LMB TOURS & EVENTS

Join us in 2014 as we bicycle down Michigans canopied forest roads, past beautiful inland lakes and along picturesque Great Lakes shorelines. Well show you breathtaking scenery, magnificent beaches, unique shoreline communities and picturesque lighthouses. LMBs Bicycle Tours are a major source of funding for the Leagues efforts to promote bicycling and the safety of bicyclists on the roadways in Michigan. In addition to our tours, LMB also hosts law enforcement trainings and an annual Advocacy Day held at the State Capitol. You can support LMBs bicycle education, advocacy, and promotion efforts by attending events highlighted throughout this publication with a blue LMB Event box.

$1-PER-RIDER EVENTS
In 2014, 62 events have pledged to donate $1 to LMB for every event participant. We are extremely grateful to the participating rides for their generous contributions to our efforts to promote bicycling and increase the safety of bicyclists on the roadways in Michigan. These dollars add up quickly, providing LMB with much needed funds that help with our education, advocacy, and promotion efforts. By choosing $1-Per-Rider Events this season, you will be supporting LMBs efforts to make Michigan a safer state for bicyclists. The complete list of participating $1-Per-Rider Events is listed on the next page and are highlighted throughout this publication in bold red type.

Michigan Ride Calendar

LMB MEMBER EVENTS

The Michigan Ride Calendar continues to be LMBs signature publication and an essential resource for bicycle enthusiasts in Michigan and beyond. With support from the Michigan Department of Transportation and our advertisers, LMB annually publishes and distributes 45,000 Ride Calendars. The 2014 Ride Calendar lists 200 Michigan bicycling events. Ride Calendars are mailed to all LMB members each year. This publication is also available via MDOT Welcome Centers, Convention & Visitors Bureaus, bicycle clubs and shops, and at numerous bicycle-related events throughout the year.
Design & Layout: John Lindenmayer

LMB member clubs, shops, and organizations host many fantastic bicycle events each year in Michigan. We strongly encourage you to support the groups that support us. Look for events throughout this publication with a blue LMB logo next to them. Non-member events appear in gray with smaller text size. Becoming a League member ensures that full-time bicycle-advocacy professionals are protecting your interests, keeping the roads open to bicyclists, and working to educate the government and public about the benefits of cycling and the rights of bicyclists. Learn more about League membership on the inside back cover. Page 32 lists current LMB member clubs, shops, and organizations as of 1/21/14.

Celebrating our recent victories! Your LMB advocating for you and the rights of all bicyclists in Michigan!

Make your pledge today to share the road and be a safer driver and bicyclist shareMIroads.org

TAKE THE PLEDGE!

In September of 2013, after years of pressure by LMB, Amtrak announced that they now allow roll on bikes on their Blue Water line. Make your reservation at: amtrak.com/tickets-reservations.

In January 2014 Governor Snyder signed HB 4866 into law, allowing bicyclists to use an alternative method to signal right turns. Bicyclists can now opt to point to the right to signal right turns.

The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph (20 kph) and remain silent during the Ride. Rides are typically 8 to 12 miles long. (20k) The Ride, which is held during Bike Safety month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, public safety and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The Ride is also a chance to show respect for our brothers and sisters who have been killed or injured. Helmets are mandatory. Lights are suggested. Please arrive and be ready to ride by 6:30 PM in all locations. Rides depart at 7:00 PM. Many locations will provide black & red arm-bands, to honor fellow cyclists killed or injured. On May 21st, 2014, at 7:00 PM, cyclists in Michigan will take to the road, joining our brothers and sisters across the globe in the 2014 Ride of Silence, a silent procession to honor friends and family who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Though cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isnt aware of these rights, or in some cases, aware of the cyclists themselves. The first Ride of Silence was organized in Dallas TX in 2003, when a nationally ranked endurance cyclist was struck and killed by a passing bus. Each year the Ride continues to grow. On May 15th 2013, the Ride of Silence took place in 370 locations worldwide, across all 50 states, in 26 countries and on all 7 continents. 1st Place
FATHER-SON BONDING by Kirsten Dykstra
(On the Cover) Captured at one of the Wednesday Night Worlds criterium races at an industrial park in Grand Haven. These races just started this past Summer as an opportunity for riders of all levels to practice criterium racing skills. On one of of the nights my husband, Derek Dykstra, and 12 year old son Dane Dykstra, went out on our tandem to race. As is usually the case, Derek did the lions share of the work while Dane was literally along for the ride. No denying the photographic evidence!

THEFT PREVENTION
Precautions:

Any lock can be broken, given enough time and the right tools, but there are ways to reduce the theft risk.

Inate tires to rated pressure listed on sidewall of tire Use a tire gauge to insure proper tire pressure Check for damage to tread and sidewall; replace damaged tire
Inspect brake pads for wear; replace if less than

RELEASE BRAKES:
A) On side-pull brakes there is usually a tensionrelease lever on side. B) On cantilever brakes remove cable from arm.

REMOVE WHEEL:
Unlock quick-release lever or loosen wheel nuts and remove wheel from frame.

remains Check pad adjustment; make sure they do not rub tire or dive into spokes Check brake-lever travel; with brakes applied, you need at least 1 between the lever and handlebar Make sure crank bolts are tight; lube only the threads, nothing else Check chain for wear; 12 links should measure no more than 12-1/8 long If chain skips on freewheel or cassette, you may need an adjustment or new chain and freewheel/cassette Wheel hubs need to be tight in the bike frame; your hub quick release should engage at 90 Hub quick releases should point to the back of the bike to ensure they dont catch on anything (releasing the wheel) Inspect brake quick releases to ensure that brake cables have been re-engaged
Take a quick ride to ensure derailleurs and brakes are working properly Inspect the bike for loose or broken parts; tighten, x, or replace them before you ride Pay extra attention to during the rst few miles

If at all possible, take your bike indoors with you; next best is locking it where you can still see it. Otherwise, lock your bike in a highly visible area as close to your destination as possible. Always lock your bike, even if youre just going to be gone for a minute or two; stealing an unlocked or improperly locked bike only takes a few seconds. Never lock just your bikes front wheel; youll come back to nd just the front wheel. Lock your frame and wheels to something solid and permanent; a thief can lift a bike over and off a sign post. Take anything removable unlocked wheels, seats, computers, lights, bike bags, etc. with you; if you can remove it, anyone can.

Locks & Cables:

U locks are the strongest; cable locks are only a minor deterrent to a bike thief. If you can, remove your front wheel and U-lock it to the rear wheel and the frame so that you ll the U of your U-lock. You can add cables, locking quick-releases, and/or seatpost bolts to secure your wheels and seat. Try to lock your bike to: A bike rack, when available. (Inverted-U bike racks have two points of contact, making it less likely your bike will fall over.) Dont lock or cable your bike to: Fire hydrants or police and re call boxes, electric trafc-signal poles, poles in bus or loading zones, or crowding an intersection, trees, or handicap ramps.

UNSEAT TIRE:
Use tire irons to unseat tire from rim on one side only.

Quick is for Quick Releases

REMOVE TUBE:
Reach in to tire and pull tube out. Generally rst pull opposite the valve stem.

is for Check it over

CHECK TIRE/ TUBE:

SIGNS AND SIGNALS

Obey all stop signs and signals; cyclists are not exempt from trafc laws. Signal your intentions clearly and in plenty of time. Signal left turns by extending your left arm straight out to the left. Signal right turns with an upturned left arm or an extended right arm. Signal stopping or slowing by extending your left arm straight down with your palm facing rearward.

Serial Numbers & Registration:

Check the tire and tube for embedded objects such as glass, nails, etc.

INSTALL NEW TUBE:

Even if the police recover your stolen bike, you wont get it back without the serial number; they need proof of ownership. If your bike-shop salesperson, DOEsnt show you your new bikes serial number on the frame and on the sales paperwork, ask for it. Some communities will register the serial number to help you recover your stolen bike.

Slightly inate tube to give it shape. Put valve stem in rst.

PUT TIRE ON RIM:

Work tire back on rim, making sure not to pinch tube between rim and tire. Start with section by valve. Push valve upwards to make sure it is not caught between tire and rim.

In Case of Theft:
File a police report at the local police station, with details of the theft, including your bikes serial number, and request a case number. Cite the case and serial numbers whenever you communicate with the police. Follow up by phone periodically to see if your bike has been recovered. If you have purchased scheduled item insurance on your bike, contact your insurance agent. Otherwise, you must weigh the cost versus benets of ling a homeowners-insurance claim.
