The beginning of the good news about J esus the Mes
sia h, a the Son of God,b 2as it is written in Isaiah the
prophet:

I will send my messenger ahead of you,

who will prepare your wayc
3 a voice of one calling in the wilderness,
Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.d
4
A nd so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness,
preaching a bapt ism of repentance for the forg iveness of
sins. 5The whole Judea n countryside and all the people of
Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing t heir sins, they were
baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6John wore clothing
made of camels hair, with a leather belt a round his w
aist,
and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7And this was his mes
sage: After me c omes the one more powerf ul than I, the
straps of whose sandals I am not wort hy to s toop down and
unt ie. 8I bapt ize you withe water, but he will bapt ize you
withe the Holy Spirit.

The Baptism and Testing ofJesus

9At that time Jesus came from Naza reth in Gali lee and
was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10Just as Jesus was com
ing up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and
the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11A nd a voice
came from heaven: You are my Son, whom I love; with
you I am well pleased.
12At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness,
13a nd he was in the wilderness fort y days, being temptedf
by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attend
ed him.

Jesus Announces the Good News

14A fter John was put in prison, Jesus went into Gali lee,
proclaiming the good news of God. 15The time has come,
he said. The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and
believe the good news!

Jesus Calls His First Disciples

16As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Gali lee, he saw Simon

and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they
were fishermen. 17Come, follow me, Jesus said, and I will
send you out to fish for people. 18At once they left their nets
and followed him.
19W hen he had gone a litt le fart her, he saw James son
of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing t heir
nets. 20Without delay he called them, and they left t heir

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

Mark 1

You may remember

from the Old
Testament that God
told Samuel to anoint
Saulto pour oil on
his headto make
Saul king (1Samuel
10:1). And later Samuel
anointed David as king
(1Samuel 16:1,13). And
remember when Elijah
threw his cloak around
Elisha (1Kings 19:16,
19)? That was the
beginning of Elishas
work as a prophet.
The anointing oil and
the cloak showed that
these people were
chosen by God to do
special work.
Jesus baptism by
John the Baptist was
something like that. It
marked the beginning
of Jesus special work of
showing Israel that he
was the Messiah God
had promised them
the peoples savior.
When the Spirit
came down like a dove,
this was God giving
Jesus this special work.

Five hundred years

earlier, Jerusalem
and the temple were
destroyed by the
Babylonian army (see
2Kings 25). Although
they wanted to
continue worshiping
God, the Israelites were
forbidden to return
home and there was no
temple to worship at.
So, they began meeting
together in groups to
read the Scriptures
(the Old Testament)
and pray. The building
where they met was
called a synagogue.
The synagogue quickly
became the center of
Jewish life.
By Jesus time,
Jews were living in
every major city in
the Roman Empire.
Although the temple
in Jerusalem had been
rebuilt, the people still
wanted to continue
worshiping God in
their local synagogues.
After Jesus returned to
heaven, the synagogue
became the place
where Christians met,
too. This explains why
the Jewish synagogue
and the churches we
attend today are so
similar.
Mark 1:21

Jesus Drives Out an ImpureSpirit

21T hey went to Capernau m, and when the Sabbath came,

J esus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22The
people were a mazed at his teaching, because he taught them
as one who had aut horit y, not as the teachers of the law.
23Just then a man in t heir synagogue who was possessed by
an impure spirit cried out, 24What do you want with us,
Jesus of Naza reth? Have you come to destroy us? I know
who you aret he Holy One of God!
25Be quiet! said Jesus sternly. Come out of him! 26T he
impure spirit s hook the man violently and came out of him
with a shriek.
27The people were all so amazed that they asked each other,
What is this? A new teachingand with authority! He even
gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him. 28News
about him spread quickly over the w
hole region of Galilee.

Jesus Heals Many

29A s soon as they left the syna gogue, they went with
J ames and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30Si
mons mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they im
mediately told Jesus about her. 31So he went to her, took her
hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began
to wait on them.
32T hat evening after sunset the people brought to J esus
all the sick and demon-possessed. 33The w
hole town gath
ered at the door, 34and Jesus h
ealed many who had various
diseases. He also d
rove out many demons, but he would not
let the demons s peak because they knew who he was.

Jesus Prays in a Solitary Place

35Very early in the morni ng, while it was still dark, Jesus

got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where
he prayed. 36Simon and his companions went to look for
him, 37and when they found him, they exclaimed: Every
one is looking for you!
38Jesus replied, Let us go somewhere elseto the near
by villagesso I can preach t here also. That is why I have
come. 39So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in
t heir synagogues and driving out demons.

Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy

40A man with leprosya came to him and b

egged him on
his k nees, If you are willing, you can make me clean.
41Jesus was ind ig nant. b He reached out his hand and
touched the man. I am willing, he said. Be c lean! 42Im
mediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.
43Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning:
a40

The Greek word traditionally translated leprosy was used for

various diseases affecting the skin. b41 Many manuscripts Jesus
was filled with compassion

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man

A few days later, when J esus a gain entered Capernaum,

the people heard that he had come home. 2They gath
ered in such l arge numbers that t here was no room left, not
even outside the door, and he preached the word to them.
3Some men came, bringing to him a para lyzed man, carried
by four of them. 4Since they c ould not get him to J esus be
cause of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above
Jesus by digg ing t hrough it and then lowered the mat the
man was lying on. 5W hen J esus saw t heir faith, he said to
the para lyzed man, Son, your sins are forgiven.
6Now some teachers of the law were sitt ing t here, think
ing to themselves, 7Why does this fellow talk like that? Hes
blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?
8Immed iately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what
they were thinking in t heir hearts, and he said to them,
Why are you thinking t hese t hings? 9W hich is easier: to
say to this para lyzed man, Your sins are forgiven, or to say,
Get up, take your mat and walk? 10But I want you to know
that the Son of Man has aut horit y on e arth to forgive sins.
So he said to the man, 11I tell you, get up, take your mat and
go home. 12He got up, took his mat and w
alked out in full
view of them all. This a mazed everyone and they praised
God, saying, We have never seen anyt hing like this!

Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners

13Once a
gain Jesus went out beside the lake. A large
c rowd came to him, and he began to teach them. 14As he
walked a long, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax
collectors b
ooth. Follow me, J esus told him, and Levi got
up and followed him.
15W hile Jesus was having dinner at Lev is house, many
tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his
disciples, for t here were many who followed him. 16W hen
the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating
with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples:
Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?
17O n hear
i ng this, Jesus said to them, It is not the
healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to
call the righteous, but sinners.

Jesus Questioned About Fasting

18Now

Johns disciples and the Pharisees were fasting.

Some people came and a sked J esus, How is it that Johns
disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but
yours are not?

44See that you dont tell this to anyone. But go, show your
self to the priest and offer the sacrif ices that Moses com
manded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them. 45In
stead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the
news. As a result, Jesus c ould no longer enter a town openly
but s tayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came
to him from everywhere.

Mark 2

Jesus taught at the

local synagogue, cast
out an evil spirit, and
healed many of the sick
and demon-possessed
people in the town of
Capernaumall in one
day. And this was on
the Sabbath, the day of
rest! If you had done all
this, would you sleep
in the next morning?
Not Jesus. He was up
and ready for his first
and most important
appointment of the
day. While everyone
else was still snoring,
Jesus spent time with
his Father.
Jesus prayed first
thing, before his mind
and his body were
tired from the days
work. He showed us
the importance of
giving our best and
our full attention to
God. And Jesus often
prayed alone in a quiet
place. He didnt want
anything to take his
attention away from
God. Do you think that
if even Jesus, the Son of
God, thought praying
was so important,
perhaps it should be
important to us, too?

If I Were There...
Jesus is preaching, and everyone
wants to get a glimpse of this
mysterious man with incredible
powers. If I were there, Id be on
my tiptoes. Id want to make sure
I get to see Jesus. I want to ask for
his autograph, but its really hard
to even see him because its so
crowded.
If I were there, Id be surprised
to see the ceiling opening. How
annoying! These people on the roof
were keeping Jesus from preaching.
Cant they wait their turn? But Id
notice the man lying on the mat, and
its obvious he is paralyzed. Id wait
to see what Jesus does next as the
man is lowered down to him.
If I were there, Id feel the shock
go through the crowd when Jesus
said, Your sins are forgiven! Id look
over at some teachers of the law
who were there. Id see the looks on
their faces, even though I couldnt
hear what they said. Id think, Uh,
oh! But then Id see the pure joy on
the healed mans face. Id watch him
jump and skip and runso happy to
walk again. Jesus is amazing!

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

23One Sabbath Jesus was going t hrough the

grainfields, and as his disciples walked along,
they began to pick some h
eads of grain. 24The
Pharisees said to him, Look, why are they do
ing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?
25
He answered, Have you never read
what Dav id did when he and his compan
ions were hungry and in need? 26In the days
of Abiat har the high p
riest, he entered the
house of God and ate the consecrated b
read,
which is lawf ul only for priests to eat. And he
also gave some to his companions.
27T hen he said to them, The Sabbath was
made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28So
the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

Another time Jesus went into the syna

gogue, and a man with a shriveled hand
was t here. 2Some of them were looking for
a reason to accuse Jesus, so they w
atched
him closely to see if he w
ould heal him on
the Sabbath. 3Jesus said to the man with the
shriveled hand, Stand up in f ront of every
one.
4T hen J esus a
sked them, Which is lawf ul
on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to
save life or to kill? But they remained silent.
5He looked a
round at them in anger and,
deeply dist ressed at t heir stubborn hearts,
said to the man, Stretch out your hand. He
stretched it out, and his hand was completely
restored. 6Then the Pharisees went out and
began to plot with the Herodia ns how they
might kill Jesus.

Crowds Follow Jesus

19Jesus

answered, How can the g uests of

the bridegroom fast w
hile he is with them?
They cannot, so long as they have him with
them. 20But the time will come when the
brideg room will be taken from them, and
on that day they will fast.
21No one sews a patch of unshrunk c

will pull away from the old, making the tear
worse. 22And no one pours new wine into old
wineskins. Otherw ise, the wine will burst

he gave the name Peter), 17James son of Zebedee and his

means sons of thunder), 18 Andrew, Philip, Bart holomew,
Matt hew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Si

20T hen Jesus entered a h

ered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat.
21 W hen his fam i ly b heard a
bout this, they went to take
charge of him, for they said, He is out of his mind.
22A nd the teachers of the law who came down from Je
rusalem said, He is possessed by Beelzebul! By the prince
of demons he is driving out demons.
23So Jesus c alled them over to him and began to speak
to them in parables: How can Satan drive out Satan? 24If
a kingdom is div ided against itself, that kingdom cannot
stand. 25If a house is div ided against itself, that house can
not stand. 26And if Satan opposes himself and is div ided, he
cannot s tand; his end has come. 27In fact, no one can enter a
strong mans house without f irst tying him up. Then he can
plunder the strong mans house. 28Truly I tell you, people
can be forgiven all t heir sins and every slander they utter,
29but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never
be forgiven; they are g uilty of an eternal sin.
30He said this because they were sayi ng, He has an im

The leaders of the Jews

didnt want to believe
Jesus was the Messiah,
but evil spirits knew
who he was. They
cried and fell down
before him as they
pronounced he was
the Son of God. Jesus
hushed them.
Why do you think
he did that? Jesus
was concerned
that he might be
misunderstood. The
people were expecting
the Messiah to help
them overthrow the
Roman government. If
they knew he was the
Messiah, their plans
to rebel against the
Romans might get in
the way of Jesus plans:
to show the way of
love and to die for their
sins.

The Parable of the Sower

Again Jesus began to t each by the lake. The c rowd that

and sat in it out on the lake, w

by parables, and in his teaching said: 3Lis

ten! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4As
he was scattering the seed, some fell a long
the path, and the birds came and ate it up.
5Some fell on r
ocky places, w
here it did not
have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because
the soil was shallow. 6But when the sun came
up, the plants were scorched, and they with
ered because they had no root. 7Other seed fell
among t horns, which grew up and c hoked the
plants, so that they did not bear g rain. 8Still
other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew
and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty,
some sixty, some a hundred times.
9T hen Jesus said, Whoe ver has ears to
hear, let them hear.
10
W hen he was a lone, the Twelve and
the others around him a sked him a bout the
parables. 11He told them, The secret of the
kingdom of God has been given to you. But
to t hose on the outside everyt hing is said in
parables 12so that,
they may be ever seeing but never
perceiving,
and ever hearing but never
understanding;
otherwise they might turn and be
forgiven!a
13Then Jesus said to them, Dont you un
derstand this parable? How then will you un
derstand any parable? 14The farmer sows the
word. 15Some people are like seed along the
path, w
here the word is sown. As soon as they
hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word
that was sown in them. 16Others, like seed
sown on rocky places, hear the word and at
once receive it with joy. 17But since they have
no root, they last only a short time. When trou
ble or persecution comes because of the word,
they quickly fall away. 18Still others, like seed
sown among thorns, hear the word; 19but the
worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth
and the desires for other t hings come in and
choke the word, making it unfruitful. 20Others,
like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, ac
cept it, and produce a cropsome thirty, some
sixty, some a hundred t imes what was sown.

A Lamp on a Stand

21He said to them, Do you

bring in a
lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead,

dont you put it on its stand? 22 For whatever

is hidden is m
eant to be disclosed, and what
ever is concealed is meant to be brought out
into the open. 23If anyone has ears to hear,
let them hear.
24Consider caref ully what you hear, he
continued. With the measure you use, it
will be measured to youa nd even more.
25W hoever has will be given more; whoever
does not have, even what they have will be
taken from them.

The Parable of the Growing Seed

26He also said, This is what the kingdom

of God is like. A man scatters seed on the
ground. 27Night and day, whether he s leeps
or gets up, the seed sprouts and g rows,
t hough he does not know how. 28A ll by itself
the soil produces grain f irst the stalk, then
the head, then the full kernel in the head.
29A s soon as the g
rain is ripe, he puts the
sickle to it, because the harvest has come.

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

30Again he said, What

shall we say the
kingdom of God is like, or what parable s hall
we use to describe it? 31It is like a mustard seed,
which is the smallest of all s eeds on earth. 32Yet
when planted, it g rows and becomes the larg
est of all garden plants, with such big branches
that the b
irds can p
erch in its shade.
33 With many simi lar parables Jesus spoke
the word to them, as much as they could un
derstand. 34He did not say anyt hing to them
without using a parable. But when he was
a lone with his own disciples, he explained
every t hing.

Jesus Calms the Storm

35T hat day when even ing came, he said

to his disciples, Let us go over to the other
side. 36Leaving the crowd behind, they took
him a long, just as he was, in the boat. There
were also other b
oats with him. 37 A furious
squall came up, and the waves broke over the
boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38Jesus
was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The
disciples woke him and said to him, Teach
er, dont you care if we drown?
39He got up, rebuked the wind and said to
the w
aves, Quiet! Be still! Then the wind
died down and it was completely calm.

They went a cross the lake to the region of

Maybe no one but you could even read it! Try writing it
now that the light is on. Isnt it a lot easier to write? Now
everyone can read it.
The New Testament often uses light as a metaphor.
It says Jesus is the light of the world (John 1:49), and
Jesus says we are the light of the world, too. In Mark 4,
he uses light as a metaphor for doing good. When we do
good because we are Christians, other people will see it
and praise God (Matthew 5:16). For more on metaphors,
turn to Psalm 1.

and were drowned.
14T hose tending the pigs ran off and re
ported this in the town and countryside,
and the people went out to see what had hap

the man who had been possessed by the le

his right mind; and they were afraid. 16Those
who had seen it told the people what had
happened to the demon-possessed man
and told a bout the pigs as well. 17T hen the
people began to plead with Jesus to leave
t heir region.
18A s Jesus was gett ing into the boat, the
man who had been demon-possessed begged
to go with him. 19Jesus did not let him, but
said, Go home to your own people and tell
them how much the Lord has done for you,
and how he has had mercy on you. 20So the
man went away and began to tell in the De
capolis a how much Jesus had done for him.
And all the people were amazed.

J esus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a

21W hen J esus had a gain crossed over by

Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23He pleaded ear

had been subject to bleeding for t welve years.
26She had suffered a g reat deal under the care

yet instead of getting better she grew worse.
27W hen she heard about Jesus, she came up
behind him in the c rowd and touched his
cloak, 28because she t hought, If I just touch
his clothes, I will be healed. 29 Immediately
her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body
that she was f reed from her suffering.
30At once Jesus rea lized that power had
gone out from him. He turned a round in

the crowd and a sked, Who touched my

31You see the people crowding a gainst
you, his disciples answered, and yet you
can ask, Who touchedme?
32But
Jesus kept looking a round to see
who had done it. 33Then the woman, know
ing what had happened to her, came and fell
at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him
the whole truth. 34He said to her, Daughter,
your faith has h

freed from your suffering.
35W hile J esus was still speaking, some peo
ple came from the house of Jairus, the syn

said. Why bother the teacher anymore?
36 O verheari ng b what they said, Jesus told
him, Dont be afraid; just believe.
37He did not let anyone follow him except
Peter, James and John the brother of J ames.
38W hen they came to the home of the syna
gogue leader, Jesus saw a commot ion, with
people crying and wailing loudly. 39He went
in and said to them, Why all this commo

asleep. 40But they laughed at him.
After he put them all out, he took the
childs fat her and mother and the disciples
who were with him, and went in where the
child was. 41He took her by the hand and said
to her, Talitha koum! (which m

girl stood up and began to walk a round (she
was t welve years old). At this they were com

to let anyone know a bout this, and told them
to give her somet hing to eat.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve

Then Jesus went a round teaching from village to village.

by two and gave them aut horit y over impure spirits.
8T hese were his instruct ions: Take nothi ng for the jour

John the Baptist Beheaded

14K ing Herod heard about this, for Jesus name had be
come well k nown. Some were saying,a John the Baptist has
been r aised from the dead, and that is why miraculous pow
ers are at work in him.
15Others said, He is Elijah.
And still others claimed, He is a prophet, like one of the
prophets of long ago.
16But when Herod heard this, he said, John, whom I be
headed, has been r aised from the dead!
17For Herod himself had given orders to have John ar
rested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did
this because of Herodias, his brother Philips wife, whom he
had married. 18For John had been saying to Herod, It is not
lawf ul for you to have your brothers wife. 19 So Herodias
nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But
she was not able to, 20because Herod feared John and pro
tected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man.
When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzledb; yet he
liked to listen to him.
21Fi
nally the opportune time came. On his birthd ay
Herod gave a banquet for his high off icials and military
commanders and the leading men of Galilee. 22W hen the
daughter of c Herod ias came in and danced, she pleased
Herod and his dinner guests.
The king said to the girl, Ask me for anyt hing you want,
and Ill give it to you. 23And he promised her with an oath,
Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.
24She went out and said to her mother, What shall I ask
for?

Because the Pharisees

this synagogue ruler
may have risked his job
when he asked Jesus

a message came that
she had died. But Jesus
told the father, Dont

When they arrived
at the mans house,

With Peter, James,

45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get

leaving them, he went up on a mountainside
to pray.
47L ater that night, the boat was in the

48He saw the disciples straining at the oars,
because the wind was a gainst them. Shortly

crowd, he had compassion on them, because
they were like sheep without a shepherd. So
he began teaching them many things.
35By this time it was late in the day, so
his disciples came to him. This is a remote

36Send the people away so that they can go

touched it were healed.

That Which Defiles

The Pharisees and some of the teachers

of the law who had come from Jerusalem
gathered around Jesus 2and saw some of his
disciples eating food with hands that were
def iled, that is, unwashed. 3 (The Pharisees
and all the Jews do not eat unless they give
t heir hands a ceremonia l washing, holding
to the trad ition of the elders. 4W hen they
come from the marketplace they do not eat
unless they wash. And they observe many
other traditions, such as the washing of cups,
pitchers and kett les. a)
5So the Pharisees and teachers of the law
asked J esus, Why dont your disciples live ac
cording to the tradition of the elders instead
of eating their food with def iled hands?
6He re
plied, Isaiah was r ight when he
prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is
written:
These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
7 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human
rules.b
8You

have let go of the commands of God

and are holding on to human traditions.
9A nd he cont inued, You have a fine way
of setting aside the commands of God in or
der to observec your own trad itions! 10For
Moses said, Honor your fat her and moth
er,d and, Anyone who curses t heir fat her or
mother is to be put to d

that if anyone declares that what m

you no longer let them do anyt hing for t heir
father or mother. 13Thus you nullif y the word
of God by your tradition that you have hand
ed down. And you do many t hings like that.
14Again Jesus c
alled the c rowd to him and
said, Listen to me, everyone, and understand
this. 15Nothing outside a person can defile
them by going into them. Rather, it is what
comes out of a person that defiles them. [16]f

17A fter he had left the c

Dont you see that nothing that enters a per
son from the outside can def ile them? 19For
it doesnt go into their h
eart but into their
stomach, and then out of the body. (In say
ing this, Jesus declared all f oods clean.)
20He went on: What comes out of a per
son is what defiles them. 21For it is from
within, out of a persons heart, that evil
t houghts come sexua l immoralit y, t heft,
murder, 22 adultery, g reed, malice, deceit,
lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.
23A ll t hese evils come from inside and def ile

Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.
27First let the child ren eat all they want,

Witchcraft, spiritual

met it all in his work.
Mark tells here about

Some people say they

is real, and sometimes
there are real, evil
spiritual powers behind
books, games, videos

with these things can
damage a persons

The good news is
this: Jesus has more
power than any evil

his tongue was loosened and he began to s peak plainly.

Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

During t hose days another large crowd gathered. Since

they had nothing to eat, Jesus c alled his disciples to
him and said, 2I have compassion for t hese people; they
have already been with me t hree days and have nothing to
eat. 3If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the
way, because some of them have come a long distance.
4His disciples answered, But where in this remote place
can anyone get e nough bread to feed them?
5How many loaves do you have? J esus asked.
Seven, they replied.
6He told the crowd to sit down on the g round. When
he had taken the seven loaves and given t hanks, he broke
them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the peo
ple, and they did so. 7They had a few small fish as well; he
gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute
them. 8The people ate and were satisf ied. Afterward the dis
ciples picked up seven basketf uls of broken pieces that were
left over. 9About four thousand were present. After he had
sent them away, 10he got into the boat with his disciples and
went to the region of Dalmanut ha.
11T he Pharisees came and began to quest ion Jesus. To
test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. 12He sighed
deeply and said, Why does this generation ask for a sign?
Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it. 13Then he left
them, got back into the boat and c rossed to the other side.

The Yeast of the Pharisees andHerod

14T he disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for

warned them. Watch out for the y east of the Pharisees and
that of Herod.
16T hey disc ussed this with one another and said, It is
because we have no bread.
17Aware of t heir discussion, Jesus asked them: Why are
you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or
understand? Are your hearts hardened? 18Do you have eyes
but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And dont you re
member? 19W hen I broke the five loaves for the five thou

Twelve, they replied.

Jesus Heals a Blind Man atBethsaida

When he had spit on the m

25Once more Jesus put his hands on the m

his eyes were o

Peter Declares That J esus Is the Messiah

27Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages a round

Caesa rea Philippi. On the way he a sked them, Who do
people say Iam?
28T hey replied, Some say John the Bapt ist; others say
Elijah; and s till others, one of the prophets.
29But what
about you? he a sked. Who do you say
Iam?
Peter answered, You are the Messia h.
30Jesus w
arned them not to tell anyone about him.

Jesus Predicts His Death

31He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must
suffer many t hings and be rejected by the elders, the chief
priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be
k illed and after t hree days rise again. 32 He spoke plainly
about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke
him.
33But when Jesus t urned and looked at his disciples, he
rebuked Peter. Get behind me, Satan! he said. You do
not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human
concerns.

The Way of the Cross

34T hen he called the crowd to him a long with his disci
ples and said: Whoever w
ants to be my disciple must deny
themselves and take up t heir cross and follow me. 35For
whoever w
ants to save t heir lifeb will lose it, but whoever
loses t heir life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36W hat
good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit
their soul? 37Or what can anyone give in exchange for their
soul? 38If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this
adulterous and sinf ul generat ion, the Son of Man will be
ashamed of them when he comes in his Fat hers glor y with
the holy angels.
And he said to them, Truly I tell you, some who are
standing here will not taste death before they see that
the kingdom of God has come with power.

saw Jesus, it immediately t hrew the boy into
a conv ulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled
around, foaming at the mouth.
21Jesus asked the boys fat her, How long
has he been like this?
From childhood, he answered. 22It has
often t hrown him into fire or water to kill
him. But if you can do anyt hing, take pity
on us and helpus.
23If you can? said Jesus. Everyt hing is
possible for one who believes.
24 Immed iately the boys fat her exclaimed,
I do believe; help me overcome my unbe

25W hen Jesus saw that a crowd was run

spirit. You deaf and mute spirit, he said, I
command you, come out of him and never
enter him again.
26T he spirit shrieked, conv ulsed him vio

like a corpse that many said, Hes dead.

Can You Believe the Unbelievable?

Jesus gave his disciples power to drive out demons (Mark 3:1415). But the
disciples cant heal this particular boy who has an evil spirit. Why (Matthew
17:1920)? The boys father has heard of Jesus and his disciples and the many
people they have healed, so he brings his son. But when he says, if you can, he
shows he doesnt really believe in Jesus.

` How does Jesus answer him (Mark 9:23)?

` What does the father ask Jesus to do (Mark 9:24)?
Not believing in Jesus power to do something can keep your faith from
growing stronger. Like this boys father, ask Jesus to help you defeat your unbelief.

Read About It
Read Joshua 6:120. The people living in Jericho wonder what is going on. Why
in the world are 40,000 Israelite soldiers marching around their citywithout
saying anything? And why do the priests keep blowing trumpets? Its been
the same thing every day for six days. On the seventh day, something new
happensthe army marches around the city seven times. After the seventh
time, the Israelites give a loud shout and the wall of Jericho comes crashing
down.
Do you think the Israelites were a little surprised when God said
theyd defeat a city by blowing trumpets and walking around the wall?
They had just seen God part the Jordan River so they could easily
cross on dry land (Joshua 3:117). This gave them confidence. The
people trusted in God, and they showed their faith by obeying
Gods command. Its their faith in the Lord that makes the wall of
Jericho fall (Hebrews 11:30).

Experience It
Do you believe God can do anything? Think back over your life
and look for ways God has helped you in ways you never thought
he would. Ask family members if they have experienced amazing
things God has done when doubt may have been hanging around.
Ask for Jesus help to conquer your disbelief. He will lovingly lend
a hand just as he did with the father in Mark 9. Praise him for the
work hes already done in your life.
Go to Luke 1 for your next Bible study.

Whoever Is Not Against Us Is forUs

38
Teacher, said John, we saw some
one driving out demons in your name and
we told him to stop, because he was not one
ofus.
39Do not stop him, J esus said. For no
one who does a miracle in my name can in
the next moment say anything bad a bout
me, 40for whoever is not against us is for us.
41Truly I tell you, anyone who g

Jesus then left that p

the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to
him, and as was his custom, he taught them.
2Some Pharisees came and tested him by
asking, Is it lawf ul for a man to divorce his
wife?
3What did Moses command you? he re
plied.
4T hey said, Moses perm itted a man to
w rite a certificate of divorce and send her

5It was be
cause your hearts were hard
that Moses w rote you this law, Jesus replied.
6But at the beg inning of creat ion God made
them male and female.c 7For this reason a
man will leave his fat her and mother and be
united to his wife,d 8and the two will become
one f lesh. e So they are no longer two, but
one f lesh. 9T herefore what God has joined
together, let no one separate.
10W hen they were in the h

The Rich and the Kingdom of God

17As Jesus started on his way, a man ran

Good teacher, he a sked, what must I do to

18Why do you call me good? J esus an

19You know the commandments: You shall
not murder, you shall not commit adultery,
you shall not steal, you shall not give false

22At this the mans face fell. He went away

26T he disciples were even more a mazed,

The Request of James and John

35T hen J ames and John, the sons of Zeb

want you to do for us whatever we ask.
36What do you want me to do for you?

38You d

39We can, they answered.
Jesus said to them, You will drink the cup
I drink and be bapt ized with the bapt ism I

with you. Instead, whoever wants to become

Jesus asked him.

If I Were There...
Jesus was leaving Jericho. Everyone
was crowding around him, when one
voice rose louder than the rest. A
blind beggar sitting by the road was
shouting his head off.
If I were there, and I were this
blind beggar, Id keep shouting as
loud as I could to make sure Jesus
knew I was there. Id feel desperate
to get his attention. When people
told me to be quiet, Id shout even
louder. Id heard of Jesus, and Id
know he could heal me.
If I were there, and Jesus stopped
to talk to me, I might start crying. I
want to see, Id say.
If I were there, the first thing
Id see is Jesus face! If I could even

him along the road and tell everyone
who would listen to me what he

the c hief priests, the teachers of the law and

31They discussed it a mong themselves and

Jesus said, Neit her will I tell you by what

The Parable of the Tenants

12

Jesus then began to speak to them

in parables: A man planted a vine
yard. He put a wall a round it, dug a pit for
the winepress and built a watchtower. Then
he rented the vineyard to some farmers and
moved to another place. 2At harvest time he
sent a servant to the tenants to collect from
them some of the fruit of the vineyard. 3But

they seized him, beat him and sent him away

empt y-handed. 4T hen he sent another ser
vant to them; they s truck this man on the
head and treated him shamef ully. 5He sent
still another, and that one they k illed. He
sent many others; some of them they beat,
others they killed.
6He had one left to send, a son, whom he
loved. He sent him last of all, saying, They
will respect my son.
7
But the tena nts said to one another,
This is the heir. Come, lets kill him, and
the inheritance will be ours. 8So they took
him and k illed him, and t hrew him out of
the vineyard.
9What then will the owner of the vine
yard do? He will come and kill t hose tenants
and give the vineyard to others. 10Havent
you read this passage of Scripture:
The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
11 the Lord has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyesd?
12T hen the chief priests, the teachers of

Marriage at the Resurrection

18T hen the Sadducees, who say t here is no

19 Teacher, they said, Moses w rote for us
that if a mans brother dies and leaves a wife
but no child ren, the man must marr y the
widow and raise up offspring for his broth
er. 20Now there were seven brothers. The
f irst one married and died without leaving
any children. 21The second one married the
widow, but he also died, leaving no c hild. It
was the same with the t hird. 22In fact, none
of the seven left any child ren. Last of all,
the woma n died too. 23 At the resurrect ion a
whose wife will she be, s ince the seven were
married to her?
24Jesus replied, Are you not in error be
cause you do not know the Scriptures or the
power of God? 25When the dead rise, they will
neither marr y nor be given in marriage; they
will be like the angels in heaven. 26 Now about
the dead risinghave you not read in the
Book of Moses, in the account of the burning
bush, how God said to him, I am the God of
Abraham, the God of I saac, and the God of
Jacobb? 27He is not the God of the dead, but
of the living. You are badly mistaken!

The Greatest Commandment

28One of the teachers of the law came and

eard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had
h
given them a good answer, he asked him, Of
all the commandments, w
hich is the most
important?
29 The most im

Jesus, is this: Hear, OIsrael: The Lord our
God, the Lord is one.c 30Love the Lord your
God with all your heart and with all your
soul and with all your mind and with all
your strength. d 31The second is this: Love
your neighbor as yourself.e There is no com
mandment greater than these.
32Well said, teach

You are r ight in saying that God is one and
t here is no other but him. 33To love him with
all your heart, with all your understanding
and with all your strength, and to love your
neighbor as yourself is more important than
all burnt offerings and sacrif ices.

you would do if your
family was down to the
last $1 you had? How
would you spend it?
Jesus watched
the temple crowd
as people gave their
money. He heard the
coins drop into the
collection bin. The
rich people gave lots
of money, and Jesus
nodded. It was good
that they shared
their wealth. Then he
saw a poor widow.
She gave two coins,
worth less than a
penny. Yet giving this
much money was a
true sacrifice for this
woman. It was all the
money she hadit
would have bought
her a little food to eat.
In those days there
wasnt the help for
people that there is
todayshe didnt have
a welfare check coming
or food stamps. But
she had faith that God
would give her the
food, clothes and place
to live that she needed.
Jesus saw her heart.
And he sees your heart,
too. Whatever you
give from the heart is
always big in the eyes
of your Father.

The Widows Offering

41
Jesus sat down opposite the p
lace where the offer
ings were put and watched the crowd putting t heir money
into the temple treasury. Many rich people t hrew in large
a mounts. 42But a poor widow came and put in two very
small copper c oins, worth only a few c ents.
43Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, Truly I tell you,
this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the
others. 44They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her
povert y, put in everyt hinga ll she had to liveon.

As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples

said to him, Look, Teacher! What massive stones!
What magnificent buildings!
2Do you see all t hese g
reat buildings? replied Jesus.
Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will
be t hrown down.
3As Jesus was sitt ing on the M
ount of Olives opposite the
temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew a sked him privately,
4 Tell us, when will t hese t hings happen? And what will be
the sign that they are all a bout to be fulf illed?
5Jesus said to them: Watch out that no one dec eives
you. 6Many will come in my name, claiming, I am he, and
will deceive many. 7W hen you hear of wars and rumors of
wars, do not be a larmed. Such t hings must happen, but the
end is still to come. 8Nat ion will rise against nat ion, and
kingdom against kingdom. T here will be earthquakes in
various places, and famines. T hese are the beg inning of
birth pains.
9You must be on your g uard. You will be handed over
to the local councils and f logged in the synagogues. On ac
count of me you will stand before governors and k ings as
reached
witnesses to them. 10And the gospel must f irst be p
rought to
to all nations. 11W henever you are arrested and b
tria l, do not worr y beforehand about what to say. Just say
whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking,
but the Holy Spirit.
12Brother will bet ray brother to d
eath, and a fat her his
child. Child ren will rebel against t heir parents and have
them put to death. 13Everyone will hate you because of me,
but the one who s tands firm to the end will be saved.

mountains. 15Let no one on the housetop go down or enter
the h

back to get t heir cloak. 17How dreadf ul it will be in t hose
days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! 18Pray that
this will not take place in winter, 19because t hose will be

created the world, until now and never to
be equaled again.
20If the Lord had not cut short t hose days,
no one would surv ive. But for the sake of the
elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened
them. 21At that time if anyone says to you,
Look, here is the Messia h! or, Look, t here
he is! do not believe it. 22 For false messia hs
and false prophets will appear and perform
signs and wonders to deceive, if possible,
even the elect. 23So be on your g uard; I have
told you everyt hing a head of time.
24But in t hose days, following that dis
tress,
the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
25 the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be
shaken.a
26At that time people will see the Son of
Man coming in clouds with great power and
glor y. 27And he will send his angels and gath
er his elect from the four w inds, from the
ends of the e arth to the ends of the heavens.
28Now l earn this lesson from the fig tree:
As soon as its t wigs get tender and its leaves
come out, you know that summer is near.
29Even so, when you see t hese t hings hap
pening, you know that itb is near, right at the
door. 30Truly I tell you, this generation will
certainly not pass away until all t hese t hings
have happened. 31Heaven and e arth will pass
away, but my words will never pass away.

The Day and Hour Unknown

32
But a bout that day or hour no one
k nows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the
Son, but only the Fat her. 33Be on g uard! Be
a lert c! You do not know when that time will
come. 34Its like a man going away: He leaves
his house and puts his servants in charge,
each with their assigned task, and tells the
one at the door to keep watch.
35 Therefore keep watch bec ause you do
not know when the owner of the house will
come backwhether in the evening, or at
midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at
dawn. 36If he comes suddenly, do not let him
find you sleeping. 37W hat I say to you, I say

and kill him. 2But not during the festival,
they said, or the people may riot.

4Some of t hose present were sayi ng ind ig

the poor. And they rebuked her harshly.
6Leave her a lone, said J esus. Why are
you bothering her? She has done a beautif ul

with you,e and you can help them any time
you want. But you will not always have me.
8She did what she c

is preached throughout the w

has done will also be told, in memor y of her.
10T hen Jud as Isc ariot, one of the T

promised to give him money. So he w

13S o he sent two of his disc iples, telling

found t hings just as Jesus had told them. So
they prepared the Passover.

Mark 14 tells about

the last meal Jesus
ate before he was
crucified. Of course,
the disciples still didnt
understand what was
about to happen, but
Jesus did. The meal
was the Passover, the
meal the Jews eat to
celebrate God rescuing
them from Egypt back
in the days of Moses.
But Jesus gave a new
meaning to some of
the meal. He said the
bread stood for his
body and the wine
stood for his blood.
Today Christians
repeat the bread
and wine (or grape
juice) part of that
meal to remind them
of Jesus death for
their sins. People
call this celebration
Communion or the
Lords Supper. Does it
seem strange to talk
about celebrating
someones death? We
call it a celebration
because of the great
thing Jesus death
does for usit gives
us forgiveness of
our sinsand its a
celebration because
Jesus didnt stay dead!
He came to life again.

Surely you dont mean me?

Jesus knows what you feel and is with you.

45Goi ng at once to J esus, Judas said, Rabbi!

arrested him. 47Then one of t hose standing
near drew his s word and struck the servant
of the high p

48Am I leading a rebellion, said Jesus,
that you have come out with swords and
clubs to capture me? 49Every day I was with
you, teaching in the temple c ourts, and you
did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must
be fulf illed. 50 Then everyone deserted him
and fled.
51A

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin

53T hey took Jesus to the high priest, and

all the chief priests, the elders and the teach

him at a distance, right into the courtyard of
the high priest. There he sat with the g uards
and w

testimony against him: 58We heard him say,
I will destroy this temple made with human
hands and in t hree days will build another,
not made with hands. 59Yet even then t heir
testimony did not agree.
60T hen the high
priest stood up before
them and a sked Jesus, Are you not going
to answer? What is this testimony that t hese
men are bringing against you? 61 But Jesus
remained silent and gave no answer.
Again the high p

the Messia h, the Son of the B

62I am, said Jesus. And you will see the
Son of Man sitt ing at the r ight hand of the

heaven.
63T he high priest tore his clothes. Why

do we need any more witnesses? he a sked.

64You have heard the blasphemy. What do
you think?
They all condemned him as worthy of
death. 65Then some began to spit at him; they
blindfolded him, struck him with t heir f ists,
and said, Prophesy! And the g uards took
him and beat him.

Peter Disowns J esus

66W hile Peter was below in the courtyard,

one of the servant g irls of the high priest

68But he den ied it. I dont know or un

and went out into the entryway.a
69W hen the servant girl saw him t here, she
said a gain to t hose standing a round, This
fellow is one of them. 70Again he deniedit.
After a litt le while, t hose standing near
said to Peter, Surely you are one of them,
for you are a Galilean.
71He began to call down curse s, and he
swore to them, I d

Jesus had spoken to him: Before the roost

Very early in the morning, the chief

handed him over to Pilate.

The Soldiers Mock J esus

16T he sold iers led Jesus away into the palace (that is,

of soldiers. 17They put a purple robe on him, then twisted
together a crown of t horns and set it on him. 18A nd they
began to call out to him, Hail, king of the Jews! 19Again
and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit
on him. Falling on t heir k nees, they paid homage to him.
20A nd when they had mocked him, they took off the purple
robe and put his own c lothes on him. Then they led him
out to crucif y him.

The Crucifixion of J esus

21A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the fat her of Al

chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among
themselves. He s aved others, they said, but he cant save

9Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?
asked Pi late, 10k nowing it was out of self-interest that the
chief p

12What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king

13 Crucif y him! they shouted.
14Why? What c

But they shouted all the louder, Crucif y him!

Pilate had power.

He was the Roman
governor of Judea. Yet
with all his power, he
lacked courage to do
what he knew was

to the desires of the
jeering crowd, which
was being influenced
by the chief priests. In
his heart Pilate knew
Jesus was innocent, but
he heard the people
screaming to crucify
Jesus. Being liked was
more important to
him than doing right.

When do you allow
friends and others
to influence you into
doing wrong?

The normal custom

in the Roman Empire
was to leave crucified
bodies hanging on
their crosses. But
sometimes bodies were
given to families that
asked for them. Joseph
of Arimathea was bold
to ask for Jesus body.
He wrapped Jesus in
linen cloth. Spices were
put between the layers
of linen. These helped
to cover the odor when
a dead body began to
decay.

The Death of J esus

33At noon, darkness came over the whole land unt il t hree

out in a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? (which
means My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?).a
35W hen some of t hose standing near h

said, Listen, hes calling Elijah.
36Someone ran, f illed a s

a lone. Lets see if Elijah c omes to take him down, he said.
37With a loud cry, J esus b

38T he curt ain of the temple was torn in two from top
to bottom. 39And when the centurion, who stood t here in
front of Jesus, saw how he died,b he said, Surely this man

40Some women were watching from a distance. A mong
them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James

women had followed him and c ared for his n

other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were
also there.

The Burial of Jesus

42It was Prepa rat ion Day (that is, the day before the Sab
bath). So as evening approached, 43 Joseph of Arimat hea, a
prominent member of the Council, who was himself wait
ing for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and a sked
for Jesus body. 44Pilate was surprised to hear that he was
already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if
Jesus had already died. 45W hen he learned from the centu
rion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46So Joseph
bought some linen cloth, took down the body, w rapped it
in the linen, and p
laced it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then
he r olled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47Mary
