St. X English teacher inspiring every day

n front of seven students at St. Xavier Catholic School, English teacher Kristen Dinsmore paced around her classroom with enthusiasm as she spoke about renowned author Mark Twain. Mark Twain is probably one the two most well-known people to come out of Missouri, Dinsmore said to her students. The other one being Harry Truman. Some may argue Brad Pitt. The mention of the movie star drew a few giggles. As the students leaned forward in their chairs, Dinsmore continued to talk about Twains life and his works. His life was a series of adventures, he travelled widely and he wrote about the places he went, she said. After students read a couple of paragraphs from Twains The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, they noticed his use of long words and complex sentences. Thats why people liked Twain, Dinsmore said. It feels like someone is just talking to you, even with the big words mixed in. Before the class came to an end, she instructed the high school juniors to put bookmarks in between the pages of Twains work. The bell rung and students were greeted as they left the room. For seven years, Dinsmore has taught St. Xavier students the works of famous authors and the mechanics of English. Its the best part of her job. Im never bored, Dinsmore said about working with students. Each day is different, even when my schedule is set. The kids make it interesting, thats the part I love.

A day in Glenn Rogers shoes can be dirty, cold

s usual, Glenn Rogers was in the office by 6:15 a.m. He checked the readings on the citys 23 lift stations, and already, the facility near East Chestnut Street had processed 11,600 gallons of sewage. That was just by 9:30 a.m., and on an average day, that station will pump nearly 80,300 gallons of sewage. Rogers, the Water and Sewer Supervisor for Junction City, can check each of the stations from his computer at his office on North Jackson Street. But someone still has to physically check the stations every day to identify problems, he said. In the wintertime, theres another added responsibility. In cold weather, you have Junction City Water and Sewer Pharmacy. to put small heaters in there to keep them from freezing up, Rogers said. has been involved with pubWinter might seem like the lic works since the mid-90s, quiet season for the water but has only been in his curand sewer department. To provide quality infrastructure (Streets, Water Distribution, Sanitary Collection, and Drainage Conveyance) that conveys safe, efficient delivery of essential goods and services To create a safe and accessible environment for the citizens and visitors of the City of Junction City while improving the infrastructure of the City To deliver professional quality public service with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere To provide cost efficient sanitation service to the citizens and businesses within the City

bers Rod Williams and Ron Parks install a twoinch meter at the new CVS Pharmacy. They would need one of those two-inch lowflow meters at that location, so the final part of that project would have to wait. Parks and Williams still had 22 locates which involves locating water and sewer mains as well as water pressure checks to do that day. Such is the life of the sixman crew that does everything from repairing sewer

and water mains, to installing new services, to maintaining lift stations and fire hydrants. In the winter, theyre even responsible for snow removal during the day. The street department picks up the slack at night. Its not a job someone thinks is eight to five, Rogers said. Were pushed hard. Theres no such thing as a day off, he added. Rogers said hes lucky if he leaves the office by 4:30 p.m. most days. Rogers settled in Junction

City when he had 11 months left in the Army. Hes been with the city public works crew for 18 years, and in that time, much has changed. One recent example is a new regulation prohibiting the use of copper lines, due to trace amounts of lead detected in them. There are still galvanized lines within the citys system though, Rogers said. In 2014, his crew will be replacing 1.5- and 2-inch water meters with 2-inch compound meters.

Those will allow crews to take high-flow and low-flow readings, which will allow the city to gain more revenue. There are 31 two-inch meters to replace, Rogers said, and countless 1.5-inch meters. A portion of that project, installing 3- to 6-inch compound meters, has already been completed. Sometimes, Rogers cant predict what might happen next. Rogers recalled a break in the 200 block of North Garfield Street several years ago. They had to dig up a driveway to repair the line. But when they turned the water back on, the line broke three driveways down. So, his crew fixed the line a second time, but then, when they restored water service, the line broke in the 100 block of South Garfield Street. To make matters worse, the next morning, the same line broke again a few blocks away. Even sewer calls can reveal strange things, Rogers said, including dead animals, toys, jewelry, and even pairs of underwear. With a small crew and numerous responsibilities, Rogers knows his team has its limitations. Sometimes, crew members must be pulled off one task to accomplish another for example, several weeks ago, while on plow detail, three crew members had to be taken off in order to address a water main break. He believes city officials understand the position his department is in, but ordinary citizens may not. A lot of people get upset with us, he said. But with six guys, its kind of rough to get to everything. But I think we do a pretty good job.

Preparing Our Kids for the Future

Q: What are the Kansas College and Career Ready Standards? A: The Kansas College and Career Ready Standards show what students in K-12 should know and be able to do in English Language Arts and Mathematics. The standards will help all students across the State learn the same skill. The standards are designed to help all young people get prepared for college and careers. The standards were benchmarked with learning standards from other top-performing countries to ensure students in the United Stated are prepared to live and work in a global economy. Q: How were the standards developed? A: Forty-six states across the country collaborated with teachers, researchers, the leading experts to design and develop the Common Core State Standards under the guidance of National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. Each state independently made the decision to adopt the Common Core State Standards, beginning in 2010. The federal government was NOT involved in the development of the standards. Local teachers, principals, and superintendents lead the implementation of the Common Core. Q: Are these national standards? A: The federal government is NOT involved in the development of the standards. This has been a state-led and driven initiative from the beginning. States will voluntarily adopt the standards based on the timelines and context in their state.

Kansas College and Career Ready Standards

Q: What does this mean for Geary County USD 475 students? A: Following the October 2010 adoption of the KCCRS, USD 475 has been working to phase in the standards. The 2013-14 school years marks the full implementation of the KCCRS from K-12 with all grade levels continuously working together to ensure the standards are being used across grade levels and content areas. For our military-connected students, CCSS are a dramatic shift from an education experience that has traditionally been a patchwork of various standards and expectations as they move from state to state to one that will be as close to academically seamless as possible. Students will experience a better transition to new schools because schools across the country will be using the same set of academic standards with the end goal being well prepared for college or careers as they exit high school. Q: Do the standards tell teachers how to teach? A: No. They are a tool to help teachers prepare the best classroom lessons and activities. The standards also help students and parents by showing them what it takes to be successful in each grade level. They are an important roadmap for teachers, students, and parents. CAPT. DAN BREcI

Junction City Police captain enjoys leading patrol officers

By Tim Weideman

city.beat@thedailyunion.net

unction City Police Capt. Dan Breci is a busy guy. But so is every police department employee.

Compared to other cities with similar populations, Junction City has a sizeable police force. Thats mostly because it neighbors Fort Riley. At full strength, the department has 47 patrol officers. We are, in my opinion, a busy department, Breci said as he sat in his office at JCPD headquarters. My officers seldom just drive around and do nothing. Theyre usually, depending on the time, going from call to call to call. Its Brecis job to make sure those officers are doing their jobs. Hes also the administrative commander of a 16-member SWAT team. My job as an administrator keeps me pretty busy, he said. Part of that is Im in charge of all the scheduling of the patrol officers. Then there are his other duties, which include making sure everybody stays up-todate on training requirements, managing department grants, assisting with calls and much more. I handle all the complaints for the entire department and I assist the chief in anything that he needs to do, Breci said. Almost every day, were going to meetings. Breci has been a captain at the JCPD since 2005, so hes no stranger to administrative work. He also has plenty of experience in law enforcement. Breci landed his first job in the field in 1973 in Columbia, S.C. By 1986, he had joined the Army and worked as a military

police investigator at Fort Riley. After leaving the Army, he worked for a period at the JCPD, then moved on to several other jobs in Kansas. From 2001 to 2005, Breci taught at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in Hutchinson before returning to Junction City. Though Brecis current ranking requires he spend more time inside, he still tries to get out for an afternoon patrol when possible. Some days, you just dont leave the building, he said. When it comes to major calls, such as homicides, Breci sometimes responds. Other times, his lieutenant in charge lets him know everythings under control. Take for example the Jan. 20 incident during which a Fort Riley soldier received a gunshot wound to the leg. Breci wasnt one of the JCPD officers to respond because the lieutenant in charge contacted him to say the necessary units were on scene. Its important for the watch commander, the highest-ranking officer on duty, to know how many officers are needed and whether enough officers remain to respond to other calls.

Ready for any safety challenge

Jackson has seen much change in his 25 years in Fire, EMS services
By Gail Parsons
m.editor@thedailyunion.net

A house fire one day, a multi-vehicle accident the next, maybe a heart attack victim the next day, or possibly all of those and more packed into one day. The men and women of the Junction City Fire Department dont know what each day will hold, but when they arrive for their 24-hour shift, they are ready for anything. When they are not responding to an emergency, they are preparing to respond. Capt. Matt Jackson said a typical schedule at can be interrupted at any given time when the emergency tone is sounded to send them anywhere in the county. But if the morning is quiet, they start with a meeting where such information as their cleaning assignments are given. Somebody cleans the bathroom, somebody cleans the bedrooms, vacuums the carpets, we have what we call the kitchen cop who is in charge of the kitchen, Jackson said. That (meeting) evolves into the equipment youre assigned to. A recent morning at Fire Station Two there were no emergency calls, giving the staff ample time to clean the station and examine the trucks to ensure that all the tools operate and all the equipment is where it should be. The lieutenant drives the engine, so that is his assignment every shift, that never changes, he said. The rest of the staff is rotated through the responsibilities to keep everyone trained properly and to prevent burnout. Each day is devoted to a specific task Tuesday is truck day, they inspect Engine 20 and go through all the fire apparatus. Wednesday is EMS day when all the medical units get a top to bottom inspection and

cleaning. Everything comes out of every compartment, everything gets wiped down. They get cleaned out every day, but this is the deep cleaning, Jackson said. Thursday is training day, and Friday is station maintenance day. Provided there hasnt been an emergency call, by 10:30 they have usually completed all of the mundane cleaning and equipment checks. They then move into allotted time for physical fitness. Everyone is required to get some physical fitness, Jackson said. Following lunch theres training and the captains perform building inspections in town. Around 4:30, they are on downtime, they watch TV, use computers, work out, whatever they want as long as they are ready to respond immediately to a call anywhere in the county.

Improving Emergency Service

ferent than 25 years ago. Just one person, or two, could not perform all that were doing. Were putting in airways, getting IVs started, that all requires manpower and hands on, he said. Changes in society have also required changes in the way they approach an EMS call. When he became an EMT, it was seldom that he would go to a call where the patient was 250 pounds or more. Today, that is common. In these cases, more personnel are needed to tend to the patient. On the fire side of the house technology has improved to allow firefighters the ability to go into a structure fire and stay in longer, The downside is the risk of getting too far in, Jackson said. The new construction that has exploded around Junction City over the past several years may also prove to be an issue in the future. Light weight construction burns faster. The fire is going to double in size every minute and a half, Jackson said. In Junction City, all this new construction, in 20 years it wont be new. The lightweight construction is not as solid as the homes built several decades ago, but on the flip side building codes have improved fire prevention. He anticipates the challenges of meeting the needs for fighting fires in lightweight construction to be similar to the challenges he faced early in his career when Junction City had 37 trailer parks. Part of the departments continued training includes training on building construction. When we do training on light weight construction, whether it is trusses or laminated beams, it is more of a building construction science class, he said. Its about understanding how the fire progresses. It will progress faster than a house built in 30s or 20s. Jackson said the department continues to train in all areas and continuously look toward new ways to provide services that could be needed in Geary County. One area that will be new training is water rescue, which some of the personnel will travel to Wisconsin for in March.

Working in intensive care unit has ups, downs

work the nurses did, and realized he wanted to help people in that way. I really enjoyed seeing what they were doing, he said. While he has had a range of nursing experiences, he finds his work in the ICU rewarding because he can focus his attention on just a few patients. I like being involved with the families, anything they need we take care, he said.

Seldom a boring day

n the Intensive Care Unit at Geary Community Hospital, staff says its feast of famine.
They have rooms for six patients and at times every room has a patient, but other days its quiet. The night shift staff includes Mark Leonard, RN and Lois Henderson, RN BSN. The two bring about 50 combined years of nursing experience to the patients who are admitted to their unit. Leonard, a Junction City native, was born in Geary Countys old hospital on Ash Street, and has spent his 15-year career at GCH. Hendersons career started when she was 16 working summers and over holiday breaks as a CNA in her hometown of Hoxie, in Northwest Kansas. I always wanted to be a nurse, she said. I wanted to take care of people. I really had a deep interest in biology and a real deep interest just in taking care of people. Following her dream she graduated in 1979, and started a 35-year career in nursing that has included work-

ing in several nursing positions around the country. My first job was in Lubbock, Texas, I was making $6.95 an hour, at that time that was really good money, she said. Marrying into the Air Force led her to move eight times in 10 years including a stint in England, where she was licensed to work, but

didnt because she would have ended up paying her entire 90 pounds a month salary to childcare. Eventually she came back stateside where she worked as a traveling nurse for awhile and finished her BSN degree, a goal she worked toward for several years. Five years ago, she came to Junction City.

Here she met Leonard as both a coworker and a patient of his when she had a stroke. Being a Junction City native, Leonard has seen several people he knows come through the hospital. Sometimes it can be a little unnerving. It can be difficult when sometimes things dont turn

out the way you expect them to with a patient, he said. As I get older I see these people who are similar to my age and they get pretty sick. He got started in nursing partly because of some his cousins who are in the medical field, but also after working in a group home for the mentally disabled patients. He was impressed with the

Leonard likes the excitement of not knowing what the day will hold. Its always different and always changing. We can have something planned and by morning time well be doing something completely different than what we thought we would be doing, he said. There is consistency when it comes to the basic of the job. The crash cart gets checked daily, narcotics are counted, and reports are reviewed. We have a room checklist, we make sure everything is set up, we check all the drawers to make sure we have all the equipment, we check the refrigerators for patient food and medication

No time for lunch for this soldier

By Gail Parsons
m.editor@thedailyunion.net

FORT RILEY Theres no such thing as a typical day for Capt. Johanna Miller. She has a schedule penned out on a whiteboard in her office. Its right next to the door, across from her desk, where she sees it every day all day. Whats missing from the schedule is a time slot to handle the unexpected. For example on one of the coldest days of the year, a generator went out hampering a training simulation that was underway. As company commander of the First Infantry Divisions Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion Intel and Sustainment Company, it is her responsibility to ensure that all systems for the company are in working order. This glitch was relatively easy to fix. The generator froze up, we had a generator mechanic come out and were good as new, she said after visiting with soldiers in her command that were working in a small compound surrounded by Concertina wire. The soldiers under her command currently are training for the upcoming National Training Center. In a sense they are training for training, but having the opportunity to conduct a trial run before leaving for NTC allows them to see what needs to be modified. The Intelligence and Sustainment Company provides logistical, administrative, and training support to the 1st Infantry Division Staff in order to ensure support to Fort Riley, the 1st Infantry Divisions Brigades, and subordinate units, Miller explained. With the unexpected aside, Millers day typically begins at 4:15 a.m. with a trip to the gym with her husband and does her own physical training before joining her company at 6:30 for PT. After PT, most of the morning is dedicated to meetings and a variety of administrative work. Among the administrative work is inventory of the companys $30 million worth of equipment. Over the lunchtime, she has several tasks that have little to do with food. Miller will frequently use this time to head out to where her troops, which she affectionately calls her kids, are working and training. These visits are not just to ensure the mission is being accomplished, but she shows a genuine concern and interest in the soldiers and their families. We had four babies born in the last two weeks, she said. After lunch there are maintenance meetings and meetings with her team, which she credits as highly skilled and knowledgeable that have succeeded in putting into place the processes and foundations that are needed to

Capt. Johanna C. Miller, Intelligence and Sustainment Company, Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 1st Inf. ensure the work is completed with efficiency, leaving her in the position to supervise, rather than build new foundations. of the Army I hadnt seen before, she said. She enlisted in December 2002 and started basic training the following month. Over the next two years she attended the Defense Language Institute and completed the Human Intelligence Collector Course. Knowing that she wanted to be full-time Army and become an officer, she then attended college majoring in Global Strategic studies. I have known I wanted to be a commander since I joined the Army, she said. She experienced the responsibility of being enlisted, but said she has always had pride in her work and wanted to be a leader. The unit that she now has the honor to command is a little unique. At least one fourth of the 230 soldiers are senior NCOs or senior officers. For some young captains, that could be intimidating, but her history with the Army, her confidence in herself and having experienced mentors has helped her take the reins. What it comes down to is your relationship with them and respect, she said. They allow me to make my mis-

Maj. Martin L. ODonnell/1st Inf. Div.

Some changes that Miller has seen in the Army go back to her childhood memories of growing up as an Army Brat. Since she joined, the Army made the switch from the Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) to the Army Combat Uniform (ACU). Had she not grown up with the Army she might never had noticed one little nuance. They smell different I remember the smell of the uniform on my dad, the BDU has a distinctive smell, she said. That is something few soldiers might recognize, but what they will see are some of the changes that affect them personally. After a decade of war, a drawdown of troops requires a drawdown of staffing. Officers today have a new evaluation system, one in which each individual is evaluated on premise of whether they deserve to stay in the Army. They will look at our evaluations, where we are, what weve done, she said. It comes down to do you deserve to stay in the Army? Yes, its scary but I let my record speak for itself. The new evaluation system is a back to basics concept. Now that we are back from war we are able to focus on our standards differently now we are getting that time to focus more readily on the standards, she said. My biggest thing is in the Army you are as important as you want to be, she said. If you want to take a step forward, you just have to say it. It is also good to remember that in the Army its not always about where you want to be but where the Army needs you and your skill sets.

An Ever-Changing Army

Family Tradition

Johanna Miller has been stationed at Fort Riley since April 2012 it was from here that she was deployed to Afghanistan. But this isnt her first time at this post. She was born here when her father CPT Dan Davis, an Army Aviator, served with the1-4 Calvary Squadron and worked as the Squadron S1. Her grandfather was also stationed at Fort Riley where he served with the Adjutant General Corps. When she made the decision to follow in the footsteps of her father, who retired in 2005 and now works for United States Strategic Command; her uncle, who is a retired colonel; and her grandfather, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Cameron Davis who retired in 1982; she started by joining the National Guard, which she said was a good foundation for her to begin her career. It opened my eyes to part

have the biggest and the best of everything, but what weve got, we use to our advantage. For the school, that small size is a strength and a weakness. Our sense of family here is wonderful, Dinsmore said. But at the same time, theres not another high school English teacher she can receive advice from. That can be a little frustrating at times, Dinsmore said. In the case of size, the good outweighs the bad. Technology is also changing the educational landscape. These kids live in a digital world and we need to use that to our advantage, Dinsmore said. I think more and more schools are catching on to that and using the tools the kids already have. Some of those tools include smartphones and tablets. Dinsmore said certain phone applications could be used in classroom instruction. Its a different world, Dinsmore said. I grew up typing my papers on a typewriter. That digital world can also interfere when it comes to writing. Dinsmore said its a process of writing and rewriting. With a part of that digital world, their attention is every which way, Dinsmore said. Its sometimes hard to get their energy focused on writing and be critical of their own work is a challenge. Despite the alterations and trials that come with education, teachers like Dinsmore continue to focus on making sure students are prepared for the world outside the classroom. She one of those enthusiastic teachers thats not going to sit at her desk, Assistant Principal Shawn Augustine said. Shes up getting everybody engaged.

She wants that same passion for the subject to rub off on the students in her class. I hope thats infectious, Dinsmore said. You have to keep things changing and different. If you like it hopefully that transfers over to them. Her high school English teacher Lenora Miles did the same thing. Similar to her recent lesson about Twain, Miles made Romeo and Juliet, more understandable for Dinsmore years ago. She really inspired me as a student, Dinsmore said. To this day, I think about that. NURSES
Continued from Page 5D
to make sure they are all in range, Leonard said. Visiting hours in the ICU end at 8:30 p.m. Henderson said when she comes on shift she likes doing a brief assessment of the patients, but will back off and let families have time with their loved ones. Throughout the night there are hourly checks on the patients, making sure IVs are correct, turning the patients every two hours, ensuring their rhythms havent changed. And every two hours performing oral health care, which Henderson said is vital to prevent problems.

Some things will never change

Without question, advancements in health care and changes in regulations

since Henderson and Leonard started their careers have been tremendous. But, the one underlying part of the job, the reason they entered and stayed in the field will never change. In the future, I am sure it will be more and more technology, Leonard said. What will not change is the interpersonal relationships with the patients. The manner in which they receive their information from the doctors that dictates what the treatment schedule for the patients is different. Gone are the days that a doctor handwrote the information on the charts. Today, a doctor can sit in his home and change a patients orders. Henderson said theres benefit to the computer charting, but nurses need to be vigilant. They still need to know enough to question the computer.

The biggest change since I started is the computerized charting. People who havent grown up with computers, like me, its been a difficult adjustment, she said. The whole plan of care is on computer, the computer generates exactly what they are supposed to be doing for the patient. But computers can be wrong and they information that it gives out is based on what was manually put in just because it is computerized doesnt make it foolproof. We are very scared of that, Henderson said. You have to make sure you are doing it right. Anything that doesnt look right, you have to question it. She and Leonard agreed that is a factor in nursing that will never go away, but as new generations of nurses come up behind them, they realize they manner that the computer technology is

approached is different. They will need the same level of knowledge and be able to pick up on inconsistencies. If something doesnt seem right you have to call the doctor. There is always time for that, Leonard said. The technology has also led to changes in patient treatment. Treatment for any illnesses, disease, and injuries are much improved over the past few decades. But that two has its pros and cons. We have the technology to do the things that we couldnt do before. The antibiotics are stronger, the drugs are stronger. We can get the treatment they need to have a productive life, Henderson said. Sometimes that is good, sometimes its not, sometimes the outcome is not quite what you wanted, sometimes they dont end up having the (quality of) life you hope they would.

She sees these changes making health care in the future very different. Specifically she expects a decrease in hospital stays. It already has decreased. Surgical procedures are not as invasive as they used to be. Whereas a procedure such as an appendectomy required a multi-day stay in the hospital a few years ago, today a patient might be out the same day. I see a lot of (medical treatment) going away from the hospital environment, Henderson said. We will still have a lot of long-term patients, but not like it used to be. As important as it is for nurses to keep up with the changes in medications, procedures, and medical technology, they also need to be cognizant of the continuous changes in insurance and governmental regulations. Its a part of the job that

Henderson indicated isnt her favorite. With all this government regulations we dont get to spend as much time at bedside with the patient as we would like to, she said. Organizations have been forced to become more like businesses its a business and a game. But she also realizes that the paperwork and documentation is vitally important. Without doing it right, the hospital will not get the insurance reimbursement that is needed. Leonard recognizes the changes as well and knows that learning is a continuous process. I think about the technology, all these changes pretty exciting, you never know what we will be doing (in the future), he said.

The Army also approaches the separation of a soldier from active duty differently than in years past. There is a more intensive program in place to aid soldiers making the transition from military to civilian life. The Army wants every soldier to succeed, no matter if they are getting out of the Army or staying in. We had programs like the Army Career Alumni Program, when my Father was in, but now we have even more opportunities like Army Troops to Teachers, the opportunity to obtain professional training certifications, Transition Assistance Program, and Partnership for Youth Success, she said. Part of her job, a part that she enjoys, is to help soldiers work their way through that transition, or help them find ways to advance their military careers. The biggest thing, I think, is to keep fresh in your mind what you want to do, to keep your priorities straight, she said.

Did you know?

The Divisions history begins in 1917 when General John Blackjack Pershing arrived in France with the First American Expeditionary Force. The Fighting First led the way for American troops in World War I. Names like Cantigny, Soissons, St. Mihiel and the Argonne Forest tell the story of the gallantry of the soldiers of the 1st Infantry Division, now wearing the famous Big Red One patch on their left shoulder. During World War II, the 1st Infantry Division was the first to reach England, the first to fight the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, the first on the beaches of Normandy in D-Day and the first to capture a major German City Aachen. The 1st Infantry Division remained in Germany until 1955, first as occupation troops, then as partners with the new Germany in NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. In 1955, the Big Red One redeployed to Fort Riley. In the summer of 1965, the Big Red One was the first division called to fight in Vietnam. For nearly five years, its soldiers battled the enemy while carrying out programs to aid the people of South Vietnam. In April 1970, the colors of the 1st Infantry Division returned to Fort Riley.

Home again, the Big Red One became a dual based division with its 3rd Brigade in West Germany. As part of the BRAC changes, the Division cased its colors in Germany July 7, 2006. The 1st Inf. Div. conducted a transfer of authority with the 24th Inf. Div. on Aug. 1, 2006, assuming command and control of Fort Riley. The Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, the first of its kind in the new modular division headquarters structure, deployed to United States Division South to assume control of the ongoing United States Operations in the southern part of Iraq. The DHHB unit replaced the 34th Infantry Division Red Bulls, and was relieved by the 36th Infantry Division Arrowhead. The Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion uncased its colors back home at Fort Riley, March, 2013.
