Objectives
This manual consists of the boot and mini applications software of Tellabs 8620 access switch, Tellabs 8630 access switch, Tellabs 8660 edge switch and Tellabs 8605 access switch. The latest detailed description of the upgrade procedure is presented in chapter 1 Installation Notes. At the beginning of the manual you can nd the Tellabs 8620 access switch, Tellabs 8630 access switch and Tellabs 8660 edge switch related embedded software interrelation tables for: boot and mini-applications software Chapters 2 Mini-Application Software and 3 Boot Software have the following structure: The chapter heading gives the network element related embedded software. Some general information of the network element and embedded software is given. The chapter is divided in subchapters according to different versions. The latest version is always described rst. Under every embedded software version there are the following items; enhancements, dependencies, restrictions and bugs. The following conventions are used in the release notes. The text No known bugs means that there are no bugs known to Tellabs Oy. The text No known restrictions under version information means that there are no restrictions when using this version of software or hardware.

This manual is designed for Tellabs 8600 network element installation personnel and system specialists when planning or maintaining the network, updating software or installing network elements.

The following embedded software interrelation tables are shown below: Tellabs 8600 boot and mini-applications software. The tables show in a compact form the dependencies between Tellabs 8600 embedded software and dependencies between Tellabs 8600 embedded software and Tellabs 8600 hardware. See the embedded software release note of a relevant network element for more information. The notations used in the rows of the network element dependencies and compatible network elements and embedded software versions are explained in the following table.

Rows marked in bold indicate the SW products currently in production. Rows marked in italics indicate the fast lane or FCS SW products that are not generally available.

1.1 Boot and Mini-Application Update for Application SW Version 2.8.213 and Higher
The following chapters describe how to update the boot and mini-application software version 2.8.213 or higher. There is only one le which includes both the boot and mini-application software, refer to the instructions below describing the update procedure.
The update procedure is mandatory for Tellabs 8630 access switch and Tellabs 8660 edge switch, and only optional in the case of Tellabs 8605 access switch and Tellabs 8620 access switch.

The installation of boot and mini-application software is only possible via the CLI interface (not using Tellabs 8000 network manager).

1.1.1

Mandatory Update Procedure for Tellabs 8630 Access Switch and Tellabs 8660 Edge Switch
Prior to installing the application software version 2.8.213 or higher in Tellabs 8630 access switch and Tellabs 8660 edge switch it is mandatory that the boot and mini-application software of the CDC and IFC are rst updated, boot software to version 3.4.0 or higher and mini-application to version 2.8.191 or higher. These versions add support for a larger amount of conguration les in the le system. A large amount of les is to be created by the application software version 2.8.213 or higher.
If the update is not done correctly, it may cause trafc breaks due to an innite reset loop on such a card when version 2.8.213 or higher software is booted for the rst time. The only way to recover from this situation is to send such a card to the Tellabs repair service.

pkg_8660_boot_2.8.191 software package is common for both Tellabs 8630 access switch and Tellabs 8660 edge switch.

Step 1 Step 2

Load boot and mini-application package pkg_8660_boot_2.8.191 to the directory /ash/appl-sw/slot14 using FTP. Use command "boot system slot 14 ash: pkg_8660_boot_2.8.191 to activate the boot and mini-application.

1 Installation Notes

Do not switch the power off during the operation as it may cause a situation in which there is no valid boot software at all.

After the installation is completed it is important to verify that the new boot and mini-application software versions have been installed, using the CLI command show sw-version under PEXEC conguration mode. 7: boot SW gmz2710-3.4.0 3.4.0 7: mini-application SW gmz2711_2.8.191 2.8.191 Backup. ... 14: boot SW gmz2700-3.4.0 3.4.0 14: mini-application SW gmz2702_2.8.191 2.8.191 Backup. Check for each slot that the boot software version is 3.4.0 or higher and the mini-application software version is 2.8.191 or higher. If the software versions are correct, the application software version 2.8.213 or higher can be installed to the network element using CLI or Tellabs 8000 network manager according to the standard procedure. If the software versions are incorrect, repeat from Step 1 the boot and mini-application installation sequence without rebooting the cards. Note: There is no need to do a separate boot in order to do the nal activation of the boot and mini-application software.

1.1.2

Update Procedure for Tellabs 8620 Access Switch and Tellabs 8605 Access Switch
It is optional to update the boot and mini-application in the case of Tellabs 8620 access switch and Tellabs 8605 access switch before installing the application software version 2.8.213 or higher. However, if you decide to update the boot and mini-application, do it according to the following procedure:

Step 1

Load boot and mini-application package to the directory /ash/appl-sw using FTP. pkg_8620_boot_2.8.191 for Tellabs 8620 access switch. pkg_8605_boot_x.y.z for Tellabs 8605 access switch.

Step 2

Use command "boot system ash: <package_name> to activate the boot and mini-application.
