A MESSAGE FROM OUR GOVERNOR

Fellow Members, Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a joyful season with their families. I know we did here at the Claymont

Moose Lodge.
Kelly Clark ran a very fun and successful children's Christmas party. Thanks to your generosity, almost 50 kids left with a full belly and presents that they specifically asked for. Then it was our turn! Rita Anderson and the Women of the Moose threw an awesome adult Christmas Party. Excellent food, holiday drink specials, fun door prizes, and DJ Woody were all in the house.
But what makes me most proud to be a Moose member is what we did as a group for our local community. Lois and Kenny Veid took it upon themselves to help one of their neighbors that had come on hard times. They helped raise hundreds of dollars in cash and gift cards, food donations, and Christmas presents for the children. That family will remember the Veids and the Claymont Moose for the rest of their lives. Also, Mike Slotwinski did the same for the daughter of a past Claymont Lodge member. She and her five children had food, presents, and pleasant holiday memories, thanks to the Claymont Moose. And, knowing our members, there are probably dozens more stories just like this of which I am not aware. Finally, I would like to thank all of our members who donated food during our food drive.

I look forward to representing the Claymont Moose during the MD-DE-DC Moose Association Mid-Year Conference coming up February 6-9 in Ocean City, MD. All are encouraged to attend and represent our lodge and chapter. Til next time. Spring cannot come fast enough. Fraternally yours, Andy Zeager

CLAYMONT MOOSE FAMILY CENTER UPDATES

Election of Officers-Why do we elect Lodge and Chapter officers? While the answer may seem obvious (to provide direction and leadership), it's also a legal requirement as every Lodge is incorporated in the state province in which it is located and all those jurisdictions require the election of corporate officers.
Holding an office is a very important responsibility requiring personal commitment and obligations in order to be successful. lf you are interested in submitting your name for nomination of an office, be sure to talk with a current officer to learn more about the process and important duties involved. Once your name is submitted, it will be reviewed by the Nominating Committee who may also consider and recommend other candidates whose names were not submitted, but who they consider most qualified. We need capable individuals to help lead the Lodge and Chapter--individuals who seriously want to get involved, fully understand the responsibilities, and are willing to fulfill all of the obligations expected of an officer.

Our new Lodge/Chapter year begins on May 1. Sheets will soon be posted at the Lodge listing the open positions available. Here's your opportunity to make a difference. Please note the following important dates:

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

THINGS YOUR BURGLAR WON'T TELL YOU
1. Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never, ever

look like a crook.

2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier. 3. Love those flowers- That tells me you have taste... and taste means there are nice things inside. By the way, those yard toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have.
4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizzaflyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it.

5. lf it snows while you're out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway
are a dead giveaway.

6. lf decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don't let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it's set. That makes it too easy.

7.

I'm not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it?

8. A good security company alarms the windows over the sink....and the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom - and your jewelry. lt's not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.

9. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. lf you're reluctant to leave your TV on while you're
out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. Find it at
ir1lp'4cwrs-ia(e-tvl.eplL/_zi'29

10.

I don't

lt's raining, you're fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door - understandable. But understand this: take a day off because of bad weather.

11. I always knock first. lf you answer, I'll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don't take me up on it.). lf you don't answer when I knock, I try the door. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in.

cabinet. Here's a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids' rooms.

12. Do you really think I won't look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine

13. You're right: I won't have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it's not bolted down, l'lltake it with me.

14. The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors.

15. I love looking

in your windows. I'm looking for signs that you're home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I'd like. I'll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets. I'll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. lf your neighbor hears one loud sound, he'll stop what he's doing and wait to hear it again. lf he doesn't hear it again, he'll just go back to what he was doing. lt's human nature. To you, leaving that window open luit a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it's an invitation.

16. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. lt's easier than you think to look up your address.

Protection for vou and vour home: (lf you don't have a gun, here's a more humane way to wreck someone's evil plans for you) Wasp spray can shoot up to twenty feet away and the aim is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray, attackers have to get too close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds attackers until they get to the hospital for an antidote. Keep cans nearby at home for home protection and keep a can on your desk at work-the cans don't attract attention from people like a can of pepper spray.
