2 A1 Tornado Controls
Until you are proficient in driving steam engines, switch on the Automatic Fireman to reduce your workload (to turn on the Automatic Fireman, click on the Options

screen of the main screen, click on Gameplay Options , select Automatic Fireman and then press the OK button).
There are several important controls: 2.1 Reverser This can be turned between Full Forward and Full Reverse and must be used before setting off. Use a high setting to give maximum power. This uses a lot of steam, so slowly wind the reverser down as you speed up. Press the <W> key to wind the reverser forwards and the <S> key to wind it backwards. A position indicator behind the control shows the current setting. 2.2 Regulator This allows steam to pass from the boiler to the cylinders, which turns the wheels and moves the locomotive. Press the <A> key to increase and the <D> key to decrease the amount of steam passed through the system. 2.3 Train Brakes This applies the brakes on the locomotive and any other attached vehicles that have brakes. Press the <> key to apply the brakes and the <;> key to release them. 2.4 Additional Controls Cylinder Cocks These releases excess steam from the cylinders before and after the engine has been moving. This process also drains excess water, preventing damage from occurring. Firebox Open this to shovel more coal onto the fire. Injectors Use this to bring water from the Tender into the Boiler Blower Use this to pull more air through the firebox, causing it to burn hotter and increase steam production. AWS Button Press this to acknowledge the AWS alarm when it activates Sande r This is to add additional grip to the wheels in slippery conditions. Whistle This is used for alerting the signalman or line side workers of your presence

3 Driving the A1 Tornado

3.1 Starting the Locomotive Start by winding the Reverser fully forward. Increase the Regulator by 5-10% Release the Train Brakes. Once these are fully released and the brake pipe pressure becomes constant (this is indicated in the Technical HUD by pressing F5). Open the Regulator to about 50-60% and the train will start to move. As you accelerate, wind the Reverser back towards neutral. Slowly move the Train Brake handle until it is in the running position. This reduces their steam usage. As speed increases, gradually adjust the Reverser and Regulator to maintain performance. 3.2 Stopping the Locomotive Always give yourself plenty of distance to stop a typical steam hauled train can take of a mile to stop from 60mph. Increase the Train Brake until is in the Apply position. Leave the brake control in this position and they will come on slowly until they reach maximum force.

If you only want to make a partial brake application, after applying the brake, release them until the control is in the Self LAP position as shown in the Technical HUD (F5). This will hold the braking force at its current level.
