From the Pastors Desk

The middle of February is rapidly approachingI could have sworn Christmas was only celebrated yesterday!and with the approach of Lent theres very little date that things are back to normal. As I mentioned last week, our task as a community is to give our attention to both the normal things of Parish life and to fostering the development of those things we have identified as the priorities of our Parish Pastoral Plan. In that vein, a number of things for your consideration: Family Ministry Committee As part of the Parish Pastoral Plan adopted last year, it is now time to make progress with the establishment of the proposed Family Ministry Committee. This is the Committee that will explore and develop our Parish response to the need of children, youth and their families. An initial public meeting for anyone interested in this issue will be held on Wednesday 26th February at 7pm in the Parish Hall. This initial meeting will have the purpose of formally establishing the Committee and discussing the broader issues that will be a focus of the Committees work going forward. Scripture Study Group Ive been approached as to the possibility of offering a regular Scripture Study group in the Parish, and this is certainly something I am open to. I have access to a program called Journey from the United States which provides a very good means of engaging in studying the Scriptures from a distinctively Catholic perspective. Im going to suggest that a monthly meeting following this program might be a good way to proceed with this endeavour. If there is sufficient interest for a monthly Scripture Study group we will offer this program in the Parish. So that we can determine whether this program should proceed could I ask you to let the Parish Office know of your interest (including a preferred day and time for the study group to gather). Until next week Fr Andrew

Lenten Groups in 2014

The Season of Lent is a little over a month away. Once again the Parish will be hosting Lenten Groups to assist parishioners with their Lenten reflection and preparation. This years program, entitled Encounter, is sourced from the Diocese of Wollongong, and its author, Fr Greg Homeming ocd, says: I hope that as you accompany Jesus and look into his eyes with the eyes of our soul you will see a man who is more than a great man; this man is God with us As you experience betrayal, disappointment, fear or abandonment, remember that this, amongst other things, is what you have in common with Jesus. Anyone who would like to host a group in their home should contact Greg at the Parish Office (6554 6304). Lists of groups will appear in the churches in the coming weeks.

Parish Intercessory Prayer Group

Our Parish is blessed to have an Intercessory Prayer Apostolate. This group is comprised of a loose knit group of parishioners who simply pray during their normal daily prayers for people on a list updated and distributed each month. There are no meetings and no cost whatsoever and each member may remain anonymous if desired. Because there are no meetings this group is very suitable for all parishioners, especially some of our housebound or incapacitated folk to enable them to play an important role within the parish community, so allowing them to play an important and active role within the life of the parish community. If you are interested in joining this group, just ring Bob Cashman on 6555 5914 or leave your name and phone number with the Parish Office. To request prayers for someone in need of prayer please contact Bob on 6555 5914 leaving your name and contact details.

Flower Roster
Thank you to the ladies who arrange the flowers in the Tuncurry Church. Judy Tyler and Julie Drinkwater have joined the team of Elle Cairns-Cowan, Gwynne Jones and Denise Maddocks. Our thanks also go to Kath Copas and Pat Schiavi who have retired from the team. Copies of the new roster are available from the rear of Tuncurry church.

Let them thank the Lord for his mercy, his wonders for the children of men, for he satisfies the thirsty soul, and the hungry he fills with good things.

Bishops Pastoral Care Appeal

During the week, the parishes of the Diocese received a letter from Bishop Bill concerning the current situation facing South Sudan, and the impact on those Sudanese who are living in our diocese. The letter reads, in part: One of our young students from St Pius X [Adamstown] has been caught up in the horrors of the current bloody situation in South Sudan while on school holidays visiting her grandmother and cousins. She has displayed great bravery, skill and audacity in rescuing members of her family out of the carnage of the city of Juba. At the same time this news reached me of her rescue of family members, Sr Betty Brown rsj and Sr Diana Santleben op brought to my attention the overwhelming requests for financial assistance from Sudanese families recently settled in Newcastle, wanting to rescue elderly parents and young children from South Sudan. They do not want to bring them to Australia. Families simply want to buy bus fares and pay for visas for family members to enter Kampala in Uganda, or Nairobi in Kenya. I have given permission for a special appeal to run this weekend to assist these families. It can take the form of an extra collection or a leaving collection after Mass. This is an opportunity for the diocesan community to show further support and solidarity for the refugee families we have welcomed into our community. The money will be distributed to the families through Penola House. We will ensure that you receive feedback on the plight of these family members, the numbers assisted and especially any news about our brave young student from St Pius X. [Some people] may be aware of the identity of this student and her family. In the briefing note [see the church noticeboardsEd.] we have named her Subin the second most popular name for girls in the Sudan. It is important at times such as this that the identity, whereabouts and circumstances of the person and their family be protected as much as possible. As mentioned last weekend, our Parish will hold continue its exit collection this weekend in support of the Bishops Pastoral Appeal before sending donations via the Diocesan Offices. If you would like to make an individual tax deductible donation to this Appeal, please contact Mark Lees in the Diocesan Fundraising Office on 4979 1124 or by email on mark.lees@mn.catholic.org.au Fr Andrew

Project Compassion 2014

Each year Caritas Australia invites the people of Australia to participate in the Lenten fundraising event called Project Compassion. Caritas Australia is the international aid and development organisation of our Catholic Church in Australia, working to end poverty, promote justice and uphold the dignity of people who are experiencing poverty and injustice. Project Compassion 2013 raised over $11 million, and our Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle contributed $224, 160.00 (thank you!). The theme for Project Compassion 2014 is Have life and have it to the full (John 10:10). This idea was affirmed when Pope Francis said, Men and women of all times and all places desire a full and beautiful life a life that is not threatened by death but that can mature and grow to its fullness. Dont we all wish for a life filled with certainty; a life free from the burden of poverty with equal access to food, water, education, healthcare and shelter; a life of dignity and a life of peace within our hearts and minds? Project Compassion stories for 2014 are about our desires for this full and beautiful life within the surroundings of home. Not just a house in which to live, but of truly being at home and feeling content. Your support for Caritas Australia is invaluable. Please give generously.

At all other times: whenever possible the response will be sung by the assembly, and a psalmist/cantor will read the verses of the Psalm. When no musicians are available: the Responsorial Psalm will be spoken in its entirety, with a reader reading the verses, and the assembly joining in the response. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Wherever possible: the Gospel Acclamation will be sung in it entirety, with a psalmist/cantor singing the verse and the assembly joining in the response, i.e. the Alleluia or Lenten equivalent. When the above options are not available: the entire Gospel Acclamation will be omitted. THE UNIVERSAL PRAYER (or Prayer of the Faithful) It is the practice of the Parish for the intentions of the Universal Prayer to be announced from the ambo by one of the rostered readers.

Pastoral ministry in a missionary style is not obsessed with the disjointed transmission of a multitude of doctrines to be insistently imposed. When we adopt a pastoral goal and a missionary style which would actually reach everyone without exception or exclusion, the message has to concentrate on the essentials, on what is most beautiful, most grand, most appealing and at the same time most necessary. The message is simplified, while losing none of its depth and truth, and thus becomes all the more forceful and convincing. Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, 35.
