President's Report
Our regular visitors have given us some great feedback from our recent facelift and it is pleasing that so many have taken the time to pass on their thoughts. Like me at home we could not decide on the colour scheme so we got some professional advice. Past President Ross Pulling was reflective on the passing of the carpet he chose back in 2006 so we gave him a souvenir piece for his collection. Recently your committee have attended a number of functions, this included end of season presentations for many of our Community Groups, such as netball, football and others. Not many members see all these committee obligations that fall under their roles and I thank my fellow committee members for their ongoing support and it is indeed pleasing to hear in how much high esteem Frankston is held. Two events that are indeed worthy of a mention. The first being the Blue Ribbon supported facility in the new Frankston Hospital emergency wing. This is dedicated to Police Officer Edward Keith Simmons who lost his life on Christmas Eve in 1957 whilst on duty at Olivers Hill at the age of 33. Prior to joining the Police Force Edward served with the Royal Australian Navy and then as a Frankston taxi driver. His son a Frankston RSL member spoke fondly of his late father and in particular the support from Legacy given to the family. Frankston has been a strong supporter of the Blue Ribbon Foundation and members Daryl Nation and wife Rhonda spend many hours in their roles with Blue Ribbon. Secondly, early in October Frankston hosted the now Annual Police Commemorative Service which honours all 157 officers who have paid the ultimate price in their line of duty of their 160 year history. The service was well attended by Victoria Police members and both Federal, State and local politicians. Elsewhere in this edition you will read a report from our hardworking Memorabilia working group. Their most recent display is of particular significance and I welcome your feedback. As we count down to the Christmas season we are all bracing for a turkey overload and the hope of a few days with the family. I would like to express my deep and heartfelt thanks to staff, committee and members for their support and patronage during the year. On that note, I close off and wish all the best for the festive season and what awaits us in 2014 as we count down to the Centenary of the start of The Great War with planning well advanced. a minute a year
Many of us can cast our minds back to times at Primary School when one day in November we had a big assembly, the Principal spoke a few words, played some bugle music. We tried hard to stay quiet for a minute and then back to play and the class room. Little did most of us fully understand the significance of what we were doing. In the fifties and sixties Australian History let alone our Military History was not on the curriculum. Funny how times and perceptions have changed as we now engage strongly with the students of today in a way that simply was not there when most of us were at school. One thing that stands out in recent times is that of the words of Canadian singer and songwriter Terry Kelly who on November 11 1999 was in a store in Nova Scotia when at 11 oclock all but one patron paused in remembrance. This experience he then put into words in a powerful song called A Pittance of Time that recalls so strongly why we pause. Two lines stand out; In peace may they rest May we never forget, why they died So why do we remember? The simple answer is so we do not forget, especially the 100,000 Australians who paid the ultimate price from WW1 to Afghanistan, and today are still away from their families across the globe. If you cannot make it to our Remembrance Day service because you are at work or just busy, do one small thing, make a note in your diary, send yourself an SMS or an Outlook note for 11am on the 11th and take a minute to reflect.

Its just fantastic for us as a Club to be supported by our Members each year when it comes to our VSK night. And once again we where not disappointed with a fantastic turn up on the night and everyone digging deep. We are delighted to announce we raised a whooping $5500. This money will of course go along way in supporting families with very sick or terminally ill children.

This year our annual assistance for Connecting Skills went towards some gardening tools that they were in need of. We were delighted to be able purchase for them 3 x Brush Cutter Saws, 3 Pole Saws & 3 x Hedge Trimmers, seen here pictured left. You may have noticed the RSL gardens have been looking very vibrant of late with many new shrubs and natives being planted. This is all thanks to the hard work of the Connecting Skills Team who are out each and every week working replanting, mulching, weeding and mowing lawns.

Cheque Presentation
City Life is an organisation in Frankston where many of the needy go to receive food assistance. It is a place where people can come and receive a hot nutritious meal, and sit and talk with others. They supply over 9000 meals each month to the needy. Those Friday night regulars are aware of our weekly Community Raffles and some even see our Presentations to our Community Partners but few are aware of the depth of our support. Since 2006 Frankston RSL has donated in excess of $1 This Christmas we are supporting City Life to feed families in million dollars from our Community Support Program. Feedback Issues
AIR CONDITIONING
Over the journey of our development one of the areas that has suffered is the air conditioning. Unfortunately some of the units werent changed and now are starting to suffer wear & tear. The Committee has been addressing this by the way of repairs but time is catching up with the units so we are currently talking with our suppliers about options for new units. This is an expensive exercise but progress is being made and we hope to commence late 2013 or early 2014.

Development Update
Currently the proposed development of our new welfare area, storage area and memorial landscaping are on hold awaiting final approval from council. Due to the delay we are now expecting to commence in Feb 14.

CRACKED PEPPER BOOKINGS

There has been some feedback regarding the booking process in Cracked Pepper and by now most know the system. We only take bookings for 8 people or more. With its increased popularity, particularly Friday and Saturday evenings, it has become increasingly hard to seat everyone at particular times. The current process is in place to allow some flexibility for patrons to be able to get a meal at their desired time. Our team is working with Members and Guests during these busy periods to endeavour to seat as many as possible. We do not want to turn anyone away but will continue to achieve the best possible outcome for everybody.

Car Parking
The committee is very aware that this is the most pressing issue currently facing our Members and Guests. They can assure you that a long term solution is foremost in their minds and a Sub Committee has been formed to bring some options to the members.

Vietnam Veterans
This year the Frankston District Sub Branch of the VVAA has had a significant increase in membership. We believe that this is due not only to our active social activities but to our partners being full members of our group. Our social outings have been a great success which can be seen by the increase of numbers attending these activities. Our Service on Vietnam Veterans Day was well attended and our guest speakers were from Pearcedale Primary School spoke very well. We also used the deaf signing choir from the School. This brought a tear into most of the audiences eyes. We recently had a sausage sizzle at Bunnings with all proceeds going into our welfare account so that we can help our Veterans or their families who are in trouble. Over the past few months we have been active in helping another Veteran move into RSL Park with some furniture he needed desperately. As this will be the last edition of Morse -Code before Christmas, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year. ******************* On Friday 16th August 2013, after some subterfuge that included members of State Branch, I accompanied Mrs Cheryl Myers and her husband Les, to the Annual observance of Vietnam Veterans Day conducted at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital. This service was followed by the presentation of the 6th Annual Leslie Farren Award for Region 1 of the RSL. The award was presented by the RSL State Vice President Mr George Logan RFD and was awarded to a very surprised Cheryl Myers, Secretary Frankston District Sub Branch. Cheryl not only does an outstanding job as Sub Branch Secretary and State Council Delegate, but also as a Welfare Officer where she has faced several challenging cases and there are local members who are indebted to to her caring attitude to this task. Cheryl is also a willing Social Assistant within the FDVVAA Sub Branch, where she assists with the organisation of functions and trips in liaison with the Naval Association and other groups within our community. Cheryl is a member of the Frankston Branch of the Partners of Veterans, where she has served on the executive Committee as President. Cheryl is also very active each FDVVA President, Ray Weston with Cheryl Myers week with the Frankston RSL as the minibus driver for day trips for the Widows Associations and TPI Groups, she is also a member of the Frankston RSL memorabilia committee.

Womens Auxiliary
With Christmas nearly upon us our ladies will be busy organising the Christmas Hampers which will be on display in the club very soon for everyone to support. September kept us busy as we were invited along to the Mayors Picnic, (sharing a tent with the YVC), to set up our trade table. It was a delightful day and a great opportunity for us to extend ourselves outside the RSL. Then later in the month we hosted our Area Meeting which saw over 80 ladies from Sister Auxiliaries attend. We were honoured at this meeting to be able to award Pam Merlo and Kaye Ruitenbeek with their Life Memberships for all the fantastic work they have done over many years. Remembrance Day will be just about upon us when you read this article and we will be paying our respects by laying wreaths at both ceremonies held by the RSL. We would also like to thank the Frankston RSL Footy Tipping Members for two donations we received from them this year. Our monthly meetings have been well attended and are always informative. Over the last couple of months we have had guest speakers come and address our ladies from a couple of organisations. In particular the Vic Police representative that gave our ladies valuable information and advice on getting older and living alone. We take this opportunity to thank you all for your support through 2013 and we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy New Year. Regards Dot Gillard, President.

Memorabilia Corner
AUSTRALIAS FIRST WAR - THE ANGLO BOER WAR (October 1899 to May 1902) At the time of Federation, in January 1901, Australia was at war! All six of the Australian colonies had sent contingents of troops to the war in South Africa. From 1901 these Australian troops answering Great Britains call were representing the new Commonwealth of Australia. Australian soldiers fought alongside British and other British Empire forces against the Dutch Afrikaner settlers (the Boer). Whilst military records are not accurate it is generally believed that 16,000 Australians volunteered to fight, including 60 nurses attached to the contingents. Australian losses were high, 282 were killed in action or died from wounds, 286 died from illness and 38 died from accidents and other causes. The first Australian woman to die in war was recorded with the death of volunteer nurse Francis Hines. The Boer War is the theme for our latest commemorative display. We are privileged to have a very rare collection of original Boer War memorabilia made available to us for the next few months (some items on display are over 110 years old). Why dont you take the opportunity to study and enjoy the display which will be in the club til the end of December? We are extremely fortunate to have this opportunity and, on behalf of all members and visitors, thank the Morgan Family for the generous loan of their collection.

Sporting Activities
BOWLS
Membership We currently have 169 members and we will welcome anyone who would like to join. No experience necessary as we provide free coaching. Opening Day We had a great day on 31 August with the official opening of the 2013/14 season, with the formal proceedings being performed by our Sub-Branch President, Brent Clyne, including rolling the first bowl. The good weather, the great condition of our grass green (thanks to Daniel, our green keeper) and the well-attended working bee prior to the day meant the surrounds were in pristine condition. All members had an enjoyable day of bowls, which was followed by a BBQ. Pennant Bowls This season we are playing in both Midweek and Saturday Pennant competition. We have one Ladies Only and three Mixed teams competing Midweek and five Mixed teams competing on Saturday. The season commenced on 1 October for Midweek competition and 5 October for the Saturday competition. Social Bowls This takes place on Tuesdays and Saturdays on our synthetic green and on Thursdays on both the synthetic and grass greens. Barefoot Bowls We already have a number of bookings for Corporate Barefoot Bowls Parties to date there are eight bookings for some 260 players. Also, Friday night social barefoot bowls is now underway. If interested then please contact Linda Milton on 9781 3768. We are always keen to accommodate new bowlers, so if youd like to try your hand, please contact the Bowls office on 9770 0709. Juniors are also very welcome. the top 4. Its very close between all the top 8 teams so the lads will need to focus over the next few weeks to figure in the finals. Again, Frankston players dominate the top break categories. And on Monday night, our VBSA offseason snooker team is struggling in a very strong B division. However, the players are getting valuable experience against good players so will benefit from the season. Finally, our two Over 55s sides finished the long season in mid August at opposite ends of the ladder. Ian Gilbees team again struggled against oppressive handicaps, whilst Pat Chungs team went all the way to the Grand Final before falling agonisingly short at the last hurdle. George Emerson starred in the finals but was unable to clinch the one game that would have catapulted him into the legends category. Well done anyway everybody. Our Club Snooker Championships have been concluded with young Ben Pottinger taking off his second Club Champions trophy in a row, again getting the better of the more fancied Darryl Tippett in a high standard final. In the handicap title, a resurgent Peter Akie held off a fast finishing Sean Andrew to take the Henry Merrett trophy. A good crowd attended to watch both games and to recognise other achievements through the year. The Club billiards championships are now underway. The Section is always keen to accommodate new players, so if you are interested in anything to do with snooker or billiards at Frankston RSL, please contact Mark Dunn on 9781 2626. Juniors and ladies are very welcome. Coaching can be provided free of charge. December 11th we will be holding our annual Xmas BBQ.6.30pm. All Dart Members are welcome. Dont forget to mark in your calendars Nov 27th as that will be the start of our Wednesday Social Darts. Names will need to be in by 7.30pm for an 8pm start. GOLF
The 2013 golf season is rapidly coming to an end with only 5 games to play including our finals of the club championship and our annual challenge match against the WOSSM at HMAS Cerberus. Hopefully we can regain the trophy and also win the Darts competition. Our annual challenge match against East Malvern RSL at Trafalgar golf club resulted in us regaining the trophy by the narrowest of margins. Congratulations to all that participated from both clubs for creating a great day. Congratulations and best wishes to all finalists for making the finals of the club championship. Our 4BBB competition for the Eric King trophy was held at Portsea Golf Club on 6th October. In a closely fought competition congratulations to Shane Scott-Smith, Paul Howard, Tony and Lesley Shead for defending their title they won last year. Its tough to win back to back titles so well done to all the team and those that competed to make it a great competition. I wish to thank all members of the committee for their tireless contributions during a very successful season. PIPES & DRUMS

Springtime heralds the start of our public activities. We played at the opening of the Bowls Season and at Somers Primary School Arts Fete and the Frankston Ladies Choir concert at the Robert Blackwood Hall at Monash University, Frankston. We will be playing at Remembrance Day Service at Frankston Cemetery on 10th November and then have Daylesford Highland Gathering on 7th December. In the lead up to our summer season of engagements and competitions we had a Band Camp over the weekend of 12/13 October. This gave us hard practice with some relaxed bonding time. This gave us concentrated practice that is extremely valuable in our pursuit of a good playing standard which is largely achieved through really tight teamwork. This year we have suffered a number of losses to our playing strength through serious illness. Our numbers are now depleted and we would welcome experienced pipers and drummers. We are always in need of young learners and can offer expert tuition and a introduction to a lifelong pastime that is a lot of fun as well as fulfilling and exciting.

INDOOR BOWLS
Here we are again, another year has gone by very quickly and Christmas is just around the corner. The Year 2013 has been a good year for us Indoor Bowlers, our teams have won both summer and winter pennant, and I am sure we all congratulate them on a great effort. In September we went to see King Kong a great show and I am sure it was enjoyed by all. Summer Pennant has just started up again and we have three teams, Frankston Meercats, Frankston Fillies and R.S.L Park we wish them all the best for the season. DARTS
Our Winter Season is now coming to a close and Demons (Div.2) & RSL Frankston (Div.1), both playing off in finals in a couple of weeks. It was fantastic to see Bill McCreath & Kevin Frost the recipients of the MPDL Doubles Trophy again. They have the track record now of winning it 4 times in 6 years, what a tremendous effort by both of them. BILLIARDS & SNOOKER

Billiards is the game of the moment at this time of year and we have plenty of teams and competitions running. Our Tuesday Southern team is going great guns and sits atop the ladder after 8 rounds, and our players feature heavily in the top break and games won categories. In the Thursday RSL competition, Ron Stecums and Pat Chungs teams are both doing very nicely thankyou after 12 rounds, though they have both just slipped out of

Young Veterans Centre News

In September we welcomed representatives from the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) David Cunningham, Director and Dave Saunders, Assistant Director and our local VAN Officer Ian Johnson. They were most impressed with our facility and thanks to Vice President John and Kerry for their support on the day.

YVC offsite activities and excursions

On Sunday 15th September RSL Park veterans held a barbeque for younger veterans. This was attended by Tracey Locke and the Coordinator.

YVC Raffle
With 2 major prizes of an HRT signed and framed print certified by Price Waterhouse and a remote control helicopter donated by Sabes Hobby House and a $100 Coles Myer gift voucher a raffle to raise funds, so please support this one.

Community and Public Relations

On Sunday 8th September the YVC had a marquee and market stall at the Mayors Picnic (George Pentland Gardens). Tony and Brent assembled and disassembled the marquee and transported it with the tables and chairs etc. The Womens Auxiliary participated with goods for sale and attended all day. Tracey Locke (a new Crew Member) also attended all day and was active in promoting the Centre handing out Poppies and YVC brochures.

Welfare Report
As always our Welfare Volunteers have been hard at work with their growing workload of hospital and aged care facility visitations. In addition to our also increasing luncheon visitors Dick and his team have been on their toes. Again the Ex Service Women have been enjoying their monthly outings thanks to Cheryl with trips and their quarterly luncheons and now preparing for Christmas. During September we hosted a special event for one of our Service members 100th Birthday. Arthur Johnny Saunders was born in Saffron Walden in the UK on September 15 1913 and served with the Australian forces after his arrival in Australia. In June we were approached by his Physician and over two months we were able to arrange a surprise party with nearly 45 of his close friends and family and a great cake from our local baker. Even at his ripe age Johnny a long-time resident at RSL Park is as sharp as a tack and it was so rewarding to assist with the traditional letters along with those from the RSL State and National Presidents. Our thanks and that of the family to the Bistro staff who made the day go so smoothly and we also presented Johnny with an ANZAC scarf. Welfare Officer Tony has also been busy at both the RSL and our Veterans Centre now with his new collection of mobility aids thanks to a kind donation that will enable us to offer assistance to many more of our clients. If any reader has surplus mobility aids please give Tony a call and we can arrange for collection. In October we again supported the Veterans Health Week program with presentations and information sessions at the Veterans Centre with the assistance of our Age Strong service provider PACE.

Programs and activities

At least 95 participants have attended the Dave Sabben talks and each week a photo of the door prize winner has been posted on the YVC facebook page. In October we welcomed WO 2 Ric Jackson (pictured right) to the Centre as he reflected on his 27 years with the ADF and in particular tours of both Iraq and Afghanistan. Rics wife Madison and Kerry (also pictured) are thanked for their drive and support in giving Ric the encouragement to make this significant move and only those in the know will understand.

Music
Members of the Peninsula Folk Club have been regularly attending the Tuesday music group to assist and support veterans. A short clip of the music group was posted on the YVC facebook and they performed several songs before an audience for the Dave Sabben talk on 24 September. We were indeed privileged that Dave (and wife Di) took such time to support us over 10 Tuesdays. SAFEtalk Program In discussions with the Veterans & Veterans Families Counselling Service (VVCS) it is proposed to hold a half day course on suicide awareness and prevention before the end of the year. This is as a follow up to R U OK Day in September. Anyone who is interested or wishes more information please call Kerry on 9783 4151 as we require a minimum of eight to run the program and eligibility criteria applies.
