love anything new. New cars, traveling to new places, new magazines (like this brand new Student Ink magazine!) and new years. I especially love New Years because it reminds me of the fresh start Jesus gave us 2,014 years ago. So even today in this New Year, he made it possible for us to start a new life with Him!Here are three ways to make the most of your New Year for God: 1. Take in Gods Word daily. I can be foolish. There are days (few and far between, but they do happen) when I am so busy I dont find time to eat breakfast or lunch. By the afternoon, Im keeled over from hunger. There are also days when Im so busy, I dont take in Gods Word, and I feel spiritually hungry. Sound familiar? Jesus said, Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. This year, grow physically with food, and grow spiritually with Gods Word.

2. Move up on a team. If youve been in HSM or JHM for a few years now, dont just be a student who comes and attends, but get involved in the cafe, with worship, helping in small group by leading discussion, praying for others throughout the week, or even just showing up earlier to hang out with new students. Dont let this New Year end in 365 days without making a move! 3. Be courageous and try a new event! If you havent been to Winterfest, or Highpoint, or Jam Camp, or the Chicago Trip, or to a small group, or a small group night, take the plunge! You wont know the fun youre missing unless you take a risk. Plus, we design all of these events around you knowing and growing in Jesus, so its always worthwhile! Inside the pages of this new magazine are articles, suggestions, stories, thoughts about culture, and information on whats coming up, all for you to connect with God. This New Year, get connected in JHM or HSM, come to an event thats outside your comfort zone, and meet new people who will challenge you to grow in your faith. We hope this first edition of Student Ink helps you move forward in your walk with God! Happy New Year!

wonder if youve ever felt that awesome moment when someone else just gets you. We love when people take the time to find out who we are, what we enjoy, and what frustrates us. In a social media world where people know a lot about you, not many people have a true window into you. Thats why JHM and HSM are built around small groups. JHM and HSM can sometimes feel like large places. Our size group makes it easy to blend into the crowd and make the group just an event, and not a part of your life. But we want you to know how great it is to connect with other students in your same stage of life and be a part of the large group through a small group! I love small groups because it puts us in a position to live out the life Jesus commands. The greatest commandment is to love God. The second is to love our neighbors as ourselves. Committing to be in a small group helps us love God and love others. Small groups are designed to be more than a bible study. Theyre a safe place for you to get biblical answers to whats happening in your life. Theyre a place for you to learn to pray for others, and a place for you to see God answer those prayers. Theyre a place for you to be challenged in your faith so you dont get stuck. Our hope is that by sharing life through small groups, well be known and loved by others, and well be able to be a healthy group of growing and maturing believers in Jesus. So, are you a part of a small group? If not, join one!

FAQ

When and where do groups meet? Small groups meet in 3North, usually right after the message. Sometimes we have whole nights designed for small groups to hang out and just have fun! What do groups look like? Our JHM small groups are grade-gender based. Our HSM small groups are a mix of grades, but gender based small groups. During small group, well have a chance to talk about what the message challenged us to do. We laugh a lot, eat snacks, discuss life, and pray for each other. What about my leader? Harvest Students has incredible, screened, and trained adult volunteers who love Jr. High and High School students. Our leaders are there to encourage, teach, guide, and help strengthen your walk with Christ. Your relationship with your leader may turn out to be the most significant relationship of your Jr. High or High School years! How do I get involved? Show up to JHM or HSM. All of our JHM students are assigned to a small group. HSM small groups are by choice, and to sign up, simply talk to any of our adult volunteers and ask them if there is room in their small group. Chances are theyll invite you to be a part of their group before you even need to ask!

JD POPE | Why did you decide to get involved in JHM? I joined JHM because Ive always been told that Im good with kids and it was time that I take my faith to the next level and started pouring into others. If you could be a light switch in any room (in all of history), where would you be? Id wanna be the light switch at creation when God said, Let there be light :). If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be? This question is the easiest. Obviously tacos.

KELSEE GILLEYLEN | If you could live in another country forever, which country would it be? I would live in Southern Spain because I lived there for 9 months (Sep 2011June 2012) teaching English and I loved it! I miss it so much and I think about it all the time. What is your favorite food? Mac & Cheese If you could be any historical figure, which one would it be? Mother Teresa

AUBREY ZBIKOWSKI | If you could have been any American president, which one would you be? Franklin Pierce, because he signed the Kansas-Nebraska Act. And America never would have experienced Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale and her trip to Oz if Kansas wasnt part of America. Boom. If you were Dan Jacobsen for the day, what would you do? If I were Dan, I would spend a whole day planning on how to make it up to Aubrey and Caroline Smith for pie-ing them in the face on my birthday. It would most likely involve a dinosaur suit, a water bottle, and a remote control car. What is your guilty pleasure song? I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas because even reading the song title gets it stuck in your head. 7

DEAR DR. DAVE*

GIVING FACTUAL ANSWERS TO FICTIONAL QUESTIONS

Dr. Dave likes to think about many things in his library of mahogany shelves and leather books. We asked him to venture into the realm of the American student and provided him with questions that, although exaggerated, reflect situations in which students may find themselves.
Dear Dr. Dave, I cant stand it when someone has more than 10 items in the 10 items or less line. I want to punch them, what should I do? Sincerely, Punctilious Rex Dear Punctilious Rex, Although that 11th item wont make a huge difference, it can get annoying when you are in a rush. Patience is indeed a virtue. Kindly mention you are in a rush and perhaps they will let you pass. Otherwise drop subtle hints with the number 10. For example, Have you seen 10 Things I Hate About You? Do you know the 10 Commandments? or, Do you of-ten get in the wrong line?? That oughta work. Dear Dr. Dave,

My boyfriend is perfect, except whenever he eats meat, he gets down on his hands and knees and loudly starts to moo. Its so embarrassing. How should I deal with this? From, Udderly Ashamed Dear Udderly Ashamed, Embrace it. That is what makes him one-of-a-kind. Most girls would kill to date a guy who shows that much emotion. And something tells me you have a couple of quarks yourself. Dear Dr. Dave, I have been hanging out with a girl and have gone on some dates. I want to tell her how I feel, but dont know how to do it? Love, Casanova Dear Casanova, Although romantic gestures are nice, they might be a little much for where you are at. Hiring a Mariachi band and serenading her window is not your best bet.You dont know spanish and her dad might come at you with a 12-gauge. The important thing to remember is just be you and be clear. Chances are she feels

the same way and if she doesnt, well then she kinda stinks. Dear Dr. Dave, I dont want to be mean, but theres a kid at school who texts me all the time and I just want them to stop. How do I get the message across? Signed, T-9 Dear T-9, Nobody likes the text convos that are started by Hey. As I see it, you have three options. 1. Text back, Hold on and dont text back. 2. Switch out your phone number in their phone to someone elses. 3. Text back, My phone is about to die.

JAM CAMP
JULY 27- AUG 1 | HARVESTCAMPS.COM

One memory I have about JAM Camp is from two years ago. A massive storm arose just in time for our evening chapel. With the power knocked out, the roaring torrents of rain threatened to drown out the message that night on Nicodemus coming to Jesus in the night. But in the midst of the violent, stormy darkness, God was louder. In a small, crowded room, God came to the rescue, and as the message of Jesus closed, 10 students gave their lives to Christ. In the midst of an unrelenting storm, we saw the power of an unrelenting God just one reason to be at JAM Camp 2014.

Chicago Mission Trip

Since 2008, students and leaders from Harvest Naperville have spent a week in Chicagos Edgewater neighborhood serving others and sharing the love of Jesus through missions. We partner with Edgewater Baptist Church in the incredible work they do in reaching their community for Jesus. We give support to their after school program, Safeplace, through which hundreds of children and families have experienced the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ. This years trip is March 30 - April 4, 2014. Applications are due February 9, 2014.

I served on the Chicago Mission Trip last year as a JHM leader, but I actually attended the first trip in 2008 when I was a Senior! Each day we helped with Safeplace, the after school program at the church designed to keep kids off the streets. I tutored the 7th and 8th graders, and I got to know three girls extremely well that week. I heard their life stories and I even had the opportunity to share the Gospel with them. On the last day of our trip, we served an Easter dinner for all the kids and their families. As I was eating dinner with the girls though, the most amazing thing happened - each of them shared what Christ did for them and their decision to follow Him! I got to see the girls witness to their own families the way that I witnessed to them the day before. Honestly, before I went on the trip I questioned how God could possibly do anything through me in just four days. But God used Chicago to teach me not to limit Gods plan or power because He can use even the shortest amount of time for His Glory. I still keep that in mind to this day and Im so thankful God blessed me with such an amazing opportunity.

-Teresa Orlow is currently an HSM small group leader, who loves to laugh and see girls become confident in who and how God made them.

Chicago Mission Trip

FAQS

Who attends the Chicago Mission Trip? Any JHM 8th grader or HSM student is encouraged to apply to go on the trip. What happens on the Chicago Mission Trip? Students get a taste of living in the city. We forego many of the luxuries of suburban life and become like most of the people who live in the city by taking trains, busses, and walking almost everywhere. We will be serving Edgewater Baptist Churchs after school program, helping out at food pantries and homeless shelters, and providing Bfible studies for an after school program at the Salvation Armys Kroc Center on the South Side. This trip is all about practicing what it means to serve and share Jesus with others. How much does it cost? There is a $75 deposit due with your application, and $250 that students will raise by finding sponsors and supporters. Why would I give up my Spring Break for this? Now were asking the right questions! Every year students make the sacrifice of a week of sleeping in, or even taking a family vacation to a tropical resort. And those students who attend with the intention of putting their faith to work see God bless their sacrifice greatly, in a way that far exceeds the temporary luxuries of playing Xbox all day, or sitting on a beach. Because when we put ourselves in a position to do what Jesus asks us to do, we have an encounter with him, and he changes us and the people we meet! This trip is about more than just a week in the city. Its about our lives being different and understanding our world with a godly perspective. Plus, its an absolute blast. WHAT DO YOU MEAN...

faith?
BY: SAM ROMAN

When you say, I have faith in ond idea relates to trust. Therefore, I have faith in Jesus Christ, also means Christ, what are you really I am placing my life in the hands of saying? Jesus to care, protect, shelter, fulfill,

hen you say, I have faith in Jesus Christ, what are you really saying? Is it a blind and baseless claim? Are you simply hoping in something to become true? I sure hope not, because the Bible teaches us that there is more to faith than closing our eyes and wishing something into being. Michael Ramsden, European Director of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries, points out that whenever the authors of the Bible use the term faith, two ideas are contained in the one word. The first idea relates to reality. I have faith in Jesus Christ, means that Jesus Christ really exists. The sec-

satisfy, heal, restore, and provide. If this definition is true, then saying, I have faith in Jesus Christ, carries significant meaning. It means the core motivation of your heart and the way you live your life stems from a belief that God is real, he knows you, and he can be trusted. On the flip side of this argument for faith in God is the claim by atheists that there is no God. Their faith rests on the belief that God doesnt exist. Its still faith, but not faith in God. Recognizing this, we all live our lives based on some sort of faith system - either theistic or atheistic. The question moves

from, Do you have faith? to In what or whom does your faith rest? Paul writes in 2 Timothy 1:12, I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me. Faith is about more than believing facts. Its about knowing the God who created us and gives us breath, finding out as much as we can about his character, and believing that the proof of his love was expressed when Jesus entered the world and gave up his life on the cross. Romans 3:21-26 argues the simple point that its faith in Jesus which causes all who have fallen short to be saved. So, do you have faith in Christ? How do you know?

Sam has been involved in JHM and HSM as a small group leader for the past 2 years. He is passionate about serving and diving into the deep issues with his students.

As Lead Pastor of Harvest Naperville, Ron Zappia has seen God do some incredible things in his life, in students lives, and in the life of the local church. We had the privilege of chatting with the big guy about his years as a student ministries pastor, personal steps of faith, and his prediction on when the Browns will win the Super Bowl (hint: its not in the next decade).

WATER WALKER:
Pastor Ron Zappia on fears, faith, & following Jesus

You were a high school pastor before you planted the church. What did you love about student ministry? The students, for sure. Adults have all these layers and masks they wear to try and hide who they really are and what they struggle with. Our students didnt hide behind all that stuff and were very open and honest about their struggles and fears. I miss hanging out and going on retreats. We used to live in Arlington Heights, and high schoolers would come over constantly and just do life with us.If I was heading to the store they would come with, if I was doing yard work they helped or the late night knock at the door with a new release from Blockbuster. Ok. Come in, go downstairs, just be quiet, the kids are asleep. John 3:22 reminds us that Jesus just hung out with his disciples. Thats the part I miss the most. Just doing life

with them, pulling them out of lunch at school, going to games and plays. They were random but fun teaching moments. Youve taken a few faith risks in your life. What were some obstacles youve had to overcome in stepping out like that? Two fears: fear of failure and fear of man. I remember quitting my job in the marketplace, returning the company car back to Cleveland and finally returning home in Chicago and staring out the front window thinking what did I just do? What if I fail? What will I do next? What will people think? What is my dad going to say? What if nobody comes to this church?
(continued on page 19)

The same thing happened when we bought our current church home as it was a four-story corporate office building and the property needed to be rezoned for us to be able to hold public services in it and the city was against it. What if we cant use it? We already bought it what am I going to say to the people? How are we going to give their money back? What if they hurt me? But each time God met me in the place of uncertainty and gave me the confidence to step out in faith and move forward. That is the Christian life. Whether its going into ministry, sharing your faith, choosing a school, career or spouse, it all takes faith. Faith is the whole of the Christian life. The Bible says without faith, its impossible to please God. Ive learned faith shows itself in the risk. Remember Peter getting out of the boat and walking on water? Since it is you Lord, command me to come out of this boat and walk on water. We forget that he did! Even though it was only for a moment.Eleven guys hugged the boat that day, but only one walked

on water! I would rather be a water walker than boat hugger. When you think of the church, where do students fit in? Im so thankful for so many high school and junior high students who attend our weekend services regularly even without parents. The church is not a building but people. And our students are the next generation of the church. Many times students are more trusting and teachable than adults.I have seen God use them to initiate change in their families and be used to soften the hearts of parents to receive the gospel. So students are indispensable. In our local church I want them to not just fit in but be the church to their family and friends. Whats one thing you know now that you wish you knew in high school? The Bible is Gods truth and its worth building your life on.I didnt know it. I didnt live it. I didnt get it. Growing up, I was always longing for something on which

to stand.I wanted to do the right thing but often failed because I wasnt living for anything other than my passions or sports. I saw others who were grounded in something, which now I know was truth, but I didnt know it then and floundered as a leader and friend to my classmates and teammates. Whats on your bucket list? Trip to Italy with my family. Trip to the Super Bowl to watch my hometown team, the Cleveland Browns, win the big one.I dont think Ill live long enough for the second one If you had to write a book about your life, what would it be called? Forgiven Finish this sentence: I want our student ministries to be known for... their passion for Jesus and commitment to His work.

arvest Students first ever Summit happened this past October and was a whole new way to do a Fall Retreat. The idea came in the summer when we were kicking around the fall schedule. We realized we had summer camp, and winter camp, and a spring break mission trip, but nothing in the fall! Why would we miss such a key time of year to put our faith into motion? So we started dreaming up Summit. A few things made Summit different than any other retreat. First, JHM and HSM combined to make a massive weekend. We also didnt get into a bus, but instead hosted all the chapel sessions in 3North, had small group sleepovers, cooked our own breakfast, catered in a massive amount of Chick-fil-A, and left the church to serve non-Christian organizations in Naperville and Lisle. It was important for us to focus the Summit around the idea of how Jesus calls us to live and interact in community. We held chapel in the same room we meet weekly as a student community, and were challenged by Jesus call to be light of the world and salt of the earth. Families opened their homes to small groups for the night, and small groups rallied together to serve many organizations in our local community during the day. Add it all up, and its a great start to seeing Jesus change our church, our groups, our homes, and our neighborhoods.

The Summit in October was an awesome opportunity to serve in my community and worship with my friends. It was really cool to see God work through HSM and JHM to help other people right in our neighborhoods. I loved the worship and teaching times, and it was really encouraging to hear Gods Truth about serving others, and then having the opportunity to go do it right away! Plus, serving was a lot of fun. My small group was able to help provide parking assistance at Naper Settlements Oktoberfest, which was a big community event. We may not have had the impact on peoples lives by preaching the gospel out loud, but it was obvious that we were a good testimony to Christ, and I think some people were impressed that we were from a church and were helping out in the community. It was also a great time to grow together with the other girls in my small group, since we were together a lot. Im very thankful for the weekend I spent at Summit! - Naomi Noyes, Sophomore at Wheaton North

6 WAYS TO HELP PAY FOR CAMP:

Dont be a leach when it comes to paying for camp. A trip here and a trip there really adds up quickly. Heres a few tips on how to help your parents pay for any of the camps you enjoy. #1 - Work for yourself! Ever heard the expression time is money? You can start a simple business doing some easy tasks that just require time, like shoveling driveways, mowing lawns, wrapping Christmas presents, tutoring younger students, or the all-time classic: babysitting. People pay good money if youre a responsible teenager and will ask you to work for them again if you do the job right. Pro Tip: Letting them know youre raising money for church camp almost always earns you a few extra dollars! #2 - Work for your parents. Negotiate fees with your parents for extra chores around the house. These arent chores youre already expected to do, but those above and beyond - things they might hire a professional to do, like cleaning the toilets or deep cleaning the whole house. Find out what a professional costs and charge them half price. Pro Tip: Earn even more if your services include cleaning the inside of their car! #3 - Serve the elderly. Helping elderly people around the wintertime isnt just a good way to be a respectful young person, but also to be of service to someone with a real need! Help them with their computer, lift heavy boxes, take down their Christmas lights in the cold, change the oil in their car, or even pick up groceries for them weekly. The possibilities are endless! #4 - Work an hourly job. You have more time than you think, and you can earn a lot of money in your free time. Working at Dairy Queen or a golf course isnt just fun, its a good way to build friendships with other people. Oh yeah, and they pay you per hour. #5 - Sell your old items on eBay or Craigslist. Chances are you have a lot of junk lying around. Sentimental value is ok to have with some things. But most things are just taking up precious space in your home. Old computers, gaming systems, iPods, rollerblades, sporting gear youve outgrown, even musical instruments you dont play anymore all can add up quickly and pay for multiple camps. Pro Tip: Work in pairs when dealinag with strangers on Craigslist. Its just safer that way. #6 - Save everything you earn. Avoid the temptation to spend all your hardearned money on fast food or in the iTunes store. If you really want, Harvest Students will bank your money for you and apply it to camp. You can start saving in January and each week bring in $15-20, and well apply it to the next trip coming up on your behalf. So get moving, and youll be packing your bags the night before camp and breathing easy because youve earned this one.

THE WORTH-SHIP

BY: CALUM SHAW

regardless of how the ship looks, the cargo and destination should be the same: Gods worth being sent to God. If worship is the ship in which we send Gods worth to God, the experience might be considered the wake, the waves that move out from behind the ship. We experience the movement of Gods glory stirring the waters of our heart. But sometimes me-centered worship tends to concentrate on the wake and we complain about the ship,. To put it simply, we might attend church expecting clean videos, smooth transitions, a cool lighting environment and great music. Add it all up and its not that much different than a Radiohead concert. Sometimes we forget that what we are giving is more than just outward artistry; our praise is going to the throne room of God!

soft mist of rain was descending over the crowd of 40,000. My overpriced, plastic blue poncho was clinging to me in the late summer humidity. We Scots may moan, but rain will never dampen a Scottish crowd, and today was no exception. Radiohead had just finished their third encore, and a friend and I were slowly marching out through the grass, now a slippery mud. We discussed the amazing light show, and he made his best effort to convince me that we should have moved closer to the stage, but I was adamant that I would get the best sound by the audio engineer.

...this sounded a lot like what church is like, just without the beer. I would hope.
During our conversation he said, Aw it was amazin. I was standing there, a couple of beers in me, hands in the air, listening to the music, and I was like ahhhh! I chuckled in agreement to make him feel good but a thought came to my mind: this sounded a lot like church, just without the beer. I would hope.

Worship has been described a lot of ways, from singing songs together to living out a life that reflects Heres the challenge. Is worship for you like going God. A cute way of seeing it might be the Worth- to a concert to raise your hands, become mildly inShip, the vessel that transports Gods worth. toxicated and breathe in the experience? Or, are you ready to take responsibility to first make worship The shiplooks different in each culture. Im glad we about God, who He is and what He is worth? Eyes in America have moved on from the lyre and tam- off self. Eyes on God. MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT KIRSTIE SHERMAN

WITH
Student Ink: What is your role with Feed My Starving Children? How did you get involved there? Kirstie Sherman: My role at FMSC is an Event Planner. I am responsible for planning all the logistical aspects of our MobilePacks in the northeast United States. A MobilePack is when we take our food packing on the road-I work with hosts from churches, schools, businesses, and individuals who want to host packs in their communities and help them make sure everything is all set for thve day of their event. I found the job at FMSC online. Before that I had volunteered once in Schaumburg so I was somewhat familiar with the organizations-but I really pursued it because I wanted to work in Event Planning in an organization working in the area of poverty, hunger, or education, so it was a great fit. SI: How many volunteers do you usually get during a typical MobilePack? Why is it important to have volunteers during these events? KS: Our MobilePacks range in size from 100,000 meals to 2.2 million meals so we need anywhere from 500 volunteers to 10,000 volunteers. We generally ask for 500 for every 100,000 meals that are being packed. Without our volunteers we would not be able to do what we do-100% of our food is packed by them so they are really essential to who we are as an organization. SI: Because volunteers are a vital part of the running of your organization, do you ever try to get your friends to volunteer with FMSC? Do you ever personally volunteer, or do you stick with working events? KS: Yes! Volunteering at FMSC is a totally different experience than actually working an event so its really fun. My friends and I have been trying to go every month or two. Ive also volunteered with other groups like Harvest Young Adults, St. Frances lacrosse, and every so often we do staff packs, which are a blast and very high speed packing. SI: Sounds fun! Do you volunteer anywhere outside of FMSC? KS: At this time, the only other place I volunteer on a consistent basis is at HSM. SI: OOH! Tell us about that! Why do you like to volunteer there? KS: Well there are SO many things I like about volunteering in HSM!I get to hang out with high school students which is just ridiculously fun! On a serious note I love to see how the Lord works in the lives of students in HSM and am so blessed to even be a little part of that.

RESTAURANT REVIEWS WITH DAVE

GINGER & GARLIC

1633 N Naper Blvd, Naperville

$$$$$
Typical, but no fortune cookie
Ginger & Garlic doesnt provide a fortune cookie at the end of your meal like most americanized Chinese cuisine restaurants typically do (RIGHT!). I suspect, perhaps, that they want to present themselves as not typical Chinese food. Although you may not find fortune cookies here there is definitely enough typical to go around. Much of the same brings no excitement as you read the menu filled with a slew of what is a glorified Panda Express. However, like most Chinese food, when it comes to the basics, its still tasty. The lunch items are reasonably priced, providing a soup and either an egg roll or crab rangoon on the side. If you are a thrill-seeker, this is probably not your place. However, some of us like typical.

SCHMALTZS DELICATESSEN
1512 N Naper Blvd, Naperville

A sandwich with big taste and big personality
Often restaurants with personality do well in my book. Schmaltzs is no exception. This Jewish deli transports you to the heart of Brooklyn. However, its the sandwiches that really keep you coming back. Offering what seems like an endless, unique, and appealing combination of sandwiches, Schmaltzs may be top slice as far as delis go. I experimented with the SOHO Hero, a heap of delicious turkey pastrami that is as tasty as turkey can get. This is definitely a stop for all sandwich eaters and, although it is kosher, this is definitely a place to pig out.

Homeschooled Plans after graduation: Attend Geneva College in PA and work towards an undergraduate degree in Civil engineering. Favorite memory from HSM: Competing in the annual turkey bowl. Wheaton Warrenville South High School / homeschooled Plans after graduation: I plan on attending a small Christian college. I want to play soccer, and as of now, I want to double major in childrens ministry and social work and minor in Spanish. Favorite memory from HSM: The Chicago mission trip 2 years ago. That was the first time I went, and I had a blast. I grew tremendously in my faith and in my character by being pushed out of my comfort zone. The most important thing I gained on that trip was my friends. I am still close to the people I met and became friends with on that trip. Some of those people even became my best friends. Spending a week together serving your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ really helps grow friendships that you know will last.
