The Mount St Helens Disaster Mount St Helens is a volcano in the northwest of the USA. Until 1980, the countryside around the mountain had magnificent forests and la es, which were home to many animals and fish. !housands of visitors came to Mount St Helens to en"oy its natural #eauty. All that changed on 18th May, 1980. $hen the side of the mountain colla%sed, Mount St Helens eru%ted with the energy of a nuclear e&%losion. !he eru%tion did not come as a sur%rise to the e&%erts. 'or over a hundred years the volcano was (uiet, #ut in 1980, there were many events which indicated something terri#le was going to ha%%en. )n 1*th March, there was an earth(ua e under the mountain. A wee later, an eru%tion occurred, and a gigantic crater o%ened on the to% of the mountain. 'rom then until May, there were more earth(ua es and more eru%tions. !he situation was so dangerous that the authorities warned %eo%le to stay away from the region near the volcano. Mud from the landslide, and lava and ash from the volcano, devastated the region. 'ifty+seven %eo%le died on 18th May and tragically, many of them were in areas that were considered safe, Houses, #ridges and roads were destroyed and hundreds of %eo%le #ecame homeless. 'orests #urned to the ground within minutes, and more than -,000 #ears, deer and other animals were illed. Millions of fish also died, #ut many frogs survived, !he #eautiful mountain region now resem#led the moon . it was all grey stone. More than /0 years have %assed since that terri#le day, and nature is slowly returning to Mount St Helens. 0isitors can see some trees and other %lants and deer. And what will ha%%en in the future1 2y the year 3300, the region will again have #eautiful forests filled with all inds of animals, unless there is another terri#le eru%tion.
