What is a Projector?

What is a Projector?
A projector is a device that integrates a light source, optics system, electronics and display for the purpose of projecting an image from a computer or video device onto a wall or screen for large image viewing. There are hundreds of products available in the market and they are differentiated by their resolution, performance and features. These devices attached to a computer or video device as you would connect a monitor.

Notebook PC, Desktop PC

VCR, DVDP TV(Digital TV)

Digital camera, Camcorder

Usage

Usage
- Companies, public organizations: Images on PC can be directly projected onto a large screen without the disturbance occurring when using OHP. The projector can be used for a variety of purposes - for meeting or presentation, and video projections can be used for PR or training. Now we also have ultra-compact products allowing presentation-on-the-move. - Schools, training centers, churches: Various educational multimedia data and videos can be directly projected onto a large screen for the purpose of education. - Others: Enjoy movies at home, small theater or cafeteria. The projector can also be used at exhibitions for a wide variety of purposes. Presentation (Office etc) Office Education Home Theater Entertainment Etc.

Event Education (School, University etc) (Exhibition hall etc.)

PRT type Projector

A PRT type projector adopts high-performance PRT (similar to CRT for TV) for screen projection and is composed of 3 projection lenses. Although images are natural and clear, product size is big and installation as well as screen adjustment is difficult. Brightness and compatibility with PCs are also its weak points. Not used very much these days - except for A/V purpose.

LCD type Projector

A LCD type projector adopts LCD for screen display. The size is getting smaller while brightness is improving. Owing to strong compatibility with PC, many companies, schools and public offices are now using LCD type projectors. The LCD projector is dominating the Projector market.

DMD type Projector

Uses Texas instruments "micro-mirror arrays" hundreds of thousands of pivoting mirrors to modulate the image, instead of using LCDs. A new technology competing with LCDs, DLP Projector using a technology from Texas Instruments, that was brought to market 1996. Generally, DLPs are considered to have superior video quality to LCDs.

DLP : Digital Light Processing DMD : Digital Mirror Device

Comparison- LCD vs DMD LCD vs DMD

LCD Size / Weight Video Quality Price Color Uniformity Good Normal DMD Very good Good

Less expensive Worse, but improving Advantages : - It is easy to heighten a brightness. - It is easy to make a system with stability technology. Disadvantage : - Only a few maker supply LCD panel. (Epson, Sony)

Expensive Better Advantages : - LCDs have a very visible "mask" or dark area around each pixel. But DLPs have virtually no mask. In normal use, DLPs project a virtually seamless image. Disadvantage : - Only TI hold patents of DLP. So, TI supplies all DMD.

Brightness
1. What is a ANSI lumens?
ANSI lumen is a measure of brightness put out by a projector, as standardized by American National Standards Institute. Calculating ANSI lumens(In case of 40 screen size) 1. Measure the mean illumination of 9 points on the screen like right figure. 2. Mean illumination X area = ANSI lumens
Ex) When 40 inch (SIZE = 0.495 m2) is projected on the screen , The mean illumination is 2,500 lx -> 2,500 ( lx ) x 0.495 (m2) = 1,237.5 1,237.5 ANSI lumens

40 Screen

2. How much brightness do I need to get a good images?

Over 2,000 ANSI lumens 1000 ~ 2000 ANSI lumens Under 1000 ANSI lumens : You are not disturbed by interior illumination : You can get a good image in bright condition. : You can get a good image with lights dimmed, so turning off the light is advisable.

Resolution
1. What is a Resolution? In case of VGA, the number of horizontal pixel is 640 units and the number of vertical line is 480. 2. A kind of Resolution

Compression
Compression Technology is the ability of a projector to display higher resolution than its original. All DMD and LCD projectors have only one real(or true)" resolution. To display higher signal, they must "compress" the data to fit.
For example, to display XGA(1024 x 768) signal, you must compress it into SVGA(800 x 600) format, in other words, must eliminate about 40% information out of 1024 x 768(appr. 800,000 pixels) to fit the whole screen. Complicated algorithms are used to selectively eliminate so much data, with leaving the best possible image.

Function

Keystone Correction
1. What is a Keystone Correction? Keystone function is useful when your image appears wider at the top or bottom because the projector is positioned somewhere other than the center of the screen. Keystone correction corrects this rectangular distortion.

20

Zoom(Window Zoom)
Zoom function enlarges a specific portion of an original image - LP-XG1(Only PC mode) - LP-XG2, LP-XG12 (You can use PC or Video mode)

Window Zoom Zoom Screen Shift : enables you to see the hidden portion : enables you to enlarge a specific portion of an image appointed by of the images, covered by the zoomedwindow. in portion, by shifting the screen freely.

21

Auto Tracking

This function assures you of getting the best video quality by automatically adjusting the difference of horizontal width and tremor of the image. This difference is caused by disaccord of the internal signal of the projector and diverse graphic signals of PC. This function is operated only in PC mode.

22

Auto Source Detect

1. It Automatically detects computer input signal and adjusts it to the XGA mode (In case of real XGA resolution) or SVGA mode(In case of real SVGA resolution). 2. When new signal(In case of XGA) is input, original signal from a source is displayed. Source : PC1 Present Signal : XGA 60Hz
