1. A line load of q per unit length is applied at the ground surface as shown in figure P1. Given: = 3000/ 2 and = 0 (a) Plot the variations of z , _x, and _xz against x= +20 ft to = 20 ft for z = 8 ft. (b) Plot the variation of z with z from z = 0 ft to z = 20 ft for = 0. (c) Plot the variation of z with z from z = 0 ft to z = 20 ft for = 5ft. 2. Refer to figure P1. Assume that = 45 / and = 90 . (a) If = 5, plot the variation of z , x , and xz against for the range = 10m. (b) Plot the variation of z with z for the range z = 0m to z = 10 m(for = 0). (c) Plot the variation of z with z for the range z = 0m to z = 10 m(for = 0) 3. Refer to figure P1. Given that = 3500 /, = 0 , v = 0.35, and z = 5ft, calculate the major, intermediate, and minor principal stresses at = 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 . 4. Refer to figure P1. Given that = 38/, = 90 , = 0.3, and = 1, calculate the major, intermediate, and minor principal stresses at = 0, 0.5, and 1.5. 5. A line load of 3500 / is applied at the ground surface as shown in figure 2. Determine the major principal stresses at the grid points and draw the stress contours. What is the shape of these stress contours?
