Fighting oppression and exploitation The real tradition of International Womens Day
INTERNATiONAL Womens Day was born out of struggle over 100 years ago. Socialists in Europe were inspired by the struggles of women textile workers, mostly recent immigrants, who marched through Manhattan in New York in 1908. They called for the vote for women and trade union rights. Their actions opened up two years of magnicent struggles. Womens oppression is still a reality today. Women are paid less than men and suffer most heavily from the Tories cuts. Women are blamed for rape, womens bodies are commodied and judged and abortion rights are under attack. Sexism is common on university campuses. But women are also at the forefront of the struggle. From Egypt to Greece, India to Britain, women have played a leading role in the ghtback against sexual violence, for abortion rights and in defence of public services. Come to this event to celebrate International Womens Day, and discuss the socialist tradition of ghting for womens liberation.
