.edu Website: www.jmiksche-itt.weebly.com Location: Lathrop Campus, Room T9 Time: Saturdays, 1:00 p.m. About the Instructor: I am a professional musician with a Bachelors and Masters in Music, and a Ph.D. in Anthropological Folklore Studies, with an emphasis in oral traditions in music. My hard rock band, Echo Chamber, plays a couple times a month around Modesto. Since January, Ive been rehearsing as a baritone with the Modesto Symphony Orchestra Chorus. Camping in the mountains, grilling in my backyard, jamming/recording with friends, and fishing are my favorite pastimes. Having fun, I believe, is essential, but so is getting your work done. About the Course: This course introduces fundamentals of, and differences in, the morals and rules of conduct among individuals. Focus is on the identification and analysis of a variety of theoretical moral constructs and their application to individual and personal behavior. Class Conduct: Be courteous and respectful. Participation is part of the grade. All exams/quizzes are open book. Please label your assignments appropriately so you receive credit for your work. UNIT TWO: Consequentialist and Nonconsequentialist Theories of Morality, 9/28/13 Reading: Chapters 2 & 3

Key Concepts: consequentialist, nonconsequentialist, psychological egoism, ethical egoism, Utilitarianism, Intuitionism, Care Ethics, Kants Duty Ethics, etc. Class Activities: Powerpoint for Chapters 2 & 3, Intuitionism (Trustworthy Faces), Throwing Stones, Ethical Words Worksheet, Stealing & Looting (graded), Universal Egoism vs. Utilitarian Ethics, turn in homework. Homework: Care Ethics paper, prepare for Unit Three. UNIT THREE: Virtue Ethics, 10/5/13 Reading: Chapter 4 Key Concepts: Virtue Ethics, foundations of virtue ethics, Nicomachean Ethics, Confucian role ethics, the ideal virtuous person, etc. Class Activities: Review of Units 1 & 2, Employee Monitoring, Ethical Words Worksheet, Bullying, Check for Understanding (graded), turn in homework. Homework: Project 1 due next week (Discuss three ethical theories, and give personal examples for each. 800 words, double-spaced.) UNIT FOUR: Absolutism vs. Relativism, 10/12/13 Reading: Chapter 5 Key Concepts: Cultural relativism & absolutism, proposition, truth, falsity, state of affairs, manners, taboos, etc. Class Activities: Review of Unit 3, Open Book Quiz, reflection on students 3-theories papers, Anthropology and Ethics, Ethical Words Worksheet (EWW), temporary marriage discussion, death & accounting (in-class writing, graded). Homework: Paper on absolutism vs. relativism (Answer questions offered from Instructor, 250 words.), prepare for Unit 5. UNIT FIVE: Freedom and Determinism, 10/19/13 Reading: Chapters 6 & 10 Key Concepts: freedom, determinism, universal causation, fatalism, predestination, indeterminism, free will, existentialism, etc. Class Activities: Review, philosophical FB, freedom and happiness (in-class writing), EWW, Our Brothers Keepers, End of Life Decisions. Homework: Answer Discussion Questions #1 on page 104 and on page 222 and respond to Exercises for Review #3, and #8 on page 222, prepare for Unit 6.

UNIT SIX: Reward and Punishment, 10/26/13 Reading: Chapters 7 & 12 Key Concepts: Distributive justice, retributivism, egalitarian criterion, etc. Class Activities: Review, A Very Present Help, EWW, Torture (in-class graded). Homework: Project 2 due next week (Choose a philosopher from Unit 6. Give me a brief biography, their philosophy, and an example of how their philosophy may or may not work. 800 words, doublespaced). UNIT SEVEN: Moral Systems, 11/9/13 Reading: Chapter 8 Key Concepts: Act vs. Rule, life principle, conflict resolution, logical consistency, situational priority, principle of individual freedom, etc. Class Activities: Review, Quiz 2 (Units 4-6, open book), EWW, The Rule of Law, Building a Moral System (graded group work). Homework: Write one-page paper on the moral system you designed in class today (500 words), prepare for Unit 8. UNIT EIGHT: Ethical Issues in Medicine, 11/16/13 Reading: Chapter 14, Appendix 6 Key Concepts: Bioethics, patient rights, stem cell research, human experimentation, paternalism, etc. Class Activities: Review, The Tuskegee Experiment, EWW, Whose Body is it Anyway, Cloning (graded). Homework: Two paragraphs on what stem cell research is, and your opinion on it. At least 250 words. Bring a magazine advertisement for next week. Prepare for Unit 9. UNIT NINE: Business and Media Ethics, 11/23/13 Reading: Chapter 15, Appendix 7 Key Concepts: Prima facie rights, journalisms ideal, sexual harassment, affirmative action, discrimination, etc. Class Activities: Review, Analyzing Advertisements, EWW, The Rights and Duties of a Business (in-class graded writing). Homework: Prepare for Unit 10.

UNIT TEN: Environmental Ethics, 11/30/13 Reading: Chapter 16, Appendix 8 Key Concepts: Environmental issues, flora rights, dominion over nature, sentientism, platonic dualism, moral obligations to nature, etc. Class Activities: Review, Discussing Nature, EWW, The Rights of Non-Human Animals (in-class graded).
