The value of the global operations and maintenance (O&M) market is expected to increase from $3 billion in 2008 to $19 billion by 2020 GlobalData

ONSHORE WIND O&M

Recently there have been signicant improvements in the performance of wind turbines. So much so that the on-going cost of operating and maintaining them has decreased by roughly 38% since 2008 - a recent Bloomberg report stated. Operational performance and efficiency of wind assets has increased in importance for owners and investors, and now they want to take a further step in the path towards cost reduction by taking more control of their own assets. To manage their operational expenditure OPEX spend more effectively, owners need to know how their assets operate, what steps they must take for constant optimised performance and how to prevent unplanned downtime. This means strategies for ongoing O&M are being heavily scrutinised. Who to use and how to perform on-going maintenance is not a simple issue. Do owners need to maintain a good relationship with their turbine supplier to ensure access to spare parts when needed or can independent suppliers handle this effectively? How should contracts be structured to ensure maximum prots and minimised losses? What technologies should be invested in to enhance performance and where is this possible? Given the post warranty landscape, now is the time for operators to review their strategies and renegotiate their service contracts. OFFSHORE WIND O&M

Given its infancy there are currently no standardised technical or commercial practices for offshore O&M. This work however still accounts for roughly a quarter of the life-time cost of an offshore wind farm. A recent Scottish Enterprise study claims that the O&M of more than 5,500 offshore turbines could be worth almost 2bn per annum by 2025. Effectively operating and maintaining these offshore wind farms in increasingly hard to reach locations can be a costly, technically challenging and an extremely hazardous experience for both the company and its workforce. If costs are to remain within budget then careful planning, preparation, supplier and contractor selection is essential. When it comes to the turbine itself, many issues onshore and offshore are the same. The key differences for offshore O&M is that, due to its age, operators need to effectively plan for end of warranty [EOW] - scrutinising warranty agreements and how to best carry out EOW inspections to avoid defective components and rejected claims.
