In a world where staying connected is becoming more and more prominent, many organizations are suggesting going unplugged. Thats an idea thats being adopted by the Family Day event organizers this year. Were doing Family Day Unplugged and its an initiative thats starting in the province to get families to spend more time together, away from the TV and away from the computer, and out and doing things that involve nature, or physical activity, said Tracy Simpson, community services coordinator with the town. People are being asked to put down their devices and head out to take part in one of the ve fun family events planned. The province is asking people to log onto www.fcssaa.org on Feb. 18 and log how many hours you went unplugged. All you need to give is your name, where you live and your age. Each community as a whole will be tracked to see how they compare to other communities in the province. The actual Family Day activities take place on Feb. 17 and this year all groups who host events are working together to bring a full day of activities to the community. Historically weve always had events on Family Day, the Cheadle Lions have been doing their breakfast for years, the HEAL coalition has been doing their Great Skate, said Simpson. So what we did this year is we just wanted to bring everyone to the table so we could share our resources and kind of coordinate our schedules so it is more of a day festival than little activities kind of everywhere. The morning begins with the Cheadle Lions breakfast at the Civic Centre at 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. The Youth Club of Strathmore will host a kids carnival at the same time. The Great Skate starts at noon and there will also be ice shing on the lake with the re department for seniors and kids under the age of 16. Everything on the day is free, you can come and spend the whole day and not spend any money, said Simpson. After the Great Skate and the ice shing the Five for Life coalition is hosting a free family swim at the Aquatic Centre from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. There will also be a draw for a prize pack for those who partake in some of the Family Day activities. At the breakfast you can come and get a passport and then every activity will have a stamp and if you get all your stamps, I think we said three stamps, your name will get entered into a draw and your family can win a prize pack, said Simpson. SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter The Strathmore Lions, and Lions clubs in general, have always been known to be great community supporters. On Jan. 27 the Lions and Aquatic Society were recognized for their support of the Aquatic Centre. In 2013 the Strathmore Lions donated over $80,400 to the centre. The fund helped purchase a timing system and bleachers for the Silver Sharks swim club, a chair lift, score board and starting blocks as well as the installation. Every year the Lions also donate funds for the free Sunday family swims. With the purchase of the timing system, score board, starting blocks and bleachers the Silver Sharks can now host sanctioned swim meets in Strathmore, said Mayor Michael Ell in an address to the Lions on Jan. 27. This is such a great addition to our facility and will help bring more people and more events to our great town. We are proud to hang this plaque in our Aquatic Centre lobby to honour the remarkable contribution of the Strathmore Lions Club. The Lions have been strong nancial supporters of the Aquatic Centre from the beginning. They were instrumental in the construction of the building 11 years ago when the club donated over $50,000 in capital funding. The support has not wavered over the years, and has helped the centre, and its users, continue to have use of the great facility. The Silver Sharks swim club currently has 97 swimmers. They have been around since 2006, and have competed in various competitive and non-competitive meets up to and including the provincial level. The Sharks greatly appreciate the support provided by the Aquatic Society and Lions Club, and could not provide as large of a club as we have today without their support, keeping a large number of Strathmores youth healthy and engaged, said Lloyd Schoepp, president of the Strathmore Silver Sharks club. With the purchase of the new starting blocks, timing system and bleachers, the Aquatic Centre is prepared to meet the needs of the 55+ Senior Games and the Silver Sharks well into the future. The club had participated in, and supported, the bid for the 55 Games, and will continue to do so by sharing the equipment and volunteers for the competition.

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Getting the chance to play with toys as a kid is something many take for granted. Emily Careless and Emily Harrison, Grade 5 students at Westmount School, wanted to do something to make a difference. Upon the suggestion of Associate Principal Dana Graff the girls focused their goal on collecting toy donations. Carelesss mom talked to Associate Principal Dana Graff one day after a parent council meeting and mentioned that Emily had been thinking about doing something special. I talked with her and said this is what you can do and gave them some sheets, sort of planning sheets. She went back and talked with Emily Harrison and those two then decided to come up with this plan. They had about ve plans and I said, well why dont you do this one? said Graff. The girls collected toys from their fellow classmates to donate to the Alberta Childrens Hospital in Calgary. They wrote up a letter to send home to all the parents on Jan. 7, created a PowerPoint presentation to show at a school assembly and made an announcement over the PA system. First we were going to do teddy bears but then the hockey foundation did the teddy bears so we had to change it to toys, said Harrison. The girls had set a goal of collecting 100 items. The Childrens Hospital gave the girls a wish list and by the time they wrapped up collections they had received 190 items. We did get lots of books and we got maybe two or three gift cards, said Careless.

Graff thinks Careless may have been inspired to do something after watching a fellow Westmount school mate shave his head last year. Its neat that were instilling that service-mindedness within kids, cause you dont always get that, said Graff. Were totally blown away by the parental support, all we did is sent a note home and we talked to the kids at the assembly and they made one announcement on the PA system, the number of toys that came in was about 200 and thats great. The girls were both very happy to be able to surpass their goal. They are unsure if they will collect items for donation in the future.

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter A new face is governing things from within the Ag Society ofce. Tracey Foster recently took on the role as the new general manager at the Strathmore and District Agriculture Society, and is in the process of moving to Strathmore. Foster is not new to agriculture or helping with great rodeo events, having worked for the Calgary Stampede previous to this in the Western Events and Agriculture department. The facets of what we do are similar so I think the transition will be a natural one, said Foster. I was looking at relocating to a smaller centre, albeit I loved Calgary, its a busy city and so Im looking forward to being in a smaller community. Its a wonderful opportunity and I am excited to join the Agriculture Society and to be part of the community. Foster ofcially began her new position on Jan. 6, and plans to take some time getting to know how things work here before possibly planning any changes. She plans to get up to speed on all of the different facets of the Ag Society, stating that that the rodeo is a big part of things, but theres also the Celebration of Lights, the proposal to develop an outdoor skating rink, and the high school rodeo in May. I am just trying right now to familiarize myself with all the different components and user groups and then move forward from there, said Foster. Im looking forward to seeing the events through. Down the road theres denitely room to add new events, not to the rodeo itself, outside of the dates

Right now the ice isnt safe for anyone, so were working on some backup plans, but thats the plan as of right now, said Simpson. She is trying to connect with a couple of different groups in town to see about maybe just doing activities in the park, just in case the ice isnt ready. There will be horse-drawn wagon rides, a re pit and live music at Kinsmen Park. Simpson said there will be plenty of things to do, even if you cant go skating that day. If it is chilly out there will be hot chocolate and hot soup available to the park patrons.

Learning life skills through Scouts Canada

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Learning basic survival skills, leadership skills and working with others in a group setting are all things everyone should learn. The 1st Strathmore Kinsmen Scouts Group has been in Strathmore for approximately 20 years, and theyre here to teach those skills. Scouts Canada is a national youth program. What they do is focus on being able to provide a safe, fun environment thats not only goes to the extra curricular but it incorporates educational aspects to it, to allow them to build and develop and grow, said Lonnie Lassu, group commissioner for the 1st Strathmore Scouts. Scouts ultimately develops them into leaders, effective leaders, whether it be as a father gure in the home or in the business place or however that might work. Scouts is a coed group. The only change made since going coed approximately 10 years ago is there must be a mix of female and male leaders to facilitate programs. Parents can enroll their kids into Scouts as early as ve-years-old. The Beaver Colony is for kids ages ve to seven. Because of their age and how they behave its obviously a very energetic and very quick moving program. At that age youre trying to instill more about learning how to share, how to develop a little bit of discipline as far as taking direction and doing something with it, said Lassu. They do have a lot of fun, its a lot of crafts and a lot of games. Next the kids can move into the Cub Pack for ages eight to 10. Here the program changes a little. The kids start working towards their badges and start learning a number of different skills like building a re, knot tying and sewing. Theres dozens of different activities where they work towards getting tested for that and then if they pass they get a badge, said Lassu. Next is the Scouts Troop for 11 to 14-year-olds. Once you get into Scouts level the focus is a lot more on developing life skills and spending time outdoors and spending time in community service. Venturers are next for 14 to 17, and then the programs nish with the Rovers for ages 18 to 26. In Strathmore there is not a Rovers group but Lassu said they would be more than willing and happy to open up a program if there was interest in it. As with any organization volunteers are the base that helps keep things running. Every one of the sections, whether its Beavers, Cubs, Scouts or Venturers theres always a section leader and any number of registered volunteer leaders, said Lassu. The one difference is that with the Venturers, because of their age, because of some of the responsibility that theyre expected to have in the overall program as far as helping facilitate the Scouts. Venturers have an advisor who acts in a similar capacity as a section leader, but they are there more to provide guidance than to lead the group. The Venturers are responsible for their own program. They come up with their own annual plan as far as what types of activities they are going to be involved with, what kind of extra curricular activities they are going to do, whether they are doing overnight camping or hiking, or planning to go to a world jamboree somewhere, whatever it might be, said Lassu. They come up with their plan, they review that with the advisor who will give them some guidance if they think there are areas they need to think of. Lassu was not in Scouts when he was a child, but had always been interested in it. My son as he has been growing up has been showing himself to be very much outdoors oriented as well and really enjoys spending time in group settings and working with other kids, so when he become of age (5) I put him into the Beavers program, said Lassu. At the time 1st Strathmore Scouts was looking for more leaders so he volunteered and hasnt looked back. There is an annual registration fee of $168. The fee goes to help support the Scouts Canada program in funding resources, material and training for volunteer leaders. A small portion also goes to the local resources for buying supplies for crafts or for an event thats being held. Our primary source of funding for our local program comes from fundraising. We do three bottle drives a year and popcorn sales every fall and those events probably bring in 90 per cent of our funding for each year to facilitate our programs and events, said Lassu. If there is anything that requires an adult chaperone for more than a day, then there is a small fee that they would have to pay to be there, usually $25 to $30. Members are also welcome to invite their siblings along on camping trips or eld trips for a nominal fee. All of the Scouts groups meet once a week on Tuesday nights. The Beavers are at the Civic Centre, Cubs in the quonset, and the rest are in the bunkhouse next to the quonset. Volunteers are always needed; Scouts Canada just asks that volunteers have an interest in seeing the program succeed and are able to contribute in a way the helps that children get involved and be able to enjoy the program in a safe manner. Parliament reconvenes
KEVIN SORENsON, M.P., CROWfOOT Parliamentary Report The House of Commons has reconvened in Ottawa and our Conservative governments top priorities will continue to be those that matter most to Canadians: jobs; growth and long-term prosperity. We intend to build on our strong economic record of creating jobs, keeping taxes low, supporting and protecting families, and putting Canada rst. The recent Speech from the Throne outlined our commitments and we will be introducing new legislation that will: open new markets for Canadian goods and services; create a Victims Bill of Rights; further protect our children and communities; and much more. We have been running a productive, hard-working and orderly Parliament that has allowed us to continue to deliver results for all Canadians, including our best legislative performance with 40 bills receiving Royal Assent in 2013. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty has announced that Economic Action Plan 2014, our Governments plan for jobs and opportunities, will be tabled Feb. 11. This includes a great deal of work that I have been doing as Minister of State (Finance). Since, early November last year, Minister Flaherty and I have held several national and local pre-budget roundtable consultations. Additionally, thousands of Canadians answered the invitation to participate in the online pre-budget consultations. As always, I was pleased to see input from constituents in our Crowfoot riding. Canadians shared their experiences and provided recommendations concerning the cost of living and raising a family. Many said they want to ensure Canadians are obtaining the skills and knowledge necessary for the jobs of tomorrow. Canadian businesses provided their input on how our government can further help businesses grow and hire new employees. All of these ideas have been helpful and constructive in supporting a stable environment in which investment and trade ourish. Minister Flaherty and I met Jan. 27 with Canadas leading private sector economists. They agreed that the average forecast from private sector economists is a reasonable basis for scal planning for Economic Action Plan 2014. We have the federal government on track to balance the federal budget in 2015, while continuing with our low-tax plan to create jobs, growth and long-term prosperity. We continue to nd additional savings and reductions in the expenditure
of taxpayers dollars. Our Conservative governments responsible and disciplined use of taxpayers dollars is expected to yield a surplus of just under $4 billion in 201516. I am very pleased that the average Canadian family of four now pays nearly $3,400 less in taxes than in 2006. Ongoing global uncertainty and recent examples of the consequences of signicant decits in other countries make it even more important for Canada to remain focused on balanced budgets. Therefore, our government will not entertain the traditional laundry list of new spending touted by the New Democratic Party and Liberal Party. Their lists have been sent with no regard to their actual costs to taxpayers or their impact on the long-term state of Canadas nances. Our government will remain focused on supporting job creation and helping grow the economy by keeping taxes low. Groundhog Day and Moonshine

PAT FULE Fule for Thought If youre reading this, well, Im still a bit surprised! The column has been going for about 2.5 years, and no ones tried to kill me, or get the paper cancelled! Oh sure, I may have hurt some curlers feelings that one time, but hey, its not you, its the sport, I have trouble with. Anyway, on Monday was our dogs 14th birthday! He has been a great family dog, and although a bit slower, deaf, and covered with gross warts, hes still the best. Sunday was Groundhog Day, the chance for a small rodent to become a trusted weather reporter. Supposedly, if he sees his shadow, its supposed to scare him back into his house (cave), and that means six more weeks of winter. From what Ive read, he did see his shadow, so we get another six fun-lled weeks of winter! I dont know if Brodie saw his shadow, as hed actually have to move and look, to see anything! He has denitely learned to conserve his energy! He did go on a walk to the mailbox, but that pretty much did him in for the Super Bowl. Its got to be a great life if youre a dog on Super Bowl Sunday. There are so many treats, and stuff gets handed to him all through the game! I read a brief post yesterday about Groundhog Day in the States. One guy wrote: he saw his shadow. Six more weeks of winter. I shot him. I hate bad news. Now that seems wrong to shoot the messenger. Its not the vermins fault if he sees that shadow, it just happens. I saw my shadow yesterday, too. It scared me, as well, and now I know that means six weeks of dieting. Yes, like many others in the New Year and heading into spring, I struggle to get back to my ghting weight. Of course, lately, my ghting weight is getting dangerously close to a SUMO ghters weight! In order for any of us to trim down, its going to take solid changes in our lifestyles. The night before Groundhog Day, for example, I found myself watching a reality show called Moonshiners. This is a show about modern moonshiners secretly making their own whiskey, bottling it, and shipping it to distributors while the police are searching for them. I felt a little guilty, because I was drinking a whiskey/Coke while they were ghting to stay ahead of the law! This will have to be one of the lifestyle changes I make less frosty beverages! As I watched the show, though, I pictured myself as one of them: toothless, overalls with no shirt, maybe a big wad of chew in my mouth, and having closed captioning under whatever I say! These guys make the shine in the woods, camouage it, and when its ready, they ll plastic milk jugs to deliver it. I guess this is where NASCAR got its birth, because they talked about having to have the fastest cars to out run the law. I wondered though, if they had it right. Wouldnt stealth be a better way to transport illegal moonshine? This moonshiner drove a Black 1970s a Black Le Mans with a huge engine that actually roared! I actually read that 40 per cent of Americans drive white or silver vehicles. So if youre a smart moonshiner, why not pick a vehicle that blends in more? Heres where I would have an advantage, if I was a moonshiner. We have a 10-yearold silver Chrysler mini-van. There are tons of these vehicles scooting around the country. What Id do is use that as my moonshine runnin vehicle, and Id hire an older person, maybe someone in their early 80s (better yet, an 80 something relative). What kind of Smoky would pull over that driver driving the speed limit, loaded down with a huge amount of illegal booze? I mean, even if my grandma was pulled over, whos going to throw her in jail? All shed have to say, is she wondered why there were so many jars of vinegar in the back of the van! Not that Id ever use my grandma (dont even have one), but Debs mom on the other hand, would be perfect. Many of you know Pat shes early 70s, cheerful, drives well - shed be the perfect mule! Mule - delivery person for illegal merchandise or contraband. I can picture it now, shed be haulin my moonshine in our silver van, Kenny riding shotgun, telling her shes going the wrong way, the GPS directing them to the drop-off point! I think it might be a perfect plan. Now, Ill just have to buy some corn, pots, and tubing, and Ill be able to supplement my income! I wonder if the in-laws are free in six weeks!

Bringing peace to the Middle East

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor Living in a country like Canada, where people from many nations work and live together under one ag, Canadians can sometimes nd the peace talks featured on the news in countries like Israel and Palestine puzzling. Mae Elise Cannon, the Senior Director of Advocacy & Outreach in the Middle East-World Vision USA, recently had the opportunity to share a tour of the Holy Land with 20 Evangelical Covenant church pastors from North America. The experience so impacted these pastors, they wanted World Vision to bring the Hope for the Holy Land Tour to covenant churches across western Canada. The purpose of the Hope for the Holy Land tour is to mobilize a movement that is truly pro-Israeli, pro-Palestinian, propeace, pro-justice and as Christians, ultimately pro-Jesus. Our Christian heritage provokes a desire for peace and justice in the Holy Land, the birthplace of our faith, said Cannon. For many Christians, a neglected element of our faith is understanding the role we play, as peace makers and reconcilers in the midst of conict. Along with Cannon, the tour brings two main speakers, Sahar Vardi and Charlie Abou Saada, who have both lived in the Holy Land, but understand perspectives from the opposite sides of the uctuating border conict. Vardi is currently the Israeli Program Director for the American Friends Service Committee, which focuses on demilitarization, equal rights programs and peace initiatives in the region. In 2010, Vardi launched human rights and non-violence education programs at universities in Israel. Her passion started as early as the age 14, when she began to work in peace organizations that try to break down destructive barriers between the two nations. Saada has been with the World Vision Jerusalem/West Bank/ Gaza ofce since February 2009, in the role of Church Relations Coordinator. He leads local and international conferences and accompanies pilgrims visiting the Holy Land. He sends out messages of life-changing, courageous life journeys. Stories where even past Palestinian Fatah freedom ghters lay down arms and hatred to embrace Christ, leading them to see ways to peaceful solutions with those they formerly believed were life-long enemies. We believe Christians in the Holy Land have a unique role to play in the pursuit of peace. While Christian population in the region is declining, Christians are still signicant providers of social services and education in the Palestinian territories, promoting peace and reconciliation between Muslims and Jews, and partnering with Muslims in supporting non-violent activism. We believe in supporting Palestinian and Israeli Christians, as they pursue a radical calling from the Prince of Peace, said Cannon. More than sixty years of conict have had an especially destructive effect in the West Bank and Gaza. Infrastructure and basic services such as water, education, and healthcare are often in short supply in Palestinian communities. In armed conict, it is always the most vulnerable, particularly children, who suffer most. Both Palestinian and Israeli children have the right to live in safety; free from violence, fear and want. Canon believes education and support from Christians world-wide will make a difference. She encourages people to get engaged by reading and learning more about realities on the ground and the challenges affecting both the Israeli and Palestinian communities. She knows education can help give a more holistic understanding of realities affecting both communities. Israelis fear for their security and experience threats such as rocket re toward Israel from Gaza. Palestinians live under the daily reality of military control which limits mobility, challenges economic stability, and causes other lifestyle hardships. It is important for North Americans to better understand what life is like in the Holy Land, so that we can respond and constructively engage, said Cannon. The tour comes to Strathmore at the Hope Covenant Church at 7 p.m. on Feb. 5. But engagement doesnt stop at just listening. Canadians are called to action through prayer, by joining, www.prayer4holyland.org, nancial contributions can be made to World Vision to reduce poverty in West Bank and Gaza areas and sponsorship of a child, which gives access to basic life sustaining resources including water, education, health care, and economic stability. See www. worldvision.ca for details. Cannon also encouraged people to write letters to politicians of all political parties, in support of active efforts toward peace in the region. We believe globally-minded Christians, who are committed to compassion and justice, can bring hope to broken communities throughout the world even in Israel and Palestine, said Cannon.

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor Concerns were brought up in Wheatland Council on Jan. 21 that some of our most fragile elders with mobility problems have to wait extended lengths of time for a return ride home from the hospital, after being discharged in evening hours. They may be brought in by ambulance, but they cant return home in one. During daytime hours, the Strathmore and District Handi-bus Association does an exceptional job of meeting all the needs of the areas elderly, but after 5 p.m. they cannot provide service. They were asked by Strathmore hospital administrative staff if they could offer standby services from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. every day of the week, but funding is an issue as staff and overhead costs need to be paid. The Handi-bus currently gets all their funding from donations and grants. Alberta Health Services (AHS) was contacted, but funding is not available for any services outside Alberta Health approved healthcare facilities. They issued this statement to inquiries of what could be done. The Inter-facility Transfer Program in Calgary is a eet of ambulances responsible for transferring acute care patients in the Calgary Zone between Alberta Health-approved healthcare facilities. In Strathmore, AHS contracts EMS services to the Wheatland and District Emergency Medical Services Association (WADEMSA). WADEMSA receives funding from AHS to respond to emergency calls and perform acute care inter-facility transfers, like in Calgary. If a patient discharged from emergency care at the Strathmore Hospital cant make travel arrangements, Alberta Health Services staff will help the patient get home safely. In Strathmore, that includes making them an appointment with the Handi-bus, contacting a family member or friend, or calling them a taxi. Alberta Health Services constantly monitors the EMS system, to ensure it is using the right resources at the right time. It balances the need for emergency medical services with requests for non-urgent transfers to make sure all patients receive the care they need. Patients being transferred between health care facilities are transported via ambulance that has not changed. But, its important to remember that long-term care residents are just that; residents, not patients. Sagewood is a place of residence, not a hospital. AHS understands the importance of ensuring patients remain safe and healthy during, and after their care. When a patient is deemed well and healthy enough to be discharged from care at the Strathmore Hospital, staff look at all options available to help them return home safely. Again, problems arise if the family has no van or werent available. Even helping a somewhat healthy person into a car can be difcult, but add injuries or size and the odds go up that the one lifting, or being lifted, will sustain an injury. The other options left to clients are staying in hospital overnight, taking a taxi or taking to the sidewalk. One community member related a story where the family member was told by hospital staff to walk the patient home, indicating that the home isnt far.just wheel her down there. In December 2013, Minister Fred Horne was reported by the Vulcan Advocate to say the province is committed to looking at this issue. AHS Inter-facility transfers (IFT) are about 40 per cent of the provinces ambulance usage. Chief Administrative Ofcer Shirley Reinhart of Wheatland Lodge said they have not had any current problems, but they havent had any afterhour emergencies of late either. She said Wheatland Lodge would never leave patients sitting out in the cold and would nd some way to get them back to the lodge. Sagewood spokesman Ali Shivji, AgeCare Chief Operating Ofcer, said that their facilities and nursing staff make sure all transportation arrangements are made for clients needing medical care. While Sagewood is a private facility, they do have agreements with Alberta Health Services for case work and assessment of long term clients and those clients are fully covered under Alberta Health Care. Shivji was under the impression that the long term care patients, due to their unique arrangements with Alberta Health Services, would be transported to and from the hospital. Rob Witty of Wheatland and District Emergency Medical Services Association said they have never taken patients back to their homes, and it isnt part of the current ambulance policy; there may be some exceptions worked out for those clients grandfathered over from the extended care unit of the hospital and now living in Sagewood. However, he qualied there was no funding for return transportation on a regular basis, as funding would need to be in place before transportation could be offered. Martin DePueter, owner of two cab companies in Strathmore, may have a solution by about May of this year. He is considering purchasing a van to accommodate pick-up of the elderly or handicapped with medical need and those in wheel chairs. It will be available to service nighttime coverage. He is waiting to clear licensing mechanisms. For now, funding seems to be the underlying issue, and the bottom line is that some kind of service may be in the works, but until then people need to be aware their loved ones may have to shelter in hospital waiting areas until someone can pick them up, or wait until morning when rides arrive.

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter The Strathmore Legion is looking to see some fresh blood come through their doors. The Legion is currently under new management, and has a new president Gary Horne. Judy Stephenson will be coming back as the bar supervisor and Jan Bennett is running things in the kitchen. Were now working towards improving some of the functions and things for the coming year. We also want to try and welcome all members, families and guests, said Horne. We want to try and make it more welcoming to everyone. Member of the Legion or not, people are being encouraged to stop by and grab lunch or dinner one day. Or if youre not in the mood to eat, you could also head over and play on one of the new pool tables or dartboards. Theres also crib, a couple of TVs and music. There is a general meeting held the third Tuesday of Every month at 7:30 p.m. All members are welcome to come along and share their ideas on how the Legion can improve. Guests are welcome to make suggestions also, and these can be left with the bar staff for the attention of the executive committee, said Horne. Every day there is a soup and sandwich special. There is a Friday night special buffet from the kitchen, and there are talks of adding a special Thursday lunch, and an English afternoon tea once a month. The Legion also offers catering for weddings, and every Friday and Saturday there are meat draws and 50/50 draws. A lot of people believe that the Legion is a members only place, and thats just not the case. I want people to know they can come in there without having to be a member, said Horne. The Legion is a great place to connect with friends and fellow community members. The food is good and the price is easy on everyones pocketbooks. It will be a very welcoming and nice place to be in the next few weeks, said Horne. (We) look forward to seeing you in the Legion.

Rosebud chef says farewell with Valentines Day feast

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER Times Contributor Rosebud Centre of the Arts invites couples to come celebrate Valentines Day, Feb. 14 - 15. This year, Valentines Day guests will also say good-bye to Pat Murphy, the chef whos fed Rosebud guests and patrons for 17 years. Murphys farewell act is to prepare the four-course Valentines Day Dinner. Ever since Rosebud began inviting guests to join them for Valentines Day, Executive Director of Rosebud Centre of the Arts (RCA) Adam Furfaro says the events have sold out. These weekends have grown along with the restaurant and catering facility, to the point that, this year, Murphy will feed three sittings at the Valentines Day supper. Many patrons who come for Valentines Day also come to Rosebud theatre events, but on those occasions, They dont get the details of what we do, Furfaro says. This weekend enables them to look behind the curtain a little bit, and get the backstage tour, tour our facilities. Guests at Valentines Day 2014 will again enjoy backstage theatre access, a historical walking tour, theatre sports games, a campre with traditional treats, and a cooking class with Rosebuds chefs. The weekend also features gourmet coffee-tasting and wine-tasting, and, of course, Valentines Dinner prepared by Executive Chef Pat Murphy. On Saturday night, theres also a buffet dinner and concert with Lewis and Royal, Rosebud-based musicians who perform all over Alberta. And, for this weekend, four Rosebud bed-and-breakfasts will open to accommodate guests. Patrons who cant attend the whole weekend can purchase separate tickets for the Valentines Dinner and the Lewis and Royal buffet and concert. For many guests, the planned activities are a platform for something even more special. One of the biggest things that they enjoy is the camaraderie and the fellowship, Furfaro says. These folks who came last year are, a lot of them, coming back this year in anticipation of seeing each other. They became friends over the course of the weekend, because they had so many other great things to do. One of the special friends theyll see, and say good-bye to, is their chef Pat Murphy. Its going to be (Murphys) big last meal, so I think hes probably going to go out with a little bit of a bang, Furfaro says. Itll be fun to spend that night in (the kitchen) and to get Pat out for a little bit of a curtain call. Murphy and his wife Shauna will continue to live in Rosebud, and Furfaro is glad Murphy will continue to play a role in village life. Im looking forward to using Pat as a consultant, Furfaro says. He hopes Murphy will teach culinary classes and provide catering. He likes spending time there. He likes spending time with people, Furfaro says. We anticipate seeing a lot of Pat. throughout her school years, including winning the Schulte Cup at an oratorical contest and The Governor Generals Medal as a result of Grade 9 Departmental Examinations. She remembers swimming in the original swimming pool which was lled with rather green-looking water from a nearby ditch! She took piano lessons from Mrs. Jessie Kennedy at the Strathmore Train Station, taking Royal Conservatory of Music exams and playing piano for many events and dances. After graduating from High School she attended the University of Alberta (Calgary Branch) and on obtaining her Teaching Certicate, she taught one year in Gleichen and then in Strathmore where she taught Grades 2 and 3 until June, 1960, after which she became the school secretary (a part-time position) until 1971, rst for Principal Ian MacKenzie and then for Principal Art Eeles. But, she didnt become idle, as she was giving private piano lessons, was a busy mom, bookkeeper and farmwife. The farming included grain and hay crops, cattle, pigs and laying hens, which meant eggs had to be collected and sold. It was when Mary attended a dance in Nightingale with Marilyn McLean that she met her husband-to-be, Bill Hendricks, and on July 26, 1958, Bill and Mary were married at Sacred Heart Church in Strathmore. Their marriage produced three sons and they have six delightful grandchildren (three boys and three girls) who range in age from nine to 25. Looking back, the rst few years of their marriage appear to have been very busy. Mary was teaching and Bill drove to his parents farm each day. In 1959 Bill started working with Robert Lausen building houses, and in 1962 began building their new house (where they still live), which they moved into in the spring of 1963. They started farming on their own, but it was so dry (with poor crops) that they invested in a sprinkler irrigation system in 1976, which proved very benecial, especially for alfalfa. Bill worked for M & M Drilling, and Wheatland Propane and Plumbing to bolster their income. Their community activities include being active in Sacred Heart Parish in Strathmore where Mary has played the church organ since the 1950s, and has been a long-time member of the Catholic Womens League, while Bill was the Financial Secretary of the Knights of Columbus for many years. Being avid hockey supporters, they were both involved with Strathmore Minor Hockey during the years all three sons played. The family was also long-time members of the Crowfoot 4-H Beef Club. Changes in the area - where there used to be no acreages, there are now over 30. There have also been many infrastructure changes due to the increased growth. They have both enjoyed their association with the people of the Strathmore area, and look forward to continuing.

USING TECHNOLOGY Okay, I admit it, I like being on Facebook. It helps me stay in touch with my community ... I can stay connected to friends ... I can share things that are happening, in a useful and appropriate way about church events. That is how I found out one of my members truck had been stolen, so I could keep an eye out. That is how I have purchased things ... and yes, I have even met some people on Facebook, who have become friends ... but I only like it when it is used appropriately and for the good of others, not to bully or threaten or promote negative purposes. I also admit it, I like to text ... I like to watch TV ... I like to ... well, that space could be lled in with lots of different possibilities. The thing is, we are all different people, and we have different interests and passions and concerns. What I dont like, is when any, or all of those things, when how we choose to live, are used in ways that are not constructive, and in fact, can be used to be destructive and downright harmful and hurtful to others. When I was a child, my mom always used to say ... if you cant say anything nice, dont say anything at all! And I have tried very hard to let that be part of my motto in life ... although I have tried to take it even further. If I cant say, do, act, live in a positive way, for others, for the town, for the world, then I am better not to be doing it at all, not to be acting that way, not saying those things! That is also how my faith in God works. In Jeremiah 29:11, God spoke through the prophet saying for I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. God too, wants his words, his teachings, his love, his grace, to be used for the good of all people. We are not to use them to judge one another, or to justify who is better or worse. They are given to people, to help us know, for ourselves, in relationship to others and to the world, how to live in ways that are not harmful, are not destructive. Rather, if we use them properly, we can build up and make the world God has created for us, a better place for all. I dont think any of us would argue whether or not not stealing, not murdering, respecting authority, are good things. They make our world much better ... but, do we realize that they come right out of Gods word. Do we remember that Gods word encourages caring for those in need? Or showing compassion to widows, orphans, handicapped, the sick, the lonely? That it implores us to show due respect, to honor our creator and all that God has made and provided for us? There are many things that we use, many things we partake in every day of our lives. How we use them determines if they are benecial or destructive. Perhaps my mothers quote of so long ago provides a good measuring stick for us, as to how we use things, how we live. If we cant do it, nicely or compassionately for all others, if it isnt benecial, then perhaps we should not be using or doing it at all ... just something to consider in how we live out each day of our lives ... Bills father, John, was born in 1897 at Earling, Iowa, one of eight children. He served in the American army in 1918 before coming to Canada in 1920 with his family. They came to Canada riding in three box cars containing their horses, machinery and household items, coming to Rockyford where Bills grandfather, Hugo, had bought land after visiting relatives there and liking the area. Bills mother, (Othilia) Till Flammang was born in 1898 in Mapleton, Iowa, one of 16 children, and also came to Canada in 1920 with her sister and brotherin-law, Ann and Tony Muenchrath. Till worked as a telephone operator and also in the drugstore in Rockyford. John and Till were married in St Ritas Church in Rockyford in 1923, and had seven children, including Bill, who was born on the farm just north of Nightingale on Sept. 21, 1935. He started school at Valley Gardens School until that school burned down in 1944. He then attended Baintree School to nish Grade 3. He was then bused to Nightingale School for grades four through nine, followed by a year at St. Ritas Separate School in Rockyford. In those days farming took precedence over education so Bills formal schooling ended at the age of 16. In 1949 he received a plaque for his spring wheat sample at the Toronto Royal Winter Fair as a member of the Rockyford 4-H Grain Club. Marys grandfather, Cornelius Lauweryssen Sr., was born in Holland in 1866 and came to Canada in 1911 following correspondence with Gerrit VanOerle who had already come to this land of opportunity. He moved his family here in 1912, which included Marys dad, Cornelius (Corny Jr.) and they lived in the Akenstad district. Corny ( Jr) was born in Holland in 1898, returning to Holland in 1926 where he married Adriana van Eekelen, Marys mother, who was born in 1902 and came to Canada as a bride to a whole new way of life with many hardships. Mary was born on the family farm, located northeast of Strathmore (just half a mile from where they now live), on April 2, 1937. She was told that Dr. John Giffen had to come across the eld with sleigh and horses because the road was impassable due to the snow! As the last to be born, she rounded out the family of two boys and two girls. When it came time to start school, it was the same distance to either Berta Vale, Akenstad or Strathmore Schools, but as her brother was already attending Strathmore, thats where she went. Remember, these were the years before school buses, so they either rode their bikes, walked, or were driven to school by their parents. She attended grades one through eight at the old two storey school, and was the only graduate in June of 1955 who had attended all 12 years of school in Strathmore. She received many awards

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter If you notice a lot of people sporting pink hair these days its not the newest fad, but it is a part of the Hair Massacure fundraiser started by the MacDonald family. The fundraiser began in 2002, and was prompted by the third round of hair loss the MacDonald familys youngest daughter Kali went through during her chemotherapy treatments. In 2006 the idea of pink hair was introduced and became the signature trademark. After listening to a radio ad while with his mom, Ethan Berquist knew he wanted to sign up. Because there was a story on the radio and I felt really bad for the kid and then my mom told me about this and she asked me do you want to dye your hair pink, and I said yes, said Berquist. Then she asked do you want to shave your head on Valentines Day to donate it to people who are bald for wigs, and I said yes. Ethans sister Erika had spent some time in the Alberta Childrens Hospital in Calgary, so to help fundraise for them is something the whole family was immediately in favour of. Erika had kidney reux. Her ureter was 10 times the size it was supposed to be, which was causing everything in her bladder to kick back up into her kidney and affect her kidneys. Due to an easily misdiagnosed use of antibiotics the infection was held off. Once the antibiotics were stopped, the infection then took over quickly. She ended up septic and an infection took over everything. Erika, 20 months, has spent most of her life either in hospitals or on antibiotics. She has had surgery, which resulted in the need for a blood transfusion. At the beginning of December 2013 Ericka was taken off antibiotics and seems to be okay now, though further testing in February will determine that. It kind of hits close to home for me, I got lucky my babys ne, shes healthy, shes good now, but

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Fresh off her two golds in freeskate and dance from the 2013 Special Olympics in Korea, Strathmores Kennedy Zaytsoff is setting her sights on skating regionals in March. Its the kind of beginning competition before going to provincials, to nationals, and to worlds, Zaytsoff said. Zaytsoff, 18, has been skating since she was ve-years-old. I think I saw it on TV or something and I wanted to try it and see. I just like the jumps and spins, and how graceful it is, she said. For Special Olympics, Im in level ve. Level six is the highest level. Zaytsoff plans on participating in the Special Olympics once more in 2017, and practices four times a week with the Strathmore Skating Club. They made me a better skater, and maybe made me where I am today, Zaytsoff said of her club. Its good. Its a fun experience. Zaytsoff also assists with the clubs Can Skate clinics and volunteers when she can. After graduating high school this year, Zaytsoff plans on enrolling in college programs where she can include her love for skating. I wanted to get maybe into broadcasting for sports, she said. I want to inspire people to skate and stuff. Zaytsoff says then when shes on the ice, nothing bothers her in the zone. But I feel nervous when I compete, she laughs.

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Thirty-nine teams ocked to the Strathmore Family Centre from Jan. 31-Feb. 2 for the annual Laurie Morton Ruppe Memorial Ringette tournament, including 14 from Strathmore. The U12B Strathmore Ice Warriors nished with gold in their division, while the U16A Strathmore Ice earned silver. I think this is the fth or sixth year for this huge one, said Kimberly Proust, tournament organizer. We used to have (the age groups) all separated, but we decided a couple years ago to combine. Thats whats really unique about this, is we had our youngest skater who was four, and every single Strathmore ringette team participated in the tournament, all the way up to our ladies team. It was kind of cool that we had that opportunity this year. 470 participants competed for medals. Prebunnies, bunnies, and novice all were awarded hardware, but the older teams had to battle for gold and silver. We got lots of very, very positive response, from the traveling teams and the home teams. It was very, very successful, Proust said. I very much appreciate all the volunteers. We cant even have a tournament close to this without them. Proust said that Laurie Morton Ruppe even coached her ringette team when she was younger. Laurie was a member of our community who loved playing ringette. She was very instrumental in our association. She played, she refereed, she coached, and at one point she was the president, Proust said. The tournament is really in honour of her commitment to the sport.

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Fourteen-year-old Hailey McCallum of Strathmore will be competing in the Alberta Winter Games from Feb. 6-9 in Canmore, for Zone 2s Big Country female hockey team. We all work together, McCallum said. We have lots of skill on our team. McCallums linemate on the AAA Rocky Mountain Raiders of the Alberta Major Bantam Female Hockey League, Taylor Sawka, will also likely be on the same line for the Games, hoping to bring some offense for Big Country. Sawka and McCallum are rst and second in league scoring, with McCallum having 22 points in 21 games so far this season. Im excited, McCallum said. Im a good worker I guess, on getting the puck in battles, and then going hard to the net. McCallum and Big Country will play four round robin games, but could play up to six including playoffs. This would all be in the short span of three days. We need to keep our nutrition up, we need to keep drinking water all the time. Alberta Games was the same, McCallum said. Last year, McCallum competed in the ATB Alberta Challenge the games and the Alberta Cup rotate each year. Having that previous experience eases McCallums nerves. Its better now. Last year I was scared, but this year Im more excited about it, McCallum said. I want to go far and play high levels, and then hopefully get a scholarship or, like Team Canada or U18. The bantam forward has only been playing hockey for four years, starting with Strathmore Peewee, but had played ringette previously. Grit, aggressive that pretty much explains her, father Billie McCallum said. Shes doing really well.
Strathmores own Hailey McCallum will be representing Zone 2 at the Alberta Winter Games from Feb. 6-9 in Canmore in ladies hockey. McCallum also competed in the Alberta Cup last year for the South Lightning.

Bisons split, two games left

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Nearing the end of the regular season, the UFA Bisons are desperate for wins if they want a rst round bye for the playoffs. On Feb. 1, the Calgary Buffaloes offense proved to be too much, as they defeated the Bisons 8-4, capitalizing on the Bisons 11 penalties. I think it was part of it, Bisons Coach Dan MacDonald said of their time in the box. We struggled with the pressure they gave us, and we didnt react well. Hopefully we learn from that. Theyre a good team, I dont think theyve lost recently theyre on a roll. At the end of the rst, it was only 2-1 for the Buffaloes. However, they scored four goals in the second three on the powerplay, and one shorthanded and never looked back. MacDonald even changed from Garrett Mason to Carter Seminuk in net. It didnt change much. MacDonald said. Sometimes a change will be like a timeout almost, but thats not what happened. They kept blitzing us no matter who was in net. It was unfair to either one of them, our defense didnt have a good night. Bisons assistant captains Connor Boyd and Ryan Zeniuk had a goal and an assist each, while Matthew Forchuk and Zach Giroux both scored on the powerplay. The next night, Tyler Sharuga scored the game winner halfway through the third to break the tie, leading to the Bisons 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames. Bison captain Mackenzie Bauer had the teams rst two goals, both assisted by Mason McCarty. Still, MacDonald needs to see some change in his squad. We moved the puck better and did better things, but were still not the way we were playing when we were on our roll, he said. You know, we were moving our feet faster and we were moving the puck faster. We seem to have lost some condence with these few loses. The team only managed two wins out of six matchups in January, after winning all of their games in December. Maybe we thought it would be easy, after we had those wins. Now were learning, its the same old story, the reason we had them was because we worked hard together, MacDonald said. The Bisons have two remaining games: St. Albert on Feb. 15, and CAC Gregg Distributors on Feb. 16, both at home in Strathmore. Weve been very good on the road for most of the year, MacDonald said. Sometimes you get on the road and you really get together as a group. It shows when you get on the ice. Weve had quite a few loses at home, Im not saying home is an advantage right now, but itll be good for us to get ready for the playoffs. Down by one point for second place in the division, and thus, a bye for the rst round of the playoffs, coach MacDonald and the team will be focusing on defense for their week off. We still have real inconsistencies in our defensive end. Thats where we have to try to shore up, he said. We give up too many goals still to be good in the playoffs, you have to be real tight defensively. Were fast and we like to move the puck, so we like to be in their end, but at the same time we have to be better in ours.

SHaRON ALCE Carseland Curling Club The Carseland Mens Bonspiel and Oyster supper was a huge success. Thank you to the Carseland Lions once again for organizing and preparing the supper. The club is pleased to have your continued support. Another exciting highlight of the bonspiel was the draw to the button for all participants for a $20,000 prize, sponsored by Toole, Peet Insurance. One at a time, the participants stepped out on the ice to throw their rock with no broom to shoot at and no sweepers. There was only the camera set up, operated by Lorraine Toews, and a judge, Garry Toews, at the hog line to make sure no participant crossed the line before releasing the rock. The rock had to land completely within the centre circle. Only two rocks even touched the centre circle and as rst place could not be claimed in this challenge, the second place winner went to Kyle Brown, who received four rounds of golf at Speargrass. A free pizza night was provided by the curling club on this evening. It was great to see so many spectators come out to enjoy the excellent curling. The Bonspiel ended on Saturday evening with the following winners receiving the money prizes: A Event 1st Bartsch; 2nd Brown; 3rd Stewart: B Event 1st Miller; 2nd Percival; 3rd Robertson: C Event 1st Walker; 2nd Morton; 3rd Red Gun; 4th Hvingelby. We hope to see everyone back again next year.

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Riding a high from their last game against Notre Dame Collegiate, a 79-39 victory, the Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) Hawks couldnt edge out the Strathcona Tweedsmuir School Spartans on Jan. 30 at home losing 52-48 in junior boys basketball. It was a pretty even game throughout, Hawks Coach Tony Irving said. We had to come back several times, and put some pressure on at the end of the game. We just didnt have enough time left to come back. Irving felt the team needed to work on defensive rebounds, and their shooting percentage. The team is averaging roughly 30 per cent from the eld. Most teams like to be well up into 40 per cent, he said. (Strathcona) had a lot of good shooting in the second half to keep themselves up when we came backthey just had great shooting percentage.

Irving and his squad will see the Spartans once again, as Strathcona will be hosting zones at the beginning of March in Okotoks. HCC focused on an upcoming exhibition tournament involving 30 teams, from Jan. 31-Feb. 1, after the Strathcona loss. We played well as a team. We showed better defense in the second half than we did in the rst. Thats going to bode well for us in the Medicine Hat exhibition tournament, Irving said prior to leaving. A lot of the schools are above the division that were in, so its going to be very competitive. The Hawks look to veteran Chris OLeary to assist the team. Being on the varsity team last year, he shares lots of skill and experience. He shows great leadership on the team, Irving said. He brings faith, and hes certainly a role model. HCC is now 2-2 on the season, and must improve offensively and defensively the Hawks have scored 236 points for, but have had 235 points scored against them. Their next game is at home against Highwood High School on Feb. 4.

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter For the rst time this season, the Wheatland Warriors lost two games in a row Jan. 26, by a score of 3-1 to the Red Deer Ramada, and 6-5 on Jan. 31 to the Bow Valley Timberwolves. Against Red Deer, that was a letdown on our part. We didnt play very well, Warriors coach Mark Laycock said. The second game, I thought our effort was there, but it was just one of those nights. We gave up six goals, and we had chances that we didnt capitalize on. Ryan Ries did capitalize with less than a minute left for the bantam Warriors, bringing the team within one goal but they couldnt manage to tie it. Other goals were scored by Rylan Longmuir, Joel Krahenbil, and Chayse Hnatowich (who added two, and two assists). In the Warriors next game Feb. 2, they defeated the Medicine Hat Venom narrowly by a score of 5-4, a team they had beaten 11-0 in provincial play the week before. The game, Laycock says, was his teams best of the year. We just went in there and said the same thing take away time and space from them, and get pucks to the net. We knew it was going to be a closer game than the other day because Medicine Hat was ready for us, Laycock said. They were a little frustrated after the (Bow Valley) game. Theyre not used to losing two in a row. Krahenbil was the two-goal hero this time, including the game-winner halfway through the third. Braydon Neiszner, Rylan Longmuir, and Kyle Merkosky also scored as well. Zach Suntjens and Ryan McHarg added two assists each for the win. With playoffs fast approaching, the bantams are still tops in the North with a 24-3-2 record. They play the Venom once more in their next game, Feb. 7 in Hussar. We knew that the league was going to tighten up a little bit, and everything was going to get a bit more competitive. Im not really worried, I think we have a bunch that are good character kids, Laycock said. They know that its going to be tougher than it was at the start of the year theyre ready to work and learn here at the end of the year. I have trust that theyll show up in every game from here on out. BRAVES LOSE ONE, WIN TWO The Wheatland Braves played three games in a row from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2, winning two of the three matchups. In their rst, against Lethbridge Hurricanes White, half their goals came on the powerplay, thanks to Hassan Akl and Tarun Fizer. Kyle Bray and Ryan Orford gave the Braves the go-ahead in the second period, but the Hurricanes scored three more for the 6-4 win. The next night against Medicine Hat Venom White, Akl and Fizer continued their goal streak, while Ben Slemp scored the other. The Braves defeated Medicine Hat 3-1, with goalie Ethan Rycroft only facing nine shots, while his teammates put 44 onto Medicine Hats net. The peewee Braves traveled to Red Deer on Feb. 2, and came out with a 5-3 victory. With the score 2-0 for Red Deer early in the second, Fizer put two in the back of the net on the powerplay, while Crnkovic added another to give the Braves a 3-2 lead at the end of the period. Red Deer tied it up early in the third, but Cole Berg and Kyle Bray of Wheatland scored for the win and the security. Ryan Conroy helped with three assists, and Braves goalie Kenny HoltStewart stopped 13 of 16 shots. The Braves again had a strong offensive effort, with 45 shots. The Wheatland peewees are fourth in the North Division with 31 points, and have their next game against Lacombe at home on Feb. 15. CHIEFS cLIMbING The Wheatland Chiefs shut out the Cranbrook Knights on Jan. 31, with Mike Conrad making 27 saves. The Chiefs red 54 on the opposition, leading to goals by Mckay Bray, Cody Willis, and Taylor Donner. Coltyn Herman also scored once, and helped on two. The following night however, the midget Chiefs dropped 5-2 to the Airdrie Lightning. Willis and Blair Roszell found the back of the net for the Chiefs, but it wasnt enough, even putting 44 shots on net. The Chiefs have subtly climbed up to second in the North Division, two points behind the Red Deer Indy Graphics.

Ice Warriors keep gold at home

MEL BOSCHEE Ice Warriors The Strathmore Ice Warriors participated in the hometown Laurie Morton Ruppe Memorial tournament and had some great success, wrapping up an excellent tournament weekend. Friday, Jan. 31 saw our Ice Warriors hit the road for a drive out to Rockyford Arena to take on the Calgary Bow View Roar. The team was buzzing with anticipation as they stepped out on the ice. They knew the Roar would be worthy opponents and Ice Warriors had to be prepared. After the rst period the teams were even 1-1. The second period whistle sounded and the Ice Warriors answered back to the two Roar goals with four more of their own. This gave the Ice Warriors their rst win of the tournament 5-3. Saturday again took the Ice Warriors out to Rockyford Arena to take on the South Calgary Whiplash. It was a cold start to the day, and the Ice Warriors were denitely slow to get in the game. Halfway through the rst period, the Ice Warriors were being shut out 2-0. Before the buzzer sounded signaling the end of the rst period, the Ice Warriors were tied with the Whiplash. Fans were unsure of what the pep talk was, but the Ice Warriors came out in the second period determined to make this game theirs. When the nal buzzer sounded, the Whiplash were shut down in the second period, nal score was 12-2 in favour of the home town Ice Warriors. After some team activities and some food to restore their energy, the Ice Warriors took on the Spruce Grove Revenge. Knowing a win would give them an unblemished record, the Ice Warriors were equipped to give it all they could. First goal of the game was scored by the Ice Warriors but Spruce Grove answered back quickly 40 seconds later with a goal of their own. At the end of the rst period the Ice Warriors were barely ahead by one point, scoreboard showing 2-1. The whistle sounded signaling the second period start, the Ice Warriors were passing with sheer distinction, and the girls were not missing any passes, snagging that ring like pros. The Spruce Grove Revenge were shut down in the second period, with the nal score being 5-1. This put a very elated Ice Warriors into the goal medal game between either the South Calgary Whiplash or the Bow View Roar, either very admirable opponents and not to be taken casually. Sunday the Ice Warriors were at the arena for the gold medal game to take on the Calgary Bow View Roar. Excitement, exhilaration, delight and anticipation were all words that described the team. They wanted the gold so bad they could almost taste it. A quick Ice Warrior meeting with the coach, tension rising in the building as the Ice Warriors stepped out on the ice. The whistle sounded and the teams holding each other level. At the nine minute mark the Ice Warriors nally broke onto the scoreboard but quickly seen Bow View answer right back. With Alex Mackay completely solid between the pipes, and giving the Ice Warriors the condence to take some chances, when the nal buzzer of the game sounded, the Ice Warriors were on top with a score of 9-3. This gave the Ice Warriors the win they so desired and were awarded the Gold Medal. Unselshly Joely Dahm gave up chances for goals to ensure a well-ex-

STEVE WILSON U19 Belle Ringette Strathmore Minor Ringette Association hosted their annual Laurie Morton Ruppe Memorial ringette tournament Jan. 31 to Feb. 2. The U19 girls played their archrivals from Rockyford in their rst game on Friday evening. The Strathmore girls put in a good effort and played a clean game, but as suspected it was a game of attrition and Rockyford walked away with a win under their belt. Late afternoon on Saturday, Feb. 1 the girls met Lacombe for their second game of the tournament and gave spectators an exciting display from the start, with each team matching each other goal for goal making it a 2-2 score halfway through the rst, and although Strathmore girls never gave up, Lacombe got some good shots in past the defence and took the lead. Early Sunday morning, the third and nal game was against The Calgary Blaze, a team that is very closely matched and always resulting in a game that can go either way at a moments notice. Strathmore gritted their teeth and really dug in and despite being three goals down, managed to get on the scoreboard halfway through the rst period thanks to Sarah McKinnon, and again with ve minutes left courtesy of Shae Lane. The hometown girls totally owned the second period and went on to score three more goals thanks again to Shae Lane, Dakota Cole and Hannah Olson, ending the game with a 5-3 victory and the tournament on a happy note.

The following are some memories from a few students and staff at Carseland School over the years. Instead of focusing on one memory, we decided to list a few in hopes of prompting your memories as well:
- We had a tragic bus accident on the rst day of school in 1991. We lost a local bus driver and 2 students, 2 more were sent to hospital. - Field trips were a big event. Some eld trips remembered were to Safety City, De Witts Dairy Farm, Childrens Hospital Teddy Bear Program, Shrine Circus, Munroes Farm, and of course Mrs. Upshaws famous trips to Drumheller, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, Frank Slide, Coaldale Birds of Prey, etc. etc. So many eld trips.. - We had the opening of the new school in 1992. The Education Minister ew in (very late) on a helicopter. The original 1930 school front was placed in the front of the new school, right next to the entrance. The old gym is the Library! - We made the Time Capsule to be opened in 2017. - Mr. Cook did school patrol and the patrollers won many awards. - Mrs. Prusky started intramurals at noon. - Mrs. Dye and Mrs. Wrathall put on craft classes. - Ms. Cannady started folk dancing classes and Mr. Wong had square dancing. - Mrs. Cochlan and Mrs. Taylor played piano for everything. - Mr. Wong had a chess club. 1928 2014 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Evelyn Louise Momy. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Evelyn was predeceased by her beloved husband Leonard in 1991. She is lovingly remembered by her son David (Carol); her grandchildren Sarah, Jonathan (Kate), Philip (Danielle) and great grandchildren Caleb, Grayson, Shea and Sadie. April 23, 1919 January 29, 2014 Don passed away peacefully on January 29, 2014, at the Sagewood Age Care Community in Strathmore. He is survived by Margie, his constant companion and loving wife of 66 years, and will be remembered as a very special dad by his children: Bruce (June) McArthur, Sandra (Mark) Ganes, Marilyn (Don) Stewart; Grampa by his grandchildren: Amy (Matt) Gamracy, Brad (Kelly) McArthur, John McArthur and Paula Kerr, Clint (Cortney) Ganes, Noah Ganes and Hannah MacLean; Grampa GG by his great-grandchildren: Cole, Manney, Hardy, Henry, Barett, Ivy and Isla. Our family cannot fully express our gratitude to management, staff and friends at Sagewood. They supported us all in our time of need and we are so happy that Don was able to come home from the hospital, and that Margie could spend her days with him in his room. Extra special thanks to everyone from the Golden Hills Neighborhood wing, who took such tender, loving care of Grampa for the past two months. Strathmore Handibus has seen continued success in lling the transportation needs of our local seniors and physically handicapped citizens due to substantial support from the Town of Strathmore and Wheatland County.
