INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS TO FIT C5 BRAKES ON A C4 CATALOG #22500 (85-87) and 22501 (88-96)

READ THOROUGHLY BEFORE BEGINNING!

VBP offers two C5 upgrade kits for 1985-87 (#22500) and 1988-96 (#22501) Corvettes. Both kits include: calipers, Hawk HPS high performance pads, VBP 13 sport rotors, DOT stainless steel brake lines, Hi-performance brake fluid, new brackets, hardware and instructions. Kit #22500 includes on pair of 17 wheel adapters with attachment lugs for 85-87 applications. These kits work well with the 9.5 x 17 A-Mold factory wheel. This wheel was available for 1994-95 ZR-1s and 1996 Corvettes. Consult your VBP representative if you have any questions about proper wheel fit. Installation takes about two hours. The most critical phase of this project is properly bleeding new brake fluid through the C5 calipers. Any trapped air can cause a spongy pedal, faulty ABS performance or loss of braking. We recommend that an experienced mechanic perform this task. Step 1 After loosening all of the lug nuts, lift the car and place a safety stand under the frame to secure the car as you work. Step 2 Remove the wheel, and the two 13/16 retaining bolts that secure the original brake caliper, as shown in Figure 1. Pull the old caliper off the rotor and set it on top of the control arm. Do not remove the brake line at this time.

Step 3 Remove the old rotor as shown in Figure 2. Step 4 Install the new VBP sport rotor. Note that each rotor is marked RF, LF. Step 5 Install the included VBP wheel adapter on all 85-87 Corvettes as shown in Figure 3. This ensures the proper wheel offset for 17 wheels. Torque adapter lugs to 90 ft lbs. Step 6 - Install the bracket onto the C4 spindle and secure with two 13/16 bolts from the kit as shown in Figure 4. Torque to 170 ft lbs. Step 7 Install the lower pad anti-rattle clip onto the caliper bracket as shown in Figure 5.

Step 9 - Install the new Hawk brake pads on the inside and outside of the caliper bracket as shown in Figure 6. Hold the upper pad anti-rattle bracket in place during pad installation.
Step 10-Install the supplied anti-rattle pad clip into the caliper as shown in Figure 7. Once it is snapped in place the caliper is ready to be installed.

Step 11 - Install the caliper from the bottom first as shown in Figure 8. Slide the caliper over the pads and push onto the rotor. Step 12 - Insert the two 15 mm guide pins into the caliper. Insert a thin walled 16mm open-end wrench on the guide pin bolt while tightening the guide pin as shown in Figure 9. Tighten the 15mm guide pin to 25 ft lbs of torque. Step 13 - Remove the brake line retaining clip and Remove the old brake line from the 12 mm steel brake line as shown in Figure 10.

Step 14 - Reinstall the new line and tighten to 20 ft lbs of torque. Use a wrench on the top And a 12 mm wrench on the bottom. Do not over tighten. Step 15- Insert the 15 mm bolt into the stainless steel line. Install two cooper washers included in the kit. Install brake onto the back of the new caliper as shown in Figure 11. Tighten to 20 ft lbs of torque. Step 16 - Remove the cap on the master cylinder reservoir. Bled the brakes according to the GM service manual while adding clean brake fluid to the reservoir. Step 17 - The project is completed. Step 18- Reinstall the wheels and torque the lug nuts to 100 ft lbs of torque. Road test the vehicle and take time to carefully bed the new brake pads in before making aggressive stops and then enjoy your C5 brakes!
