Hi girls! I’m Emily Schenck, your 2009-2010 VAC MIT

Mom. I’m SO excited to work with all of you guys and I
know this is going to be a fantastic year. In this release,
you will find a questionnaire (please fill out and return to
me by October 5th!), tips on recruitment, and important
things your MITs need to know. I hope you find this help-
ful and if you have any questions at all, please don't hesi-
tate to ask!
With undying love for MIT/AIT 2009 (PROMOTE, PRO-
MOTE, PROMOTE) and my amazing
counterparts,
I remain Emily Sara Schenck
Your 2009-2010 VAC MIT Mom
I want to get to know my fantastic counterparts so please answer
these questions and email them to me by October 5th! (copy and
paste them into an email)

1. Name:
2. Cell phone number:
3. Favorite line from a song:
4. Favorite TV show:
5. Random fact about you:
6. Favorite convention and why?
7. Favorite memory in BBYO?
8. Why did you want to be MIT Mom?
9. What do you want to improve in your chapter this year?
10. What are you most excited about for this year?
I know you all have had your Intakes already (YAY for all the new mem-
bers...so exciting!) but this year, we’re not stopping in September. Re-
cruitment should be YEAR-ROUND; it’s so important to get as many new
members as possible.
Recruitment Tips:
• Call your temple, JCC, or other Jewish group in your community. Ask for a list of
high school students and their phone
numbers.
• Once you get a list of potential members, call them! However, don't make all the
calls yourself. Divide the calls between yourself and other ENTHUSIASTIC and
ACTIVE members.
• Contact the callers at least 3 days before the calls need to be made and give
them the necessary information about the next program.
• The caller needs to:
-Introduce herself and explain that she is from BBYO
-Explain reason for calling (upcoming program)
-Give details (date, place, time)
-Offer a ride to the event
-Be enthusiastic and ask if they have any friends who can be contacted
Tips to make your phone calls successful:
• Send out information (via email, snail mail, etc.) about BBYO/the
program before you make your calls. That way, the call isn't
surprising.
• Make calls no later than 7 days before the event. Then, send out an email re-
minder as the event gets closer.
• Only make the calls if you are planning to attend!
• If someone says she can’t make it, ask why; however, don’t be too pushy! Of-
fer alternatives if they can’t make it.
Sample phone call:
Caller:
Caller Hey Melissa! This is Emily Schenck from BBYO youth group.
I’m calling to remind you about the upcoming pizza party we have at the JCC.
Prospect:
Prospect Hey. Oh yeah, I heard about that.
Caller:
Caller It should be really fun, the food will be really good and a bunch of people
are coming. We’ll do some fun games and activities too.
Prospect:
Prospect I’m not sure if I can go.
Caller:
Caller Well even if you can’t come Sunday, we have a lot of stuff going on
throughout the year like sleepovers, dinners, dances, and community service.
It’s a really awesome way to make new friends.
Prospect:
Prospect Oh well that sounds pretty cool!
Caller:
Caller Please try to come on Sunday! I can give you a ride. It starts at 2, so I
can pick you up at 1:45, and when we get there I’ll introduce you to everyone!
Prospect:
Prospect Ok, I’ll come.
Caller:
Caller Ok good! I’m excited to see you! And if you have any other Jewish friends
that you want to bring with you, they are more than welcome to come!
What to do with new members at the event:
• Make them feel welcome: show how excited you are that
they are there!
• Introduce them to the rest of the chapter.
• When talking in a large group, make sure they feel included
and include them in the conversation.
• Don’t use “BBYO language.” Instead of saying you’re the
“MIT Mom,” tell them you’re in charge of membership
for the chapter.
• Have each member write down their name, number, and
email address on the signup sheet. Make sure to also
have BBYO registration forms available for them to fill
out there!
• Before they leave, tell them about the next couple of
events so they can plan ahead.

What NOT to talk about with new members at the event:

• Illegal activities, even if they take place outside of BBYO
• Hookups
• Never Have I Ever
• A bad BBYO experience
Make sure to let the other members know not to mention
these, either!
What to do AFTER the event:
• Keep in contact with your local temple or JCC and make sure you
are updated about any new families who have
recently joined.
• Make sure you keep in contact with the prospective
members who attended, as well as the ones who couldn't
attend.
• Call the girls who came and let them know how excited the chap-
ter was to have them there. Remind them about the next event,
as well.
• Add them on Facebook and keep in touch!
• Build a relationship. These girls will keep coming to events if
they know they have a friend in the chapter.
• Invite them to your chapter Facebook group.
• Give your Mazkirah the prospective members’ phone
numbers for their calling list.
• Explain how to use B-linked.org to the new members
(IMPORTANT: b-linked is not working that well right now, so tell
them to contact their city directors if they have any ques-
tions!)
• CONTINUE TO USE THE ORIGINAL PROSPECTIVE
MEMBER LIST THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. Just because some-
one didn't come to one event does not mean they aren't inter-
ested.
IMPORTANT:
IMPORTANT DON’T spend too much time teaching new members these
things until they’re becoming comfortable with BBYO. You don’t want to
overwhelm members who are still getting used to the BBYO environment.

BBYO history
Explain the origins of BBYO, BBG, and AZA. Knowing about the basics of
BBYO will help them understand and grasp the idea of our wonderful or-
ganization! If you don’t know what to put, check out the releases on the
Aym Ha-Chaverot dashboard page. There are resources from around
the order with basic history. There is also a history of BBYO on
BBYO.org! Feel free to ask me or any other knowledgeable member also!
BBYO Breakdown
International—>regional—>council—>chapter. A good way to do this is
by using circles or some other shape inside of one another. Be sure to
explain how some regions don't have councils and stuff like that, because
it’s kind of confusing!
Your chapter
Explain the history of your chapter (if you don’t know, ask your N’siah,
advisor, or alumni you know). Make sure to include your chapter’s col-
ors, mascot, etc.
Business meetings
Remember how confused you were at your first business meeting? Ex-
actly. Go over everything, including Menorah Pledge, motions: what they
are, what they look like, motion, second, call etc.
You might want to also explain when and why we stand up or yell stuff out,
just so the girls aren't completely lost in their first meeting.
Six folds
Go over what each fold is and how it relates to BBG. Maybe give an ex-
ample of a program that uses each fold.
Programming
Answer the question why do we program? Then explain how one would go
about planning a program, give examples of fun multi-fold programs!
Eastern Region (NCC and VAC)
Where it’s located, our mascots, colors, and obviously ELLEN!
Conventions and dances
List all of our regional and council conventions and give a brief
overview of each. If you want to be extra helpful, which I know all
of you do :), it would be fantastic to inform the MITs what to bring
to each convention! (clothes, etc.)
SUMMER PROGRAMS
Explain the basics of CLTC, ILTC, Kallah, Project Impact, etc. The
most important one is CLTC! Include pictures, stories, or anything
else that will make the girls want to go. If you haven’t been, ask a
girl who has to write something short about it.
International and council/regional board
Explain each position, what they do, when they’re elected, and who
currently holds each position! Make sure you tell them that one day
it could be them!
Chapter board
Introduce your chapter board. Be sure to include their contact in-
formation and encourage the MITs to add them, as well as the rest
of the chapter, on Facebook!
