TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION You need more than water for a bath. Most family bathrooms contain an arsenal of soaps and emollients, lotions, shampoos, and conditioners to combat grime and honor the body. A bath without oil is still unthinkable. No wonder early Christians used lavish amounts of oil to paint the skin of people drawn dripping wet from the baptismal font on Easter. There were two oils used in baptism long ago. Oil of exorcism protected candidates from evil spirits; it strengthened their resolve and purified their purposes. The second oil, slathered over them after baptisms bath, sealed them, making them like Christ, the anointed one, the priest, the prophet, the king. Chrism has always had a powerful odor; rich resinous perfumes are stirred in before it is consecrated. As the newly baptized were embraced by new brothers and sisters in Christ, the scent permeated the hall of Eucharist, a sign of our connection to Christ and to one another. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Conference of Illinois is offering a 91-day program of daily, emailed readings of the Social Teaching of the Church. This is the perfect opportunity to learn about what Pope Francis has been focusing on since his election last March. Participants will receive a daily email featuring a small section of the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church usually just a few paragraphs beginning on Ash Wednesday (March 5) and continuing through June 8. Go to www.ilcatholic.org and click on the 91 days banner to learn more and sign up. The readings will be offered in both English and Spanish.

91 Days The Catholic

THE FABLE OF THE PORCUPINES It was the coldest winter ever. Many animals died because of the cold. The porcupines, realizing the situation, decided to group together to keep warm. This way they covered and protected themselves, but the quills of each one wounded their closest companions. After awhile, they decided to distance themselves one from the other and they began to die, alone and frozen. So, they had to make a choice: accept the quills of their companions or disappear from the Earth. Wisely, they decided to get back together and work it out. They learned to live with the little wounds caused by their close relationship in order to stay warm and survive. Moral of the Story: The best relationship is not the one that brings together perfect people, but when each individual learns to live with the imperfections of others and can admire the other persons good qualities. The 2014 Mass Book is Open. Please stop at the
parish office (8000 S. Linder) if you would like to reserve Masses for your loved ones. Parish office hours: Monday - Friday 8:30 am to 8:30 pm Saturday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Closed Sundays

This quote from Matthew 9:37-38 is especially true in the St. Albert the Great Religious Education program. Each year our numbers continue to grow. Next year in the 2014/2015 school year we expect continued growth in our CCD program. We fully anticipate four first grade classes, four second grade classes, and possibly four seventh grade classes, and four eighth grade classes. In addition we will be adding a CCD kindergarten class, an additional special Sacrament class, and a basic Catholicism class. We will also be going to a weekly program, for the school year 2014/2015 we will meet weekly with the last week of the month being off. The following year in 2015/2016 CCD will meet weekly. If you have a desire to share your faith, to teach kids about Jesus please consider becoming a CCD teacher. If maybe at one time you did teach CCD, is God calling you back? You are more than welcome to return. We will train new CCD teachers. If you are interested we would like you to start this year as soon as possible so you can observe other teachers in their classrooms. Fill out the form below and drop it in the offertory basket or drop it off at the parish office, or during the week to the CCD office in the school. If you want more information or would like to talk with me directly please call me at 708 636-0406. Thank you for your consideration and may God continue to bless and keep you.
