OPEN HOUSE: The Chapman Historical Museum is holding an Open House on Wednesday, January 29th from 10am Noon for anyone interested in learning about volunteer opportunities at the museum, and how you can help contribute to our mission of preserving and presenting local history. Right now, the museum is looking for receptionists, tour guides and people to assist with childrens programs. In the spring, the museum will also need volunteers who like to garden. For more information, please contact Kim Harvish at 793-2826 or at educator@chapmanmuseum.org. ANNIES PROJECT- The 2014 offering of Annies Project is now open for registration for the Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Warren and Washington Counties. The course will be starting on February 6th and running for six consecutive sessions on Thursdays from 9:30am 2pm at 50 West High Street, Ballston Spa, NY 12020. Annies Project, created in 2003 by Ruth Hambleton, University of Illinois Extension, is an agricultural risk management program that is dedicated to strengthen womens roles in the modern farm enterprise. The curriculum is designed to empower women farmers in managing information systems used in critical decision making processes and to build local networks throughout the state. This program was recognized in July of 2011 by the White House, named as Champion of Change with Ms. Hambleton appointed to the White House Rural Committee. Ms. Hambleton has modeled her program after the life of her mother, Annette Kohlhagen Fleck, who was married to a farmer for 50 years before her passing in 1997. The 2014 offering of the curriculum boasts many new and exciting features for participants in New York. Women who participate will have access to the New York State Annies Project Website that not only provides information and updates, but also hosts a chat forum for interactions between classes. Current students and alumni can interact with those from their own class or other women in different regions of New York. Those interested in registering should contact Steve Hadcock at 518-380-1497 or seh11@cornell.edu or visit the website (www.nyanniesproject.org) to register. The course is $60 per person with limited scholarships available to those who inquire. The deadline for registration is January 10th, 2014. New York Annies Project has been made possible Cornell Cooperative Extension and by gracious funding from Farm Credit East, Workforce Development Institute, NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets, USDA Risk Management Agency, and the Northeast Center for Extension Risk Management Education. This material is based upon work supported by USDA NIFA (National Institute of Food & Agriculture) under award number 2012-4920020031. Cornell Cooperative Extension provides equal program and employment opportunities. Accommodations for persons with special needs may be requested by contacting a Cornell Cooperative Extension CCE of Saratoga County at 518-885-8995

Georgie is a handsome boy! Just look at that hair! He is quite active and absolutely goes crazy with catnip!!! He does play quite rough, especially if catnip is involved, so sometimes he will play bite and scratch from excitement. He does like to play with other cats, but he is a rough player. So he would be better living with another cat who is playful and outgoing, and not timid. Come and meet this big guy he may be the cat for you! Louie is a stunning black cat!! He is one to come and see for sure, especially if you love black cats!! He is very playful, and can be bold! He was a bit nervous of getting his picture taken, but warmed up as soon as he knew that he was safe! He is loving, playful, and a great cat! Come and see him!! Snow is a stunning white cat! She came to the shelter as a mom with kits, and that is how she came to the shelter. She now though, prefers no other cats. But she does like humans. Snow is easy going and would be happy in a quiet home, where she can have a nice bed to lay in. She can get very playful and enjoys the feather toys! If you are looking for an only cat, Snow may be the right one for you! Cougar, what a face!! This guy is still a pup, about 6 months now. He is a type of hound mix, and will be large when grown. Right now he is all legs!! Cougar is a typical puppy with lots of energy, and just wanting to play and be with someone. He loves other dogs, and would love to have a playmate! Polo is a about 1 year old and weighs 26 pounds. He is a very handsome, personable fellow that is looking for a home of his own. Buddy is 3 years old. He gets along with adults, children and other animals. He has been well socialized at the shelter and he is partially house trained and pad trained. SPONSORED BY:

EASTON NEIGHBORS TO OBSERVE HIATUS- The Easton Neighbors will not be meeting for the months of January and February 2014. Our next meeting will occur March 3, 2014. WANT TO PAY LESS FOR QUALITY ORGANIC FOODS? If you prefer to eat organic food but can't always stomach the prices, you may be interested in the Greenwich Food Buying Club. We are community-minded people from a number of towns in the area who like eating well. Last spring we formed a new buying club to access non-perishable organic foods at near wholesale prices. Often they're one-third (or more) lower than what you'd have to pay in a supermarket or natural foods store. We order things like beans, grains, flours, nuts, nut butters, dried fruits and coffee. All the beans and grains come from Cayuga Pure Organics and are grown in New York. Our other supplier is Tierra Farm, a nut processor/coffee roaster located only 60 miles to our south. By working together we are able to buy directly from suppliers and fill individual members orders. In most cases we purchase products in bulk in large bags or boxes and divide the product up according to people's requests. For some items though we buy cases of prepackaged product. With everyone contributing a few hours of work, our buying club can pass on the big savings to the members. The most common job is weighing and bagging bulk foods at a central distribution site but there are also other tasks to be done. If you are interested, don't procrastinate. Our next order goes out at the end of January so the deadline for individual members to place their orders is January 25. We only plan to order two or three times in 2014. Contact Tracy Frisch, tracyf@fastermac.net or 518/692-8242 (no voice mail) with questions or to participate.

Some Things to Watch in 2014 The 2012- 2013- 2014 Farm Bill The 2012 effort to pass a Farm Bill failed. Congress punted by granting a one-year extension. The 2013 effort was a struggle that will spill over into 2014. In particular, the fight over how far to cut SNAP benefits has put Democrats and Republicans at loggerheads. Based on the latest developments, we can expect to see one some time in January. However, the specifics of the Farm Bill remain to be seen. Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling. The new COOL born, raised, and slaughtered regulations became effective on November 23, 2013. The battle to overturn these regulations, which are intended to protect American swine and cattle producers from foreign competition, is waging on three fronts Capitol Hill, the federal courts, and the WTO. The major livestock and meatpacking trade associations have challenged COOL in the federal courts. The COOL supporters, including USDA, R-CALF and HSUS, prevailed on the first round of litigation. COOL opponents have appealed this decision. We can expect a decision sometime in the next few months on this matter. Canada and Mexico have also challenged the new mCOOL regulations at the WTO because COOL provides an incentive to discriminate against Mexican and Canadian livestock. Lawyers, Dust and Feathers the Alt case. One of the major cases decided this year was Alt v. EPA. In Alt, EPA alleged that a poultry farmer needed a NPDES permit on the basis that the farm was discharging pollutants when stormwater washed dust, feathers and litter away from the barnyard area. Under this theory, nearly every CAFO would be required to obtain a NPDES permit, a costly and onerous process. A federal judge held that the farm was not required to obtain a NPDES permit because runoff from the barnyard area is an agricultural stormwater discharge that is exempt from permitting requirements under the Clean Water Act. While this decision is a major victory for animal agriculture, its not quite time to uncork the champagne. EPA and the environmental groups that intervened in the suit have decided to appeal this case. Arguments will take place later this year and we can expect a decision towards the end of 2014 or the beginning of 2015. FSMA Rollout FDA is under the gun, or actually a court order, to write the rules that implement the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2011. FDA has to propose, accept public comment on, and finalize several major regulations pursuant to FSMA by June 30, 2015. While these rules will not be finalized until 2015, FDA is accepting public comments on their various proposals through the early months of 2014. We can expect that the new FSMA rules will have a substantial impact on various segments of the ag sector. GMO Labeling. Whether food manufacturers should be required to label their products that include genetically engineered ingredients has been a hot button issue for the past few years. Supporters of mandatory labeling have hit several roadblocks at the federal level, so they have turned to state governments to require labeling. While highprofile ballot initiatives in California and Washington state have failed, supporters have made inroads with some measures in the northeastern states. For instance, Maine and Connecticut have labeling measures in place, but they only become effective if a critical mass of other states require GMO labeling. In order to avoid a patchwork of various state labeling laws, we may see efforts ramp up in 2014 to pass some type of law regarding GMO labeling at the federal level, which would preempt state labeling laws. The Renewable Fuels Standard. The fight over the Renewable Fuels Standard will likely come to a head this year. Much of the political support for the policy has dwindled in the face of opposition from a growing number of strange bedfellows including environmentalists, livestock producers, and the oil industry. With petroleum consumption decreasing, the RFS mandate for renewable fuel use is hitting the blend wall much sooner than was anticipated when the legislation was drafted in 2007. In response to the blend wall concerns, EPA has proposed lowering the targets for corn ethanol use in 2014. Opponents of the RFS believe this is a step in the right direction, but not far enough. Meanwhile, supporters believe this is a step down a slippery slope. We can expect 2014 to bring us legislative proposals to gut the corn ethanol portion of the RFS. We can also expect RFS supporters to sue EPA if it finalizes its proposal to reduce the corn ethanol mandate. Trade Agreements. The Obama Administration is currently negotiating two major trade agreements that could have a major long-term effect on agricultural trade. The Trans-Pacific Partnership could significantly improve our access to export markets in the Asia-Pacific region. However, agriculture is a major sticking point in these negotiations. Japan, in particular, wants to protect much of its agricultural industry from foreign competition. If this is allowed, then other countries to the agreement will likely seek similar protections, making the TPA a much weaker deal for US agriculture. The second major trade agreement under negotiation is the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). This is a proposed trade agreement between the US and the European Union. While this trade agreement could be the biggest trade deal in the world, agriculture could be a major sticking point in the negotiations. Conflicts over GMO acceptance in some of the EU member countries, the use of hormones for growth promotion, and animal welfare practices could This weeks ag report is be roadblocks for increasing trade with the EU. The TTIP negotiations have not progressed as sponsored by: far as TPA, so we can expect developments in CALHOUN EQUIPMENT TPA to influence the outcome in TTIP. 518-753-6921 Immigration Reform. The story for immigration Route 40 Melrose reform in 2014 will likely be a disappointment. While it seemed possible that some type of visit our web page: bipartisan immigration reform deal could have www.addigest.com/Calhoun/ads.htm emerged in early 2013, that window has closed.

MASTER GARDENER TRAINING- Cornell Cooperative Extension in Warren County is now accepting applications for the new 2014 Master Gardener Training Program. Space is limited, so contact the office soon for more information and an application. Through the Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program, our Master Gardeners obtain a sense of accomplishment and community spirit. They also enjoy the camaraderie and intellectual stimulation from their fellow Master Gardeners. After enrolling in the course, the participants are provided with a binder of information that supplements the weekly presentations from Cornell University faculty, Cooperative Extension staff, and local experts on a wide range of horticultural topics. The topics include basic botany, entomology, soils, home lawn care, vegetable and fruit gardening, composting, organic gardening and other practical and interesting subject matter. Local regional training is held in Ballston Spa on Mondays from late January to mid-April. Upon completion of the 11-week lecture series, volunteers also receive a Cornell Soil pH Test Kit that will be useful for practical application of the training. There are many opportunities for Master Gardener volunteers to work with community groups, schools, and the gardening public in order to educate and provide useful organic gardening information. Master Gardener meetings are relaxed and allow the sharing of ideas, continued training, and interesting tours and outings to local gardens, woodlands, preservation sites, and other areas. For more information, please call Cornell Cooperative Extension in Warren County at: 518-623-3291 or by e-mail at: warren@cornell.edu. THE CREATION- On Sunday, January 26 at 2pm, Hubbard Hall will present a Music from Salem Listening Club about Haydns masterwork The Creation, led by Peter Subers. Franz Josef Haydn visited London twice during the 1790s. There he heard the oratorios of Handel for the first time and returned to Vienna determined to write his own work in the form. The libretto he used, based on the Genesis story, the Psalms, and Miltons Paradise Lost, had been originally refused by Handel, but Haydn used it to deliver a masterpiece that ranks among his finest. Described by one critic as the very embodiment of Enlightenment idealism, The Creation remains an abiding testament not only to the grandeur of our world, but to its sacred origin as well. Join us as we explore, through recording and discussion, this magnificent work. No musical knowledge is required, just a willing set of ears. The January 26 Listening Club will take place at 2:00pm at Hubbard Halls Dance Studio in Cambridge, NY. Cost is $10. Pay at door, or pre-register at hubbardhall.org or 518-677-2495 Music from Salem is a chamber music series that brings together musicians of international reputation to prepare and perform chamber music, as well as to lead educational workshops and seminars, in the peace and beauty of rural Washington County, New York. Blinkys Random Thoughts

When it happens, this will be the obit: Please join us in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community. The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71. Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and Captain Crunch. The grave site was piled high with flours. Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was considered a very smart cookie, but wasted much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times, he still was a crusty old man and was considered a positive roll model for millions. Doughboy is survived by his wife, Play Dough, three children: John Dough, Jane Dough and Dosey Dough, plus they had one in the oven. He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart. The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.
