Masthead - the masthead is in the largest font on the page to make it stand out.

The colour used helps it to conform to the clearly recognisable theme that is used across the front cover. The fact it is covered by the head of Kanye West (the main image) shows it is a recognisable name as people still know what it is with only two letters visible. Headers gives readers an incentive to read the magazine. Plays on the artists name The Notorious B.I.G. As a very recognisable artist in the industry, people would be very eager to find something out about him. This clever play on words displays the genre and style of the magazine a hip hop gossip magazine. The colours also follow the conventional theme used on the front cover. Cover Lines the cover lines give a sneak peek as to the contents of the magazine. It names 6 different artists which would give the reader an incentive to read as the audience know there will be a lot of gossip inside the magazine. This also shows it as a big magazine as they are able to provide information about multiple celebrities. The cover lines about Kanye West is in a much bigger font size to highlight hat it is the main story in the magazine. By quoting the I Am Rap sentence, it highlights his personality as an artist and his confidence in himself which could cause his audience to aspire to be like him. Rule Of Thirds the rule of thirds highlight the key things on this front cover. As shown by the lines I have placed in myself, the main facial features of Kanye west are placed in the direct centre of the page. His eyes are looking straight, almost making eye contact with the reader, allowing them to feel a connection. The reason behind this would be to entice the reader and make them want to buy the magazine. Page Zones in the primary optical area (POA), there is the letter V and the word Kanye. These are the two things on the page that would cause someone to buy the magazine due to the fact that the V is easily recognisable as that of the Vibe logo and Kanye is known as one of the biggest or maybe even one of the most influential rappers in the industry. The top right dead area also contains a letter of the Vibe logo, and the bottom left has the dateline and the website. The terminal area contains the words celebrating the best music in history. This is used here to promote the level of how good the magazine is and to make the reader buy it. Colour Scheme there are 3 main colours used on the page; pink, blue and black. As mentioned before, these colours follow a recognisable theme across the whole page. The colours blue and black relate to a male audience, implying it is mostly them who it is aimed at. But the pink displays that females are also welcome to read it. Main Image - By using Kanye West, and highlighting that the magazine contains 50 of his top songs, and 10 of his worst, would appeal to more readers. This is due to the fact he is such a big artist, he is a trend setter. He comes with such a big fan base so it would potentially cause the magazine to sell more issues to create a bigger turnover. Putting him in the centre of the page makes him the main focus of the cover and highlights his importance in the issue. Target Audience judging by most of the colours used, and the main artist on the front cover, it seems that the magazine would be aimed at young male adults (1520). But the colour pink stereotypically relates to females, giving a hint that females are also welcome to read and there may be stories on interest to them.

Main Image the main image on this page is an image of Florence Welch (Florence and The Machine), 2009s biggest success story. This image isnt particularly provocative but it does use male gaze elements by displaying the skin of her legs and having her sitting in a welcoming manner. Another element of male gaze that is used is the cone bra which provides a provocative aura to the image. The amount of red used on the page connotes love and lust, further relating to her gender and appealing to the male gaze. Also, Florence Welch isnt a hip hop artist, but she is still in the mainstream charts. This shows that the magazine does welcome other genres despite it being a, predominantly, hip hop magazine. Font/Copy the font used on this double page spread could weakly be described as fancy or posh. But this font brings a level of sophistication to the magazine and coincides with the female artist on the page as fonts of this type can stereotypically be related to women. With this sophistication, it shows that the hip hop industry isnt all about money and doesnt only contain male artists, but it welcomes women with open arms. The use of USA in the background shows the reader that this is an American magazine and that the majority if not all of the articles inside will be about American artists/American news. Colour the page mainly uses 3 colours; white, black and red. These colours all have connotations of different meanings and bring an overall effect to the page. The colour red, used on the ribbon and her hair colour, as previously mentioned connotes love and lust, but also danger. This could be representing the personality of the artist implying she is sensitive but also has a fiery side to her. The white represents innocence and has connotations of angels and heaven. This relates to the fact she is a female artist as women are represented as the more innocent of the two genders. Finally, the black represents sophistication. By making her outfit black the photographers have shown her to be a sophisticated but still sexy woman.

Masthead the word contents is stylised, which gives the magazine an edge. It is in a large font so it stands out and the colour follows a synchronised theme on the page. Features the features section gives the reader an insight to what is included in the magazine, and also seems to give a brief description as to what it is about. This gives the reader an incentive to read on. Main Image once again Kanye West is used in this issue of the magazine, but this time the whole top half of his body is included. This displays what he is wearing, putting him across as a fashion icon. The fact there is a females hand reaching around him grabbing his heart, which is coloured red to stand out, implies a deeper story behind what people are currently seeing him as, providing interest to the reader, it also highlights the issue of love, subliminally telling the audience that he is in love and one woman has got hold over his heart. The fact he is making direct eye contact with the camera, makes it seem like he is making eye contact with the reader, providing a connection between the two. Colours the colours used throughout the page create a recognisable theme. The fact that dark colours are used hints a sense of mystery behind the artist in the main image. The fact that the colour red stands out implies that Kanye west has a strong heart and a story about his love to tell. The colour red connotes love and lust, but also fire and danger. Rule Of Thirds- as shown by the boxes I have drawn onto the picture, Kanye Wests face is placed directly onto a hotspot, making him one of the key features on the page. The V for Vibe is inside the primary optical area meaning it is the first thing you see when you look at the page.
