Interviewing Basquiat
Jean and Maureen stood before a painting of a man in a wheelchair. She had asked
him where his ideas came from, and hed told her the story, spying the man on the
street as he yelled at a boy to be put in the sun, his Cajun accent, giving him money,
the old mans crazy gratitude. She inspected the image before her and wrote in her
notebook: chair like a throne/old man almost a god/head primitive mask/frighten-
ing defiant. Now she said: Help me to understand--how do you actually make a
painting? The process.
[] I paint to music, he said to her, and raised his eyes into the air, [] I catch
a rhythm and I let it go in there, he gestured toward the picture of the old man. The
writer took notes; leveled another look at an early work that he had brought out for her,
a painting bearing several furiously scribbled skull-headed figures, with a background
teeming with local tempests of brushstrokes and wordings. Your work has changed
so much, she said, with a glance at him that looked for comment or affirmation.
I think Im more economical now, he said, after his own gaze at the familiar skull
heads. Every line means something. And there are things I know now, things that
have become important to me. Im interested in painting the black person. Hes the
protagonist in most of my paintings.
Tell me about that.
I realized I never saw any paintings with black people in them.
Maureen noticed the book lying on the table, titled Flash of the Spirit.
Youre reading that? she said.
Yeah, Jean said. How the African beliefs came to America, the Carribean. Its a
great book.
Your work shows a lot of African sources. The masks, she said.
Recently, yeah. Not early on, Jean said. Early on I was more interested in Picasso,
Twombly, DuBuffet.

Should schools allow advertising on school buses?
by Linda Angelo | The Flint Journal
Saturday September 06, 2008, 4:15 AM
GOODRICH, Michigan
[] Its a touchy issue and one thats been met with controversy in almost every
school district across the country that has tried it.
Critics say kids riding the bus are a captive audience who have no control over what
they see on their daily commute to and from school.
Supporters, though, argue school districts can hand-pick the advertisers and the
revenue gained can help offset budget cuts that would effect the classroom.
In South Carolina, the issue caused such an uproar that lawmakers passed a law
banning advertising on school buses.
Locally, the Goodrich School District is among those approached by Crossroads Mar-
keting and Consulting to give the concept a try.
Im not real big on advertising on buses, thats my personal opinion, but the district
does have to take a look at different ways of increasing revenues, Superintendent
Larry Allen said.
Id have to wait and see how much additional revenues we would get before we
would make a decision one way or the other.
Michael Eichhorn, president of Crossroads Marketing and Consulting, said his company
began approaching school districts after it learned that bus advertising was listed on
the state Department of Educations Web site as one of the top 10 ways schools can
raise revenues. []
Every place we go were exposed to messages. At least in this situation we can
control the message.
Still, Mark Griffiths, a parent in the Goodrich district, opposes the idea.
I dont care how much money it would generate, there should be no advertising on
the buses, he told the Board of Education.
These kids are bombarded with advertising already. The buses should be a safe
haven. Every time you turn on the TV theres advertising for kids I dont think we
need any more of it. []
Sheryl Schoenemann, who has three children in the Goodrich School District, said
she wouldnt mind if advertisements were placed inside the buses.
I think it would be OK as long as it is age appropriate, she said.
Parent Wendy Edgett isnt bothered by it either.
It needs to promote something positive for the kids, not just another clothing ad or
Nintendo game, she said. They see enough of that. []

Rumplestiltskin
Once there was a poor man who had a beautiful daughter. To make himself look impor-
tant, he said to the King I have a daughter who can turn straw into gold. The King
said to the man, bring her to-morrow to my palace, and I will try what she can do.
And when the girl was brought to him he took her into a room which was quite full
of straw, gave her a spinning-wheel and said, Now set to work, and if by to-morrow
morning early you have not spun this straw into gold during the night, you must die.
Thereupon he himself locked up the room, and left her in it alone. So there sat the
poor mans daughter, she had no idea how straw could be turn into gold, and she
grew more and more miserable, until at last she began to weep.
But all at once the door opened, and in came a little man, and said, Good evening,
young lady; why are you crying so? Alas! answered the girl, I have to spin straw
into gold, and I do not know how to do it. What will you give me, said the mani-
kin, if I do it for you? My necklace, said the girl. The little man took the necklace,
seated himself in front of the spinning wheel, and whirr, whirr, whirr, three turns,
and the reel was full of gold; then he put another on, and whirr, whirr, whirr, three
times round, and the second was full too. And so it went on until the morning, when
all the straw was spun, and all the reels were full of gold. By daybreak the King was
already there, and when he saw the gold he was astonished and delighted, but his
heart became only more greedy.

The violence of fairy tales
In my English classes at Stuyvesant High School the students agreed that nothing on
television or out of Hollywood could equal, in violence and horror, the story of Hansel
and Gretel. Jonathan Greenberg spoke out.[] How can we tell children how Hansel
and Gretel were locked up by that witch who wanted to fatten and cook them? And
is there anything more horrible than the scene where they pushed her into the fire?
Shes a mean old cannibal of a witch and deserves what she got but wouldnt all this
give a kid nightmares?
Lisa Berg said these stories have been around for hundreds of years. We all grew up
with them and enjoyed them and survived them, so what is the big deal.
Rose Kane agreed with Jonathan. When she was little, she had nightmares over Han-
sel and Gretel and maybe that was because she herself had a new stepmother. []
After she heard the Hansel and Gretel story form her first grade teacher, she refused
to go anywhere with her stepmother unless her father was with them. That would
infuriate her father so much hed threatened her with all kinds of punishment. You go
with your stepmother, Rose, or youre grounded for ever. Which, of course, proved
he was completely dominated by the stepmother, who had a carbuncle on her chin,
like all the stepmothers in fairy tales, a carbuncle with little sprouting hairs that she
was always plucking.
Everyone in the class seemed to have an opinion on the Hansel and Gretel story and
the main question was , Would you tell this story to your children? I suggested that the
pros and antis separate and sit on opposite sides of the room and it was remarkable
to see that the class was split down the middle. I suggested also that there should be
a moderator for this discussion but passions were running high, no one was neutral
on the matter, and Id have to take the job myself.
It was then minutes before I could calm the hullabaloo in the room. The anti-Hansel
and Gretel side said their children could be damaged so badly it would lead to huge
costs in psychotherapy. Oh, , said []the pro side, come off it. No one is in therapy
because of fairy tales. Every Kid in America and Europe grew up with these stories.
The antis brought up the violence of Little Red Riding Hood, the wolf swallowing
the grandmother without even chewing her and the meanness of the stepmother
in Cinderella. You wonder how a kid could survive hearing or reading any of this.
Lisa Berg said something so remarkable it caused a sudden silence in the room. She
said kids have stuff in their heads so dark and deep its beyond our comprehension.
Wow, someone said.
They knew Lisa had hit on something.
