Albert beckoned his son, Josh into the foyer to show him the unusual
meteorological event that can signal the approach of a tornado or severe
thunderstorm. Seconds later, lightning struck followed by a low rumble of thunder
And then, torrential rain.
Darlene, Alberts wife was too busy to notice the oncoming storm. She was talking
to a friend, Arista Rose, in a small office. The two mums had met only a few months
earlier, but they had quickly bonded when they discovered they shared the same
passion: English bulldogs. Arista was a professional dog breeder while Darlene was
fond of bulldogs. Arista clicked from one photo to another on the computer, showing
Darlene photographs of her new puppies.
Suddenly, a blinding blue flash shot up from under the computer. The screen
went blank and a rainbow of sparks filled the air. Arista was punched on her hand and
was slammed against the back of her chair. Darlenes arm burned and her whole body
jerked before she felt he current flowing out of her fingertips. Darlene recovered from
shock and screamed for help.
At first, Albert and Josh did not hear her. They were concentrating on a lightning
streak that hit a flower bed ten feet from the front door. When they finally heard the
scream, they rushed to the room. Their eyes went wide when they saw Arista. Her
hair was standing on
and she was bouncing up and down like her feet were on
fire.Albert grabbed her before she hit the floor. Arista went into violent convulsions.
Albert quickly surrounded her with sofa cushions, ready to perform CPR if necessary.
Meanwhile, Darlene had recovered enough to call 911, using her uninjured hand.
But it was hard to hear the operator in the pandemonium with the dogs barking and
the children screaming.
The ambulance came and Arista was sent to the hospital in nearby Mount Forest,
where Darlene was also examined. Darlenes injury was only a small burn. The ER
doctor said Arista might not be able to able to pull through. In less than an hour, Arista
had 21 seizures, drifting in and out of consciousness. Half of her body felt icy cold.
By midnight, she was transferred to a medical centre where she could be treated by
neurologists.
She spent three days in ICU of London Health Sciences Centre, in Ontario,
IV medication to stop her seizures. When Arista was released from the hospital,
on Darlene noticed that her friend was far from well. She moved in slow motion, like
somebody who had just woken up and it was painful to talk to her because she
was confused and kept saying, Huh? Her eyes were twitching and shaking, and she
couldnt focus, she said.
A week into her recovery, Arista had excruciating headaches, memory problems she
and severe sensitivity to light. These strange phenomena lasted only a month. Today,
she is still plagued by headaches and had a minor seizure recently. After the incident
Arista never switched on any electrical appliances during thunderstorm. They say
that lightning never strikes twice, but Im not taking any chances! she said.
