There has been a lot of controversy about the impact of foreign used cars. These cars, also known as deportees in Jamaica, are imported in parts by local used car dealers reassembled and sold at bargain prices on the local market.

Advantages of Buying Foreign Used Cars One advantage is that the cars are cheaper and appear to be in good condition so that the consumer seems to be getting a steal of a deal when compared to the average cost of a new car. In some cases, the vehicles are acquired free of charge. This frees the dealer in Japan from having to pay to scrap the unwanted vehicles. Thus, the profit margin made by the importer is enormous. Also, it is relatively easy to obtain a loan as many banks are lending for the purchase of foreign used cars, something unheard of in the past.

Disadvantages of Foreign Used Cars It has been suggested that buying a foreign used car is a needlessly risky business. For while the car looks good-to-go now, in a year or two when repairs and replacement parts are needed, the owner may find that parts are not available and repairs cannot be carried out. The non existence of replacement parts has been blamed for the increased evidence of stolen cars, as bandits prey on these cars for parts that are unavailable elsewhere. There is also the problem of unscrupulous dealers.

In spite of these problems, informed sources suggest that many of these cars will be flooding the market next year. The time seems right for the government to do something about the industry. The following suggestions were made at a recent meeting of bankers and new car dealers. 1. The government should put legislation in place to regulate the foreign used car industry. 2. There should be an established quota of cars to be imported by each dealer.
