Introdu&tion
Intelligence is the ability to respond adaptively to new situations, to think abstractly and to comprehend complex ideas. I: is the abbreviation for Intelligence :uotient. 8he word 2uotient means the number of times that one number will divide into another. .n intelligence test BI: 8estC is a standardiDed test designed to measure human intelligence as distinct from attainments. 8he measured I: of children is e2ual to mental age divided by actual BchronologicalC age. !or example, if a child of eight years of age obtains a score expected of a ten=year=old, the child will have a measured I: of *&4, by means of the following

calculation3 E *'' F I: or _ * 1 '_ E *'' F *&4 I: 8his method of calculating I: does not apply to adults because beyond the age of *1 there is little or no improvement in mental development. .dults, therefore, have to be Gudged on an I: test in which the average score is *''. 8he results are graded above and below this norm according to known test scores. Hental age ___ /hronological age
*

8he tests that have been compiled for this book have not been standardiDed, so an actual I: assessment cannot be given. @owever, at the end of this Introduction there is a guide to assessing your performance in each test and also a cumulative guide for your overall performance on all ten tests. 8he tests are intended as valuable practice for readers who may have to take an I: test in the future, and they will also help to increase your vocabulary and to develop your powers of calculation and logical reasoning. 8he 2uestions are challenging, and deliberately so, as this is the only way to boost your performance and increase your brainpower. 8he book consists of ten separate tests for you to attempt, each of +' 2uestions. Each test is of approximately the same degree of difficulty. . time limit of +0 ,inutes is allowed for each test. 8he correct answers are given at the end of the book, and you should award yourself one point for each correct answer. $se the following tables to assess your performance3 One test Score Rating >9I+' Exceptional >*I>4 Excellent &4I>' Jery good *-I&+ "ood *+I*1 .verage Ten tests Score Rating >4*I+'' Exceptional >'*I>4' Excellent &+*I>'' Jery good *1*I&+' "ood *+'I*1' .verage
