INTRODUCTION
ThelittleRedSchoolHousewhereoneteacherwasallthingstoallstudentshaslongsincebeen replacedbytheeducationalteam.Teachersnowareabletoperformbetteratteachingdueto theresourcesavailabletothemsuchas,schoolnurses,psychologist,instructionassistants, secretaries,busdrivers,cooks,maintenance,grounds,andCUSTODIANS. Inadditiontocreatinggoodwillfortheschoolthroughpreparationofthebuilding,the custodianmustattendtoallsituationsastheyariseandmustusediplomacyinthehandlingof teachers,students,andthegeneralpublic.Custodiansmustnotonlypossessknowledgeofthe schoolfacility,butalsoobtaingeneralknowledgeoftheoperationoftheschoolprogramso thattheymaybeabletogivesensibleanswerstothepublic. Custodiansshouldneverdiscusswiththepublic,whatgoesonaroundtheschool,never criticizefellowworkers,teachers,theprincipalsortheadministrativestaff.Theprimaryeffort inpublicrelationsbythecustodianmustbecarriedoutwiththepublicitself. Cooperationwiththeprincipalandteachingstaffismostimportant.Thecustodianisincontact withthesepeopleeveryday,andmanythingsmustbedonewiththemduringthecourseofthe dayswork.Byfarthemostcontactwillbemadewithstudents.Ifthecustodiandoesnothavea goodrelationshipwithstudents,theycanusuallylookforwardtoagoodmanyheadaches whichwillincludealotofextrawork.Custodiansshouldtrytogaintheconfidenceofthe students,attimesgoalongwiththeiranticsandhelpthemwithsmallthingswhichtheywill appreciate. Ithasbeensaidthatinanyschoolthebestpublicrelationsrespectingthecustodialstaffisan attractiveandwellkeptbuilding,andoftenisakeycriteriaincreatingprideinaschoolsystem. Acleanattractiveandwellkeptschoolgivesthecommunity,staffandstudentsafeelingof confidence. Thevastmajorityofcustodiansfailuresresultinginterminationofemploymentcanbetraced tofailuresinhumanrelations.Becauseofthehighpercentageinthisarea,everycustodian shoulddevotetimeperiodicallytoseekbetterwaysofgettingalongwithpeople.Theareaof gettingalongwithpeopleisacomplexaslifeitself.Therearesomanydifferencesinpeople thatitwouldbedifficulttocompilealistofdifferences.Onecouldalmostsaythatthereareno twopeoplealike.

Custodiansintheirwork,comeincontactwithmanykindsofpeople.Itissaidthatthe custodianshouldgivethoughtandpreparationinmakinganefforttowardsestablishinggood workingrelationswiththeirpeers,staff,andcommunity. Custodianshaveaneedforrecognitionandacceptance.Recognitionforwhattheydoand acceptancefortheirtrueworthintheparttheyplaytowardsthefunctiontobeperformedin helpingtomakethetotaloperationasuccess.Acceptanceisanutmostimportanceasa worthwhilecontributingmemberoftheschool. ThroughC.O.I.(ContinuousQualityImprovement),thecustodianincreasestheirskilland performance,providingWorldClassCustodialService.Withthiscomesthesatisfactionof accomplishmentandofmakingarealcontribution. Theschoolismerelythephysicalspacewheretheeducationalprogramishoused.Ithasno reasontoexistexcepttohousethisprogram.Theschoolisdividedintopartstoprovidethe variousservicesneeded.Standardsofcleanlinessaboutthebuildingandgroundsbecomean educationaltoolfortheteachertouseinteachinggoodhousekeepinghabits.Clean,pleasant surroundingsarecontributingforcesforschoolpride.Thecustodiansaremembersofthe educationalteamandaremajorcontributorstotheeducationalsystem. Aswemoveforward,custodianswillbechallengedasneverbeforeasthedemandon educationalbudgetsincrease.Custodianswillbeexpectedtodomore,asstaffingdecreases andcompetitionforeducationaldollarsbecomesincreasinglymoredifficult.Thechallenges aheadaretokeepexpectationshighwhichwillrequirecustodianstoworksmarternotharder. Custodiansdutieswillneedtobefocusedmoreonsanitarycleaningandlessoncosmetic.To achievehighlevelsofcleannessdaycustodianswillneedtoconcentrateoncleaningmore duringthedaytohelpassistthenightcustodiansintheirseeminglyimpossibletasks. Custodiansareanimportantpartintheoveralloperationoftheschoolandtheeducational process.Itisourobligationtoprovidetheservicesneededtokeepourschoolsasafeand healthyenvironmentforourstudentsandstafftolearnworkin.

Safety
Safetymustremaintobeournumberoneresponsibilitytoourselves,administrators,teachers, supportstaff,andstudents.Constantattentionmustbepaidtoallaspectsofthebuildingsand theequipmentcontainedbothinandaroundtheeachfacility.Everyonemusthaveadeep senseofconcernthatmakesthemsearchoutanypotentiallyunsafecondition. Ofparticularconcernisforcustodiansafetywhileonthejob.Thefollowingcommonsensedos anddontsarelistedforyourconsideration: Reportallnecessaryrepairs;turninaworkorderrequestifneeded. Knowwhoyoursafetycommitteerepresentativeis. Whenlifting,useyourlegsnotyourbackorlocatedequipmenttoaidinthelift. Whenusingastepladder,donotusethetoptworungs,ifneededgetatallerladderor turninarequestforamanlift. Alwaysreadandfollowthedirectionsonproductslabels.Nevermixtwoormore productstogether,especiallybowlcleanerwithanythingelse.Foradditional information,refertotheMSDS(materialsafetydatasheet)forthatparticularproduct. Neverhaveelectricalcordsstrungacrosstrafficareasorleavelivecordsorequipment unattended.Unplugelectricalcordsattheoutletimmediatelyaftercompletingtask. Repairfaultycordsatonce,neveruseanelectricalcordwiththegroundprongmissing. Alwaysknockorannounceyourself,beforeenteringanofficeoroppositesex(orunisex) restroomtoclean.Alwayspostthepropersafetysignwhenworkinginareasthat requireaposting.Example(Donotremove,donotenter,cautionwetfloor,in emergencycall,etc.) Alwayswearappropriatesafetyprotectionwhenperformingtaskthatrequireproper protection,suchasgloves,safetyglasses,etc. Alwaysseekinformationwhennotsureaboutaproductorprocedure. Alwaysusetherighttoolfortherightjob. Alwaysusecommonsenseandifnotsuredonotdothetaskuntilyoureceiveproper information.

FireProtection
FireExtinguishers: Reportanyextinguishersthatarenotcharged,nottaggedwiththeproperdate.Extinguishers mustbefreeofobstructions.Classificationasfollows: AForfiresinvolvingcombustibleslikewoodorpaper Borflammableliquids,gases,andgasoline CForelectricalwiringandequipment ABCForcombinationfires DForcombustiblemetalslikemagnesium Pullthepin,standbackabout8feet,aimthehoseatthebaseofthefire,andsqueezethe trigger.Theextinguisheronlylast320seconds,makesurewhensprayingawastepaper basketnottoblowtheburningpapersoutofthebasket.Neverputwateronanelectricalfireor electricalequipment.Dontattempttofightafirethatistoobigforyou! FireAlarmSystems: Itistheresponsibilityofthecustodiantomakesurethatthefirealarmequipmentisinworking orderatalltimes.ReportanymalfunctionstotheirSupervisorimmediately. Housekeeping: Allcorridors,entrances,andstairwaysmustbekeptfreeofobstructionsatalltimes.Makesure thatallexitsareclearofice,snow,andanyotherobstructions.Doorsmustalwaysbeingood workingorderandthatnofirerateddoorsareproppedopen.Keepcombustiblematerialsaway fromlightsandmachinery. Electrical: Makesurethatallelectricalwiresandlightingfixturesareproperlysupportedandconnected. Allelectricalmotors,fans,shafts,ventgrillsandanyothermachinesorareasthatcollectdust thatcouldcreateahazardmustbekeptcleanfromdust,lintanddebris. FlammablesLiquids/Vapors: Keepawayfromheatoropenflame.Useonlyinareaswithproperventilation.Storeonlyin propercontainerandneverinanythingbreakable.Onlytakeoutenoughwhatittakestodothe job.Alwayscleanupallspillsandleaks.Removeclothingthathasabsorbedflammableliquids immediately.Donteverstoreemptyflammableliquidcontainersnearanignitionsource.

RequiredResponsibilities
MaterialSafetyDataSheets(MSDS): ItistheresponsibilityofthecustodiantokeeparecordofallMSDSforallchemicalsthatthey haveintheirpossession.AcopyoftheMSDSsheetmustalsobeprovidedtotheschoolmaster logbook.IfaMSDSisnotprovidedwithachemicalorthereisnorecordofaMSDSforany chemicalthecustodianmustcontacttheirsupervisorandonewillbeprovided. Equipment: Itistheresponsibilityofthecustodiantoensurethatallcustodialequipmentisinproper workingorder.Ifanyequipmentisinneedofrepairaworkorderrequestmustbesubmitted. FacilityRepairs: Itistheresponsibilityofthecustodiantoreportandorsendinaworkorderrequestforany building/groundsrepairs.Thecustodianisexpectedtomakesomeminorrepairssuchas changinglamps,minorflooring,etc.Itisnotedthatcustodialrepairswillbelimitedandsuch repairsbeyondthoselimitationsneedtobetheresponsibilityofthemaintenancedepartment. ManLifts: Itisrequiredforanycustodiantobeproperlytrainedonhowtosafelyuseanyofdistrictman liftsbeforetheyareallowedtousethem. Chemicals: Itistheresponsibilityofthecustodiantorequestusage/traininginformationonanychemical he/sheisnotfamiliarwith.Itistheresponsibilityofthecustodiantotrainanysubstitute custodianoncleaningpracticesandtheuseofchemicals.Itistheresponsibilityofthehead custodiantotrainanynewcustodianassignedtotheirschoolondistrictprocedures. Uniforms: Everycustodianisrequiredtowearadistrictprovideduniformtop.Itwillbeeachcustodians responsibilitytolaundrytheirownuniform.Thepurposeoftheuniformisprovidinga professionalappearanceandinstallsprideinthedepartment.

Chemicals:
SnoqualmieValleySchoolDistrictiscommittedtoprovideitscustodianswiththebest availableproductsonthemarket.Thedistrictisalsocommittedtoprovidethesafest productsfortheprotectionofitsemployees. Theuseofdisinfectantsistobeusedonalimitedbasis.Theuseofdisinfectantsisonly tobeusedincaseofapandemicorotherrelatedcircumstancethatwouldwarrantits use.Thereareexceptionslikewrestlingmatsandothersportsrelatedmaterialsthatare subjecttobodyfluids.Cleaningupbodyfluidswillrequiretheuseofdisinfectants. CustodialEquipment: Itistheresponsibilityofthecustodiantomakesuretheirequipmentiswellmaintained, by making sure the equipment is cleaned after each use and checked for worn parts. Make sure that all filters are cleaned, belts checked for wear, and batteries fluid checked for proper levels. Major repairs and costs for repairs can sometimes be eliminated by carrying out minor maintenance on a regular basis. Proper care of preventative maintenance will extend the life of the equipment, make an employees job easier, less frustrating, and provide a measure of safety for the equipment operators. If the equipment needs repair it must be reported to their supervisor and a workorderrequestsubmitted. Itisrecommendedthatalloperatingmanualsandreplacementpartscatalogsbekeptin the main custodial office for quick and easy reference. Allow only capable and knowledgeable operators access to the equipment. Remember, you are in a school environment.Alwaysremovekeysandunplugmachineswhentheyareleftunattended; even for a few moments. Store equipment securely after use. Do not attempt repairs thatarebeyondyourcapabilities.Alwaysaskforadvicewhenneeded. Custodial budgets are in constant competition with educational and other district demands which has resulted limited staffing, resulting in making sure that the right equipment is to be used allowing custodians to perform more efficiently. Regardless of whatexpectationsandstandardsonemayhopetoachieve,iftherightequipmentisnot operatingonecannotdothejobthantheendresultcannotbefulfilled. CustodialCart: Inspect screws as well as nuts and bolts for tightness. Check castors for ease of rolling andreplacewheelsifcrackingappears. Ladders: Fully extend an extension ladder before using to check the condition of the rope. Check allladdersrungsbeforeeachuseforanydamagedrungs.Makesurethatladderanchors are operational and the rubber antislip pads are affixed. Make sure all rivets are properlysecuredandneverstoreladderswhereheavyobjectsmayfallonthem.

FloorMachines: Review the manufactures handbook before using the machine. Make sure the rubber grips are secured to the handle. Check the electrical cords for loose connections as well as for cuts and twists. The cords must be knot free. It should be wrapped in loose loops and not twisted around the handle. Make sure the rubber bumper pads are in good repair. Use only properfitting floor pads. Remove the block or lay the machine down after use to keep the weight off the brushes and pads. Do not bypass any safety interlocks. MopBucketandWringer: Check the casters for ease of rolling and make sure the wringer spring is tight. Clean thoroughly after each use to prevent wax build up. Make sure the rubber grips are securedtothehandleandlubricatethewheelsperiodically. HandTruck/FurnitureDolly: Maintain tire pressure and replace the wheel assembly if the slid wheels are cracked or out of balance. Keep the wheels lubricated and inspect the nuts and bolts for tightness. Makesurethattherubbergripsaresecuredtothehandle. Blower: Review the manufactures handbook before using. In the fall before using check the spark plug. Always check the oil level before starting the machine. Idle the engine for 3 minutesbeforeshuttingdown.Checkalltheboltsfortightnessaftereachuse.Drainthe gas before putting the machine away for the spring storage. Change the oil twice a seasonandstoreforthesummerperiodwithcleanoil. VacuumCleaners(Wet/Dry): Check the electrical cords for loose connections as well as for cuts, twists, and missing grounds. Make sure the rubber grips are secured to the handle. Replace the wheel assemblyifthereisplayinthehubofthewheels.Checkthecastorsforeaseofrolling. Check hoses for wear and replace if holes are detected. Make sure all the clamps fit properly. Take care in replacing the head, if the head is out of round they will not seal properly. Empty the bag after each use. Check and make sure the necessary repairs to the float assemble and bag filter each time the vacuum is emptied. Clean and replace

the foam filter in the head 3 times a year. Store the vacuum with the head off the canisterafterawetpickup. VacuumCleaner(Upright/BackPac): The bags should be cleaned out each night unless it is disposable. BackPac vacuums perform better if the bag is not allowed to get over full. Brushes, beaters bar, belts, cords,vacuumheads,andhosesshouldbeinspectedweekly.Filtersshouldbeinspected weekly and cleaned as needed or replaced if necessary. BackPac vacuum canisters shouldbecleanedasneeded.Neverusethesevacuumstopickupliquids. AutomaticFloorScrubbers: After each use the recovery tank should be flushed clean, fresh water tanks should be drained. Floor pad assembly should be in the up position and cords inspected. The machine outer shell should be wiped down and check batteries for proper fluid levels. Check filters and clean or replace as needed. Inspect squeegee for wear and replace as needed,makesuresqueegeeiscleanedanddriedaftereachusetopreventanymildew build up and extend the life of the squeegee. For any other repairs such as drive lines, pumps, electrical problems etc. report them to the supervisor and submit a work order requestfortherepairs. CarpetExtractors: Clean hoses, tanks, filters, and brushes prior to storage. Check all hoses, belts, hoses and cords for wear. Repair or replace as needed. When stored raise brushes and leave thelidofftopreventmildew.Foranyotherrepairssuchasdrivelines,pumps,electrical problems etc. report them to the supervisor and submit a work order request for the repairs. KaiVac: Cleanhoses,tanks,andfiltersaftereachuse.Checkpumps,cords,hoses,nozzles,tires, filters, etc. for wear. Report any needed repairs to the supervisor and submit a work orderrequest.Makesuretirepressureisatproperairpressuretoassureeaseroll.

DustMops: The district has converted all dust mops to the microfiber pads. The large loop mops are to be used primarily for the lunch rooms for easier use on spilled liquids and food. Theothermicrofibermopsaretobeusedonotherareas.Keepthemopheadscleanby washingthemintheautomaticwashingmachinesanddryers.Neverusefabricsofteners whenwashingordryingthemops. WetMops: Wet mops should be cleaned after each use with a neutral cleaner and soaked in a bleachsolutionforwhiting.Thistheapproveduseofbleachdistrictwide. Gascans/propanetanks: Gascans,propanetanksmustbestoredinanapprovedventilatedarea.

The custodial room is your tool box. This is where work originates. The quality and quantityofworkwilldependonthewaythisspaceismaintained. UseoftheCustodialRoom The custodial room is to be used for the purpose for which it was designed. It wasbuiltasaplacethecustodianusestostorehis/herequipment,supplies,and toolstodothework. The custodial room is a working room. Therefore it must be kept neat and clean at all times. It is not a store room for the collection of items no one knows what todowith. The custodial room is the one place in the facility which the custodial staff can sayistheirs.Itisyourspacesotreatitthatway.

SafetyintheCustodialRoom Storeladdersinsuchawaythattheywillnotfall. Makesurethatallmaterialsarestoredproperly. Makesuretrashisputinthedumpsterattheendofyourshiftandnotstoredin thecustodialroom. Make sure that mops, brooms, and other tools are properly stored so that the roomissafe. Watch for frayed cords and missing grounds on equipment and repair immediately. NEVERSTOREBleachandAMONIANEXTORONEONTOPOFEACHOTHERKEEP THEMASFARAPARTASPOSSIBLE(orproductscontainingthem) Makesureallcontainersareproperlylabeled. Makesurethatlamps,especiallyfluorescentsareproperlystored.

GeneralConsiderations Makesuretheroomworksforyou.Setitupforyouconvenience. Alwaysmakesurethecustodialroomislockedwhenyouarenotthere. Dontcovertheelectricaloutlets. Attachashorthosetoyourwatertaptomakefillingyourbucketseasier.

TheCustodialcart Thecustodialcartisanextensionofthecustodialroom.Asthetimeyouhavetocleanis limitedandtheareatocleanislarge,itisextremelyimportantthatyouhaveaneatand organized custodial cart. Many custodial personnel have a habit of throwing things on their cart in a disorderly fashion. There are also times that the custodial cart seems to have more personal items on it than cleaning supplies and equipment. A little time spent at the end of the shift to clean and restock your cart for the next day is time well spent.Bepreparedforyourjob.

CLEANING PROCEDURES
Dusting: Dustareawhichhasaccumulatedonshelving,furnitureordesks,callattentiontoneglectof theseareas.Itisimportanttodustverticalareassuchasdoors,molding,etc.Theneglectto dustresultsinmorecomplaintsforthecustodiansthandoesanyotherphaseofschool housekeeping.Dustingshouldbedoneasfrequentlyastimepermits.Flatsurfacessuchas windowsills,desks,computermonitors,andshelvesneedthemostfrequentattention.Walls shouldbedustedatleastthreetimesayear. Dustingistoremovethedustfromthesurface,notjustthestiritup.Thiswhythecustodians useproperdustingtoolsandnotafeatherduster.Custodianscanusedifferenttoolstodust with,suchasavacuumcleanerwiththeproperattachmentsfordusting.Alsoalonghandled brushcanbeusedforsomewallsandceilings.Microfiberragsmaybeused,microfiberrags aredesignedtocollectthedustasitwipesandnotstirthedustup.Theidealtodustiswhen theroomisunoccupied. Whendusting,agoodmethodistotakebothamicrofiberragandadusterwithyouintothe room.Forsomepartsoftheroomyouwillusethedusterandintherest,themicrofiberdust cloth.Industingaroomapatternshouldbeworkedoutandfollowedjustasapatternis workedoutandfollowedforsweeping.Whendustingchairsbesuretotipthechairanddust thelegsofthechair.Venetianblindsshouldbedustedregularly.Useadustmoporavacuum cleanertool.Ifblindsaredustedfairlyoften,itcanbedonequiteeasily;butifleftforsome time,itbecomesaharderjob. Takeagoodlookaroundthebuildingandseeifthedustingcanbeimproved.
