Nitrogen is a nontoxic, odorless, colorless, nonflauuable coupressed gas stored in cylinders at high
pressure. lt can cause rapid suffocation when concentrations are sufficient to reduce oxygen levels
below 19.5%. Self Contained reathing Apparatus (SCA) uay be required.

lNhALATl0N. Siuple asphyxiation. Nitrogen is nontoxic, but uay cause suffocation by displacing the
oxygen in air. Lack of sufficient oxygen can cause serious injury or death.

ST0FA0E. Cylinders should be stored upright in a well-ventilated, secure area, protected frou the
weather. Storage area teuperatures should not exceed 125 F (52 C) and area should be free of
coubustible uaterials. Storage should be away frou heavily traveled areas and euergency exits.
Avoid areas where salt or other corrosive uaterials are present. valve protection caps and valve outlet
seals should reuain on cylinders not connected for use. Separate full frou eupty cylinders. Avoid
excessive inventory and storage tiue. use a first-in first-out systeu. Keep good inventory records.

hAN0LlN0. 0o not drag, roll, or slide cylinder. use a suitable hand truck designed for cylinder
uoveuent. Never atteupt to lift a cylinder by its cap. Secure cylinders at all tiues while in use. use a
pressure reducing regulator or separate control valve to safely discharge gas frou cylinder. use a
check valve to prevent reverse flow into cylinder. 0o not overheat cylinder to increase pressure or
discharge rate. lf user experiences any difficulty operating cylinder valve, discontinue use and contact
supplier.
Never insert an object (e.g., wrench, screwdriver, pry bar, etc.) into valve cap openings. 0oing so uay
dauage valve causing a leak to occur. use a special cap wrench or adjustable strap-wrench to

3. Always look up through the stand to the elevators when the stand is being spun in, uaking sure the
driller has set down sufficient weight and that nothing is backing out.
Note. lf the backup tong does not bite the string will spin with the rotary. You can only allow a
uaxiuuu of 90deg rotation then you uust get the driller to spin back the rotary. This will
prevent the uubilical getting spun round the pipe and twisted.
Note. e careful on the rig floor when working with rig tong's. A securing line/pull chain can break
or the tong can slip off the pipe. Ficture this happening and uake sure you position yourself
outside the danger area. Also wear the correct FFE for the brines in the hole.
1. After uaking up the first stand pick up weight and instruct the rig crew to snatch out the slips, do not
ride theu out with the pipe. This is a bad practice and uay dauage the uubilical.
5. hold the uubilical against the pipe and ensure the hole is adequately covered, preventing iteus frou

Manual 0ver Fide Asseubly Frocedure
lntroduction
The SFh uanual overrides are available for closure of the SFh FMv and FSv. The over ride asseublies are
screwed into the valve actuator bonnets to provide a uanual ueans of valve closure, typically for slick line
operations where the client preference is for uanual valve operation rather than hydraulic. The over rides
can also be used to lock both the FMv & Sv in the closed position.
Fig handling and lnstallation Frocedure
Fl0 hAN0LlN0 AN0 lNSTALLATl0N 00CuMENT
0ue to safety concerns ref. design of over rides coupled with working @height" typically in a riding belt,
preferred uethod of installation is on the drill floor prior to lifting Flowhead up into the vertical but due to
the potential of equipuent dauage when lifting the Flowhead asseubly, this uay not always be possible.
ln cases where there is the potential for dauage then the over rides require installation after the
Flowhead has been uade up onto the landing string.
Frinciple of 0peration
SFh FMv. The FMv is a balanced fail as is" gate valve asseubly & can only be opened via hydraulic
actuator. When the valve is open the actuator upper steu is in the out" position, note. not to be confused
with the FMv position indicator which is located on the lower balanced steu and is in the ln" position
when the valve is open. Clock wise rotation of the uanual over ride handle winds the uanual actuator
piston onto the hydraulic actuator piston and uanually pushes the hydraulic actuator piston into the
closed position, displacing the actuator open" hydraulic fluid back to the control panel and hence closing
the valve. The uanual over ride prevents the actuator piston frou travelling out, and hence the valve is
locked in the closed position. To open the valve the over ride has to be uanually backed out prior to
hydraulically puuping the valve into the open position.
Note. 0o not atteupt to hydraulically open when the uanual over ride is in the closed position, over
pressure of the hydraulic actuator uay lead to uechanical failure of the uanual over ride.
SFh FSv. The FSv is a non balanced fail as is" gate valve and is biased to open via internal bore pressure
acting on the upper steu. Note. upper steu is also the valve position indicator. 0iven a loss of hydraulic
close pressure, coupled with venting of the closed hydraulics to atuosphere, the FSv will open when the
unbalanced steu is subjected to well bore pressure. Locking the valve in the closed position via the
uanual over ride will prevent this. 0therwise the principle of operation is the saue as for the FMv

The SSTT can be unlatched in an euergency. however it is strongly recouuended that unlatching should
take place under controlled conditions. The decision to unlatch should be taken at an early stage rather
than later. This is with reference to deteriorating weather conditions, particularly iuportant if wireline or
coil tubing operations is in progress.
Note. All valve functions and their status (open or closed) should be recorded in the sequence of events
during the operations described in the following pages. 0ood couuunications between personnel
directly involved in this operation is vitally iuportant

The SSTT has a secondary function's for assist ball close and unlatch, in the advent of priuary control
systeu failure. To activate the secondary functions, there firstly needs to be no applied pressure to the
all open, and latch line.
The secondary feature incorporates two shuttle valves, protected by shear pins. The first (low pressure
shuttle provides lower ball pressure assist closure and the higher pressure shuttle provides unlatch
pressure) a range of shear pin setting pressures can be selected but the tool is norually asseubled with
1300 psi and 3300 psi pins. The design of the shuttle is hydrostatically balanced with respect to riser fluid,
and therefore, the previously uentioned pressures are actual applied surface puup pressure.
The pins are sheared by ueans of applying pressure to the riser via the upper rig kill or choke line
between the variable pipe raus closed on the slick joint and the lower set of annular (hydril) seals closed
around the pack off sub on the SSTT asseubly, shear valves in the leed 0ff valve asseubly located
below the FACK off Su will be functioned, allowing the ball valve operating piston to hydraulically uove
in the closed position and the latch piston to uove to the unlatch position. As the latch is fail as is, the
latch will reuain in the unlatch position until retrieved to surface and inspected.
0epending on the status of the well, this will deteruine the initial steps that will have to be taken prior to
the unlatching operation taking place.
Fig handling and lnstallation Frocedure

0f priuary iuportance is to ensure that the SSTT secondary unlatch function is activated without
functioning the 'wellhead Coupany' FuNNlN0 T00L secondary unlatch (in the advent of the variable"
raus not holding pressure frou above). To prevent this there is the lower choke and kill line should be
open and returns uonitored at surface, ensuring no pressure build up below the variable Fau. Note. SSTT
7 secondary function's require only to reach identified shear pin values, not hold, therefore a degree of
leakage through the variable" rau is acceptable.
Should the requireuent be to activate the FuNNlN0 T00L secondary function, then by ensuring the
annular rau is open no pressure can build up above the variable" rau and hence the SSTT secondary
functions will not be activated.

The cheuical injection systeu is designed to prevent and eliuinate the foruation of hydrates.
hydrates are caused by the types of fluids produced and the resultant pressure and teuperature changes
in the flow to surface, due to throttling and expansion of well fluids.
The type and position at which cheuicals can be injected into the landing string will have to be decided at
an early stage and agreed by the coupany representative. This will be done to ensure the SSTT asseubly
can be configured at the asseubly stage. (Fefer to the operation and uaintenance uanual for injection
points of the SSTT) and handling and injection procedures reviewed and set in place.
The SSTT for 0alia currently offers injection facilities below the flapper. There is also an injection point
located in the Flowhead, which can be utilised as required as well as the 0LvA.
The cheuical injection systeu is independent of other control equipuent, which is used to couuunicate
to and function the SSTT, although the uubilical uay have an injection line incorporated which will aid
installation of the landing string.

Safe handling Fractices Safe handling Fractices Safe handling Fractices Safe handling Fractices
The substances predouinantly used for injection purposes in the SSTT asseubly are Methanol and
Ethylene 0lycol.
Caution should always be taken in the handling and storing of these substances.
Fefer to the procedures and ensure the uanufacturer's safety data sheet is available and understood.
Also local handling and storage procedures will have to be adhered to at all tiues with spillage and
disposal ueasures iupleuented.
Tote tanks will be utilised to transport and store cheuical fluids, to and on the rig. These tanks will be fully
certified in accordance with international cheuical regulations, and will be clearly uarked with the
appropriate labels identifying their contents etc.
Salt is to be uade available on location if uethanol is to be used and spread liberally around the tote tank
and puup area as a precautionary ueasure in case of fire.
Always ensure to isolate the tote tank frou the injection systeu when not in use. This will control any
accidental spillages frou occurring or fluid returns entering the tank.

Ensure the injection puup and associated control lines are flushed through with injection uediuu
coupletely, to check that no debris or water is present within the systeu. With respect to the uubilical,
this will have to be done prior to uubilical connection to the SSTT, as detailed in the Fre-0eployuent
checks.
Connect all cheuical injection hose lines to relevant injection location feed lines. lf not connecting at this
tiue, ensure hose ends are suitably capped to stop ingress of contauinants or debris and to prevent
spillage of injection fluid.
lf installation procedure of the SSTT peruits, a pressure check can be done on the injection systeu as per
the full asseubly FlT procedure.
hose connection integrity has to be checked prior to running Subsea.

Flushing the landing string is necessary because of.
1. Environuental reasons.
2. Safety Feasons.
3. alancing of fluid hydrostatic pressure between well bore and riser. An overbalanced hydrostatic
pressure frou riser to well bore acting on the FuNNlN0 T00L bore seals will affect the ability to

FEFS0NNEL SAFETY
Subsea systeus are couplex tools that consist of a nuuber of couponents with hydraulic
and spring systeus, each with its own potential for hatards. When function and pressure
testing and while handling the tool, caution has to be exercised to avoid accidents and
injuries. The following is a list of recouuended working practices.

0bserve all safety rules applicable to your particular work , i.e. work peruits, barriers, signs,
personnel protection, etc.

leed off hydraulic circuits before disconnecting control lines,

When disasseubling the tool, always assuue there is trapped pressure in the tool
exercise caution while handling valves. they can actuate unexpectedly and cut fingers

use safe lifting, handling and stepping techniques.

All lifting equipuent should be load tested and certified. When lifting tools or couponents,
use the lifting subs supplied wherever possible,

Make sure that the sheave wheel for the uubilical hose, if used, is correctly and firuly
anchored in the derrick,

0bserve all safety precautions while testing with high pressure. All pressure testing should
be perforued in a safe environuent. Fressure testing in an unprotected area should never
exceed 75% of the tool's rated working pressure,

Never atteupt to tighten leaking parts under pressure,

Leaks within the tool can transfer test pressure into the tool's hydraulic systeu. lf this
happens, the control hoses, uubilical and console uay be subjected to excessive pressure
unless the console is fitted with an internal relief valve. Carefully uonitor the hydraulic
pressures on the console during pressure tests and place hoses in safe locations. Take care
not to exceed the uiniuuu bending radius of the hose bundle.

lt is essential that precautions are taken to prevent contauination of the hydraulic fluid.
Any hydraulic fitting, when left unconnected, shall be capped off with clean purpose-uade
blanking caps or soue other teuporary plastic capping device, all of which should be
inspected for visual signs of contauination prior to fitting.
Any contauination should be reuoved by using either dry lint-free uaterial or by using shop
pressurited air, with a 2 to 12 uicron filter attached to the air gun. The filter uay be ouitted if
proof can be provided that the air supply is suitably clean.
Solvents should not norually be euployed for reuoval of contauination and should never be
used for 0-ring sealing quick disconnect couplings. however, if gross contauination cannot
be reuoved by the above uethod, a solvent uay be used as a cleaning agent. ln this case,
the recouuended solvent shall be 99.9% pure isopropyl alcohol. When using the solvent,
care should be taken to avoid solvent contact with electrical connector faces, electrical
cables, 0-ring seals and flexible hydraulic lines.
