Alaserbeamexpanderisdesignedtoincreasethediameterofacollimatedinputbeamtoalargercollimatedoutput beam.Beamexpandersareusedinapplicationssuchaslaserscanning,interferometry,andremotesensing. Contemporarylaserbeamexpanderdesignsareafocalsystemsthatdevelopedfromwellestablishedopticaltelescope fundamentals.Insuchsystems,theobjectrays,locatedatinfinity,enterparalleltotheopticalaxisoftheinternaloptics andexitparalleltothemaswell.Thismeansthatthereisnofocallengthtotheentiresystem. Interpretingtheaboveequations,oneseesthatwhiletheOutputBeamDiameter (DO )increases,theOutputBeamDivergence(O )decreasesandviceversa. Therefore,ifyouusethebeamexpanderasabeamminimizer,thebeam diameterwilldecreasebutthedivergenceofthelaserwillincrease.Thepriceto payforasmallbeamisalargedivergenceangle.
