Course Out of Order (Disease): Unit 2 - Mind Why?


For the second unit of the course, students study the the impact of neurological impairments and disorders on the life and learning of people affected. This FE will focus on the lived experience of people with autism as opposed to the perspectives of those who diagnose only. The purpose is for students to walk away with professional insight into how they can support real life situations At the end of this FE, students will have: seen examples from popular culture of people living with autism; interviewed a mental health professional about these experiences; identified situations in which people with autism/mental illness struggle; drafted lessons which would allow students to experience these feelings.

What are students working on prior to FE? - Research autism using the DSM Criteria; compile data into External Investigation - Read about the CSPP About and Breedas Profile - Formulate 5-8 autism-specific questions; - Establish student roles What are students doing during FE? Watch Selected clips from Touch (TV series on Netflix, TR has account) or A Mother's Courage (documentary) Verbal discussion after Read - The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime (book excerpt) Choose excerpt, close out-loud reading, oral discussion

Annotate & pose - questions during interview (w/ Breeda) Lesson/Action Project Working from lesson templates Similarities and differences of those experiences and then look at what action research projects could be helpful to the community that would help them be more integrated and better understood/supported. Brainstorm with students where, based on criteria for autism (and other neurological impairments), situations where they 1) would struggle and 2) could be better supported (Breedas friend only after an initial, criteria/symptom-based brainstorm) Debrief session, select quote best representing the experience, write one paragraph explaining reasoning
