Finding The Right Flooring

Webforge Material Options
STEEL - CODE M
This is the most commonly used material and is used in all types of floor applications. It withstands impact loads well and is capable of spanning long distances. It is used extensively in power stations, refineries, chemical plants and offshore platforms for mezzanine floors, storage racks, catwalks, and conveyor walkways. Steel grating can also be supplied with floorplate or mesh attached if required. For further information see page 32.

FLOORING

ALUMINIUM - CODE A
Aluminium is usually used when weight or corrosion is an issue. Typical applications are in sewerage treatment facilities and other aggressive corrosive environments. Aluminium can also be used in commercial applications including sunscreens, privacy screens and security screens. Aluminium grating can also be supplied with floorplate or mesh attached if required. For further information see page 32.

FIBREGLASS - CODE I or V
FRP (fibre re-inforced plastic) or fibreglass moulded grating is commonly used where a metal product is not suitable. There are two basic types of moulded grating. Code type I uses isopthalic resin and code type V uses vinylester resin. FRP is non-magnetic, has low thermal conductivity is non conductive and non sparking. It is used in corrosive environments and where weight and hygiene may be issues. For further information see page 26.

EXPANDED METAL - CODE WM

Expanded metal is used for mezzanine floors, catwalks, walkways and storage racks. High strength to weight ratio makes it technically applicable in many engineering, industrial and ornamental applications. Because there are no welds or joins, it operates as a structural member that distributes loads evenly over a wide area. For further information see page 28.

STAINLESS STEEL - CODE S

Stainless steel is used in some chemical plant applications but more commonly where hygiene is an issue and foodstuffs are prepared. It has superior corrosion resistance to mild steel. Stainless steel can be treated with an electropolishing process. For specific information regarding availability contact your local Webforge Sales Office.

Our technical sales staff can answer all your enquiries. Calculations are made on the basis of relevant engineering practice and codes applicable. Our staff will provide advice on the most economical and correct type of flooring to meet your needs and a full estimating service for quotations from your drawings or outlines is available. Our quality assurance programme is in accordance with ISO9000 and is designed to suit our manufacturing processes. Computer control of manufacturing schedules ensures efficient delivery phased to meet customer requirements.

Loading Classifications
The loads applied to grating can usually be split into two basic categories: Point Loads These usually occur when motor driven trolleys or wheeled vehicles are run over the grating. For point load applications please contact your local Webforge Sales Office. Uniformly Distributed Loads (UDL) Uniformly distributed loads are more commonly used for general walkway and flooring applications. Most standards relate the loads that floors have to withstand in this format. Some common applications are listed below. WEBFORGE LOAD TYPES Type 1 Type 2 Type 3 Type 4 Type 4a Type 5 Type 5a 7.5 LOAD KPA 2.5 3 4 5 DEFLECTION MM 5 5 5 5 10 5 10 APPLICATION Maintenance walkways & areas with no public access. Pedestrian traffic, residential use. Pedestrian traffic, public, commercial and crowd use. General factories and workshops, motor rooms, hand trolleys. General heavy loading areas, boiler rooms, heavy equipment areas. AS1170 STANDARD APPLICABLE AS1657

Slip Resistance
With the requirement to provide safe places of work, the slip resistance of the flooring and walkway products needs to be considered. On steeply sloping walkways between 150 and 200 cleats can be used to improve slip resistance. The standard surface uses plain flat edge bar Code P - Plain but to increase slip resistance further the following points should be considered: Steel & Aluminium Serrated grating can be specified. Serrated grating is when the top of the loadbars are notched. To specify use the Code S - Serrated. In addition both steel and aluminium grating can improve their slip resistance by setting the direction of walking over the floor parallel to the loadbar span. Cross rods can be spaced at 100mm centres for better grip. Fibreglass Grating FRP grating is provided with an antiskid surface. This is a coarse grit that is bonded to the top surfaces of the grating. Expanded Metal Expanded metal slip resistance is improved if the direction of walking coincides with the nominal short way of the mesh.

Types of Treatment
Steel grating is available galvanised to AS/NZS4680 - Code G, to protect against corrosion, or bitumen dipped - Code B, or left untreated - Code U. Aluminium flooring can be Anodised - Code A, Powder Coated - Code PC or left as Mill Finish - Code M. Expanded metal can be supplied untreated - Code U or hot dipped galvanised to the above standard - Code G.

How To Order Flooring

1. Select the flooring pattern type required from the product range by referring to the loading classification data and pattern types on pages 2 and 3. 2. Nominate the material type code required by referring to the material options on page 1. 3. Specify the slip resistance top required by referring to the information on page 2. 4. Specify the type of treatment required by referring to the information on page 2. 5. Specify whether the grating is to be banded or just cut to size. 6. Nominate the number of panels required and provide dimensions for width and length of each panel. 7. Where large floor areas are required provide drawing of area to be covered showing: a) All dimensions. b) Load bar direction (Span). c) Section size and location of support steel. d) Location and size of cut outs and removable areas. e) Location of kick flats, nosings and splices at penetrations. 8. Where fasteners are needed clients to indicate the type of fastening required (see page 31).

Span Direction
Most grating and expanded metal needs to be supported in a specific way. The direction that the loadbars run is the important direction for grating and is usually referred to as the span. For expanded metal the span is in the direction of the strands. Span is always the last dimension given when referencing a panel size. Grating and expanded metal has to be supported in the span direction and does not require support on all four sides as is the case with floorplate.

The standard tread lengths are 750mm and 900mm and can be bolt in type or weld in type. The steel and stainless steel tread widths are 245mm or 285mm. The narrow tread width is used when the stringer member is a small section or the stair angle is steep. The standard bolt in end plates for the treads are shown on Page 7. The aluminium tread widths are 245mm or 275mm. The FRP tread widths are 234mm or 272mm. Treads are made from C325MS (serrated) for steel. Treads are made from A325AP (plain) for aluminium. Treads are made from G386IGGR for isopthalic FRP or G386VGY for vinylester FRP with an antiskid surface. Expanded metal is not commonly used as a tread material. Twist rods are purposely non aligned for safety reasons.

Nosing
Webforge recommends that steel, aluminium and stainless steel stair treads are fitted with an abrasive grit yellow nosing. FRP treads are supplied with a black antiskid nosing. This complies with the safety requirements that the edge of the tread should be clearly visible against the background and the tread surface should be slip resistant. Other nosing are available on request.

For 3mm loadbars subtract 2mm from the table widths. Widths can vary due to the manufacturing process (Tolerance -0 +10).

Notes: 1. The standard lengths of all panels are 6000mm. 2. The weight of fabricated grating increases with the addition of fittings, banding & treatment. The following % increases are a guide only: A&B Pattern - 12%, C&D Pattern - 14%, F Pattern 16%. 3. The table on page 20 has been arranged in increasing strength order. 4. U = Safe superimposed uniformly distributed load in KPA (100kg/sqm = 0.98KPa) 5. D = Deflection in millimetres for the load U. 6. Mass is calculated in the untreated condition. 7. Loads are calculated in accordance with an allowable bending stress of 171.6 MPa. 8. Loadbars are assumed to be simply supported. 9. Webforge reserves the right to use alternative section sizes provided this does not affect the performance of the product.

Grating Terminology T E C H N I C A L D ATA

LOAD BAR (Bearing Bar)

Uniform load carrying bar spanning across supporting members.

NOSING BAR
A member attached to or on the leading edge of a stair tread to assist slip resistance.

CROSS ROD (Steel)

Uniform rod round or square twisted steel forged into and at right angles to the load bar.

KICK PLATE
Heavy section flat bar welded to ends or sides of panels and around cut outs, etc. when specified. Top edge to be 100mm above grating generally.

CROSS ROD (Aluminium)

Uniform square rod swaged into load bar.

EDGE BAR (Banding Bar)

Trimming bar, generally of same size and welded to ends of load bars across panel bars and around notches and penetrations (if any).

CUT OUTS
Grating areas removed from panel to permit passage or installation of pipes, plant and structural and handrail items.

LENGTH OF PANEL (Span)

Overall dimension of a panel measured parallel with load bar. Indicated by this symbol

GROSS AREA
The total area of grating as shown on drawings using overall width and length dimensions of grating. The gross area is always the area calculated for invoicing purposes.

WIDTH OF PANEL
Overall dimension of a panel measured at right angles to the load bars. Always called Width even if greater than the length. The width of a panel will always be to the nearest load bar unless specifically stated on the order requirements. See table on page 19.

Fabrication Welding
Banding bars and attachments are welded with minimum 3mm fillet to one side of: every 5th loadbar on A&B Pattern grating. every 4th load bar on C&D Pattern grating. every 3rd load bar on F Pattern grating.

SERRATIONS
Small notches made in the top edge of the load bar to assist in slip resistance.

FRP Grating
FRP Grating can be manufactured from two resin systems - Type I (Green) uses isopthalic resin with class 1 flame spread rating of 25 or less, while providing excellent corrosion resistance over a broad range of chemicals. Type V (Yellow) uses vinylester resin base with class 1 flame spread rating of 25 or less, providing superior corrosion resistance to acidic environments and moderate resistance to caustic and solvent applications. Additional colours are available on request. FRP is supplied in standard panels 1220 x 3660mm or fabricated to customers specific requirements Weight of standard panels 25mm thick 51 kg 38mm thick 82 kg Open area 70% Bars are nominally 6mm thick One mesh pattern size 38 x 38mm square

Integral Construction
1. Integral, onepiece construction increases loadbearing capabilities. 2. Load applied to a Webforge FRP bar transferred to adjoining bearing bars, assisting in load distribution on the grating as well as on the support structure.

3. Square grid patterns benefit from integral onepiece construction. Smooth resinrich vertical surfaces and tapered bars allow all debris to fall through. 4. Continuous glass fibre strand in alternating layers thoroughly wetted with polyester resin for excellent corrosion resistance. 5. AntiSkid Surface. The top surface has bonded coarse grit to provide excellent skid resistance.

Raised Expanded Metal

Expanded metal is supplied as it comes off the machine. The strands and knuckles are set at a uniform angle to the plane of the sheet. This adds strength and rigidity, allows air circulation, and distributes the load on the metal to the supporting frames. Expanded metal is one continuous, single sheet of mesh, produced when the sheet is sheared and stretched but is left intact at the 'knuckles'. Available in a variety of thicknesses, with differing sizes and designs of the mesh. Because there are no welds or joins, it operates as a structural member that distributes loads evenly over a wider area. High strength to weight ratio makes it technically applicable in many engineering industrial and ornamental applications. No loose strands or welds means minimal wear through constant exposure to natural elements or other normal movements. Fire resistant and vermin proof, it also provides an anti-slip surface for ramps, catwalks and stair treads. Allows good visibility and the easy passage of air, heat, light and sound while ensuring security and protection. Expanded metal is supplied in standard panel lengths of 2300 or 3000mm and standard panel widths of 600, 750, 900 and 1200mm or fabricated to customers specific requirements.
