HOT WORK PROCEDURES/ PERMITS

The purpose of this procedure is to instruct ship staff when preparing for and carrying out hot work and to provide guidance on other activities or operations that may be a source of ignition.

Welding Bay a designated area within the engine room, or inside the engine work shop. This area shall be clearly marked, and there shall be no combustible material within the designated Welding Bay. Pump Room for the purpose of this procedure, the ballast pump room and/or deck trunk on vessels with deep-well pumps are considered as a normal cargo pump room, when the ballast pump room and/or the deck trunk is located within the cargo area. 3. RESPONSIBILITY Superintendent Review Hot Work re uests and authori!e or re"ect as appropriate in accordance with this procedure and relevant #$%&'' recommendations. (dvising )leet *anager prior to carr+ing out an+ hot work in cargo pump room, cargo tanks, ballast tanks, fuel tanks on an+ t+pe of tanker. &r, in fuel oil tanks on all other vessels. When responding to the vessel b+ e-mail, a cop+ of the e-mail shall be attached to the original Hot Work Permit. Master ,valuating whether the hot work is necessar+. ,nsuring that hot work is carried out safel+- that the work scope is clearl+ understood b+ the involved parties, and that the responsibilities are clearl+ understood. Approve the Hot Work Permit and countersigning it once hot work is completed.When required by the Hot Work Matrix seeking authori!ation from the "uperintendent as far in advance as possible for each intended hot work operation. This authori!ation is only valid for a maximum period of #$ hours from the start of work. % new Hot Work Permit and authori!ation is required to continue the same work beyond this time. Obtaining acceptance from shore and/or terminal authorities etc. when applicable. Notifying the Superintendent on completion of work as re uired. !t the "aster#s discretion, electronic cameras or $ideo e uipment may be used on deck, and a %ot Work &ermit to this effect shall be issued by the "aster.

Chief Officer or Chief Engineer (as nominated by the Master for the Hot Work operation) ,nsuring that all risks are identified and mitigated before the start of the hot work and that safe conditions are maintained throughout the operation. Completing Section 1 Hazard Identification on the Hot Work Permit. &nsuring that the levels of hydrocarbon gas and oxygen are monitored before during and after the hot work until conditions are deemed safe. Notify the duty deck and engine officers upon start and completion of hot work. Chief Engineer Ensuring that the precautions necessary in the designated welding bay or engine room workshop are in place Officer in Charge of Hot Work Completing Section 2 of the Hot Work Permit. before hot work is started periodically 'every ( hours) and*or following all breaks during the validity of the permit.&nsuring that the operation is suspended and re+ evaluated if, 'entilation to the space is stopped. (onditions noted in the %ot Work &ermit is sub)ect to changes. *f the hot work continues o$er a change of watch, the oncoming officer must countersign the %ot Work &ermit to indicate that all the conditions associated with the hot work are fully $erified, understood, and will be maintained. (ompleting Section + of the %ot Work &ermit on completion of hot work. 4. DESCRIPTION 4.1 Standard Precautions The following precautions are applicable to any hot work, -nsure that the space is gas free. -nsure that ad)acent spaces and tanks are gas free or purged to less than ./$ol hydrocarbons and inerted. On $essels without inert gas, ad)acent tanks must also be gas free. -nsure that the general area is gas free. 0o not perform hot work during cargo loading, discharging and gas freeing operations onboard any tanker. 0o not conduct hot work in any tank that contains oil or oil $apors, during gas freeing operations, or during tank cleaning operations.

0o no perform hot work within port limits unless permission from the port has been gi$en. -nsure that precautions are in place to contain all hot slag, sparks etc. in the immediate work site. ! safety obser$er 1fire watch2 is in attendance to watch for stray sparks / slag and for general safety. !de uate fire fighting e uipment is a$ailable and ready for immediate use. 3or work in the pump room, ensure bilges are clean and gas free. 3or pipework in pumproom Ballast 4ines 5 to be e$acuated and water returned to ballast tank 1$ia Wilden pump or similar2 and if practicable remo$ed to -6 or poopdeck. *f this not possible section to be isolated prior to commencing work. (argo 4ines 5 all to be e$acuated, flushed through to Slop Tanks, section remo$ed, if practicable, or positi$ely isolated with Blanks and thoroughly cleaned. !ny pipe or tank in the hot work area that may be a ha7ard should be positi$ely isolated by blanking off, blinding, plugging or remo$ing spool pieces and blanking off open ends. 4.2 Genera Precautions !or a Desi"nated #e din" Ba$ On vessels where an Engine workshop is not fitted, an area in the engine room approved by the Superintendent must be designated as the welding bay. All normal precautions must be observed when welding in this area. The Hot Work in the &- workshop*.esignated Welding /ay must be completed and verified by the 0hief &ngineer prior to Hot Work in this area.The welding bay should be surrounded by non+combustible blankets or screens to prevent the escape of stray sparks * slag. There should be no possibility that sparks*slag can come into contact with combustible material within or external to the welding bay. 'entilation must be ade uate to pre$ent any build up of fumes during welding etc. !ppropriate fire fighting e uipment such as a fire e8tinguisher or charged hose must be a$ailable in the immediate $icinity. Shielding must be in place to protect others who may enter the area during the hot work from welding flash, sparks, slag etc. The area must be kept tidy and free of any combustible materials. 4.3 %ot #or& Procedure !ote" #or any work on critical e$uipment and systems% the Superintendent must be consulted on a case by case basis &efer to the latest editions of 'S(O)) * the rele+ant Code of Safe Working ,ractices for Merchant Seamen 'f re$uired in the following matri-% submit a re$uest for Hot Work authori.ation to the Superintendent 'f appropriate% include additional information such as a &isk /ssessment

The use of any portable cooking de$ice outside galley and pantry areas is also prohibited. These prohibitions do not include electric kettles and coffee machines used inside the accommodation.
