
gains in the import-dominated
coastal markets. Strong demand for our new cars, utilities, hybrids and trucks
provided Ford with the largest
share point gain of any fullline automaker in 2013.
Ford Fusion December performance is up 27 percent with
24,408 sales, setting a record for
the month. Fusion sales of
295,280 vehicles in 2013 represent a 22 percent increase, setting an annual record. Fusion
continues to be a significant
driver to the companys growth
in the U.S. western and southeastern regions, where retail
sales are up 61 percent and 29
percent, respectively in 2013.

Ford Fiesta sales of 71,073 vehicles for the year mark a
record, as well and up 25 percent over 2012.
Ford Escape sales are up 22
percent for the month, with
24,462 vehicles sold. For the
year, Escape sales of 295,993 vehicles represent a 13 percent
gain, setting an annual record.

the trucks string of selling
more than 60,000 units a month
to eight. Sales of 763,402 F-Series vehicles in 2013 represent
