6 - Weekly Reminder-Paulding County Progress Monday, January 27, 2013
The administration, faculty, and staff of Wayne
Trace Local Schools hope that you`re Iinding
2014 to be everything that you had hoped it would
be. Congratulations to those of you who have
kept your resolutions. Hopefully, they are making
an improved difference in the quality of your life.
Speaking of quality, high academic expectations
continue to be at the forefront as we progress
through the 2013-2014 school year. Educating
our youth is a collective effort between the school
and home, and your continued cooperation is
needed as we place high demands on our students
to perform at a high level in the classroom. At
times, this means supporting what may be per-
ceived as too much homework. We are confident
that our teachers do not assign homework for the
purpose of giving students work to do. The gen-
eral goal of homework is to reinforce the lessons
learned in the classroom. Again, school officials
appreciate your support as we continue to strive
for an improved overall rating on the Ohio
Department of Education state report card.
Speaking of ratings and the state report card, I
would once again like to remind our parents/
guardians and community members that the test-
ing system, as we currently know it, will change
in the 2014-2015 school year with the expected
implementation of the PARCC system, an entirely
on-line testing process. The bar will be raised
signiIicantly next year. Earning a 'proIicient
score will no longer be a passing score. Students
must earn what is now considered to be an
'accelerated score in order to be a passing score.
This will likely have a dramatic impact on school
building and school district ratings. As I`ve stated
many times, the faculty and staff of Wayne Trace
Local Schools is dedicated to teaching the state
content standards to its students each day, which
we expect to lessen the potentially negative effect
of much higher expectations from the state level.
Continuing the academic theme. we would
once again like to highlight our successful appli-
cation for the Straight A Grant, a multi-million
dollar grant being awarded to many oI Ohio`s
school districts. We have lofty goals for our share
of this money, including an upgrade to our new
Wayne Trace Digital Academy; the purchase of
several hundred additional lap tops for our JH/HS
students; and many more access points throughout
the JH/HS building. With the addition of these
several hundred computers, we will then be able
to move our one-year-old mobile labs/computers
to our two elementary schools, giving each ele-
mentary school nearly one hundred additional
up-to-date computers. Technology continues to
play an important role in the education oI today`s
youth, and the Straight A Grant will enable us to
continue making positive strides. I once again
extend a huge thank you to Mrs. Chris Feichter
and the curriculum directors from Paulding,
Crestview, and Lincolnview, who spent many
hours preparing the application for this large sum
of money.
Turning to the district calendar, the recent snow
storm and subsequent canceling of several school
days has now taken us over our annual allowable
number of calamity days. Combined with the day
we missed for the state football tournament game,
we have now missed seven days of school.
Therefore, we currently have two days to make up
with the first make-up day coming on Monday,
February 17 and second make-up day coming on
Thursday, May 29. Any additional calamity days
will be made up on May 30, June 2, etc. If you
have any questions about the district calendar for
this school year, Ieel Iree to contact the principal`s
oIIice at your child(ren)`s building(s).
We continue to seek nominations for the Wayne
Trace Staff Hall of Fame Class of 2014. Please
consider nominating a worthy former staff mem-
ber who may have had an extraordinary impact on
your liIe. Last month`s newsletter contained
instructions for how to make a nomination, but if
you have any questions about this process, feel
free to contact the central office.
The Ohio State Board of Education has
designated January as 'School Board Member
Appreciation Month. The men and women who
serve on local boards of education do so out of
sincere interest in their local schools. With that
said, we would like to thank our local board mem-
bers for their service and dedication to Wayne
Trace Local Schools. Remember that community
members are welcome to attend school board
meetings, which are typically held on the second
Monday of each month starting at 7:30 in the high
school lecture room.
As always, if you have questions or concerns
about your child`s educational experience at
Wayne Trace, feel free to contact your building
principal or superintendent.
Go Raiders!
EARLY CHILDHOOD SCREENING
A free screening for children from birth to age 5
years has been scheduled for Friday, February 7,
at Antwerp Methodist Church from 11:00 a.m. to
2:00 p.m. If school is delayed or cancelled on that
day, screenings will be held on February 14.
Children will be screened for development,
hearing, speech and vision. To register for this
screening, please call 1-877-473-8166 (toll free).
After hours, dial extension 41 to leave a message.
Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins will be
accepted.
This is coordinated by Help Me Grow, Dept. of
Ed., Pldg. Co. Hospital, Ohio Dept. of Health,
NOCAC, Pldg. Co. EI/DD, Family & Children
First Council, Antwerp Local Schools, Paulding
Village Schools and Wayne Trace Local Schools.
WT PAYNE ELEMENTARY
Jody L. Dunham, Principal
The arrival of February causes us to pause and
reflect. We want to take time to remember the
milestones that have been met this school year.
We also want to focus on the remaining instruc-
tion that lies before us. Our students and staff are
focused on preparing for the upcoming Ohio
Achievement Assessments. The staff at WTPE is
committed to providing our students with the
knowledge and resources needed to be prepared
for these assessments. Please call or email us if
you have any questions about the OAA. We
welcome the opportunity to give families the
educational tools needed to support their child.
We wish to congratulate Jayde Garcia for
correctly spelling the word 'bolide to become
our building Spelling Bee champion and repre-
sentative at the Paulding County Spelling Bee.
We also wish to congratulate runner-up Sydney
Coyne for her accomplishment.
We have several reminders this month. First,
we want to remind you to mark your calendars
that school will be in session on February 17.
This will be a make-up day.
Second, the Kidzone after school program will
take place February 12 from 3:15 to 4:30. This is
a new after school opportunity provided by the
Payne Ministerial Association.
Third, please remember that it is vital for us to
have current phone numbers and addresses for our
students. It is important that we are able to
contact parents during the school day when neces-
sary. The Honeywell Instant Alert System makes
it important that we have valid working numbers
to let you know about school delays, cancellations
and early dismissals. If you change your contact
information or would like to add other family
members to this service, please contact the school.
A very special 'Thank You is extended to
everyone who participates in the Box Tops for
Education program. We appreciate the time you
take to clip the coupons and send them to WTPE.
In January, we received a check from this pro-
gram for over $1,160. The money will be used
for educational assemblies. Way to go!
WT GROVER HILL ELEMENTARY
Kevin E. Wilson, Principal
I would like to begin by congratulating Lauren
Walls, this year`s Spelling Bee winner and
Andrew Sinn, this year`s runner-up. Lauren, the
daughter of William and Kim Wall, will represent
WTGH at the Paulding County Spelling Bee on
January 27. If for some reason Lauren is unable
to participate, Andrew, the son of Steven and Joy
Sinn will take Lauren`s place as the WTGH repre-
sentative. Congratulations to Lauren and Andrew
as well as all the participated in this year`s
Spelling Bee.
The annual WTGH Book Fair begins on
January 27. The book fair is an outstanding
opportunity for students and parents to purchase
quality books. The book fair will be open from
8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. all week.
There are two important dates to be noted for
the month of February. First, school will be in
session on February 17, President`s Day. This
day was originally scheduled as a holiday for the
students and staff, but with the success of the
WTHS Football team we must makeup this day.
On Wednesday, February 26 school will not be in
session due to a teacher in-service. Parents, make
sure to mark your calendars for these two days.
WT JR./SR. HIGH SCHOOL
Greg Leeth, Principal
We are now well into the third quarter and
second semester of the school year. Before you
know it, we will be preparing for spring sports,
prom, and graduation!
After an extended Christmas break due to a
string of calamity days, staff and students have
once again settled into a routine. As of this
writing, we have two school days to make up;
these days will be made up February 17 and May
29. Additional make up days, if needed, will be
added to the end of the school year.
The junior high spelling bee was held on
Monday, January 13. Seventh grader Levi Manz,
son of Marvin and Jennifer Manz, won the bee.
Connor Baumle, an eighth grader and son of Pat
and Wendy Baumle finished runner up.
Levi correctly spelled extinguish and propulsion
after Connor misspelled exorcism in the final
round. Levi will compete at the county spelling
bee on Monday, January 27, at Paulding Middle
School Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. Congratulations
to Levi and Connor and to all of those who partic-
ipated in the event!
The junior and senior high school will welcome
Bob Lenz, author and international speaker, for an
assembly on February 5. His assemblies explore
issues like 'bullying, selI-harm, suicide and
substance use while using his unique gift of
humor. Somewhere between laughing at one of
his embarrassing moments and getting choked up
over a true story, students realize their lives have
been changed. The assembly was made possible
through the organizational efforts of Connor Ham,
a Defiance High School student. Mr. Lenz will be
speaking to students at a number of schools in
Defiance, Paulding, Van Wert, Putnam, and
surrounding counties.
The Wayne Trace FFA will be celebrating
National FFA week during the week of February
17. The celebration will culminate with a pancake
and sausage breakfast on Saturday, February 22,
from 7:00-11:00 a.m. in the high school cafeteria.
February 26 will serve as a district staff
in-service day. Students will not have school on
that day.
We are approaching state testing times in Ohio.
Teachers are planning intervention and reviewing
concepts for students who will be taking the OGT
and OAA. OGT test dates are March 10-23 and
OAA test dates are April 21-May 9.
As always, feel free to contact us anytime if you
have questions or concerns about your child`s
education.
