Former Middle East Region Vice Commander, North Carolina Wing Commander, and Squadron Commander of the Winston -Salem Composite Squadron, Colonel Tink Schaffer, made a guest appearance to interact with cadets this weekend. Col Schaffer told cadets that as a young boy he wanted to be in the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), but wasnt old enough, so instead he joined the Boy Scouts. Once he reached the age of 13 he joined CAP. Col Schaffer stated, Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts are great, but its not the Civil Air Patrol. The first encampment he attended was one of his best CAP experiences. The encampment was two weeks of classes, which taught and shaped his leadership abilities. Three years later he was awarded the highest cadet award at the time, the coveted Certificate of Proficiency. It was the highest achievement cadets could earn from 1949-1964. CAP also helped him in his career. You can be what you want to be, but being in CAP gives you a leg up in life. Col Schaffers experiences in CAP provided the leadership foundation for his education and career. Cadets enjoyed learning how CAP has changed over the years.

L EARNING THE ROPES

Airmen participated in a variety of classes this weekend, from shoe-shining and pressing their uniforms, to team-building exercises, to developing personal goals. In the Tips on Encampment class, cadets learned that encampment is a great experience and is a jump start for their CAP career. Some cadets have trouble spending a week away from home, and that stress can take a toll on them. Capt Michel advised cadets, Just take it one day at a time. In the Customs and Courtesies class cadets learned how to call the room to attention, proper saluting etiquette, and how to respect the uniform they wear. Cadets can now go back to their home squadrons and begin to share their knowledge with other new cadets.

L EARNING TO LEAD
Cadet NCO school helps cadets make the transition from followership to leadership. C/Maj Knapp said, It is our goal to train these NCOs to be our replacements in the future. Instead of learning to participate, they learned how to lead activities such as PT, drill, and class instruction. In the Speech Presentation class, NCO flight cadets showed their ability to write a seven to ten minute speech on a given topic, after being given 30 minutes to plan. Cadets did an amazing job, not only preparing their speeches, but presenting them as well. C/ TSgt Church was given the topic support the boss. She stated, Do what is right and the boss will support you. Cadets learned about interpersonal skills in their Teambuilding class, and how to handle difficult situations with professionalism. Sometimes they will be confronted with obstacles, but they still need to handle themselves in a professional way while still getting the job done. In the Core Values class cadets discussed CAPs values of integrity first, volunteer service, excellence in all we do, and respect, and how they relate to being a cadet NCO.

COMMANDERS CORNER
by Major Staples
Greetings everyone. Myself and C/Lt Col Mohler had a vision for this weekend. Our vision was to prepare the way for the leaders of tomorrow; through basic instruction with the Great Start program and a Non Commissioned Officer School, I am proud to report we have successfully provided them the foundation we were hoping. I couldn't be more proud with the success of the students and the wealth of knowledge they have absorbed. Thank you students for sharing the weekend with us, and to the staff for providing the instruction that I have come to expect from working with you. GREAT JOB!
