A FORMER Fiji resident now living in New Zealand is worried about her safety after being attacked in broad daylight near her Papatoetoe home last Thursday. Praveet Singh, 40, who moved to New Zealand in 2003, had gone for a walk when she encountered her attacker on the street near her home. The attack left Mrs Singh with fractured eye sockets, a broken nose and bruises. The mother of two had reportedly tried to seek help from one of her neighbours but the man continued to wash his car while Mrs Singh was being assaulted. The New Zealand Herald quoted a man who said he was reluctant to intervene as he had thought it was a domestic assault. Another neighbour was also interviewed and he stated he was afraid that he might be charged with assault if he had been involved. A 26-year-old man appeared in the Manukau District Court charged with one count of common assault and another of injuring with intent to injure. In a post last Friday on a social networking site, Mrs Singh questioned the unity of Fiji-Indians living in the Papatoetoe area and said she will never be able to feel safe in her own home and street. Mrs Singh posted that an intoxicated man punched and physically abused her "in front of more than 15 FijiIndians who stood and watched the entire ordeal like they were watching some show, while I screamed and yelled for help". "The Violence Against Women Decree

The Peoples Republic of China has commended Fijis Look North Policy and the move in making China the focus of the policy. The Vice Minister of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Mr Yu Hongjun, who is leading a friendship delegation on a three day visit to Fiji, commended Fiji for finding its own pathway to the future. In the highlight of his visit that saw him meeting participants of the China Executive Leadership Academy in Pudong (CELAP) in Shanghai, he reminded Fijis top officials of the path and commitment they had made to develop their country. We respect the right of the people of Fiji to choose their development consistent with their own national characteristic and believe the people
have the capability to move it forward in building their own future, Mr Hongjun said. He said no matter what happens to international landscape in the future, China remains committed to being a good neighbour. The Minister paid a courtesy call to Attorney General, Mr Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum and Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola. Mr Hongjun said China was happy to see the progress Fiji was making in its preparations to hold elections in September this year and it was keen to assist in whatever way it can. Ratu Inoke welcomed the offer and appraised the Vice Minister on the role Fiji was playing in the international as well as the regional arena.
Dhirendra Ram, the 52-year-old driver who allegedly caused the death of two people in a car accident along the Kings Road last week, was released on a $1000 surety bail. The Australian citizen appeared before Magistrate Charles Ratakele at the Nausori Magistrates court. Ram, who was represented by Sunil Kumar, was also ordered to surrender his travel documents to the court registry. He was cautioned, interviewed and
The $80 million Nadi International Airport upgrade is slowly taking shape with works gaining momentum says Airports Fiji Limited (AFL) Board chairman Faiz Khan. With special emphasis on new and improved passenger facilities such as retail shopping and dining, Mr Khan says there could be a delay in the completion of works because AFL wanted works to be done to the best standards. While works are projected to complete by mid-April next year, Khan says the magnitude of these works may delay the completion dates. Well work is slowly picking up momentum and things are shaping up well so we are still on schedule but we would not rush it, he said. Many of the changes would be integrated into a new, larger departure lounge extending out to the edge of the passenger walkways that provide access to and from departing or arriving
aircraft which will substantially give more space to redesign the entire area and introduce a diversified shopping experience with a range of food outlets selling food freshly prepared on the premises. He said the changes would also improve passenger facilitation by creating more space for passengers to be comfortably processed when arriving or departing from Nadi. Mr Khan stressed a significant and progressively major source of income for AFL was through its commercial activities at the airport. They are vital to the financial health of the company and, in turn, bolster AFLs broader activities to support developments at Nausori Airport and the 13 outer island airports AFL manages on behalf of the Government, he said. Once complete, Nadi Airport will be on par with international airports around the world.
charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving by the Police. Inspector Subhan Ali was the Police prosecutor who appeared for the case. In a statement by Police, the post mortem examination conducted on the deceased revealed the two victims died of injuries sustained consistent to a motor vehicle accident. The case has been adjourned to February 13 and will be heard at the Tailevu Magistrates Court in Korovou.

The Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, reminded the military of the need to protect it. We need to protect the military, to protect the people, he said. He said news had been around that past politicians wanted the nation to go back to where it was before the 2000 take over. We should be very careful because some have started to think of taking us back to where we took Fiji out of. We have known the hardships, and we know what is to be done in our country because of the hardships we have gone through. Commodore Bainimarama said when he was in Labasa there were talks concerning the Great Council of Chiefs but the military would not allow talk of

The GCC is non-negotiable in the Constitution which states that it is to be removed because politics have entered and has brought racism and that is why we need to keep up our guard, he said. The journey needs values which the military needs to protect because I dont want the values to be lost, he said. When we lose the values the military will also fall from where it was. He said that there was also a need to protect families and children because it was vital.. I have said we need to protect our families, our children and our people. Over fishing by Chinese vessels has collapsed Fijis tuna fishing industry, says Fiji Fish Marketing chief executive Grahame Southwick. Speaking to Fishing website Undercurrent News, Southwick who also heads the Fiji Tuna Boat Owners Association said the domestic boats have been catching less than 50 per cent of their break even for the last four-five years. And this has forced Fiji-based companies, including New Zealand's Solander Ltd and Fiji Fish Marketing Group who provide much of the fresh albacore and yellow fin sold in New Zealand to close their local operations while a third company is also on the verge of closing. The catch rate in the Fiji zone has dropped from 200 albacore a day fivesix years ago, steadily declined to 80, 50 and today averages 15-20 a day per boat." Only five of the 35 boats owned by association members are still fishing. Southwick said the situation was because of the "hundreds of state-
subsidised foreign vessels which have surrounded Fiji". The collapse comes after warnings last year over the way China has sent sophisticated and highly subsidised fishing boats to the South Pacific in a bid to kill off domestic fleets and seize control of the longline tuna fishery. Forum Fisheries Agency figures show that last year there had been a 125 per cent jump in the size of China's South Pacific tuna fleet, with many of them just built. New boats were built virtually for free, and Chinese boats received an additional subsidy if they sent their catch to China for processing. Southwick said the Fiji industry could not compete with heavily subsidised Chinese vessels. The Chinese boats enjoy duty-free access to China, while Fijian companies need to pay a 23 per cent import duty. "They are not subject to the stringent surveys and manning regulations of Fiji vessels, nor to the taxes and levies and foreign exchange regulations imposed on Fiji vessels," Southwick added.
More than 100 top and senior level civil servants have undergone leadership training in one of Chinas top institutions to elevate their performance and meet the growing demand of a developing state. And the civil servants met with the Vice Minister of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC),Yu Hongjun, who is leading a friendship delegation on a three day visit to Fiji. Minister for Primary Industries, Inia Seruiratu, who had attended one of these trainings on the theme innovation in government structure and public administration in developing countries, said he was impressed with how everyone sang the same song and were on the same page in China. Hongjun said China will render whatever assistance Fiji needs to develop its economy, to improve the living standards of the people and to to help you help yourself. He told the civil servants who participated in Chinese Government
funded training at the China Executive Leadership Academy in Pudong, Shanghai that they were also making a contribution towards mutual understanding between the two nations. I hope that in the future you continue to make this contribution in whatever capacities you serve, he said. PSC permanent secretary Parmesh Chand said the Fijian government continues to receive the largest number of short term donor funded training offers from the China and there were 109 officers from various government departments, statutory bodies and nongovernment organisations who had received various types of training in China and this includes six officers who were still pursuing long term studies. Over the course of next two years, the PSC is looking at sending another 250 senior officials for training in China particularly in the field of leadership and to learn firsthand the skills of strategic thinking, planning and coordination, project implementation and effective public service delivery.

Students in Fiji's primary schools will now have access to learning Vosa VakaViti (iTaukei language) and Hindi as they have become compulsory subjects in schools. Minister for Education Filipe Bole said as of this year, 2014, all primary schools are to teach Vosa VakaViti, Hindi and have the conversational programme and it is compulsory for all students from Year One to Year Eight to take the vernacular subjects. It is vital that students understand and speak their own languages well. As Fijians, we must appreciate
who we are and understanding the vernacular languages is important for us as individuals and as citizens of the country," said Bole. The resources for the teaching of the vernaculars have been prepared by the Curriculum Development Unit of the Ministry of Education. The direction from the Education Minister fulfils Section 31 (3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji which states that Conversational and contemporary iTaukei and Fiji Hindi languages be taught as compulsory subjects in all primary schools.

A WOMEN'S group will start training programs to develop the necessary skills in women to enhance their participation in politics. In a statement, the Fiji Women's Forum said the low visibility of women politicians and low number of women parliamentarians in Fiji was a challenge it hoped to change. The forum said it would do this through a series of Women in Politics (WIP) training programs, which it says is more than just for prospective candidates. "It is about supporting the development of the necessary skills to enhance women's participation in the democratisation process ahead of us in Fiji," said Soqosoqo Vakamarama iTaukei general secretary Adi Finau Tabakaucoro. The iTaukei women's group is part of the forum, which is calling for applications from across the political spectrum for its WIP training programs. "Participants should have a working knowledge of women human rights, national gender policies and development. Because the training is more about the numbers, it is about making structural changes and dismantling the barriers which women continue to face," said the forum. The forum will hold four training programs, including a mock parliament

session, to assist women get more involved in the different levels of political decision-making. Participants will include aspiring candidates, campaign managers and decision-makers in political parties. Adi Finau said: "Participation would also mean you were contributing to the development of a Women in Politics training manual grounded in the values and principles of the Women's Forum which included advancing gender equality in Fiji towards the general elections in 2014. "These training programs are designed to address the under-representation of women in various levels of political processes including in parliament." The forum anticipates that the 30 participants selected for training would also be able to give attention to key priorities as well as peace and security. "We are also encouraging young women, women with disabilities, women living with HIV, lesbian, bisexual and transgender women, and women from ethnic minorities and other marginalised grounds," said Adi Finau. The training program was developed in response to the series of national Women's Forum meetings in 2012 and 2013, and after a consultation in November last year.

Villagers in Denimanu on Yadua Island commended government for the construction of 19 new homes that were destroyed during Hurricane Evan in 2012. Launched by the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, the Yadua Rehabilitation and Relocation Project is part of the 676 communities identified by government that is threatened by the loss of coastal land and infrastructure due to erosion or flooding and the threat of storm surges. Turaga ni Koro Meli Rokobili said that the village of Denimanu was grateful to government for the assistance. For the more than 100 villagers here in Denimanu, today is quite an emotional day for us as our pleas of assistance in the past few years have now become reality and we are happy that we did not have to pay anything for this project, Mr Rokobili said. Todays launch indicates that this government cares for us and is committed to improving the ordinary lives of Fijians
living in the rural areas also. The Turaga ni Koro added that previously, villagers in Denimanu were subject to leaking roofs every time it rained as some of them lived in simple and traditional bures which did not survive natural disasters. Similar sentiments were shared by Miliakere Bete. It is a happy day for us to be able to share and be part of governments development plan in rural areas, Ms Bete said. We are pleased that we now have good homes and will not have to worry about our lives and the lives of our families during a cyclone. Various requests by the villagers of Denimanu such as the installation of solar systems, water tanks and the construction of teachers quarters were also approved by the head of government. Denimanu village will also be the first village in Fiji to be installed with 40 solar systems that will include inverters in the installation package.

Mr Bole said school managements should create a learning environment that was conducive to learning for
children. "All classrooms should be ready and compounds neatly kept for a successful outing in 2014. "All grants have been paid out to all the eligible schools to ensure that everything is ready before classes resume. "I wish good luck to one and all as we prepare the journey for another academic year," he said. The Health Ministry and the Education Ministry will be closely monitoring school canteens in their bid to increase wellness. The revised School Canteen Guidelines is based on current knowledge about nutritional health of children as well as the operation of school canteens.

Government, through the Health Ministry, has developed current protocols for patients and relatives of patients applying for financial assistance for overseas medical treatment. The Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma said that after a diagnosis of a patient by the local specialist, patients are referred the Medical Board for consideration of overseas treatment via a formal report. The Medical Board and Health Ministry will determine the level of financial support for the patient and relatives to determine whether they are in a position for partial payment or full payment. Following a comprehensive assessment, the Health Ministry provides medical expenses for travels abroad while the relative of the patient has to make arrangements for air travel, accommodation and miscellaneous expenses generally.
For kidney transplants, the Health Ministry provides air travel costs while the relative or donor arranges funds for the transplant. However patients and relatives need to be aware that a vast range of surgeries are undertaken in Fiji now, said Dr Sharma. This includes Rheumatic Heart Disease Treatment by 2 overseas visiting teams from Australia and New Zealand and an open Cardiac surgery is undertaken by the Sahyadri Hospitals (Fiji) Ltd team based at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH). This includes Angiograms/Angiographic stents and pace makers which are available locally. A range of advanced Orthopedic/ Neurosurgery is now provided at the Lautoka and Suva Hospital respectively. Dr Sharma said The need for overseas referrals has now reduced drastically in 2013 with a few cases being referred to New Zealand and India.

applying for a childs birth certificate, Ms Senimaoli said. Ms Senimoli said that during this Lau tour they will not be charging penalties for late registration of birth certificates. Earlier this week, Government announced an amnesty for people who have not registered their births with the waiver of the standard fee for late registration. A late registration is any registration made more than twelve months after birth. The waiver of the $11.50 fee is in effect and will last until March 14th. The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, urged Fijians to take advantage of this amnesty to register themselves and their children if they have not already done so. It is important that everyone has an identity and a birth certificate is the ultimate proof of identity. Without one, you cannot access many basic services, such as social welfare, education, health care and registering to vote, he said.

The wife of Indian minister Shashi Tharoor, found dead in a luxury hotel after accusing her husband of being unfaithful, appeared to have died of drug overdose, according to local media reports. Mr Tharoor, the junior human resources development minister, found his wife Sunanda Pushkar dead last Friday in a New Delhi hotel after he returned from a Congress party meeting. An autopsy report, which was submitted on Monday to a magistrate charged with investigating her death, cited a drug overdose as the cause of death, as reported. The agency says Magistrate Alok
A magnitude 6.2 earthquake has rattled the lower North Island of New Zealand, reportedly causing rockfalls and and damage to buildings. The quake struck 15 kilometres east of the small town of Ekatahuna, about 120 kilometres north-east of Wellington. No injuries had been reported from the quake, which struck at a depth of 33 kilometres and was felt hundreds of kilometres away. Power and phone lines were brought down in Eketahuna, and groceries fell from the supermarket shelves. There are reports of huge boulders falling from the cliffs near Castlepoint, about 140 kilometres north-east of Wellington. A giant eagle prop hanging from the roof of Wellington Airport to promote The Hobbit movie trilogy also fell. The airport's Greg Thomas told the newspaper the eagle - one of two at
the airport - slowly became detached during the quake and came to rest on the floor. He said it is still partly suspended and added that no-one was injured when it came down. New Zealand is on the boundary of the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates, forming part of the so-called Ring of Fire, and experiences up to 15,000 tremors a year. A devastating magnitude 6.3 tremor in the South Island city of Christchurch in 2011 killed 185 people - one of the nation's deadliest disasters of the modern era. Wellington was the scene of the country's most powerful earthquake in 1855. That magnitude 8.2 quake caused four deaths and changed the city's entire geography, pushing the shoreline out 200 metres as it thrust the harbour floor upwards.
A Christchurch 5-year-old got his hand stuck in an electric beater, in a painful baking mix up involving his older brother. Marshal Forrester was going to bake a cake with his brother Carson and sister Sadie when the accident happened. Marshal was putting the beaters into the machine when his older brother, Carson, turned it on. His hands were pulled through the beater attachments, and stuck. His mother, Kirsty Forrester, turned the machine off and tried to free his hand. "I panicked. I couldn't move it, so I called 111. It looked pretty horrific. I thought it would come out in two pieces," she said. Soon Mrs Forrester found herself surrounded in the kitchen by three firefighters, the paramedics and her mother, who was there to look after the
kids if Marshal needed to go to hospital. Mike Bowden, the Wainoni Fire Station manager, was there. "We got all this flash gear out, then another firefighter and myself actually pulled the beaters apart and freed his hand manually," he said. Anthony Earl was the other firefighter who helped in the rescue of the boy's hand. "The mother had three wee kiddies there, she was very distressed to see her boy in pain. It definitely wasn't her fault. The wee boy was very stoic, he didn't cry," said Mr Bowden. Once Marshal's hand was free he was checked out by the paramedics and his GP. "They were happy that his hand was okay," said Mrs Forrester. "He [Marshal] was pretty upset, he's usually quite chatty but I think he's in shock."

A five-time drink-driver who ploughed into a family of three on a busy Auckland road has been jailed for more than two years. Lakhwinder Singh, 31, was sentenced in the Manukau District Court after previously pleading guilty to three charges of drink-driving and three of dangerous driving causing injury. On October 7, the Papatoetoe man was seen driving erratically through South Auckland, with numerous vehicles swerving out of his way as he repeatedly crossed the centre-line. Police were called, but did not reach Singh before a head-on collision in Karaka Rd, near Drury. It was 9.10am and he was more than three times over the drink-drive limit. Katherine Brak was giving her teenage son, Alexander, a driving lesson, while her other boy, Matthew, sat in the back. "He crossed the double yellow lines and just came right for us," she said. Brak suffered a broken vertebrae and extensive bruising, which kept her in hospital for nearly a week. But it was her sons she was more worried about. Alexander had cuts to his arm and she turned around to see her youngest son, Matthew, unconscious. "For me that was the worst," Brak said. "We didn't know whether he was alive or not. His eyes were half open and he had blood dripping down his face." The force of the smash knocked him out but he suffered no serious head
A Christian pastor from New Zealand accused of importing more than nine kilos of methamphetamine and heroin into Australia must have known the drugs were in her bags, a Darwin court has heard. When she was arrested in May last year, Bernadine Prince had business cards proclaiming her a pastor with a Christian organisation called Oasis of Grace, the objective of which was to "evangelise, encourage and better all nations'', Crown prosecutor Glen Rice told a Supreme Court jury. Prince is charged with importing a commercial quantity of a bordercontrolled substance. The organisation had been involved in fundraisers and charitable works in the past, and had bases in Kenya, Fiji and Cambodia, Mr Rice said in his opening statement. Prince was returning to Australia from a five-week trip to Kenya and Cambodia in April and May last year when her suitcases were delayed in Singapore. When they arrived in Darwin, a customs officer detected traces of drugs on seven vinyl backpacks in her suitcases that were unusually heavy, and upon inspection discovered packages sewn
injury. Police were soon at the scene to breathalyse Singh, who blew a reading of 1405 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. The legal limit is 400. What angered Brak most was that the drink-driver was on bail for two previous offences at the time. Singh's spiralling offending began five months earlier when he was found drunk in a stationary vehicle with the engine on. A month later, he was driving at speed up and down a shared driveway where his ex-wife lived in Manurewa. Police arrived as he was wheel spinning along the drive while blasting loud music from his stereo. "He had difficulty speaking or standing," Judge Edwin Paul said. Despite a recommendation of home detention by the Probation Service, the judge ruled a sentence of imprisonment was the only appropriate outcome especially since Singh had two previous drink-driving convictions from 2008 and 2012. A note to the victims also did little to impress Judge Paul. "Although you've written a letter of apology it's too late, Mr Singh. Any remorse would've been demonstrated if after the first two charges you'd disciplined yourself not to get behind the wheel." Singh was jailed for two years and one month and indefinitely disqualified from driving.
into each one containing crystal methamphetamine and heroin with a combined weight of more than nine kilos, Mr Rice said. The drugs have a street value of up to A$2 million. Prince said the bags had been given to her by a Kenyan woman known only as "Mummy Rose'' who suggested that she sell some handbags made by African women to her congregation in Australia to raise funds, and she and her son helped Prince pack them into her suitcases. Mr Rice said this was implausible. "The bags were commercially produced bags that might be made anywhere; in fact, they were tagged as having been made in China,'' he said. Additionally, the cardboard used to pack the drugs was Cambodian, meaning the backpacks were not obtained in Kenya at all, he said, or else were packed with drugs during the four days Prince spent in Cambodia on her return trip. During the trial a drug expert would testify that the heroin in the bags had a South-East Asian chemical profile, Mr Rice said. The trial continues.

Outspoken real estate magnate Donald Trump said on Tuesday he may seek the Republican presidential nomination for 2016, adding that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's prospects for a White House run have dimmed since a scandal erupted. A run for the presidency "is something I would certainly look at," Trump told Reuters. "You know why? I'm unhappy with the way things are going in America." Trump gave the telephone interview before making a breakfast speech at the "Politics & Eggs" forum at St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire - an event that tends to feature presidential hopefuls. Trump did not directly address the idea of a running for office during the speech. New Hampshire traditionally holds the nation's first presidential nominating primaries and is a regular stop for White House aspirants. He told Reuters he was interested in the idea of personally undoing the legacy of President Barack Obama, who he said had made a "big mistake" with the Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare, and had done too little to shore up the American economy. In his speech, Trump said that Christie - widely seen as a potential Republican presidential candidate in 2016 - was "one email away from disaster" after revelations that four days of massive traffic jams on the George Washington Bridge were caused by an act of apparent political payback. "The thing is he's fired ... people. I don't know what they are going to say, or what emails they are going to produce. It's a tough situation for him," Trump
said. "I would have thought Chris would do well (as a candidate). He still could do well, but now it's going to be tougher." Trump - who made a fortune building skyscrapers and running casinos and now hosts U.S. reality TV show "The Apprentice" - had also toyed with the idea of running for the 2012 Republican nomination but pulled out months before the primary, saying he was not ready to leave the private sector. He has long been a vocal critic of Obama and made waves after demanding proof the president was born in the United States. The White House released Obama's birth certificate in 2011 showing he was born in Hawaii. Trump said he believed Obama's handling of the launch of healthcare reform - the president's signature domestic policy achievement which has been fraught with early glitches - would help Republicans during this year's midterm elections. "It is going to be a tremendous factor going into November and it is going to have a devastating impact on the Democrats," Trump said. He said he also believes Obama has not done enough to keep the United States competitive in the global economy, and faulted him for his handling of Iraq, Aghanistan, and Syria. "We used to be the smart ones on the block, now we're the dummies," Trump said. Trump has also hinted he could run for governor of New York in 2014, claiming he has a $200 million war chest available for a campaign if he chooses to challenge Democratic incumbent Andrew Cuomo.

Two Alberta men accused of bilking 1,314 Canadian investors out of more than $23 million have been charged with fraud and theft. RCMP allege the men behind a Calgary company called Concrete Equities Inc. promised investors huge returns if they purchased a stake in undeveloped beach property in Mexico called the Golfo de Santa Clara project. The investors included people from Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Ontario. "People invested as a limited partner to these investments and they were all putting in between $10,000 and $100,000. And these investments were RSP eligible," RCMP Sgt. Conal Archer said Wednesday. "They put their money in and were hoping they were going to get upwards of 500 per cent returns -- what these fellows were telling them." The RCMP's financial integrity unit alleges the men diverted money to other businesses and stole investors' money from 2007 until Concrete Equities crumbled into receivership in 2009. Dave Humeniuk of St. Albert faces charges of fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000 and money laundering, and is to appear in court Feb. 27. A Canada-wide arrest warrant has been issued for Varun Aurora, of Calgary,
who faces fraud and theft charges. Police believe he may be out of the country. In January 2012, both men were fined and disciplined by the Alberta Securities Commission over the sale of limited partnership securities worth $110 million. The cases involved the Mexico project and other business deals involving
Concrete Equities and Calgary office and retail buildings. The commission ordered both men to stop trading or selling securities. Humeniuk was also permanently banned from being an officer or a director of any financial security company and ordered to pay an administrative penalty of $3.3 million -- the largest fine ever levied by the
commission on an individual. Aurora was banned from being an officer or a director of any financial security company until 2021 and ordered to pay an administrative penalty of $500,000. Media reports say both men declared personal bankruptcy in 2009. "Much harm resulted from all of this misconduct," reads the commission's Jan. 9. 2012 ruling. "Prospective investors were given misleading information and denied the prospectus disclosure and registrant involvement to which they were entitled to by law." Archer said the charges laid by RCMP pertain strictly to the Mexico beach property investment. He said police began the probe after receiving a complaint in 2009 from an investor. A whole team of officers was assigned to the investigation last year. With fraud prevention month set to begin in March, Archer has a tip for people who are considering where to invest their money. "I would say to people just to do their due diligence and be very careful that they do a lot of research into the corporations that they might be investing into," he said. "My recommendation would be not to invest in any company that has no assets."

People are concerned about Canada Post's plan to end door-to-door mail delivery by 2019 People upset over Canada Post's decision to end door-to-door mail delivery in favour of community mailbox delivery voiced their concerns at a forum Tuesday night in Surrey, B.C. Canada Post announced it was phasing out urban home delivery of regular mail in December in an effort to reduce $1 billion in financial losses expected by 2020. Many of the five million Canadian residents who currently receive doorto-door delivery have expressed concern over the change particular in relation to accessibility and mail security. Tuesday's forum, which was organized by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, was an opportunity for people to have those concerns heard. "One of my main concerns is the security of the postal boxes and there's going to be huge ugly boxes on people's property," said Surrey resident Heather Laidlaw. Documents received by CBC News through a Freedom of Information Act request revealed there were nearly 5,000 incidents of community mailbox tampering in B.C. between 2008 and 2013. RCMP throughout the province have issued public warnings advising people to pick up their mail promptly and to report any suspicious behaviour and community mailbox thefts in their communities. The City of Vancouver has initiated a study that will examine the impacts of losing urban mail delivery on residents, and some politicians are speaking out against Canada Post's decision. "I am concerned about our seniors. I am concerned about those with disabilities. But I am also concerned that we are going to be the only country in the G8 who are not going to have any form of door-to-door delivery of their mail and I don't understand still why we are doing this," said NDP opposition critic for employment and social development Jinny Sims, who attended Tuesday's meeting. The Union of Postal Workers is hoping these concerns will be loud enough for the postal service to reinstate door-todoor delivery. "I think we lose part of our whole institution, what it is to be Canadian," said union worker Coleen Jones. "We are trying to work and we are trying to put forward some really viable solutions on how we can keep Canada Post profitable." No one from Canada Post attended Tuesday's meeting. The phasing-out of door-to-door mail delivery is expected to be completed by 2019.
A major snow storm hammered Atlantic Canada with heavy snow and high winds Wednesday, cancelling flights, closing schools and government offices, and making driving treacherous for motorists across the region. The storm began with a light snowfall that dusted much of Nova Scotia overnight Tuesday, bringing between three and five centimetres of snow. A stronger blast of snow followed, dumping 15 to 25 centimetres in southeastern New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island late Wednesday. Environment Canada officials said gusts in parts of Nova Scotia reached over 82 kilometres per hour during the evening. "It turned out to be fairly severe," meteorologist Doug Mercer told The Canadian Press. "We're getting visibility that is fairly low." The storm delayed or cancelled flights at airports in Halifax, Fredericton,
Moncton, N.B., and Charlottetown. The snow is relatively light because the temperature is double digits below zero, which is a good thing in the sense that the snow is relatively dry and easy to move around, airport spokesperson Peter Spurway told CTV Wednesday morning. The downside is it does blow around fairly easily. Marine Atlantic cancelled ferry service between Port aux Basques, Nfld., and Sydney, N.S., as high winds created rough water. Both Dalhousie University and St. Marys University closed for the day, as did all Access Nova Scotia, motor registry and land registration offices. In addition to the snow and high winds, temperatures plummeted across the region. With the wind chill, the temperature felt like -19 C in Halifax, while in Fredericton it felt like -26 C.
Toronto Braces For Up To 15 cm Snow As Huge Winter Storm Cancels Thousands Of Flights Across U.S. And Maritimes
Canadas largest city is bracing for its own snowstorm after an intense blizzard grounded flights and shuttered schools across the Maritimes and the U.S. Environment Canada warned Wednesday evening that drivers in Toronto should expect a slow, slippery commute Thursday as the storm dumps up to 15 cm of snow on the city. With the wind chill, temperatures will get down to -25 C, which could add to problems by creating delays across the citys aging transit system. If the snow band remains stationary for a long period of time, then 15 cm of snow will be possible, Environment Canada said in a statement. A snow squall warning could be issued. Environment Canada says there were two distinct phases to the storm that slammed parts of Atlantic Canada Wednesday, closing schools and government offices as well as disrupting travel throughout the region. Halifax Stanfield International Airport cancelled about half of their flights Wednesday. The first brought between three and five centimetres of snow on Tuesday night through Wednesday morning in western Nova Scotia and the Halifax area. A second, more powerful blow hit later, dumping heavier snowfall amounts that were expected to range from 15 to 30 centimetres in Nova Scotia and 15 to 25 centimetres in southeastern New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Wind gusts crept close to 70 kilometres per hour in Charlottetown. Environment Canada put the entire provinces of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island under a blizzard, winter storm or blowing snow warning, as well as southeastern New Brunswick. At least three universities and all community college campuses cancelled classes for the day in Nova Scotia. Schools also closed in Prince Edward Island and there were flight cancellations at the Charlottetown airport, the Moncton airport, the Saint John airport, and the St. Johns airport.

Roberto Luongo won't have any family joining him next month when he suits up for Canada at the Winter Olympics. The same goes for Sweden's Daniel Sedin. The Vancouver Canucks teammates are both concerned over security at the Games in Sochi, Russia, after a series of threats and terrorist attacks in the region. Two suicide bombers killed 34 people in the southern Russian city of Volgograd in December, and officials say they are hunting three more potential attackers -- including one believed to be in Sochi. "It's definitely on my mind, I'm not going to lie," Luongo said after practice on Wednesday. "I think we're all a little bit concerned. We're definitely going to keep an eye on it over the next few weeks." Sedin, who is set to compete for Sweden along with his twin brother Henrik, said he was "absolutely" concerned about the news coming out of Russia, including email threats on Wednesday against a handful of European countries set to participate at the Olympics. The threats were largely dismissed as a hoax, but the concern over security in Sochi is serious. "We talk about it quite a bit. It's nothing you can really joke about," said Sedin. "It's in the back of your head for sure." Luongo, the odds on favourite to start for Canada in its first game Feb. 13 against Norway, and Sedin both said safety is the main reason their families won't be travelling to Russia. Sedin added that if family members wanted to join him and his brother, he would discourage them from making
the trip. An Islamic militant group in Dagestan -- which is located about 500 kilometres from Sochi -- claimed responsibility for the bombings in Volgograd in a video posted on Sunday. The video also contained a threat to strike the Olympics. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby voiced similar concerns to those of Luongo and Sedin to reporters in Pittsburgh on Sunday. "Obviously everybody watches the news and knows that there's been things happening fairly close to there," said Crosby, who will captain the Canadian team. "From what we've been told, I think they're going to do everything they can to make sure it's safe and secure. We're going over to play and focus on that. "It's not something everyone's totally worried about, but I think it's hard
not to think about it when things are happening kind of close to there." Toronto Maple Leafs forward James van Riemsdyk, who will suit up for the United States in Sochi, said back in December that American hockey officials told him that security will be "very tight." "I know they mentioned things about different actions they were going to take as far as making sure everything's secure," he said. "It seemed like they were on top of all that." Minnesota Wild defenceman Ryan Suter, who will also play for the Americans, said after practice Wednesday that his wife and two young children won't be travelling to Russia. The long trip is part of the reason, but Suter said recent news about terrorist threats made the decision "a little bit easier." Another American Olympian, Suter's
friend and Wild teammate Zach Parise, also advised his parents and relatives not to come. He said the situation is "nerve wracking, that's for sure." Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane's parents travelled to Vancouver in 2010 to cheer for him and Team USA. He said Wednesday his mother, a sister and his girlfriend are planning to come to Russia, despite the safety concerns. "They understand what's going on," Kane said. "It's their choice to go over there, and they wanted to. I'll take the support for sure." Kane said he's not worried about security in Sochi. "You hear different things about it, so obviously you're going to think about it," he said. "But at the end of the day, what can we really do about it? It's not our job to worry about that stuff. If something happens, it's completely out of our control. If you're worrying about that, then your head's in the wrong place. I think we have to be worried about going over going there and playing well as a country and a team and enjoying your time over there, too." The same goes for Kane's teammate, Jonathan Toews, a member of Team Canada. Toews said his parents and girlfriend will be in Sochi, despite "that thought in their head" about the danger. "Everyone is doing everything they can to make sure there are no dangerous situations. I think our families will be pretty close to where we are in the village so that'll be a little comfort," Toews said. "We just have to enjoy it and be confident everything will be all right."

Finance
What happens if your payment is late? Be wary of introductory interest rates. Be fully aware of what the interest rate and fees will increase to after the introductory period, and what any balance you carry over from the introductory period will be charged at. Note: Department store or retail credit cards tend to charge more interest than bank credit cards and are limited in where they can be used. While retail credit cards do offer rewards and some discounts, careful research needs to be done to make sure this type of card is of value to you. Warning: applying for a retail credit card in order to take advantage of a discount for applying can have a negative impact on your credit rating (even if the card is never used). Q: How can we Eliminate Our Credit Card Debt Tahir Malik: No matter how deep in Credit Card Debt you are there is a way out.By adopting following steps you can gain control of your financial life. Credit Card Debt - Pay-Down Plan Step 1 - Stop Using Your Credit Cards Now! This is the most important of all the steps. Put your credit cards away and start using budgeted cash instead. Step 2 - Know the Facts Write down exactly what you owe in Credit Card Debt find out from your credit card companies what your current interest rates are, and what the minimum monthly payment is for each card. While you are speaking with your credit card companies check to see if they are willing to lower the interest rate they are currently charging you. Step 3 - Plan Your Attack Sort your Credit Card Debt by card
from highest to lowest interest rate. Where possible, move balances from higher percentage cards to lower percentage cards. Plan to pay off your Credit Cards by applying all the money your budget allows to the card with the highest interest rate. When that card is paid off then pay off the card with the next lowest rate and so on. It is very important that you continue to make the required minimum monthly payments on all your other outstanding cards throughout this pay-down plan. Depending on your requirements choose two credit cards to keep for future emergency only use. Most people at this point decide to drop the high-interest department store cards and keep major bank cards. Once you have paid off those credit cards that you do not plan on keeping cancel them in writing. Step 4 - Do It - Now! Just Do It Now. No excuses. No putting off. The sooner you start the sooner you will be debt free. Step 5 - Keep Doing It! Live within your budget cut your expenses & stick with it! Discover how powerful you are by controlling your expenses and building for your future and peace of mind. Serious Credit Problems? Continued From Last Week How Parents Can Help If you discover that your child is being cyberbullied, talk to him or her about any experiences you have had in your childhood. This can help your child feel less alone. Let your child know that it's not his or her fault, and that bullying says more about the bully than the victim. Talking to teachers or school administrators also may help, but take cues from your child. Many schools, school districts, and after-school clubs have established protocols for responding to cyberbullying; these vary by district and state. But before reporting the problem, let your child know that you plan to do so, as he or she could have concerns about "tattling" and might prefer that the problem be handled privately. Other measures to try: Block the bully. Most devices have settings that allow you to electronically block emails, IMs, or text messages from specific people. Limit access to technology. Although it's hurtful, many kids who are bullied can't resist the temptation to check websites or phones to see if there are new messages. Keep the computer in a public place in the house (no laptops in children's bedrooms, for example) and limit the use of cell phones and games. Some companies allow you to turn off text messaging services during certain hours. And, most websites and phones provide the option for parental controls, which provide parents with access to their childrens messages and online life. Know your kids' online world. Check their postings and the sites kids visit, and be aware of how they spend their time online. Talk to them about the importance of privacy and why it's a bad idea to share personal information online, even with friends. Encourage them to safeguard passwords. Write up cell phone and social media
contracts that you are willing to enforce. Look to the web for resource and support information about cyberbullying. If your son or daughter agrees, you may also arrange for mediation with a therapist or counselor at school who can work with your child and/or the bully. When Your Child Is the Bully Finding out that your kid is the one who is behaving inappropriately can be upsetting and heartbreaking. It's important to address the problem head on and not wait for it to go away. Talk to your child firmly about his or her actions and explain the negative impact it has on others. Joking and teasing might seem OK, but it can hurt people's feelings and lead to getting in trouble. Bullying in any form is unacceptable; there can be serious (and sometimes irrevocable) consequences at home, school, and in the community if it continues. Remind your child that the use of cell phones and computers is a privilege. Sometimes it helps to restrict the use of these devices until behavior improves. If you feel your child should have a cell phone for safety reasons, make sure it is a phone that can only be used for emergency purposes. Insist on strict parental controls on all devices if there is any history of your child making impulsive decisions when they are online. To get to the heart of the matter, sometimes talking to teachers, guidance counselors, and other school officials can help identify situations that lead a kid to bully others. If your child has trouble managing anger, talk to a therapist about helping your son or daughter learn to cope with anger, hurt, frustration, and other strong emotions in a healthy way. Professional counseling often helps kids learn to deal with their feelings and improve their confidence and social skills, which in turn can reduce the risk of bullying. If you're techsavvy yourself, model good online habits to help your kids understand the benefits and the dangers of life in the digital world.

The symptoms are described below. What are the symptoms associated with gallbladder pain? Gallbladder pain may vary; many people with gallstones never experience pain. However, there are some variations in gallbladder pain that help the doctor to make a diagnosis. Biliary colic (intermittent duct blockage): Sudden and rapidly increasing pain (ache or pressure) in the right upper abdomen or epigastric area; some people will have pain radiating to the right shoulder and/ or also develop nausea and vomiting. The pain usually subsides in about 1 to 5 hours although a mild ache may persist for about a day. Cholecystitis (inflammation of gallbladder tissue secondary to duct blockage): severe steady pain in the right upper abdomen that may radiate to the right shoulder or back, abdominal tenderness when touched or pressed, sweating, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, and bloating; discomfort lasts longer than with biliary colic. Acalculous cholecystitis (no gallstones) has similar symptoms to cholecystitis but occurs as a complication of other problems like
trauma or burns; patients have severe symptoms and appear very ill. Pancreatitis: Gallstones from the gallbladder can block the pancreatic duct and cause pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) with upper abdominal pain that may radiate to the back, tender abdomen, more pain after eating, with nausea and vomiting. Ascending cholangitis (or simply cholangitis or infection of the biliary system) causes fever, abdominal pain, jaundice and even hypotension (low blood pressure), and confusion; it is a medical emergency. How is the cause of gallbladder pain diagnosed? The history and physical exam helps to establish a presumptive diagnosis. Murphy's sign (pain or temporary respiratory arrest on deep right subcostal palpation) has been estimated to be over 95% specific for acute cholecystitis. A few laboratory tests such as liver function tests, lipase, amylase, complete blood count (CBC), and an abdominal X-ray are done to determine the exact problem is causing the pain. Ultrasound can detect gallstones, and CT scan may delineate organ structural changes. A HIDA scan

There are some people who think marriage to a Canadian citizen will be their ticket to Canada. It is a crime for foreign nationals to marry Canadian citizens or permanent residents only to gain entry into Canada. Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) is working to prevent these fraudulent marriages. In many cases, sponsors and foreign applicants arrange a marriage of convenience: a marriage or commonlaw relationship where the sole purpose is for the sponsored spouse to immigrate to Canada. CIC officers are specially trained to recognize genuine immigration applications, and they know how to detect marriages of convenience. They use several methods to uncover marriage fraud, including document checks, site visits and interviews with sponsors and applicants. Canadian citizens or permanent residents found to be part of a marriage of convenience for immigration purposes may be charged with a crime. New regulations Effective October 25, 2012, sponsored spouses or partners must now live together in a legitimate relationship with their sponsor for two years from the day they receive permanent residence status in Canada. If you are a spouse or partner being sponsored to come to Canada, this applies to you if: You are being sponsored by a permanent resident or Canadian citizen You have been in a relationship for two years or less with your sponsor You have no children in common Your application was received on or after October 25, 2012 Dont become a victim of marriage fraud If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and you meet someone from another country on the Internet or while travelling, you should take care if you are considering marrying them and sponsoring them to Canada. Sponsors must financially support their spouse for three years, even if the marriage or relationship fails. If your spouse uses social assistance, you will have to repay the money, and you wont be able to sponsor anyone else until the debt is repaid. Sponsorship is a legally binding financial commitment with the Government of Canada. Sponsors: Do not be tempted by offers of money or other rewards to enter into a marriage of convenience just so the person can immigrate to Canada. If you do this, you can face serious criminal charges, and you will still have to meet the terms of the sponsorship. Do not feel you are obligated to help somebody by being part of a marriage of convenience, no matter what the reason. It is not worth the risks. Visa applicants: Dont get involved in a marriage of convenience. You will be refused a visa and may be banned from travel to Canada for two years. This will remain permanently on your CIC record. CIC recognizes that even genuine marriages can fail. However, if you enter into a marriage of convenience and come to Canada as an immigrant, enforcement action can be taken against you. This enforcement action could end with your being deported by the Canada Border Services Agency.

Manoj Kumar: I Played The Common Man And His Rise Through Politics Years Before Arvind Kejriwal Came
The veteran actor talks about the new political revolution that is going to take place in India
defeats the ex-king in elections. My character was a man working in a factory, Kumar said. The actor, real name Harikrishna Giri Goswami, made his debut with Fashion in 1957 but found success with 1962 movie Hariyali Aur Raasta. In a career spanning more than four decades, Kumar starred in and directed hits like Upkaar, Purab Aur Paschim, Shor, 10 Numberi and Kranti. Kumar credits his stardom to people but the actor is not very happy with the films that are being made today. The race here is which picture is selected for the Oscar though no picture has won anything there. To make our cinema international, we first need to make national movies. I find there is no emphasis on story or emotions now. We used to guarantee at least one week to our producer and distributor. Today, the stars are charging crores but they cant guarantee even three days or the opening day houseful even though some of them are brilliant actors. Manoj Kumar, who played powerful roles as the quintessential common man, says the Aam Aadmi government has to fulfill its promises as the youth have a lot of expectation from them. The 76-year-old actor says he is happy to see an awakening in people, especially the youth. The youth today are very aware and the public anger is simmering. I believe Arvind Kejriwal and his party is the first wave of Tsunami. For now, we dont know what is behind it, whether the current is strong. He has taken a step and now he has to fulfill the promises he made. Kejriwal is like a new shirt, he is yet to go through the wash, Kumar said in a recent interview. Kumar says he has already portrayed the things that are happening in politics today in his films Yaadgaar and Upkaar. I played the common man and his rise through politics in my film Yaadgar years before Kejriwal came. He is 47 years behind me. In the film, I played a man who revolts and unmasks black marketers, bad doctors and even

Eros International and Sohail Khan Productions. Jai Ho is about a strictly honourable man who is fighting lonely against corruption and injustice prevailing in the society. This man has a fundamental principle that help as many people as he can. Help somebody and then request that person to help others, thus forming an ever growing circle of people helping each other. In a strange twist of fate, Jai (Salman Khan) who is an ex army officer finds himself standing against a powerful politician and his nasty family. But, he will not shy away from a battle, however bloody it may get. He firmly believes that you do not have to wear a uniform to serve your country. Geeta (Tabu), Jai's sister, realises the horrific consequences Jai and the rest of their family. Hence, she forcefully convinced Jai to make peace with the politician. But when this leads to humiliation being heaped on him, Jai loses his cool and declares all out war. It is an unequal war - one side stand the politician with his numerous henchmen and on another side is Jai - alone. But unknown to him, a silent revolution is taking place. The voiceless public, he has helped in the past, is gathering force. It finally has a voice and this voice cannot - will not be silenced. Jai Ho is the resounding sound of victory. Hence, Jai Ho is the warrior cry of someone determined to win at all cost.

Plucking is the best way to shape your eyebrows, although some women prefer waxing. But be warned: this is best done by a professional unless you want to wax off half an eyebrow. Eyebrow plucking is an art. There is skill, patience and creativity involved. Youll need good vision, the perfect tools and a sense of symmetry. For starters, look at your eyebrows in a mirror. Step back at least three feet so that you have a full, clear perspective of what your facial features. Pluck your eyebrows when your pores are open. This is either after a shower or after you have applied a hot face cloth to your skin for a few minutes. Perfect eyebrows almost transcend the beauty of the face and make an immediate visible impact in a makeover session. The best time to pluck your eyebrows is after you get out of the shower. The pores are still open and it doesnt sting quite as much. Stopping to access your plucking progress will help measure your results and prevent over-plucking. Eyebrow plucking should ideally be timed just before hitting the sack as the sleep time that follows allows any subsequent redness to disappear overnight. Slant edge tweezers, which grip hairs easily, are best for shaping brows while combing hairs one way, then the other, helps remove loose strands. Pluck hairs in the direction that they
grow. Doing so will keep the hairs smooth and will hurt less. Pluck stray hairs underneath the eyebrow arch and anything else outside the natural brow line. Eyebrow plucking tips to help you achieve beautiful eyebrows. After plucking a few hairs, always stop to look at what you have done. You may be over-plucking and you might not even realize it. Tips for eyebrow tweezing / plucking: 1. Do not tweeze too much. 2. The hair can be softened first with a hair conditioner or shaving cream. 3. If your brows are making the slight arc then you have the best brow. 4. Do clean skin. Brush your brows up and out. 5. Use a good pair of tweezers to tweeze your brows. Use magnifying mirror and do the task in perfect bright light. 6. Eyebrows slanting upwards make you look angry, so be careful not to take off too much at the outer corners. 7. If you want both top and bottoms to be smooth as much as you can, you can pluck the top and the bottom. 8. Do not over pluck your brows. Plucking with proper care and in limitations is as important as tweezing or plucking. 9. Once plucking is done, apply some good quality gel to remove redness etc. Applying gel will make your eyes calm and finish irritation due to tweezing or plucking.
Relationships
Continued From Last Week Hear say: "It's important to assure a woman that she will be a good mother and that she has qualities like compassion and endurance being a good parent. This will make her believe in herself and also prepare her for the new role," adds Dr. Sushma. 'Will you spend your life with me?' Most women tend to be ultra sensitive and by saying this you are bound to play music on the chords of her heart. You will also affirm to her that you are not just playing around with her, but are actually looking forward to spending your entire life with her. Tell her how incomplete your life would be without her and that she has now become an indispensable part of your existence. Don't be surprised if you find her smiling for days! Richa Nanda, 25, who works with an advertising agency in Delhi confesses, "I had been dating a guy for the last six months. We work in the same office. Although I like him very much, I was a bit reluctant to commit to him prematurely. He recently asked me whether I would like to get married to him and it was then that I made up my mind. I was convinced that he is genuinely interested in me and would like to take the relationship further." Hear say: "I think this is the most difficult thing to ask a woman. It is a very important question and it means asking her for a long-term commitment. So, it is important to be sure before you speak your mind," adds Archana. 'What do you think about .............?' Ask for her opinion - whether it is about buying a new car or simply about what you should wear to office. By doing this, you are not just asserting that her opinion is important to you, but also that you respect her views. And if you are still in doubt, just remember that women love to express their views on whatever it may be - so let her speak for longer than you may want to hear and let her be the diva who knows it all! Kanika Shrivastava, 28, who works with a telecom company in Delhi agrees, "I feel really special when my boyfriend asks for my opinion. It boosts my ego. He consults me before taking any major decisions - whether it is regarding his career or investments. I appreciate the fact that he values me not just for my looks but also my brains." Hear say: "It's important for a woman
to believe that she is an important part of the decision making process. Asking her for advice - no matter how big or small the decision - makes her feel special and respected," adds Dr. Sushma. 'You are my dearest pal' Want to assure her that you are the kind of man who's not just with her for her glam looks and her hourglass figure? Well, then all you need to do is to tell her that she is not just the love of your life, but also your dearest friend. Try to establish a connection beyond your sexual interest in her. This is sure to give her ego the much required boost and score you brownie points. Namita Goswami, 21, a college student says, "The best thing that my boyfriend has ever told me is that he considers me his best friend. Although he has many gal pals, but when it comes to sharing anything special, I am the one he comes to. It is great to find your best friend in your partner." Hear say: Manmeet Bhalla, a marriage and relationship counselor opines, "Being a woman's friend is the first step to winning her over. It is important for a woman to believe that she means much more to you than just being your wife or your girlfriend. What she needs to feel is that you count on her - when you are in a problem or a dilemma, when you need advice, when you need a shoulder to cry on." 'I am lucky to have you' Tell her that she is the only one for you. If not her, you would probably have still been single. Women love to be with men who are amiable and there is no better way to tell her that you are a true gentleman than to thank her for being the person that she is. Tell her that your life is beautiful only because she is a part of it. Don't be surprised if you find her blushing. Amit Malhotra, 24, a sales executive says, "A year ago, I just told my girlfriend how special she is to me and how lucky I feel to have her in my life and she was thrilled to hear that. Since then I have realised how important it is to be expressive with women." Hear say: "Telling a woman that she is your lucky charm is a sure shot way to pamper her. It makes her feel that you have not just accepted her in your life but you are also grateful to her for her presence. It is the most gratifying thought for a woman," adds Manmeet. Continued Next Week

SUPER foods, fried foods and trans fats, what you are and aren't meant to eat is harder to keep track of than getting a daily workout.
Here are body+soul's top tips for avoiding the five most common diet traps. Are you guilty of these common food mistakes? Fortunately, they're mistakes easily fixed. 1. Eating too light a breakfast While eating breakfast is a good thing nutritionally, the wrong balance of nutrients can leave you prone to overeating later in the day or cause excessive hunger mid-morning. Why does it happen? Popular breakfast cereals and plain toast with spread are quick but carbohydrate-heavy breakfast options. Ideally we need to add protein and use low-GI breads and breakfast cereals for sustained fullness throughout the morning. Solution: Add an egg, baked beans or cheese to your toast in the morning or add some protein powder to your milk to increase the protein content of your breakfast. 2. Not enough vegetables at lunchtime Salads and vegetables are packed with water and dietary fibre, which help to bulk up your diet and keep you full. Why does this happen? Plain sandwiches, sushi and soups tend to be light in protein and vegetables, leaving you looking for something extra after you have finished your lunch. Solution: Always carry a carrot, celery or capsicum with you to snack on with years ago. Solution: Eat your larger meal at lunchtime and stick to soups and salads if you find yourself eating after 8pm. 5. Eating too quickly Long gone are the days when a leisurely meal was enjoyed over an hour or more each evening. Unfortunately, eating fast also appears to lead to overconsumption as it takes time for the body to register it is full. Why does it happen? Too many commitments and overwhelming schedules have meant that eating meals can become just another thing on the to-do list. Solution: Aim to spend at least 20 minutes sitting down to enjoy your meal. Practise putting your knife and fork down in between each mouthful and chewing each mouthful 20 times. Studies have shown you can eat up to 500 kilojoules less per meal simply by slowing down. Food tip You've arrived home late and need a quick, easy meal. Unfortunately, many quick options, including frozen meals, noodles and pasta dishes, are not the best choices. Instead, try to base quick meals around vegetables and lean protein to keep fuel intake lower at night. Good options include a barbecue and salad, potatoes stuffed with tuna, omelets and crumbed fish with frozen veggies.
The effect of diet is seriously underestimated in beauty care. While consumption of fruits and fruit juices is said to be good for the skin, it is best to avoid oily and masala rich foods. While orange juice has been voted the best for skin, not many are aware of the benefits of coconut water when it comes to skin care. The liquid, considered the purest one after water, hydrates the skin, making it look more youthful and supple. Studies say that the antioxidants and cytokinins present in coconut water have an age defying effect on skin. The nutritious value of the drink has always been acknowledged. If you are feeling weak or have stomach problems, drink coconut water for an energy boost. An advantage it has over fruit juices is that you can easily have a glass a day since it is almost entirely fat free and

lunch, or make an effort to order extra sides when eating out to make sure you get at least one cup of salad or vegetables with your meal. 3. Too much coffee In controlled amounts, coffee has few side effects and may even have some health benefits, but consumed at the wrong time, with too much milk and sugar, coffee can become excessive kilojoules we do not need. Why does this happen? Drinking coffee with colleagues is an enjoyable pastime at work; a coffee break helps to break up the day and appears to be a relatively harmless habit. The issue is that milk-based coffees sipped over
a number of hours are interpreted by the body as constant eating, which can disrupt the body's natural hunger and fullness signals and lead to weight gain. Solution: Aim for just one or two milkbased coffees a day, and try and drink them with meals. Stick to plain black coffee or green tea in between. 4. Eating dinner too late It is common for families to eat at 9pm or even 10pm but the body should have 10 to 12 hours without food overnight for bodyweight regulation and appetite control. Why does it happen? Busy lifestyles and long commutes are just two of the reasons we are getting home and eating our meals much later than we did 20
Soon after lunch, people experience afternoon slump. Citrus fruits or dark chocolates can help you in being more productive at work. Chips from the vending machine or cookies your co-worker baked are not what your brain needs. Below is a list of food items to keep you alert: Dark chocolate: When you eat dark chocolate, compounds in cocoa called flavanols produce a surge in blood flow to the brain. That helps you feel awake and alert. Citrus fruits: Just sniffing them can stimulate alertness. Eat an orange, and you also benefit from vitamin C. Water: Just about every system in the body suffers when we're dehydrated, including the brain. So, keep a reusable bottle or cup on your desk to remind you to drink. Coffee or tea: Caffeine keeps you alert and also boosts cognitive performance, concentration and focus.
sugar free. There are also studies which say that coconut water dabbed on skin has a positive effect. However, there are no studies to prove this. Well, drink coconut water every day and watch your skin glow!

FIFA has told officials in Curitiba they have until February 18 to prove they can get their stadium ready for the World Cup or risk exclusion from the tournament. The 43,000-seater Arena da Baixada is so far behind schedule that FIFA does not know when it might be ready and the organisation's secretary general said he will decide in three weeks whether to drop the city from the tournament. The Socceroos are scheduled to play their final Group B match against Spain at the stadium on June 23. "As you can imagine, the current situation of the stadium is not something we really appreciate," Jerome Valcke told reporters on a visit to the ground. "The stadium is not only late, it is very, very late. "If you don't have a stadium you can't have games," he added. "It is an emergency situation." Brazil's sports minister said his government would do everything to avoid the potential embarrassment. "All our efforts are focused on taking the measures that will guarantee the Parana stadium is in the 2014 World Cup," Aldo Rebelo said after meeting with president Dilma Rousseff and the head of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach. The stadium is only 88.8 per cent complete, according to owners Atletico Paranaense. It was supposed to be ready in December but like five other grounds due to be finished last month it

is behind schedule. Australia's FFA says it has major concerns for Socceroos fans travelling to Curitiba who may already have booked flights and accommodation. "FFA has noted FIFA's comments that Curitiba's World Cup stadium is only 90 per cent complete and missed the initial December 31 deadline and will seek advice from FIFA on the issue," an FFA spokesman said in a statement. "The prospect of matches being moved from Curitiba raises serious concerns, particularly for Socceroo fans who have secured tickets and made flight and hotel bookings.
"We hope the measures announced will ensure that Curitiba's readiness will be confirmed by the 18 February deadline." Refurbishments also delayed One of the six, the Arena das Dunas in Natal, is due to be handed over to FIFA on Thursday. The Corinthians Arena which is due to host the opening match in Sao Paulo will not be ready until April 15 after a fatal accident set construction back by months. The World Cup's opening game between Brazil and Croatia is scheduled to be held there on June 12. The delay at the Arena da Baixada in
the south of the country is all the more perplexing because the stadium is one of the few built in Brazil during the last two decades and is merely being refurbished for the 2014 tournament. The venue is one of the least expensive of the 12 grounds at a cost of 326 million reais ($156.77 million). Four group games will take place there and world champions Spain are to be based in the city. Spain take on Australia there on June 23. However, the reform has been plagued by delays. Valcke convinced Atletico in August to abandon plans to install a retractable roof because there was not enough time. Judicial authorities ordered work to be halted in October because of alleged risk to construction workers. A month later, city councillors launched an investigation into allegations of overcharging and corruption. Airports and public transportation are also a huge problem as Brazil prepares to host the tournament for the first time since 1950. At least five host cities will not complete the promised bus lanes, tram systems or metro lines they promised. Civil aviation authorities admitted on Monday that visitors to Fortaleza, where Brazil plays its second match against Mexico, will arrive at an airport whose terminal building will be built from canvas because the proposed new structure will not be ready in time.
Fiji FA chief executive officer Bob Kumar says the plan will be documented and presented to the
executive committee for approval before being implemented in the football system.

DeMerit's primary personal goal is to remain healthy for the entire season after he was injured while going up for a header early in the 2013 season opener against Toronto FC. Robinson said the central defender's ability to shine after he recovered and became "a rock again" late in the campaign is not a concern. "I think (his comeback) shows a little bit about his comport," said Robinson. "Everybody wrote him off and maybe me included last year because he had an horrific injury on the first day of the season." Robinson said DeMerit's re-signing will help the team go in "the right direction" and deal with the uncertainty that has arisen in wake of Camilo's departure and confusion about whether Lewis, a 19-year-old Jamaican who was chosen seventh overall in the MLS SuperDraft, will play in MLS this year. "We want players that want to be at the club," said Robinson. "(DeMerit) wants to be at the club and we want (him) be at the club, and that's why he continues to be at the club. For growth in any type of club, you need stability, and (DeMerit) is part of that stability." Lewis, who has expressed a strong to play for Vancouver, has already signed with the lower-tier New York Cosmos. But Robinson said he expects that the midfielder will be at Vancouver's upcoming training camp. "I think there's an agreement between Major League Soccer and the Cosmos (for Lewis to join the Whitecaps)," said Robinson. "We're looking forward to having him in camp once his visa arrives." Notes: Robinson said central defender Andy O'Brien has overcome injuries that kept him out of the lineup for much of last season and will be ready for training camp. Players will undergo physicals Saturday and begin the on-field portion of their training camp Monday.
field," he said. "I came here for a reason three years ago, and that was to help develop soccer in North America and help develop the Vancouver Whitecaps as an MLS franchise. "What this contract does is solidify that for the future." He also felt it was important to give the Caps some stability after Camilo's departure. The Brazilian striker bolted the team to train with Queretaro of Mexico's top league and then angered team officials by donning his new squad's jersey before a transfer deal was completed last week. "As the leader for (our) club, I have to provide stability," he said. "That's part of my role, definitely, in these types of situations." DeMerit has often praised Camilo for his unique shooting and scoring abilities. But the captain contended that Camilo's absence will not affect the Whitecaps, who missed the playoffs in 2013 even though the former Vancouver star scored 22 goals. "I'm sure the message from day one will be: Everyone who is here is here and the past is the past," said DeMerit.
"What you have to consider is that we're all in this together. And, when you have that, then you realize that certain players aren't here anymore and you don't dwell on those things anymore, and the easier it is to move forward. "And what we have to do here is move forward." But the Caps still must address the nagging question of which newcomers will move the club ahead. In contrast to Toronto FC, the Whitecaps have not made any star acquisitions since Carl Robinson, who has never been a head coach before, replaced the fired Martin Rennie. "There's no secret that we still need to make a few more additions that will help the character of this club and help the experience of this club," said DeMerit. "But I think that the nucleus is there (in) both older and younger players that are here and have already contributed. Now, it's just (about) making sure that we add to that and all the guys contribute in their own way and make sure that we can have a successful season."
