Students are required to keep a laboratory notebook for all experiments done throughout the quarter using the guidelines provided belo ! "hese guidelines for keeping a laboratory notebook mimi# those used for preparing a te#hni#al manus#ript for publi#ation in a s#ientifi# $ournal! GENERAL GUIDELINES: "he laboratory notebook is here all primary data is #olle#ted hile orking in the laboratory! "he laboratory notebook is typi#ally a ruled notebook %lined paper& ith pages that #annot be easily torn out or removed! ' marbled #omposition notebook is adequate for this laboratory! "he #ourse name( student)s name( and lab! se#tion should appear on the #over of the notebook! "he first fe pages of the notebook should be set up as a table of #ontents! "he notebook pages should be numbered #onse#utively! 'll data and re#ords should be ritten in permanent ink %no pen#ils or erasable pens&! *t is useful and a##eptable to re#ord data only on every other page of the notebook %right hand side&( reserving the alternate page %left hand side& for $otting do n notes( #al#ulations and for taping in experimental data! *t is imperative that the riting in the notebook is legible! +a#h group must have a logo unique to everybody! Submit a final report meeting after the experiment as done! ,se - . x 11 si/e of bond paper ith 0!12 borderline %invisible&! 3uidelines in making final report are sho n belo ! DETAILED GUIDELINES: TITLE ABSTRACT Copy the title of the experiment from the lab! manual! 'n abstra#t is a formal summary %usually 45006300 ords( but may be shorter& of a longer( more detailed report! ,se #omplete senten#es and paragraph stru#ture( usually ith no embedded headings( bullets or tables! "he third person( past tense is used! "he introdu#tion is a brief s#ientifi# ob$e#tive or explanation of the experiment! 7ften( a graphi#al representation of the experiment being #arried may be used! *f the experiment involves synthesis of a #ompound( this se#tion should in#lude the amounts of ea#h reagent being used( their mole#ular eights and any other pertinent physi#al data on these #hemi#als %i!e!8 densities( boiling points( melting points( et#!& in tabular form! "he methods or pro#edure is a re#ord of hat as done during the experiment! "his is a des#ription of hat as a#tually done and is not a #opy of the pro#edure ritten in the lab! manual! "he pro#edure should be re#orded as you are #ondu#ting the experiment and should in#lude enough information that someone else #ould repeat the experiment! "he pro#edure #an be ritten in standard text or using a flo #hart method! 9e sure to in#lude any deviation from pro#edures outlined in the lab! manual! :ields( spe#tral data( #al#ulations and any other data des#ribing the out#ome of the experiment are reported in the results se#tion of the lab! notebook! "ables or figures are often ex#ellent ays to #learly and thoroughly present experimental results! *n general( interpretation of the results is reserved for the dis#ussion se#tion! "he dis#ussion se#tion is the most important part of the experimental report sin#e it is in this se#tion that you demonstrate your understanding of the experiment! "he experimental results are dis#ussed in relation to ho these results spe#ifi#ally illustrate the s#ientifi# purpose or hypothesis of the experiment! "he referen#e se#tion of the report is a bibliography of the experiment! *t should in#lude all referen#e sour#es used for #ondu#ting the experiment!
