Savu Andrei Mihnea Letter of Motivation

For several years now, I began paying a great deal of attention to various local and international news media, in order to form a better picture of the actual world Im living in. One of the first things Ive noticed is how often recurring stories about international economics are actually presented. In broad terms, Ive learned about event such as the European Debt Crisis or unemployment rates that differed by country and I motivated myself to find out what their actual causes and implications might be. his is how my passion for economics and macroeconomics in particular started. !ow I loo" at it is that I wanted to obtain the necessary analytical tools that would allow me to e#plain how the world functions. $ecause of this, when I enrolled in the I$ program, I chose Economics as one of the sub%ects to study at !igher &evel 'intensive study(. his allowed me to get a deeper understanding of the principles of economy, helping me understand what factors determine the changes in economy, thus helping me develop my analytical and observation s"ills. $esides my academic education, I also too" part in various e#tracurricular activities. For e#ample) I had an internship at !ealth *dvisors +,&, where I completed a professional training internship within mar"eting, commercial and financial departments. *lthough the scale was small, I managed to understand how a firm copes with unstable economic conditions, such as great political instability or rising prices. I participated in -numele comptetitiei cu petrolu., as small competition held at the $ritish +chool, that involved us having to decide if we invest in buying oil barrels depending if we thought that the price was going to rise or fall, after having an article shown to us. o further test my decision/ma"ing and development s"ills I -inscris. at the beginning of the summer 0123 in the Dragons Den competition, which consisted of ma"ing a team and deciding on a buisness plan and how we were going to achieve it. 4e decided that we were going to develop a wind turbine power plant that would be able to ma"e enough electricity to power up 5oluntari. 4e won 0nd place overall and we were also awarded the 67ost Invovative Idea8 throphy. One of my first economic lessons introduced the distinction between economic theories that are used to e#plain observed phenomena and economic models, mathematical representations of such theories, used to illustrate the relationship between economic variables. I understood that mathematics provides essential tools for economic analysis. For me, this was good, because I have always been passionate about mathematics. $ecause of this, I too" it at I$ as a higher level sub%ect and participated in the ,omanian Olympics mathematical competitions from the 9th grade every year. :ursuing my study in Economics at university level will provide a great opportunity for me not only to gain "ey abilities that will help me see a clearer image of where the world is at this point, in terms of trade, international relationships, cultural influences and micro economic climate, but also to continue meeting the challenges of mathematical analysis in concrete, real/life situations, which is something that ma"es this particular area of study greatly appealing to me. $eside my academic pursuit, I hope that I can build e#perience as a piano player, as I have been, for the past four years. I am ready to move on in life, as an active member of your university;s community.
