CATHERINE MALANDRINO QUOTES

I design for a woman that dares to use all the codes of femininity to assert her personality. She uses her femininity as strength not as a weakness. The Catherine Malandrino woman expresses her individuality and personality through the way she dresses, she wants to look fabulous everyday. I design for the ultra-feminine, audacious, curious, and adventurous woman. I always have a woman in mind. She is an individual, a lover and a mother. She travels the world. My ideal woman marries the romance of Paris with the pulse of New York. I have mixed both my New Yorker and French identities by infusing the casual cool of the New York streets with the craftsmanship and refinement of French couture. I have a love story with Paris and New York and I couldnt live without both in my heart. My aesthetic ideals are inspired by the tradition of French couture from craftsmanship to draping and sewing. I combine this practice with the vibrant energy of the streets of New York to create clothes that are ultra feminine, comfortable, yet edgy with a touch of humor. I love when a dress is linked to an important moment of someones life and emerges as a memory. I design clothes that discreetly make a man want to take off. I like to create clothes that make you feel naked, by not showing the body but revealing your state of mind. The clothes whisper your feelings; it is the language of emotion and sensation. Its like when you discover a womans character, that you go deeper and deeper to learn and appreciate her full personality and soul. I like to explore the inside of a character by creating layers and texture to the silhouette. I design clothes to create moments of sensuality.

Unique craftsmanship strongly influenced by her French couture references: the lightness and the delicacy inherent in Catherines work being reminiscent of a European childhood in contrast of a more RocknRoll edge that is part of the New York City energy. Systematic creation of a three dimensional volume drawing a sculptural silhouette built around a curved line. Constant duality between an ultra-femininity and a roughness. Femininity being always approached as a strength. Perpetual research of sensuality and poetry. Always in motion

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY ABOUT THE FLAG DRESS

The French fashion designer Catherine Malandrino presented her Flag collection in New York in February 2001, draping her models in flowing dresses printed with the stars and Stripes and cutting iconoclastic notched T-shirts from the U.S flag. In doing so, she created a fashion show based on her American Dream - "Easy Rider" and vast spaces. She married two cultures: the couture of France and the casualness of America. Like Jasper Johns in his days, Catherine reinvented the stary banner in her own style. Her boldness seduced New York department store Bergdorf Goodman, which displayed the design in its windows on Fifth Avenue in September that same year. With the trauma of September 11, the Flag collection seemed premonitory. During this difficult time, the Flag once again became the symbol of eternal America. Not long after stylists and A-list celebrities all wanted a piece of Catherine's patriotic fashion show, Madonna wore the "Flag" t-shirt on her world tour and John Galliano for the finale of his haute couture show in Paris. The most famous of the designs, however, was to become the "Flag" dress. Halle Berry, Julia Roberts and Sharon Stone were photographed on the covers of woman's magazines wearing the cult dress. Celebrities as flag bearer of the label, were all it took to inscribe Catherine Malandrino on the list of noted fashion designers. The Zandra's Rhodes' Fashion & Textile Museum in London requested the dress which has been part of the permanent exhibition since then.
