FEBRUARY 2014

Every February, you probably see a lot of heart-themed decor in stores, school, or maybe even in your church. Thats fine, but what does it really mean to focus on our hearts this time of year? Move past the paper-heart cutouts and into transformed hearts; God often transforms our hearts when we share his love and give to others. Thats why Jesus said that its more blessed to give than to receive. Use this idea to serve others and see how God changes your kids hearts (and yours). Change your kids hearts by giving them a bank of simple service project ideas they can do on their own. You will need a Bible, white paper lunch bags, markers, and slips of paper. Give kids each a paper lunch bag and have them decorate their bags with hearts. Have kids write From [their name]s heart on the bag. For example, From Sashas heart. Read aloud Mark 10:43-45. Ask: What does it mean to do the job of a slave or servant? What are ways you enjoy serving people? Give kids slips of paper and have them write or draw at least 10 simple ways they can give to or serve others, one idea per slip. For example, do someone elses chores, make a picture for a friend, or pull weeds for a neighbor. Help younger kids draw pictures you can caption. Once theyre finished, have kids put their slips of paper in their bags. Say: Jesus said to be first, we must serve others. Whenever youre feeling like you want to be first, pull out one slip of paper and serve in the way you wrote.
